Amazon for books' app gives Weld RE-4 students instant access to Clearview Library BY ANNE DELANEY
W
indsor Middle School sixth-grade teacher Ericha Jaeger has been teaching for 14 years, and she and her home district recently discovered a new learning tool they would've loved years ago. It’s an app called Sora, and finding it was a collaboration between the Weld RE-4 School District and the Clearview Library District to give students and school staff free access to the library's digital catalogue of e-books and audio books. “I wish I had it for the last 14 years,” said Jaeger, a sixth-grade language arts teacher. “It has opened the door for so many kids who struggle with reading.” Clearview Library District is located on Third Street in Windsor and serves residents who live in the school district communities of west Greeley, Severance and Windsor. One of Jaeger’s students who's struggled with reading is her 12-yearold son, Kollin. Now a Windsor Middle School sixth grader in one of his mother’s classes, Kollin Jaeger has dealt with dyslexia for many years. Kollin’s family has helped him and supported him in his efforts to improve his reading even before learning about Sora. District officials discovered the app earlier this year as they evaluated their digital needs for the new school year while considering possibilities of students again needing to learn remotely with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Clearview Library District
Communications Specialist Katie Messerli said late last week that over the previous 120 days the library has recorded 613 checkouts by school district accounts using Sora. Of those 613 checkouts, 217 came from different users. “We’re excited to see students and teachers begin to utilize Sora, and we look forward to helping the school district continue to spread the word about this new resource,” Messerli said in an email. Sora is not an abbreviation for another word. It’s a school-specific product of OverDrive, a supplier of e-materials for libraries and schools, Messerli said. The school district and library have always had a strong partnership, and their teams worked together over the summer to establish Sora as a resource for the school district. "Our goal as public library is to make information and our materials as accessible as possible to our community," Messerli said. "And we want to provide information and access to everyone, and this was one way we could meet a need and provide that resource especially in these challenging times." Weld RE-4 district-level librarian Mollie Amundson said the district has limited options to provide students with e-books and audio books in schools. Through the partnership with the library district, students and staff now have access to thousands of options at their fingertips. “It’s instant,” Kollin Jaeger said. “It’s basically Amazon for books.” Amundson said student access to
Sora is based on age level. Elementary students may access juvenile books, picture books with read-along content and chapter books. Middle school students may access all of the elementary-level content plus young adult books. High school students, then, may read materials from the younger grades plus adult-level e-books and audio books. Amundson added none of the district students have access to material labeled as mature content by publishers. There is also a limited quantity of periodicals available through Sora. “Whether students are in person or not, audio books provide a different way to access reading materials and some students prefer to listen,” Amundson said. “E-books and audio books provide a different access point for reading materials for students.” Ericha Jaeger said the different perspective provided by e-books and audio books is what can make them effective tools in helping all students including students with learning disabilities or students who might not be reading to grade level. The ability to read a book electronically, and see the words while listening to a proficient reader speak the text can help stronger student tackle more rigorous material. This definitely expected of her sixth-grade students, who have to use Sora as part of their classwork. “Sora levels the playing field for all kids,” Jaeger said. “If you want to listen to a proficient reader or read the text, it’s accessible to you.”

To make walnut crisp topping: In food processor, pulse 1 cup walnuts until finely ground. In small bowl, combine ground walnuts, flour, brown sugar, oats and cinnamon. Cut butter into mixture until coarse crumb forms. Coarsely chop remaining walnuts and stir into crumb mixture until incorporated. Set aside. To make apple pear filling: Preheat oven to 350 F. In bowl, toss apples, pears, sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, salt and lemon juice. Place fruit mixture in bottom of 10-inch cast-iron pan or baking dish. Sprinkle walnut crisp topping mixture over fruit. Bake 45 minutes, or until fruit mixture is hot and bubbly and topping is golden brown. Top with ice cream and caramel sauce, if desired.
Pumpkin Walnut Sage Risotto Total time: 30 minutes, Servings: 6 Risotto: 6 cups vegetable stock 1/4 cup olive oil 1/2 large yellow onion, finely diced 1 1/2 cups Arborio rice 1 cup pumpkin puree 1/4 cup grated pecorino cheese
To make risotto: In medium pot over medium-low heat, heat vegetable stock.
Walnut Sage Pesto: 2 cloves fresh garlic 1 cup California walnuts 1/2 cup fresh sage leaves, plus additional for garnish, if desired 1/2 cup grated pecorino cheese, plus additional for garnish, if desired 2 tablespoons olive oil kosher salt, to taste black pepper, to taste
Add hot stock 1 cup at a time, stirring frequently. As stock is absorbed, add another cup. Continue until all stock has been incorporated and rice is cooked al dente, about 20 minutes. Stir in pumpkin and cheese.
In large, heavy pot over medium heat, heat olive oil. Add onion and cook, stirring often, 5 minutes, or until soft. Add rice and cook, stirring often, 2-3 minutes until rice is translucent except for white center.
To make walnut sage pesto: In bowl of food processor, combine garlic and walnuts; pulse until minced. Add 1/2 cup sage leaves, 1/2 cup cheese and olive oil; pulse until coarse pesto forms. Season with salt, to taste. In final few minutes, add 1/2 cup walnut sage pesto to risotto, stirring until well incorporated. Season with kosher salt and black pepper, to taste. Garnish with remaining pesto, cheese and fresh sage, if desired.

HOW WILL YOUR HOLIDAYS LOOK IN 2020? BY SANDI SQUICQUERO MARKETING FEATURE
A
s the Thanksgiving holiday is a prelude to the holiday season, our stress level is on the rise and is defined differently than at other times during the year. Studies show many people are feeling the stress of the holiday season. In a study by the American Psychological Association and Quinlan Rosner Research 44% of women and 31% of men reported increased stress. This holiday season with COVID-19 in play those figures will likely increase. A stress-free holiday ? Probably not, as most of us want to make the best of the holiday with family and friends. This year with COVID-19 and flu season knocking on our door, travel will be curtailed significantly. According to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics, long distance trips usually increase by 54 % over Thanksgiving weekend and over 23% from Christmas to New Year’s Day, but this may not happen this year. COVID-19 has changed this holiday season even before it begins. Family traditions such as mom’s homemade turkey and dressing may 8 | mywindsor | NOVEMBER 2020
end up just poignant memories. No preparing the turkey ahead of time or deciding whether you will have pumpkin or pecan pie. Stress free right? I am reminded of the classic movie “It’s a Wonderful Life,” in which George Bailey is given a second chance to realize just how wonderful his previous life really was. Even though people have the choice of where to travel and how to do it, the strong fear of contracting COVID-19 and giving it to family for some is strong. Staying at home is a real alternative but at the cost of increasing anxiety and depression. For some who are away from family due to distance, military service or attending school, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” (Bing Crosby) is not happening and “Blue Christmas” (Elvis Presley) is a sad reality. Many families all over the world are grieving now for family members lost to the COVID-19 epidemic. Making this worse is the fact that, in many cases, we unable to be with our relatives due to lockdowns and travel restrictions which make this whole business much more painful. I am reminded of stories told by relatives and friends long ago about World War II and many holidays with families spread all over the world, uncertain as to what was in store for
them in the future. My husband’s uncle Fred was a tail gunner in a B-17 bomber stationed in England and never knew if he would live to see another Christmas. Londoners endured the Blitz and never knew if an enemy bomb was destined to strike them. We face adversity but not as great as our elderly relatives faced. We need to understand that and believe that the sun will shine again and the skies won’t always be brown with smoke. In the movie Jurassic Park the hopeful phrase “Life will Find a Way” made me smile and it is true for us, here and now. We will find a way, a way back to our normal lives and a way to leave most of our stress behind. Are we being punished by the universe? How do we cope with this? Here are some thoughts: Set your priorities; do the things you enjoy; stay connected to others by volunteering; send meaningful gifts and handwritten cards to friends and family; live in the here and now; don’t worry about the future or fuss about the past. Look at each individual stressor and ask yourself, “can I change it, or do I need to let it go?” Feelings come from thoughts and if you can change your thoughts you can change your feelings.

PAMPERING OUR FURRY FRIENDS FOR THE FALL BY EMILY KEMME MARKETING FEATURE
J
ust because Fluffy has a fur coat doesn’t mean he enjoys being outside when the temperature drops. According to veterinarian Dr. Bridget Edgren of Sheep Draw Veterinary Hospital, if you’re cold, it’s likely your dog or cat is, too. “Anything below 40 degrees can be too cold for your dog to stay outdoors longer than thirty minutes,” Edgren said. Her recommendation has a proviso: it depends on the dog. Working dogs and others with thick undercoats might be fine because they have natural insulation. “A little Yorkie or Chihuahua has less compensatory mechanisms and body weight to withstand adverse weather,” she said, while a Husky might be able to withstand hanging out in the snow longer because they’re bred for it. Edgren also advises factoring time outside based on a dog’s age. Bring older dogs back inside sooner. Erin Callaghan, owner of Windsor’s Hot Rod Dog Pet Grooming, agrees. “Dogs shake and shiver when it’s cold and their noses and feet get cold to the touch. to recognize when it’s too cold for your animals, because it can cause hypothermia.” That thick, furry coat might seem to be the key to your dog’s well-being in frigid weather, but it’s counterintuitive. Callaghan said many clients keep their pet’s coats well-trimmed during chillier months. “If your pet doesn’t spend much time outside, shorter haircuts in winter are good, and can prevent snowballs and muck from accumulating. While many grow out dogs’ coats in winter, it requires more maintenance and brushing to avoid mats. Once hair is matted, brushing can irritate the animal’s skin by pulling against the hair. Working out mats can give animals brush burn, a bruise on the skin caused by extensive or harsh brushing. Rashes are possible, too.” Callaghan particularly finds that the popular doodles mat easily. These
sweet natured, mixed breed dogs combine poodles with endless breed varieties — there are goldendoodles, Saint Bernadoodles, Newfiedoodles, and even Dalmadoodles, to name a few. But the combo mixes two coat types. Any dog with a double coat — an undercoat of dense, short hair topped by a layer of longer hair — will mat and tangle. It’s true: double coats benefit dogs in summer by trapping colder air between the layers to cool the skin. In chilly weather, those layers trap heat to keep your doggy cozy. But with doodles, “The kinky hair from the poodle will get stuck with the overcoat from the other part of the breed,” she said. Callaghan recommends regular grooming with a full hair cut or bath every 6 to 8 weeks. Hot Rod Dog’s Overhaul package includes a bath, blowout, brushing, nail trim, and ear

Callaghan advised drying both your dog’s coat and feet when they come inside after playing to remove dirt and debris that gets stuck between toes. Speaking of toes, if walking dogs on sidewalks during the winter, take care to walk on pet safe salt to prevent pad burns, cracks, and bleeding. If salting your own walks and driveway, check labels to make sure the product is pet safe. The ASPCA recommends wiping paws to prevent dogs from licking the salt. A final note of cold weather pet love: if Fluffy likes to sport a perky parka during his outdoor explorations, remove it at night and give him a good brushing. “Think of it as putting a beanie on your head and keeping it there for a month,” Callaghan said. “You’re not going to have the best hair day.”

How to do holiday gatherings in a socially distant year BY LUANNE KADLUB MARKETING FEATURE
T
he holiday season is upon us and our calendars are most likely full of family dinners with all the trimmings, office parties at swanky restaurants, cookie swaps at our neighbors’ houses and, of course, holiday shopping in crowded malls with all the sounds and scents of the season. Oh wait, that was last year and the year before and the year before that ... Fast forward to 2020. Spiking coronavirus infections have led – again or still, depending on where you live – to mandatory mask requirements indoors and out, the governor has proclaimed gatherings can only be up to 10 people (five in Denver) of two separate households, and we must still stay six feet away from one another. So much for over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving, Christmas or Hanukkah. But you can still celebrate the holidays so long as you do it in a socially distant and careful manner. “The biggest thing this year is to recognize that the coronavirus can be contagious before and after any symptoms,” said Dr. Robert Kelley, family medicine specialist at UCHealth Primary Care - Timnath. “You don’t want to infect others and have it become a health emergency. That’s a major risk factor of holiday gatherings this year.” He concedes that many of us are growing weary of isolation, but that’s not good enough of a reason to throw caution — or your mask — to the wind. “It’s the lottery you don’t want to win,” Kelley added. Dr. Michelle Barron, one of UCHealth’s chief architects for handling the pandemic, added that you should consider turning down 12 | mywindsor | NOVEMBER 2020
any and all invitations that make you uncomfortable. “If you have any doubts, this is the year to skip it,” she said. “The potential consequences of you bringing flu or COVID-19 to your family holiday gathering or acquiring it and bringing it back home afterwards isn’t worth it.” What’s the best way to celebrate with friends and families? Dr. Kelley and the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control offered these tips: • If possible, host the event outdoors (Colorado has been known to occasionally have temperate Novembers and Decembers), and if it’s not possible, open windows and doors to increase ventilation. If your family can’t get together, consider hosting a virtual dinner instead. • Limit the length of the get-together. Last year’s all-day event should be kept to two or three hours at the most. • Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces and any shared items when feasible. • Make sure everyone washes their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds before and after preparing, serving and eating food. Limit the number of people going in and out of the areas where food is prepared or handled, such as the kitchen or next
to the smoker. • Wear a mask while preparing or serving food to others who don’t live in your household. • If serving any food, forego doing it buffet style and instead have one person serve all the food so that multiple people are not handling serving utensils. • If you plan to travel during the holidays, CDC recommends that you consider the number and rate of COVID-19 cases in your community and in the community where you plan to celebrate. Information on the number of cases in an area can be found on the area’s health department website. CDC urges all persons to stay home and away from in-person gatherings if you’ve been diagnosed with COVID-19, have coronavirus symptoms, are waiting for a COVID-19 viral test results, have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, or are at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19. WINDSOR — The group developing the Future Legends Sports Complex in Windsor has tapped Greeley-based Hensel Phelps Construction Co. and Denver-based Galloway and Co. Inc. as the general contractor and architect for the oftentroubled project. California-based developer Jeff Katofsky said in a statement that Hensel Phelps has already begun grading and underground utility work on the 118-acre site at 801 Diamond Valley Dr. “Hensel Phelps and Galloway are the best in their field, and we are thrilled to have them involved in the construction and design of Future Legends Complex. They have already made a monumental impact on the project and continue to do so,” Future Legends CEO Katofsky said in the statement. The Future Legends project has had a bumpy history. Originally named

Coaches of postponed sports look ahead to spring ALEX MCINTYRE BY BOBBY FERNANDEZ
L
aVerne Huston has spent each of the past 35 fall seasons coaching high school volleyball. Naturally, it would take nothing short of, say, a global pandemic to keep her from providing the on-court mentorship she loves doing. While some traditional fall high school sports like softball and football have remained in place this fall — albeit with significant modifications to season formats and game-day environments — others like girls volleyball and boys soccer have been pushed to the late winter/early spring. The result is an almost surreal departure from normalcy and routine for Huston and thousands of others throughout the state who coach and compete in these sports. “It’s been very odd,” Huston said. “At times, I wish we were in season. And, at times, I’ve decided, ‘Well, it is what it is.’ I’m just hoping that we do have a spring (season).” Huston has been the head volleyball coach at Windsor since 1991 and

coached for six years before that at University and Valley high schools. She didn’t hesitate to say she never before experienced anything quite like what’s going on right now — with the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent postponement of the volleyball season — during her rich, eventful high school coaching career, which began in 1985. Normally, this time of year, the Wizards and other girls volleyball programs from throughout the state would be right in the thick of their postseasons, contending for state titles. But instead, the decision was made late in the summer to move the volleyball season — and seasons for other traditional fall sports like boys soccer — to the late winter on into the spring, with competition beginning March 4. Cross country, boys golf, softball and boys tennis took place this fall as scheduled, with somewhat condensed seasons. Gov. Jared Polis and the Colorado High School Activities Association decided fewer than two months ago
to allow football teams the choice of playing in the fall or the spring. Field hockey and sideline spirit were also given the option of competing in their traditional fall seasons. Nearly 79% of all football programs in seven classifications opted for the fall. All 15 field hockey programs in the state opted to play in the spring, as initially purposed a few months ago. Coaches and players in girls volleyball and boys soccer, though, weren’t given the same options. Huston said she was plenty understanding: volleyball is played indoors, and players from opposing teams compete with one another largely face to face, right at the net. Also, Huston said she would actually prefer to play in the spring with at least some chance COVID-19 will be a bit more contained by then — perhaps allowing the volleyball season to proceed with fewer interruptions, postponements and cancelations than what other fall sports have had to endure this fall. Boys soccer might have made a bit more sense for a traditional fall season.
The sport takes place outdoors and is often played with at least slightly more spacing in the field of play than football, softball or cross country. But, like Huston, Windsor boys soccer coach Phil Weiser isn’t exactly pouting over the idea of having to wait until the spring to step on the pitch. “It’s disappointing that we didn’t have a fall season, but I support that decision completely,” said Weiser, who has coached the Wizards since 2003. “(In late October), we would be getting ready to prepare for the postseason, and one of our top seniors would be quarantined and would not be available to play. “… We have club soccer, which got shut down this past March. So, this has been an opportunity for clubs to step in (this fall) and provide an outlet for our boys to play that doesn’t in any way, shape or form threaten shutting down our school.”
Some of Windsor’s soccer players also tried their hand at cross country and tennis this fall, Weiser said. “And, I think that’s good, to give some of those boys the chance to try something that they maybe haven’t been able to try in the past,” he said. Like with club soccer, Huston said the absence of high school volleyball this fall also allowed club volleyball programs to step up and fill that void. Huston is highly involved with the club scene as the ClubOne volleyball director. The majority of Huston’s players

participate in club volleyball. The club and high school seasons have essentially switched places from when they normally take place each year. With the pandemic wreaking havoc on club volleyball earlier this year, this fall has now become an ideal time for those clubs to make up those seasons — and for athletes to gain some valuable experience with their clubs before many shift their focus to their high school seasons in a handful of months. Plus, for Huston, having a little R & R hasn’t been the worst thing after three-plus decades of working long days and late nights every fall. “I’ve been in high school volleyball for over 35 years, and I’ve never experienced this before,” Huston said. “It definitely has been something new. … Let’s put it this way, I know what retirement is going to feel like when I’m done.”

Materials vary, too, including a “green” option that is free of chemicals, for example. “People buy a bed for long-term and they come in knowing what they think they want. We are here to help them fine-tune their options. We can help guide you because we’ve been in business a long time,” Cramer said. “We have options that [our customers] may not know even existed. We are not arm-twisters; we try to be educators and help [our customers] make an informed decision.” Like so many other aspects of life, the COVID-19

pandemic has impacted how people view their beds. “People are spending so much more time in their homes now. They use their beds to watch TV or work on their laptop, even lounge and listen to music,” Cramer
