(BPT) - Whether you’re new to gardening or have a green thumb, summer is the perfect season to start your own garden. Now is the time to start thinking of all the possibilities the warm weather brings! “The first step to start your summer garden is considering what plants make you happy and what types of things you’ll use or enjoy most throughout the season,” says Emily Murphy, author of Pass the Pistil blog and “Grow What You Love” book and podcast. “In gardening, as in life, I say, grow what you love - find the things that make you happy and grow them.” The Gilmour Planting Map can also help you determine what to plant based on your zone. If you’re not sure where to start, consider these ideas to inspire your summer garden.

Plant for visual beauty If you’re more interested in looking at your garden than eating it, consider planting your favorite colors. Choose flowers that look gorgeous outdoors and indoors as vibrant and colorful bouquets. Cosmos are a great seasonal choice and range in colors from shades of white, yellow and tangerine to pink and magenta. Another bountiful option is the Clematis, which bloom all summer long in shades of lavender, pink and purple. If you’re looking for shade or a little privacy for your yard, Hollyhocks are another great option, as they grow up to six feet tall. Nature putting a damper on gardening
CAROL O’MEARA CSU Extension Just when our excitement for spring reached fever pitch, Mother Nature decided to amuse herself by playing cat-and-mouse with warmth. For one, glorious week, she tossed sunny days and clear skies at us, just to watch us press our noses to the windows of offices and meeting rooms in longing for outside. Gardeners jumped into the season by planting warm season crops and flowers. Laughing, Mother Nature turned on the faucet and turned off the heat. Temperatures plummeted and snow blanketed the landscape; gardeners rushed out at midnight to knock snow from young trees and branches. Hail came and went, along with rain, mist, and sleet. Things were bad enough I considered sacrificing a goat, three chickens, and a toddler to appease her, but remembered I’m not that much of a pagan. Declarations were made to get those plants in the ground, come Hades or high water, and “Big Momma N” is accepting the challenge; we’ve got high water alright, with over an inch-and-aquarter of precipitation tossed at us, according to the National Weather Service. Being unable to plant, gardeners feel like we’re in Hades. People suffer this all the time in other locales. True, they fight more plant diseases and have slugs big enough to saddle and ride, but they overcome the obstacles. Colorado gardeners just need to toughen up and learn to deal with a little damp. This means getting your sprinkler systems ready for when the rain stops falling. Take time to turn the system on and walk around each head as it runs to ensure that it’s level and watering flows unimpeded from the nozzle. Since it’s raining a lot now June 1-2, 2019
anyway, getting a little wetter from inspecting your irrigation shouldn’t faze you. Once you’ve given your system a checkup, turn it off until the rain stops falling. You don’t need to run sprinklers during rain storms. We’ll go from cold to hot in a menopausal minute once the weather returns to normal, so check the forecast daily to gauge when the time is right to turn the system on for the summer. If your plants look gnawed, put out slug traps, tenting them with a raised cap to keep them from overflowing with rainwater. Slug traps are small, margarine-sized plastic containers that you pour beer into to attract the mollusks. They crawl in and drown. Any beer will do so there’s no need to go with expensive stuff. Delay planting warm season crops until the soil warms a little more – if you’d already planted and they perished under the snow, cash in a savings bond and go shopping again. Most temperature readings of the soil are registering right around 60 degrees which are the minimum temperature for germination of beans, cucumbers, squash or pumpkins. And if the soil is soaked and cold, chances are higher that they’ll rot before they sprout. Wait a bit to let soil temperatures raise more. Tomato, eggplant, peppers, and tomatillos should be given protection from the chill nights if you plant them outdoors. They’ll sit and sulk in the cold soil too, so warm the soil with black plastic placed over it or Walls-O-Water set in place for at least seven days before you plant. Check container plantings to ensure that they are draining instead of holding water. Saturated soil is a deadly situation for roots to stay in but a lot of decorative containers don’t have adequate drain holes. Weeds are running amok with this water so leave time to patrol your beds for new sprouts. Take a trowel or Hori-Hori, the Japanese digging tool, out with you as you patrol. Weeds are easier to pull when the ground is soft and a nudge upward with the tool makes keeping the beds tidy a snap.

Whether you’re trying to sell your home or make a splash in the neighborhood, curb appeal plays a big role in your home’s value. Here are five effective ways to boost your home’s curb appeal this spring. 1. CLEAN THE EXTERIOR The first step to achieving great curb appeal is to start with a clean hose. Power washing the exterior is a great way to remove accumulated dirt, grime and moss. Clean the windows and make sure they’re all clear and sparkling. If you can’t reach them all, consider hiring a pro to help. Get into the gutters and the roofline to remove all dirt, leaves and branches. 2. REPAIR MASONRY If your home’s masonry is showing signs of age, it may be time to call out an expert to repair or restore it to its original pristine glory. By Katie Laughridge Tribune News Service (TNS) When designing a house, it is easy to get caught up in the big things — the large purchase items that take up space and set the tone for the rest of the room. Then, once the walls are painted or papered, light fixtures are installed, the rugs are laid, and the furniture is in (and flawless), the room still looks half-done. Now comes the task of artfully adding the finishing touches. When I think of finishing a room, my goal is to turn it from a house to a home. I want my spaces to feel elegant and refined, but also alive and lived in. I do this by adding accessories to my flat surfaces. All rooms — I’m talking living room, bedroom, dining room, kitchen and even the bathroom — can benefit from thoughtfully curated accessories. While I am always moving pieces around and adding to my collection, below you’ll find some of my current go-to touches. LIVING ROOM Whether you have a traditional coffee table or prefer an ottoman in your living room, there are many ways to add depth and texture. I like to layer items using a large tray and building up. Not only is this technique functional, it gives you many opportunities to add color 6

and pattern. I like to use everyday items like wine bottles, glassware, napkins and books to build vignette displays (at least in homes without little ones running around). I also love to incorporate greenery and flowers to add freshness to indoor spaces. My biggest obsession right now? Coffee table books. I find the beautiful photos within them inspirational, and they make for great conversation starters when I have guests. And of course, they are fantastic to style with, too! DINING ROOM The dining room can be a tricky room to decorate, especially if you use it as a formal area that is not frequently used. I find the dining room a great area to keep some of my favorite bottles on display. A gorgeous silver platter elevates a surface into a bar area perfect for pouring after-dinner drinks. A silver tea set or a pair of lamps are great alternatives that bring in an extra element of color or texture to your space. Using the same techniques from above, you can incorporate everyday items onto your surfaces to build height. Another trick: Keep the table set. Just because the room isn’t in constant use doesn’t mean it shouldn’t look soiree-ready. Creating a tablescape can be time consuming. Leaving it up for all to enjoy makes it worthwhile.
BEDROOM Adding personal touches to your bedroom will make a big difference in comfort. You want to come home to a space that makes you feel relaxed. I try to balance my love for maximalism (never enough pillows or vignettes for me!) with my husband’s simplistic style by keeping clutter to a minimum and displaying items I actually use such as my evening glass of water and ring holder (plus a space to dump my handbag after a long day). When it comes to a guest room, I like to keep an easy upkeep plant on the side table to make the room feel alive and lived in so out-oftowners feel at ease. Adding books and more indirect light sources helps make everyone feel at home when visiting. BATHROOM You might be thinking no one will notice the decor in your bathrooms, but it can make a huge difference. Carrying your theme or palette into every space no matter how small takes your home to the next level and gives an air of homey elegance that can’t be beat. Keeping essentials like Q-tips and towels in decorative containers makes the space both stylish and functional. Don’t forget that art looks amazing in any room, no matter how small. Pair a couple of similar pieces to make the wall appear larger.

KITCHEN I like to use practical or functional decor in the kitchen. Wooden cutting boards come in so many shapes, sizes and finishes that they make the perfect addition. I don’t think it’s possible to display too many at once. I use them against the kitchen backsplash to break it up and create a more intriguing backdrop. I also use them on countertops and tables to both serve food and display decorative pieces. The look of natural wood doesn’t compete with the other beautiful things in the room and adds a nice organic element to the space. They pair well with decorative bowls, fun glasses and colored napkins for the perfect kitchen vignette. The best part of incorporating finishing touches into a space is you can continuously add and rearrange for fresh, new looks. Switch accessories between rooms until you find the perfect mix. Introducing black and white into an existing room or infusing black and white into a previously design space can be achieved in many ways. Here are some top tips. 1. Consider black and or white for some of your primary or main furniture selections such as sofas, beds and side tables. Black can especially bring a luxurious feel.
