I recently underwent a health assessment which involved a lengthy questionnaire on how I care for myself. It was part of a getting acquainted process with a new medical company. Things went smoothly until the interviewer asked about any exercise I routinely do. I said “gardening.” She nodded and said she was interested in what I did for exercise, ignoring my input on my green thumb activities. I reiterated, “yes – I garden. Every day. Vegetable gardening.” Again, I got the nod without any notation on her questionnaire while she said “Ok, so, no routine exercise.” In retrospect I should have remembered I was trying to impress, not frighten, them but my gardener’s heart was insulted. Taking a deep breath, I launched into what my friends describe as my oh-no-here-she-goes mode. “Gardening is exercise, and there are many studies that back this up,” I said. “And plenty of gardeners say it’s like Pilates or yoga. But in my case, let me give you a glimpse: imagine yourself in my version of the yoga Warrior position. This is where you stand with your legs as far apart as they can go front to back, forward knee bent, with your arms held out.” Patiently, she nodded. “Now, add in downward dog, bending at your waist until you’re eye-level with the mulch. It’s

basically a downward dog who thinks it’s a warrior; I call it The Chihuahua. Hold the Chihuahua position while you pick every cherry tomato from the plants. It could be 30 seconds or 3 minutes. Are you with me so far?” I said with seriousness. Her stare became fixed. “Now, let’s sprinkle in the child’s game The Floor Is Lava – do you remember that?” I asked and she nodded. “You can’t put your feet anywhere else because you’d step in lava – or in this case, on your pumpkin vines. Keep holding that position until the tomatoes are picked; it’s strength training for all sorts of muscles.” “Walking through the garden is a game of garden Twister, where you swoop your torso around to avoid squirrel-netted grapes, trellis outcrops, and lean over dog fencing. It’s great for your glutes,” I note. “All this time the basket you carry can’t be tilted or it spills but it’s getting heavier and lopsided – that’s for your arms and shoulders.” “Pumping iron in a gym is fine for some, but it’s a wholebody routine when squashes and pumpkins come in. Some of them – pumpkins, Hubbards, and banana squash especially – often weigh 20 pounds or more. You’d better lift with your legs when moving them. And, while most of the other winter squashes

At Home Northern Colorado

are smaller, gardeners try to carry them all at once in a spectacular demonstration of the Human Wheelbarrow maneuver.” “This is just harvesting. Weeding, now there’s an activity to rival any rowing machine,” I say rocking back and forth while mimicking the grab and pull of the activity. She starts rocking as well, in small motions that suggest her subconscious is getting into the conversation. “Bend-and-pull and bend-andpull, plus there’s the breathing activity, where you explosively scream ‘where do they all come from?’ It’s very therapeutic.” “Honestly, it’s why many gardeners have a spring training routine, to get our bodies ready for the rigors of summer,” I said. “It’s also why plenty of us have stock in ibuprofen manufacturers.” At this point, the interviewer acquiesced, noting that my exercise is gardening. I felt pretty good about making my point, but then she moved on to the next section: mental health. Looking up at me she said, “I think we have all the information we need.” Colorado State University Extension, together with Boulder County Parks and Open Space, provides unbiased, research-based information about consumer and family issues, horticulture, natural resources, agriculture and 4-H youth development. ASK ANGI

Why does gutter cleaning matter? Paul F. P. Pogue Ask Angi (TNS) Your gutters do so much more than just direct water away from your house. They’re an essential defensive measure that protects your yard, foundation, roof and basement from long-term water damage. It can be easy to forget to keep them clean, but gutter cleaning is a vital step in home maintenance. When gutters get clogged, they overflow and back up the water instead of depositing it several feet away from the house. When this happens, water spills directly onto the yard, causing erosion of your soil and increasing pressure on the basement or foundation. If standing water remains in your basement or crawlspace, you might experience mold or other damage. It can also fall behind the gutters, causing fascia boards to rot. During cold weather, water overflow can freeze and cause foundation cracks or back up onto the roof, causing ice dams and eventual roof damage. You can prevent this with regular gutter cleaning. How often you need it depends on numerous factors, including the region where you live and the number and type of trees near your home. In most cases, experts say you should clean your gutters

Leaves, dirt, and other debris can cause serious problems if they block up your gutters. (Dreamstime/TNS)

twice a year — once in spring and the next time late in fall, once all the leaves have fallen. Gutter cleaners get very busy in the fall, so it’s a good idea to get on the schedule as early as possible. Gutter cleaning costs between $115 and $225. Most jobs take an hour or two. The exact price will vary based on the size of your home and the number of stories the cleaners have to reach. If your gutters haven’t been cleaned out in a while and require extra time to clear out the debris, the job might also cost more. In most cases, downspouts won’t require much if any cleaning, but

in cases where debris has clogged the downspout, expect to pay between $50 and $100 more. Installing gutter guards means you may not have to hire gutter cleaners as often. However, when that job does take place, you might be charged extra because of the additional time they must take to remove and reinstall the guards. It’s possible to clean gutters yourself, but if you do so, make sure you take all proper safety precautions, including wearing protective eyewear and work gloves and having a spotter to hold the ladder sturdy.

When hiring a pro, verify that your cleaner has liability and workers’ comp insurance, which protects you in the event of damage to your home or injury to a worker. This is always a good idea when hiring any home service, but it is particularly vital in work that involves risky activities like climbing ladders or going on the roof. ____ Tweet your home care questions with #AskAngi and we’ll try to answer them in a future column.

COVERPROFILE

VETERANS: Don’t Pass Up VA Home Loans By Luanne Kadlub for At Home Northern Colorado Weld and Larimer Counties are home to more than 38,000 veterans, many of whom are homeowners and many of whom have not taken advantage of one of the best benefits of serving their country. “They should be tapping into VA home loans,” said Peggy Kramer, a loan officer for Elevations Credit Union in Fort Collins. “I don’t see as many as I should be seeing.” VA Home Loans are provided by private lenders, such as banks, credit unions and mortgage companies. VA guarantees a portion of the loan, enabling the lender to provide veterans, active-duty military and surviving spouses with more favorable loan terms. “I love VA loans. They’re one way that we can pay back veterans for years of service to protect our country,” Kramer said. What sets them apart from conventional home loans? For starters, no money down, limited closing costs, low interest rates and no private mortgage insurance. In comparison, a conventional home loan requires a minimum of 3 percent down and private mortgage insurance until the homeowner gets to 80 percent loan to value. Only then can be dropped, Kramer said. While VA loans require a funding fee, it is minimal in today’s dollars. For example, with 5 percent down on a $517,000 house, the funding fee would be $2,800, said Michelle Roberts, a Realtor and founder of Veterans Housing Network, a nationwide real estate referral service headquartered in Fort Collins. Roberts, a veteran of Desert Storm and former commander of the Fort Collins Veterans of Foreign Wars, said she created VHN to connect veterans, active 4

ATHOMECOLORADO.COM

duty and surviving spouses with real estate agents who themselves are veterans and who understand what’s at stake. “I saw a real need,” said Roberts, who has been in real estate for more than 20 years. Her comrades, she said, rarely understood the benefits of VA loans and many others were preyed upon by large national lenders who claimed to have “veterans best interest in mind” while charging $10,000 or more in extra fees. VHN focuses on educating and supporting the military and veteran population on how to use VA loans when purchasing their homes. The referral service also educates veterans on how they can use VA disability and/or basic allowance for housing (BAH) to purchase a home and by doing so increase their net worth. “Close to 50 percent don’t know how to use a VA loan. There are a lot of myths. My mission is educating them on how to use VA loans and change their

futures,” she said. In addition, she said many real estate agents don’t understand them, so they sometimes steer clients to conventional mortgages. “In this crazy market, listing agents and sellers see them as really complicated. They’re not,” said Roberts. Because the VA works only with preferred VA appraisers, many sellers believe the process will unearth numerous issues and therefore don’t consider offers attached to VA loans. “They (VA appraisers) are looking for health and safety issues within the property,” Kramer explained. “The home doesn’t have to be pristine.” And, Roberts added, VA appraisals do not take any longer to get back than non-VA appraisals. They’re done more quickly if not faster,” she said. Another myth is that VA loans can only be used once. Quite the contrary said Roberts, noting they can be used “again and again,” but only for properties in

At Home Northern Colorado

which the veteran and his or her family intend to live for the next 12 months. Should he or she be deployed before then, however, the home can be rented until they return. VA home loans, however, cannot be used for homes purchased as investments or for vacation homes. While it’s easy to go online and apply for a mortgage, Kramer pointed out it’s important to know who you’re doing business with. “Elevations is local. We give back into the community and we support foundations that are local. It’s a lot easier to deal with somebody who is local. You can come right into the office.” Kramer’s advice to prospective VA homebuyers? Begin your home search by first talking to a loan officer and real estate agent familiar with VA loans and options — including cash offers — that could make the process easier in today’s competitive real estate market.
