CORNHOLE TOURNAMENT By Misty Kaiser, Larimer County Fair Guide Let the bags fly! Cornhole—the ever-popular backyard pastime— gets its own spotlight at this year’s Larimer County Fair. Prove your game has aim at the Cornhole Tournament. While not an official league-sanctioned tournament, it will certainly give players a chance at bragging rights. Teams of two players—any age welcome—get their game on in the Center Courtyard on Sunday, August 7. Check-in will be at 2:30 p.m. with a start time of 3 p.m. Game boards, and bags will be provided, though if you consider yourself a bag-snob,
you are welcome to bring your own bags. Each team gets a guaranteed three chances to prove themselves, but beyond that, advancement relies on skill alone. This year’s tournament is even going high-tech. In order to participate, players must dwonload and register through the Scoreholio app, which actually makes the whole process smooth and seamless. Scoreholio keeps track of scores, lane assignments and game times, for you, all on your phone. The registration fee is $80 per team and your can download the app through Amazon App Store, Google Play, Apple App Store or link through your web browser at Scoreholio.com.
Teams will be competing for a variety of prize packs including swag, gift cards and more. AXE WOMEN LOGGERS OF MAINE When asked what a reason and purpose for the fairs is, Larmier County Fair President, Mr. Marvin Witt, said, “We want the community to learn about agriculture and where food comes from that you buy in the grocery store. Like milk, some young people don’t know it comes from livestock. And that eggs come from chickens. The fair is a time to educate, celebrate and have fun.” The Larmier County Fair is packed with agricultural education and celebration-and pure FUN! One of the best, most thrilling events at this year’s fair is Axe Women Loggers of Maine sponsored by I Matter. Formed in response to a need for designated competitions and events for “lumberjills, ” Axe Women Loggers of Maine is an organization of competitive logging sports professionals. Founded in 2010, they have been acting as ambassadors for the sport ever since. They’ve forged a path across North America entertaining and educating millions while demonstrating competitive skills in a heritage sport that has traditionally been male-dominated. The Larimer County Fair is one of many stops on their current tour across the country and one of only three in Colorado. They will be performing daily shows on the grounds in front of the McKee Building. he parade may have passed us by but it would not be the success that it is, year after year, without the efforts of so many people both behind the scenes and participating in the event. There is nothing more oldfashioned and heart-warming than a parade and it couldn’t happen without the fantastic floats, blaring bands, rodeo royalty and high-stepping horses that are as exciting and wholesome as they were over 100 years ago when the Larimer County Fair started. Darryl English, the event co-
ordinating lead, said, “This event couldn’t take place without the incredible volunteers, sponsors and a wonderful community standing behind it! We are truly blessed to have such incredible support.” The ingenuity and creativity shown in every parade entry is always impressive. This year’s participants showed their commitment to their “Cowboy Boots and Country Roots” and the Larimer County Fair Board is delighted to thank them for all the hard work they put in this, and every, year. No less important are the volunteers who give their time to make sure that the event moves smoothly.
They ensure that fair and parade guests stay safe and informed and above all, have a great time. Bob and Debbie Dehn of Loveland are honored to be selected as this year’s Larimer County Fair Parade Grand Marshals. As Loveland residents for the past 43 years, the Dehns have deep roots in the community as small business owners, dedicated to continuous service.
their three children joined the Hoof Beats club and Debbie became a leader for the goat and horse program. Shortly after, while Debbie was teaching Science for Thompson R2J School District, Bob and Debbie opened Saddle Ridge Farms, a horse boarding, breeding and training facility, raising Paint and Quarter Horses in west Loveland. Debbie continues to serve as a horse project leader for the Desperados club and has been the co-superintendent for the horse program at County Fair for the last 15-plus years. Bob currently serves on the Advisory Committee for the construction of the new 4-H horse and livestock building at The Ranch.

Front Range Fire Protection for 38 years. The Dehns have poured their extra time and energy into countless local non-profit organizations, including youth sports teams, local horse clubs, the Community Kitchen and Interfaith Hospitality Network. They’ve worked with organizations and programs for youthat-risk and children with special needs and most recently have served as Board members for Hearts and Horses Therapeutic Riding Center in Loveland. Bob and Debbie’s children all still live in Loveland and have young children of their own. Following in the Northern Colorado agricultural tradition, Bob and Debbie’s grandchildren have already taken an interest in horses.

4-H TEACHES LIFELONG LEADERSHIP AND SKILL WITH THE HELP OF THE COUNTY FAIR
By staff, Larimer County Fair Guide As the largest youth development organization in the country, 4-H teaches kids life and leadership skills, as well as perseverence. The entries displayed at the Larimer County Fair represent culmination of projects 4-H students have been working on most of the year. More than 30 4-H clubs throughout Larimer County participate in the fair and kids are encouraged to choose an individual Fair project that interests them. 14 LARIMER COUNTY FAIR GUIDE
According to Larimer 4-H Extension director Kerri Rollins, “There are 45 projects they can choose, ranging from cake decorating to model rocketry,” she said. “They choose their project and learn record-keeping as they track their experiences. For example, the students record what it costs to bring their horse to the fair, what it costs to keep a horse all year long, what it costs to take it to a show, [and whether] they won money or didn’t. It’s all about positive youth development, learning responsibility, confidence, speech and demonstration, record keeping, budgeting, and working on a project from beginning to end.”
4-H Competition
According to Rollins, some of the biggest interests of 4-H students have traditionally been cake decorating, archery and livestock. But that’s not to say there are not many other ways to participate in developing an area of interest—model rocketry, for example, where young people build a rocket to specs and fly it as a part of the county fair. “We’re trying to say 4-H is more than livestock,” she said. “The Front Range is changing and we like to feature some other things we do here like rocketry, outdoor cooking and photography.”
Open Class
There’s exploration and learning going on in the open class too. “That’s a longtime historic fair event, like an old-time county fair,” Kelli said. “We’re thinking of new categories for the open class that go beyond the traditional. There are the regular entries in quilting, baked goods, creative crafts, gardening—almost anything anybody can submit to be just to be judged.” 4-H projects will be shown in the McKee building during the Fair and Open Class projects are on display in the FNBO South Hall.
The Dairy Bar
Another important (and delicious) 4-H feature is the Dairy Bar in the McKee Building. Junior Leadership Club (JLC) serve food, ice cream and other refreshments during the July 31, 2022
fair that benefit their organization. JLC is and additional club membership for 4-H kids 13-18 that want to take 4-H to the next level. The Dairy Bar has been a longstanding favorite of fairgoers and participants alike. Don’t miss this continuing tradition.

Larimer County 4-H, historically, is home to one of the largest 4-H programs in Colorado. Youth participate in fun, handson learning activities supported by the latest research-based curriculum from Colorado State University. Participation in 4-H has produced community leaders and business owners, including many in Larimer county, but primarily it helps youth develop the skills to succeed in life, no matter what they choose to pursue. 4-H is a community of more
than 6.5 million young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. The 4-H community also includes 3,500 staff, 538,000 volunteers and 60 million alumni. A recent impact study measured the impact that the 4-H Youth Development experience has had on Colorado’s young people. Results confirm that youth who participate in any organized out-of-school activities are less likely to engage in a variety of at-risk behaviors. 4-H Youth Development members were less likely than their non-4-H Youth Development classmates to use drugs, or smoke. 4-H Youth Development members also had a significantly more positive outlook on life and the world around them than did non-4-H Youth Development members.

In addition to all the wonderful exhibits, foods, and events, the three shining members of Rodeo Royalty in attendance this year will feature three Coloradans—two of which hail from Larimer County! MORGAN CROUSE
2022 Larimer County & PRCA Rodeo Queen
Morgan Crouse, the 20-year-old daughter of Jay and Dawn Crouse, is proud to have been named Larimer Country & PRCA Rodeo Queen for 2022. A native of Fort Collins, she is currently a sophomore at Front Range 16 LARIMER COUNTY FAIR GUIDE
Ashley Baller Community College, studying surgical technology. Following graduation, she hopes to begin a career in interventional radiology and work at a local hospital. She’s firmly committed to her community and looks forward to the opportunity to give back where she can. In the spring of 2021, Morgan took to riding a friendly quarter horse named “Smart Lil Chilli Pepper,” better known simply as Pepper. At 16 years of age, Pepper loves to work cows and run hot laps. Morgan states that even though they have not been riding together long, they have already grown into an incredible team. Morgan has already participated in 11 Larimer County Fairs and last year was her final year in the Larimer County 4-H program with the Desperados 4-H Club. She has come to truly appreciate the relationships she has built through this program— relationships she says “are priceless and will last me a lifetime.” As the 2022 Larimer County & PRCA Rodeo Queen, Morgan is grateful for the opportunity to travel across Colorado to represent Larimer County and Colorado’s great western heritage. Miss Rodeo Colorado 2022
Ashley Baller was raised in Parker, where she was an active 4-H member and enjoyed competing in all-around and ranch events. In 2018, She earned a Bachelor of Science from Colorado State University in equine science with concentrations in business administration and Spanish. While there, Ashley participated in the CSU Legends of Ranching program, the American Quarter Horse Judging Team, and the Equine Science Stewards. The 25-year-old daughter of Chris Baller and Cheryl Sena, Ashley has served as a Multilingual Resources and Communication Manager for the American Quarter Horse Association International Department (AQHA). She helped lead initiatives to enhance the AQHA member experience abroad and expand the quarter horse breed worldwide. Her goal is to begin a Master of Business Administration program soon. Ashley is honored to serve as the 66th Miss Rodeo Colorado and July 31, 2022
promote the Greeley Stampede’s 100th anniversary while preserving Colorado’s rich western heritage. As the first Latina Miss Rodeo Colorado, Ashley seeks to strengthen relationships between English and Spanish speakers. She hopes to give back to the equine and agriculture industries that helped her grow personally and professionally. She wants to promote kindness and faith while also teaching others about agriculture and rodeo sports. Ashley is delighted to serve, inspire, and educate her county, state, and beyond. Ashley Baller, as a first-generation cowgirl, graduate, and bilingual Spanish speaker, cannot wait to encourage youngsters to celebrate rodeo and western history.

Miss Rodeo America 2022
Hailey Frederiksen was crowned Miss Rodeo America 2022 this past December 2021 in Las Vegas. The
daughter of Trevin and Megan Frederiksen, she is a first-generation college graduate from Colorado State University, where she majored in Animal Sciences and minored in Agricultural Business. After her reign as Miss Rodeo America 2022, she intends to get a master’s in agricultural communications and work as an advocate for the agriculture community. 24-year-old Hailey also recently represented the Centennial State as Miss Rodeo Colorado 2020-2021. Her favorite pastimes include horse riding, barrel racing, breakaway roping, and dancing. As an official spokesperson for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), Hailey will travel about 150,000 miles and appear at nearly 100 rodeos across the US. In addition, she will be making appearances at schools, civic groups, and other special events where she will promote rodeo sports, western cul-
ture, and the agriculture industry. Hailey will also serve as a spokeswoman at various promotional events and model for western clothing companies, newspapers, advertisers, and other service providers to the western industry. The idea behind Miss Rodeo America is to find young people who are representative of and eager to promote agriculture, rodeo, and the western way of life. They should embody professionalism, speak intelligently, and possess integrity, character, wisdom, and grace. Having crowned her Miss Rodeo America 2022, the PRCA feels Hailey Frederiksen exhibits and demonstrates these traits admirably. The Larimer County Fair and PRCA Rodeo would like to congratulate Morgan, Ashley, and Hailey and thank them for all they’ve done for Colorado, agriculture awareness, western life, and the time-honored sport of rodeo.

A
s the song goes, “...it’s dust and mud, it’s the roar of a Sunday crowd.” But at the Larimer County Fair & PRCA Rodeo, it’s that and a whole lot more. Both the fair and the rodeo returned last year, after a year-long hiatus, to much enthusiasm from guests and participants alike. This year’ is no different. The 2022 Larimer County Fair PRCA Rodeo, presented by Pedersen Toyota, will make its return to the Budweiser Events Center at The Ranch on August 7-9. The 18 LARIMER COUNTY FAIR GUIDE
rodeo action starts at 7 p.m. each night. Even if you’re new to rodeo, it won’t take long to get swept up in the excitement. This year’s PRCA Rodeo boasts award-winning bullfighters each night, the ever-popular Mutton Bustin’ (also each night), and Hall of Fame Stock Contractor Beutler and Son Rodeo Company, which has been producing some of the largest, most popular rodeos across the United States since the 1930s. Of course, there are seven other events rounding out the night: Bareback, Bull and Saddle Bronc Riding showcase the talents of riders including the specialty act of John Harrison, while Steer Wrestling, Team and Tie-Down Roping bring the intensity with skill and speed.

The audience cheers as kids have the time of their lives playing cowboy. Each participant does their best to hang on to a sheep as it runs across the rodeo arena. Participation is chosen by random drawing prior to the event, limited to kids ages 5 to 7 and weighing under 50 pounds at the time of the competition. There will be a limit of 10 kids per show.
THEME NIGHTS
The theme nights are bound to make even the toughest cowpoke get emotional. Opening night, August 7, is Military and First Responders Night, presented by Krazy Karl’s Pizza, McKee Wellness Foundation, and Greeley Hat Works. On Monday, August 8, 4-H Youth Night, the intermission will feature the 4-H Parade of Champions, sponsored by Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply and Loveland Ready Mix, which showcases the hard work of the Larimer County 4–H winners. The Parade of Champions are the reserve and grand champion animals. In years past, swine, poultry and rabbits have been shown off on a trailer as beef cattle, market goats and sheep paraded behind. And Tuesday, August 9 only, while supplies last, guests will receive a Richard Rule Bull Rider Bobblehead souvenir sponsored by Thompson River Pediatrics. Commemorative of an ever entertaining evening at the rodeo.
RODEO ROYALTY
Witness the crowning of the 2023 Larimer County and PRCA Rodeo Queen on Tuesday night at the rodeo.
The 2022 queen Morgan Crouse, will pass down the title to the new 2023 queen in a ceremony to include her parents, the three County Commissioners, Fair Board members, and key sponsors of the Queens Program. The County Commissioners place her queen sash on her shoulder and hand her a Rowes Flowers bouquet while the family of Shamrock Buildings presents her with buckle, chaps, and leather satchel. Then the family of 287 Ranch Supply presents her with a saddle. Finally, Julie Sathers Brown of Sathers Leading Jewelers places the crown on her hat. From that moment on, throughout her year, whenever the 2023 Queen is at an event representing Larimer County she must be dressed in “attire” with her sash, buckle, crown, and if on horseback, her chaps and saddle. The new queen then mounts her horse and takes her first lap around
the rodeo arena!

The Fairgrounds are open August 5 - 9 for the rides, concerts, activities, 4-H events, and amazing food you know and love. Rides require tickets or bracelets but admission to the fair is free. The PRCA Rodeo is a ticketed event. Tickets for the PRCA Rodeo are $18 and $22, plus applicable fees, depending on the seats available. FAIR SUMMER CONCERT SERIES BANDS TAKE THE STAGE AT LARIMER COUNTY FAIR HERE’S THE CONCERT LINEUP! By Elise Oberliesen A trip to Larimer County Fair is not complete until you nosh on blue cotton candy—take a spin on the Ferris wheel—and whirl around while singing silly love songs at the free concert main stage. Fair organizers booked a diverse range of professional musicians for the free concerts series that takes place in the evenings from August 5 to 9. The concert lineup includes local Colorado musicians growing their fan following—to bands with national acclaim and solid bookings. The staging area is one stage with a dual purpose. During daytime hours on Saturday and Sunday only—the community stage welcomes local community performances. And by night, that same stage becomes the main stage for professional musicians there to rev up the crowd. “There is one physical stage set up at the Larimer County Fair. During the daytime there are community performers--and in the evening it [the stage] will host the main acts,” said Teah Romano, event coordinator with the Ranch Event Complex, in Loveland.
