Odors that Reduce Your Home’s Value Odors can be an uncomfortable topic, but it’s a necessary one when it comes to selling your home. Thus, it’s critical that you address these odors before listing your home for sale. Pet Odors Pets are members of the family. They’re cute, entertaining, and enrich our lives. Unfortunately, they’re not always the most pleasant smelling. Whether it be litter boxes for your cats, cages for your birds, or pee pads for your puppies, your home may contain areas with unpleasant smells. This is especially true if your pet has had accidents on carpeting and other absorbent materials in the home. You may not notice the smells because you’re accustomed to it, but the same will not hold true for potential buyers. The best thing to do is to have someone else walk through your home and provide feedback on pet odors. Furthermore, it’s a good idea to clean up pet areas within a home immediately before any showings. After all, you want visitors to notice your home’s features and not the occupants in the home.

Signs of Mold Mold actually has a smell. Well, it might not be necessarily from the mold itself but from the conditions under which mold persists. It’s often a wet and musty odor. Additionally, mold spores in the air can irritate throats and cause other symptoms in visitors. Some people are particularly sensitive to this. If you have any mold in your home, it’s best to get this cleaned up beforehand. Additionally, any wet or damp spaces should be properly dried out. A dehumidifier may just do the trick. Lingering Cigarette Smoke One of the most problematic odors in a home is from cigarette smoke. It not only lingers in the air but also leaves a film on surfaces within the home (including walls and ceilings). The amount of work necessary to remove the smell of cigarette smoke is quite significant. Thus, it can be a major deterrent for potential home buyers. If your home smells of cigarette smoke, you’ll want to reduce this as much as possible. This
means smoking outside, airing out your home, painting the walls and ceilings, washing the floors, washing window treatments and bedding, changing your air filters, and more. Although you may not be able to completely remove it, any reduction in odor will help with your potential sale. Impact on Home Values Homes with strong odors often take longer to sell and sell for less. Buyers who experience negative physical reactions when visiting a home simply won’t be as enthusiastic and motivated to buy it. Additionally, many will consider the time and expense of eliminating the problem. Because of this, home sellers should consider addressing it themselves in advance, if possible. We often treat the electrical systems of our homes as if they’re invisible, reliably delivering power day and night. That is, right up until the moment they don’t. Just like your car, electrical systems can develop a host of problems that are best fixed sooner rather than later. Don’t underestimate the complexity and importance of your electrical system. Your home’s power grid involves hundreds, if not thousands, of connections. And that many parts creates numerous potential points of failure. The U.S. Fire Administration estimates electrical malfunctions caused 23,500 residential fires in 2016. You can hire a licensed electrician for an inspection to check your home’s safety. Prices vary based on location and the size of your house. But on average, be prepared to spend a few hundred dollars on this vital checkup. Your electrician should submit a detailed written report of their findings, including recommended solutions and priority for repair based on safety. Safety First The most important element of an electrical inspection, of course, is safety. You want your inspector to focus on violations of the National Electrical Code, including the physical integrity of your main box. Loose installation, discoloration, burn marks and breaker switches that aren’t tight are all signs of things going wrong. All junction boxes should be covered and all outlets correctly grounded. LAWN AND GARDEN Tomato Taste Off a Way to Sample Love Apples The zucchinis are booming, beans are coming in like there’s no tomorrow, the first pumpkins of BY CAROL the season O’MEARA are sizing up Colorado State University Extension and onions are bulbing. With sweet potato vines rambling and fall crops nosing up out of the ground, you’d think I’d be a content gardener. I am, mostly, but there’s a hole in the garden and in my heart: no tomatoes in the garden for me this year. The love apples-of-my-eye are banned from the premises for three years, thanks to Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus. It causes the fruit to have swirls of yellow across an otherwise red fruit, with leaves and stem to darkening, withering, and dying. The disease is spread by thrips insects, tiny bugs that are nearly impossible
to manage in the garden. To beat the bugs and their disease passenger, I stopped planting my favorite crop for three years. Now I live vicariously through everyone else’s tomatoes, hoping for a handout. I love them all, so it doesn’t matter if they’re big, little, red, yellow, purple, and orange. We’re entering tomato season with its wealth of rainbow colors. Cherry tomatoes like Matt’s Wild Cherry, Isis, Sungold, and Black Cherry may be little in size but big in flavor. Each of these tasty morsels is sweet enough to woo new devotees to growing them. Matt’s Wild Cherry, a currant type, is a tiny, prolific tomato about the size of a pea. Don’t let its size fool you – it knocks off contenders for best flavor year after year. Salad tomatoes that shake your kitchen up with big flavors and

: Let's start from the bottom up. If you're not going to use tile, usually you need to first choose a premade shower base. 10

Shower bases are factory-made and available in different sizes and materials. A cast-iron shower base can be a solid choice. For alternative shower wall and ceiling materials, composite panels are becoming very popular for custom stalls. A composite panel is a high-end, heavy-duty waterproof sheet. The special wall sheets are made in many colors, textures and patterns. They can also be custom cut and joined together with special seams to create a one-of-a-kind look. The main advantage with a
colors are Green Zebra, Lemon Boy, or Japanese Black trifele. Each has bold enough flavor to stand on their own, but combined in a colorful caprese salad, they shine. Although I’m a tomato geek and love them big and small, I will admit that when the beefsteaks come in, it’s my favorite part of the summer. Huge, brightly colored, and heavy with the promise of outstanding taste, the beefsteaks are the late season love apples that finish summer with a bang. Of the big ones, it’s hard to beat Brandywine, but Pineapple, Pruden’s Purple, Cherokee Purple, and Paul Robeson give it a run for the money. Sweet and balanced with acid, Pineapple is a large yellow tomato streaked with
red. But make a note to look for Berkeley Tie Dye, a newer variety that will get you grooving. Gardeners, if you’ve wondered what those tempting tomatoes taste like, but don’t have room to grow them all, head out to the Taste of Tomato in Boulder.
