The season for gift anxiety is rolling around, and my Facebook feed is pushing articles CAROL with lists of O’MEARA items to give Colorado State University Extension to serious hobbyists of many things. Some have good ideas, others not so much. One list stood out with so many ridiculous items for the “serious cook” that my cousin, a chef, sent it out with an outraged snarl. I don’t blame him: it featured Hello Kitty measuring spoons, a Flying Spaghetti monster colander, and oven mitts designed to be bear paws – complete with felt claws that stuck out well past the mitt. The photos of the items did nothing to sell their usefulness. The Hello Kitty spoons just laid on a counter, the oven mitts were used by the model to entertain his children, and the colander, inexplicably, was being worn on top of a model’s head. I don’t cook that way. But good ideas for gift giving are hard to find when you don’t participate in that hobby; you love your person but can’t relate, especially in gardening. So a few

suggestions might help. Stackable growing tower A great gift for gardeners who have limited space or have filled every nook and cranny of their yard and still want more plants. There are several towers out there that you could consider, depending on your budget. Look for sturdy towers that have easy access to fill the water reservoir, have large enough planters that roots aren’t cramped, and stay stable during windy events. Broadfork Serious gardeners love this tool for turning soil without the use of motors. With two long handles, the gardener thrusts the sharp tines into the soil, then stands on the flat center of the broadfork to add weight to the downward push. Stepping off and rocking the broadfork lifts and loosens the soil. Using a broadfork takes some strength, so be sure your gardener is able to do strenuous work before gifting it to them. Choosing a broadfork, like any tool, means shopping for quality. The broadfork will have stress applied to it when it’s pushed into and rocked out of the ground, so you don’t want a cheap product, or it will break. This translates into somewhat costly, but your gardener is worth it.

Kneelo knee pads A memory foam design that takes the pinch out of protecting your knees. With a contoured fit and double layer of foam padding, one shock absorbing EVA the other memory foam, these knee pads are comfortable to wear. For $30, this is a nice way to tell your gardener that you care about their knees. Razor toothed pruning saw Slicing through limbs larger than an inch-and-a-half requires a saw, and to make the job easy, a razor toothed pruning saw is the choice. A curved blade follows the round branch nicely and keeps the cut tidy. These aren’t too expensive; a good one will cost between $25 and $30. Carol A. ASK ANGIE’S LIST

How can I prepare for a home emergency? By Diana Crandall, Angie’s List Angie’s List (TNS) Venomous snakes in the woodpile, water pooling in the drywall — whether you live in an area prone to natural disasters or you’re just planning to take a long holiday vacation, it’s vital to know exactly how to prepare for different worst-case scenarios. After all, staying informed could mean the difference between paying a few hundred dollars and several thousand for home repairs. Burst pipes A pipe doesn’t have to freeze to burst — old, decaying pipes or plumbing clogs can also cause a rupture. No matter the cause, the damage to your property can be catastrophic if a breach does occur, so make sure you know exactly

where to find your emergency water shutoff if you suspect or see a major problem. Remember that timing is everything: Calling a plumber to fix the problem before a pipe bursts will run you $150$350 on average for the work. But for burst pipes, homeowners report paying between $1,000 and $4,000 in water damage cleanup and repair fees, according to the Angie’s List Pricing Guide. Maintain your plumbing, know where your emergency water shutoff is, and have a pro’s number on hand to solve the issue ASAP. Electrical emergencies Electrical emergencies can seem insignificant, like an outlet with a few burn marks around it, or absolutely massive, like a power outage that none of your neighbors are experiencing. But it’s vital to let an electrician handle even the smallest projects, as an electric shock can be deadly and damaged wiring can be a fire hazard. Homeowners report paying within a range of $160-$504 to hire an electrician, according to the Angie’s List

Pricing Guide, but rest assured: This type of fix preserves life and property, so it’s money well spent. Fresh water upgrades Do you worry about the quality of your fresh water? Find yourself stocking up on bottled water for everyday use? Install a water purification treatment system to save time, money and waste — and get a guaranteed source of quality water on a day-to-day basis. If you have to stockpile a large quantity of water because of an emergency, you can save time and money by turning on the tap and getting top-tier water that will keep you healthy and hydrated. Nationally, homeowners report paying about $1,778 to install a water purifier, according to the Angie’s List Pricing Guide. How does that stack up against your water bottle bill? Roof damage Roof damage from high winds, heavy hail or significant snow can cause serious (and costly) problems if you don’t fix it ASAP. Warning signs of a problem include missing shingles or dents, condensation

in your attic, and any type of leaking in your home. Call a local repairman who specializes in your roof type — the most common is asphalt shingles — to repair the issue. Homeowners report paying between $317-$1,158 to repair an asphalt shingle roof, according to the Angie’s List Pricing Guide. Yard clean-up Keeping your yard clear of brush, woodpiles and debris is a simple way to avoid a myriad of issues. In drier climates, this type of pile-up can serve as wildfire fuel, while cooler climates can see standing pools of water turn to slippery sheets of ice overnight. Homeowners in all climates should also be aware of local pests that can take up residence in heaps of toys, trash, leaves or wood. The cost of yard cleanup depends on how large your property is, but nationwide, homeowners report paying about $343 on average, according to the Angie’s List Pricing Guide. The do’s and don’ts of decorating with orange By Cathy Hobbs Tribune News Service (TNS) Orange is a popular color, especially this time of year. Not sure you’re ready to take the plunge? There are numerous subtle and creative ways to infuse, this warm, friendly, popular color into your home without going overboard. Here are some top tips.

Orange drapery adds elegance to this living space. (Design Recipes/TNS) November 23-24, 2019

DO: 1. Use accessories and accents such as throws and toss pillows to incorporate orange into your living space. 2. Consider an accent wall or paint as a way to infuse orange into your decor. 3. Create a sense of contrast by pairing orange with neutral colors such as white, cream, gray and black. 4. Remember to use portable decor options (accessories and accents that can be moved from room to room and easily swapped out).

5. Look for unexpected opportunities to bring orange accents into a space. DON’T: 1. Be afraid to mix different shades and tones of orange in a space. 2. Overwhelm a space with too many colorful elements. 3. Mix orange with muddy colors, such as rust. 4. Overlook opportunities to highlight orange by pairing it with cooler colors such as blue

and green. 5. Forget artwork is a wonderful way to bring orange into a space. This gives you more freedom when placing your ribbons and leads to less chance of getting tangled. While I certainly clove my plaids, we have been using lots of velvet ribbons and I adore the luxe feel they add. We tend to go a bit overboard with unexpected items in our trees, but that is part of the magic. Picks are a fun way to add a new element and some fullness to your tree. Lanterns and small trays holding figurines or other accents are other fun items that can spice things up. They are the perfect place to add (faux fire) candles for some extra glow. Last but absolutely not least, our No. 1 item to have on hand during the holidays is zip ties. Zip ties are our best friends when it comes to trimming our trees. They prevent drooping branches, sliding ribbons, breaking ornaments and a whole lot of stress. I cannot recommend using them enough. When it’s time for your tree to come down, simply clip the zip ties below the head with a wire cutter and your ornaments and ribbons (and other decor) pop free. Adapted from nellhills.com. Holiday Home Safety Tips Flatirons Home Inspections would like to offer you these holiday decorating safety tips BY RICK for the home JACQUEMARD instead of Flatirons Home our weekly Inspections column. Quite a few of our daily routines change during the holiday season. Here are a few simple tips help keep our families safe and able to enjoy the season. If you use an artificial tree, choose one that is tested and labeled as fire resistant. Artificial trees with built-in electrical systems should have the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) When displaying a natural tree, cut off about two inches off the trunk and put the tree in a sturdy, water-holding stand. Keep the

stand filled with water so the tree does not dry out quickly. If you let the tree stand run dry the trunk will seal up again. While many people opt for using Christmas tree preservatives, studies have shown these additives are totally unnecessary. Place all trees away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources. Make sure the tree does not block foot traffic or doorways. Do not use more than three light sets on any one extension cord. Do not run cords under rugs, around furniture legs or across doorways. Before you string lights on your house or trees, inspect the strands, to make sure there aren’t any frayed cords or cracked

bulbs. Also, don’t use indoor lights outside. Check the tag on the string of lights to be sure. Avoid placing breakable tree ornaments or ones with small, detachable parts on lower branches where small children or pets can reach them. Decorative holiday plants such as mistletoe, holly berries, Jerusalem cherry and amaryllis may be poisonous. Keep these plants out of the reach of children and pets. Never use lighted candles near trees, boughs, curtains/drapes, or with any potentially flammable item. If you use artificial snow on windows or other surfaces, be sure to follow directions carefully. These sprays can irritate your lungs if you inhale them. Also, don’t use artificial snow in areas that young children or pets can reach. When displaying outdoor lights, fasten them firmly to a secure support with insulated staples or hooks to avoid wind damage. Never nail, tack or stress wiring when hanging lights and keep plugs off the ground away from

puddles and snow. The 3 sets of lights per extension cord rule also applies here. Hiring a professional to hang outdoor lights is the safest option. When putting up holiday decorations, always use the proper step stool or ladder to reach high places. Don’t stand on chairs, desks or other furniture. If you must use a step ladder near a doorway, lock or barricade the door and post signs so no one will open it and knock you off the ladder. Also, never stand on the top of a step ladder, the one that says this is not a step. Take extra precautions with turkey fryers (be sure the oil used to fry the turkey is the right temperature and always fry outside, in a well-ventilated area.) Don’t use water to extinguish a grease fire -- instead, use a fire extinguisher or douse the fire with baking soda. Happy Holidays from all of us at Flatirons Home Inspections. For more information on home inspections contact Rick Jacquemard, at 720.280.3544, e-mail rick@flatironshi.com or visit flatironshi.com.
