A part of the community for almost four decades, the 2021 Larmier County Fair is bringing you fun and festivities again in the form of good old-fashioned pancakes like mom makes. The Lions Club is cooking the meal and coordinating donations. This year they will be your choice of a free piece of ham or sausage along with your helping of free pancakes and a complimentary cup of Joe to boot! All paid for— down to the paper plates—by Alpine Bank with the efforts of bank Executive VP, Dustin Fisher who used to be a member of the Fair board. The breakfast is free to everyone who comes out to the Fair on Sunday, August 8 from 7 to 9:30 a.m. but donations to the Lions Club are greatly appreciated and benefit their vision programs for the underserved. In past years upwards of 1,200 guests have been served at this fantastic pancake favorite at the fair. This year, Chairman of the Pancake Breakfast and Member of the Lamier County Fair Board, David Kaufman, anticipates even more guests. “We are expecting a surge. Now that people are out and about more after the restrictions of COVID, we expect more in attendance, somewhere around 1,500 people.” So, if you do the math that’s nearly 100,000 pancakes served at the fair’s ReporterHerald.com
past pancake breakfasts and this year alone, they will make and serve approximately 3,000 pancakes in one morning. That’s quite a feat and a coordinated effort you’ll want to be a part of! After organizing and coordinating this event solo for the past 5 years Dave has a partner in Scott Lara. Thanks to their efforts and coordination, there will be about 15 area officials serving pancakes this year including the county assessor and even the coroner. The mayor of Loveland and the new mayor of Estes Park will be there, to name a few. Popular Country musician Tim Black will be returning this year as well. The event all takes place under the tent and is coming back bigger and better than ever. T
here is nothing more downright old-fashioned and heart-warming than a parade. Fantastic floats, blaring bands, rodeo royalty and highstepping horses are as exciting and wholesome as they were over 100 years ago when the Larimer County Fair started. It’s especially sweet since the fair is the first large-scale event in the arena since its closure in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Larimer County Fair & Rodeo Parade kicks off Saturday, July 31 at 9:30 a.m. at First and Railroad in Loveland and ends at Cleveland and Fifth. There may be synchronized walking units, bands, color guards, majorettes, drill teams, dance/cheer/gymnastic/theatre groups and car clubs. The horse teams and riders are sure to please the crowds. (Don’t worry, each rider or equestrian group has to provide their own clean-up unit!)
MEET THE MARSHAL
The 2021 Larimer County Grand Marshals perfectly represent this year’s theme, “Better Together.” Bill and Elizabeth Markham farm east of Berthoud and are strong supporters of the ag community. They have lived in the Berthoud/Loveland area all their lives. Bill began showing at the Larimer County Fair in 1954 and has been involved ever since. Elizabeth enjoys entering her

baked goods in the open division and has won many grand champion and reserve grand champion awards. Bill and Elizabeth’s two children, Jennifer and Brett were members of Little Thompson 4-H Club and were involved in 4-H for 10 years. During this time Bill was on the Larimer County Jr. Livestock Sale Committee and has attended all the Jr. Livestock sales, even to this day. Bill was a strong advocate in getting the FFA program in the Thompson school district, which now has 100+ members and growing. Their granddaughters, Anna and Cate Schlagel, are members of the Berthoud Highlanders 4-H club and enjoy showing livestock and baking.
PARADE PRIZES
Parade participants are vying for prizes in categories including Non-commercial, Commercial, 4-H and FFA and Specialty Units and the highest award, the Commissioner’s Sweepstakes award for the most outstanding entry. They will be judged on how well they develop the theme, how much they appeal to the audience of the parade, how well they are built, use of color, animation, sound effects, proportions, balance and space. Just a few of the rules: The parade entrants can hand out items into the crowd or street but cannot throw them Participants are not allowed to discharge a gun or rev their engines near the livestock. They cannot shoot water guns or throw water balloons at the July 25, 2021
spectators. Bands must provide musical entertainment “under proper training ideals.” Floats and groups aren’t allowed to impede the continuous flow of the parade Floats will be going no more than five miles per hour, so they’ll be easy to view as they roll by. They are not allowed to impedee the flow of the parade. Floats cannot be any longer than 13 ½ feet tall, 16 feet wide or longer than 60 feet..

According to Darryl English, the event coordinating lead, the Board members want to involve all Larimer county. “We’re not just Loveland, we’re Larimer County proud,” he said. “We want to see people from Estes Park, Windsor, Fort Collins, everywhere. The board has been planning the parade since January and they’re ready for a great event.

COUNTY FAIR SHOWS LARIMER COUNTY GROWING AND GOING STRONG
By Linda Thorsen Bond, Larimer County Fair Guide The projects that will be displayed at the Larimer County Fair are more than interesting. They represent almost a year of learning, exploring and growing. According to Larimer 4-H Extension director Kerri Rollins, the county fair is the culmination of the projects 4-H students have 14 LARIMER COUNTY FAIR GUIDE
been working on most of the year. “There are 45 projects they can choose, ranging from cake decorating to model rocketry,” she said. “They choose their project and learn record-keeping as they track their experiences. For example, the students record what it costs to bring their horse to the fair, what it costs to keep a horse all year long, what it costs to take it to a show, [and whether] they won money or didn’t. It’s all about positive youth development, learning responsibility, confidence, speech and demonstration, record keeping, budgeting, and working on a project from beginning to end.” There’s exploration and learning going on in the open class too. “That’s a longtime historic fair event, like an old-time county fair,” Kelli said. “We’re thinking of new categories for the open class that go beyond the traditional. There are the regular entries in quilting, baked goods, creative crafts, gardening—almost anything anybody can submit to be just to be judged.” Rollins said some of the biggest ReporterHerald.com
interests of 4-H students are cake decorating, archery and livestock. She said one of the undersung heroes of categories is model rocketry, where young people build a rocket to specs and fly it as a part of the county fair. “We’re trying to say 4-H is more than livestock,” she said. “The Front Range is changing and we like to feature some other things we do here like rocketry, outdoor cooking and photography.” Another aspect is the Dairy Bar in the McKee Building. It has food, ice cream and refreshments during the fair that benefits the Junior Leadership Club (JLC) –additional and secondary club for members 13-18 that want to experience more out of the 4-H program. Katy Daywalker is in charge of that aspect of the Fair. Chris Ashby, director of Larimer County’s Event Complex, said there are a few changes this year. “As for the Ranch being in charge of 4-H events, it is really only the Livestock Competitions this year,” Chris said. “We worked with the Extension Service and 4-H leadership to move the competition oversight to the Ranch at the suggestion of State 4-H. State 4-H really did not feel it was appropriate for them to be overseeing July 25, 2021

competitions and encouraged the change. Operationally, there will be very few changes. We did reorganize the barns and show rings a bit to allow more kids to show animals during the full days of the Fair, August 5-10.” Classes and shows will remain mostly the same this year though they will have a slightly different schedule. 4-H projects will still be shown in the McKee building during the Fair as in the past and that will continue to be managed by 4-H.” Of course, this has been a tough year because of COVID-19 but Larimer County 4-H, historically, is home to one of the largest 4-H programs in Colorado. Youth participate in fun, hands-on learning activities supported by the latest researchbased curriculum from Colorado State University. Participation in 4-H assists youth in developing leadership, responsibility, citizenship, and life skills through
experiential learning. 4-H is a community of more than 6.5 million young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. The 4-H community also includes 3,500 staff, 538,000 volunteers and 60 million alumni. A recent impact study measured the impact that the 4-H Youth Development experience has had on Colorado’s young people. Results confirm that youth who participate in any organized out-of-school activities are less likely to engage in a variety of at-risk behaviors. 4-H Youth Development members were less likely than their non-4-H Youth Development classmates to use drugs, or smoke. 4-H Youth Development members also had a significantly more positive outlook on life and the world around them than did non-4-H Youth Development members.

s the song goes, “...it’s dust and mud, it’s the roar of a Sunday crowd.” But at the Larimer County Fair & PRCA Rodeo, it’s that and a whole lot more. At long last, the fair and the rodeo are back, and the enthusiasm for this annual familyfriendly event is off the charts. The 2021 Larimer County Fair PRCA Rodeo, presented by Pedersen Toyota, will make its return to the Budweiser Events Center at The Ranch on August 8-10. The rodeo action starts at 7 p.m. each night. This year’s PRCA Rodeo boasts award-winning bullfighters each night, the ever-popular Mutton Bustin’ (also each night), and Hall 16 LARIMER COUNTY FAIR GUIDE
The intermissions are bound to make even the toughest cowpoke get emotional. Opening night, August 8, is “Local Heroes Night: Honoring Military and First Responders,” sponsored by Occidental. On Monday, August 9, the intermission will feature the 4-H Parade of Champions, sponsored by Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply, which showcases the hard work of the Larimer County 4–H livestock champions. And new this year for Tuesday, August 10 only, the first 1,000 ticketed rodeo guests through the doors will receive a Rodeo Clown Bobblehead souvenir sponsored by Thompson River Pediatrics. I love the horse industry and cannot get enough of riding these incredible animal athletes. I live and breathe rodeo and am so grateful to represent the sport of rodeo throughout this next year!” This year’s Queen’s Contest in which contestants participate in competitions for public speaking, horsemanship and more takes place July 31. Start time for Tyler Rich is 8:15 p.m. Tenille Townes to follow. On Saturday night rising country stars Tenille Townes and Tyler Rich will co-headline after Track45 opens. Track45 is a sibling trio – Jenna, Ben, and KK Johnson – who have been making music together basically their entire lives. They take smalltown experiences and stories and spin them into a unique and fresh take on country music. If you aren’t familiar with Tenille Townes, you are in for a treat. The 26-year-old singer-songwriter, Tenille Townes, earned accolades for her wise-beyond-her-years ballads. After the Canadian moved to Nashville less than a decade ago, she released Living Room Worktapes, which included “Somebody’s Daughter,” which made the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 2018. Tuesday, iZCALLi will give the final concert of the 2021 Larimer County Fair. iZCALLi makes the kind of music you leave home to: melancholy folk lashed to driving beats that pin the pedal to the floor. The band formed in Denver over a decade ago. Since then, they’ve released five LP’s and performed hundreds of times, attracting fans of every ethnicity and background. Named for the Mexican birthplace of member-siblings Miguel (lead guitar/vocals) and Brenda Avina (bass)—drummer Luiggy Ramirez hails from Colorado— and the Nahuatl word for rebirth, iZCALLi has swirled its sound from Latin-tinged echoes to punching rock to filthy blues, in English and Español. VOLUNTEERING AT THE FAIR By Katie Feindel, Larimer County Fair Guide Without the help of hundreds of volunteers every year, the Larimer County Fair would not be the fantastic event that it is. Assistant Director of the fair, Diana Frick, explains the extent of the volunteer efforts at the fair: “It takes hundreds of volunteers to help produce the county fair. Anyone can sign up to volunteer. We do ask that minors under 16 be accompanied by an adult.” “We have volunteers that come from civic organizations, clubs, businesses, and individual citizens. Duties include welcoming guests at the gates, monitoring entertainment areas such as the kids playland and Ninja Nation, driving shuttles to
transport guests, staffing the information booth and volunteer office, set up and clean up at the pancake breakfast as well as helping keep the grounds clean (empty trash cans, straighten chairs in seated areas, trash around the grounds, etc). It is never too late to sign up to volunteer this year. Volunteering is a way everyone can give back to the community we live in. Plus being at the county fair is a fun environment. ” As the Assistant Director, Diana oversees the event team that organizes and plans the public components of the county fair (vendors, entertainment, carnival, building and grounds layout, bands, activites). She also works with the 4-H Extension Department and volunteer livestock and open class superintendents to run the competitions programs dur-
ing the county fair. Without the many efforts of people like Diana and the hundreds of volunteers at the fair, the Larimer County Fair would not be the great thing it has been for so long. When Diana was asked why volunteers come back, year after year to help out at the fair, she said this, “We do have returning volunteers. They return because it is fun. Everyone is there to have a good time, watching the laughter and smiles is satisfying.
