he Winery at Holy Cross Abbey in Cañon City is gearing up to host its annual Harvest Festival. Always during the last weekend of September, 2017 marks the 16th year for the festival. Celebrating the year’s grape harvest with music, food and the arts. The highlights of the festival include the release of a specially labeled Harvest Fest Riesling, featuring the artwork of local artist Vivian Y. McCasland, winner of this year’s Harvest Art Competition, book-signing by TV personality and featured author, Lee Clayton Roper (Fresh Tastes from a Well-Seasoned Kitchen), a wide variety of quality artisans, and, of course, wine tasting! This year’s Harvest Fest will take place Sept. 23-24. The Winemakers’ Dinner will kick off the festivities Sept. 22 at The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park. Chef Beau Green will be pairing his exquisite cutting-edge cuisine with award

winning Abbey wines, crafted by winemaker Jeff Stultz. Reservations for this event are highly recommended, and it is expected to sell out quickly. Tickets are $100 per person, and can be purchased by calling 719-276-5191. The Harvest Fest will begin with the traditional Blessing of the Harvest by Father Jesse Perez, of St. Michaels’ Catholic Church. He has been the priest there for three years, and before that nurtured the congregation in Leadville. He was born in raised in Salida, and has close ties to Florence as well. Kicking off the day’s music will be Hammerstadt Fusion of the Soul. A local favorite from Colorado Springs, they will be performing from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Hammerstadt is a four-piece electric ensemble, with a repertoire of blues, rock,

jazz and fusion music. Taking the stage at 2 p.m., Cañon City’s own Deja Bluz will bust it out with their classic rock and roll sounds. Brothers Dan and Glenn McCarter have been playing together since 2002, but it was Glenn and friend Rick Kamerzell, who started the band 25 years ago. Glenn and Rick are both original members of the Belvedere Blues Band, and their other band member, Tom Mallory, is a classically trained woodwind musician from California. At 10 a.m. Sept. 25, the festival will begin with the mellow sounds of Mistura Bela, of Denver. Meaning Beautiful Mixture, this group is well known for their Brazilian sambas and Latin and jazz standards. They will take the stage from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Closing the show on Sunday afternoon is the raucous and crowd-pleasing Inman Brothers Band, who will take the stage at 1:30 p.m. From grand stands at the state fair to music festivals up and down the Front Range, they are a Colorado favorite. Founded in the late 1970s, the five-piece southern rock band is based in Colorado Springs. Chili roasting, fresh fall produce, arts & crafts, food vendors, wine, music and a fun zone for the kids…so many reasons to attend this year’s 16th Harvest Fest. FLORENCE PIONEER DAYS RANCH LIFE
The 90th annual Pioneer Day is weeks away and Florence will be celebrating the lifestyle for many people in the area with the theme of “Ranch Life.” Originally created as a way to honor the town’s history and the pioneers who settled there, the Pioneer Day Festival in Florence has grown into a weekend celebration, with activities for everyone to enjoy. It has also become a way to locally kickoff the fall season. Last year, hundreds of people filled the sidewalks along Main Street for the parade and around 120 floats participated as the parade was filmed as part of Netflix’s film, “Our Souls at Night.” This year’s event will not include a film crew, but the annual weekend celebration will include royalty at the kickoff 7:30 p.m. Sept. 15. There, the Pioneer Day Royalty will be introduced at the Rialto Theater during presentations by the “Spirits of the Past.” Then, on Sept. 16, the Pioneer Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. with a flyover along Main
Street. “In the parade will be marching bands and a New Orleans style band from Ft. Carson,” a news release said. The parade will also feature trailers being pulled by tractors, which will carry the Pioneer Day Royalty, as well as floats, cars, motorcycles and Denver Broncos alumni in corvettes. After the parade, the celebration will move over to Pioneer Park where crafters, food vendors, games and free tractor rides will be available. Games for children will also be set up in Pioneer Park, as well as bounce houses and obstacle courses. Live music will be performed by the Geezers and Dallas Alley. A shuttle also will be provided to the Fremont County Airport for the annual Air Show, which will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 16. The Pioneer Day festivities will end 9 a.m. Sept. 17 with a tractor pull taking place in Pathfinder Park. The weekend will also host the annual “Junktique Market,” which will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 15 and 16.
