And it’s still possible to live large. Here are eight design hacks to help maximize the potential of smaller spaces. 1. Use mirrors. Mirrors can automatically help make small spaces feel bigger and more open and bright. 2. Divide open floor plans into zones. Create different zones for sleeping, entertaining and dining.
3. When painting, consider adding a horizontal or vertical stripe as an accent detail. This painting technique can help low ceilings feel taller and make rooms feel wider. 4. Use neutral colors. They can help make a small space feel not as closed in. 5. Use color mapping. Color mapping is a technique in which the same or similar colors are mapped or repeated from room to room or within a room. This is an especially useful technique to make the color scheme in a small room feel cohesive.

By Paul F.P. Pogue, Angie’s List Angie’s List (TNS) In the cold and flu season, it’s more important than ever to minimize germs that could make you and your family sick. Focus on these steps when you’re housecleaning in order to eliminate the nasty bugs taking refuge in your home.

You’ll find germs in the most unexpected places. When cleaning, focus on the elements you touch most often. Light switches, doorknobs, remote controls and faucet handles all harbor lots of germs, so clean them carefully with disinfectant wipes. Wash all your bedding in hot water and the hottest dryer setting once per week. This includes blankets and furniture
covers. Regularly clean your computer keyboard and any mobile devices as well. If you use a humidifier, clean it regularly. They provide excellent breeding grounds for bacteria. Toothbrush holders, the kitchen sink and sponges are some of the germiest places in your home, so take special care to thoroughly clean them. Soak sponges in a bowl of hot water and run them through the microwave for a few minutes. You can also run them through your dishwasher’s sanitary cycle instead. This works best for sponges with metal components, which can’t go in the microwave. Wash your hands regularly, using soap and warm water and scrubbing for at least 15 seconds. When housecleaning, don’t overlook your ceiling fan, where dust and debris can settle. Here’s

Even if you diligently stay on top of household cleaning, the supplies you use aren’t selfcleaning, and they need regular care to stay in good shape. You may think of them as selfcleaning, since they’re constantly doused in soap or cleaning solution, but the grime builds up quickly. Scrubbing down your cleaning supplies on a regular basis keeps your house cleaner and prevents the spread of germs. Clean your brooms at least once per month. Shake out debris over a trash can and rinse them thoroughly. Let them soak in a bucket with a bleach and water solution for about 20 minutes, then rinse and dry. Take care not to soak wood handles, though. That nasty toilet brush should be soaked in a quart of water mixed with two cups of vinegar, a tablespoon of borax and a halfteaspoon of dish soap. Make sure you replace it every four to six months. Mopping pads and cleaning cloths can be cleaned with a quick run through the washing machine’s hottest setting. You no doubt empty your vacuum’s chamber every time you use it, but all those moving parts require attention as well. Regularly inspect your filters and replace them as needed. Check the hose, moving parts and spinning head for hair and string and clear it out. At least twice a year, wash the hard attachments in soapy water. Paul F.P. Preparing For Tax Time and Home Ownership Deductions As the year comes to an end, it’s time to start thinking about tax season, especially if you are a homeowner. You will want to SUZANNE take advantage PLEWES of all possible RE/MAX Alliance tax deductions to lower your tax burden. This is the first year that the new tax law takes effect, so many people are anxious to see whether their taxes will be lower or higher this year. Preparing for tax time and home ownership deductions will help you get your taxes done quickly and more easily. Here are a few things that you can do to prepare. Closing Paperwork If you purchased a new
home or recently refinanced, you should find a copy of the closing paperwork. The closing disclosure itemizes your expenses such as lending fees, pre-paids, etc. Some of your mortgagerelated expenses may be tax deductible. Your accountant or tax preparer will know exactly what to look for in the itemized closing statement. Mortgage Interest The interest paid on your home loan may be tax deductible as well. Your mortgage lender will mail you a 1098 form in January that summarizes what you paid in interest over the year. Be sure to provide this form to your accountant as well. Property Taxes Property taxes may also be deductible, although to a lesser amount this year. Under the new
tax law, you may deduct up to $10,000 of local taxes. This includes both property taxes and local income taxes. If you live in an area with high property taxes or a state income tax, the benefit of this deduction will be less than in the previous years, but it is still an important deduction to take advantage of. Sum Up Property Expenses For Business Use Of Home If you use your home for business or own an investment property, you should gather receipts for all expenses related to the property. HOLIDAY AMARYLLIS Are you the proud owner of a huge, weird looking bulb that a loved one insists will one day become a big, beautiful BY CAROL flower? winter creep around. Start them now and they’ll be ready to bloom in eight to ten weeks. Dutch (Hippeastrum spp.) are the large, trumpet-shaped flowers that seem to scream “LOOK AT ME” to anyone in the room. Big and bodacious, these tried and true
beauties are ideal for beginners and for those who want to try keeping the bulb going year after year. Look for bestseller Apple Blossom, a delicate china-white blushed with pink, red and white Barbados, or Red Lion in deep, rich, carmine. Cherry nymph is a delightful double flowered red amaryllis, While Peach Melba and Naranja are perfect for décor that leans toward orange tones. Miniature Amaryllis come in smaller bulbs, but produce more blooms. They typically cost more, but if you have a gardener who’s hard to please, the Cybisters (Hippeastrum cybister) have a wispy look with slender, delicate petals and long pollen-holding sepals. Amaryllis bulbs come loose or in kits with a small pot and a little soil. When shopping, avoid bulbs with half-grown sprouts; those trying to fight their way out of the box have lost their quality. Larger bulbs have more flower stalks, and bulb suppliers are required to list bulb size on the label. Bulbs under 10- one-quarter inches usually produce only one stalk. If you’ve been given one as a gift, here’s how to grow it: Soak the roots in lukewarm water for an hour. Select a pot two to three inches wider than the bulb. Fill halfway with potting soil, place the bulb in the center and add a little more soil around the bulb. Plant them so that the top half of

the bulb is left above the soil. Water once and wait for sprouting to begin before watering again, unless the soil completely dries out. During growth, keep the soil evenly moist by dampening the soil – take care not to pour water onto the bulb itself. Once the bulbs sprouts, place it in a cool room in bright, indirect light, and hold off on fertilizing. Tie floppy stalks to thin supports slid into the soil next to the bulb to keep them from toppling. Choose a warmer day for gift giving, since you don’t want the flower to go into shock. Protect them in a gift bag that is tall enough to close over the top of the flowers, then go from your house to their new home as quickly as possible. Once the bloom has faded, trim off the spent flower stalk but allow the leaves to remain. Put the plant in a sunny window and water whenever the top two inches feel dry. Don’t allow the bulb to sit in water; drain off excess that flows from the bottom of the pot. Fertilize it every two to three weeks with low strength plant food. To encourage it to rebloom, gradually reduce the amount of water in late summer over three weeks, and then stop watering. When the leaves brown and dry back, clip them off. Place the amaryllis container in a dry and dark location that maintains 50 to 60 degrees temperatures for eight to 10 weeks. Move the pot back to a sunny windowsill in November and begin to water regularly again to stimulate new growth and blooming. Colorado State University Extension, together with Boulder County Parks and Open Space, provides unbiased, research-based information about consumer and family issues, horticulture, natural resources, agriculture and 4-H youth development.
