T
here’s a place by the river where dinosaurs roam, it’s a lodge longregarded as a tourist’s delight for the blankets and sweatshirts that were forgotten when it was daylight. The Trading Post of the Rockies has an enormous shopping floor, with rooms for Fiestas, Old Westerns, American Indian lore and more! Blankets and t-shirts are always a must! At the Trading Post of the Rockies there’s walls upon walls of that stuff, plus like before when it was called the Twisted Pine store there are leathers, cowhides, furs and now there’s lots of furniture! The new owner is Aaron Sidransky and with his wife Michelle, they purchased the building at 450 Moraine Avenue in the spring of 2021. “I’ve known the previous owners since I was ten years old,” said Sidransky, “I have

E
stes Park is known for its scenic views, amazing landscapes, a vibrant downtown and memorable lodging. In the last few years, visitors and residents have also come to know Estes for something else, and that’s its craft brewery scene. The first businesses to stake their beverage claim in Estes Park occurred long before the Estes Valley Development Code allowed such things. Estes Park Brewery opened in 1994, by Gordon Knight, who owned High

Country Brewery in Boulder. Today it is owned by Tyler Lemirande. Snowy Peaks Winery was
also one of the first in town. Founded in 2005 Candice Mohr grew a fine vinification facility. The majority of her
grapes are grown on the western slope in Palisade, Colo. and a few come from Burlington, Colo. with 25 different wines and blends available including Merlot, Syrah, Viognier and Riesling. Stop by to sample their award-winning, handcrafted wines along with charcuterie and sometimes even live music. In July 2014, the Estes Park Town Board approved an ordinance to allow breweries, distilleries and wineries to operate legally under the Estes Valley Development Code. Downtown’s evolving skyline By Daniel Sewell Trail-Gazette
L
ong-time visitors and locals alike will surely notice a new skyline in the downtown corridor of Elkhorn Avenue. For some people these changes are less of a delight but instead a realization of the passing of fortunes recognized in lights. There are many businesses this year that added fresh paint to their store front, others changed hands and names, while others facades were completely redone. Of the last variety none did so as much as two owners who have buildings that are technically on Moraine Avenue. One of those is Michael Ballad, a well-known new business owner who has converted the former Colorado

Home Collection into Estes Park Distillery, which is easy to see with the addition of many wooden barrels around its periphery; it’s right next to The Barrel, aka the former Trail-Gazette office (for those of you that like history). Down the street at the

S
he grew up along the Tongue River on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Southeastern Montana, a member of the Suhtai branch of the Tsistsistas people. Speaking only the Cheyenne language until she went to school, where she was forced to learn English, Alaina Buffalo Spirit was enmeshed in the culture, people and land that would eventually help heal her through art. In the tiny, dusty village of Birney, Montana, she learned about life through the unconditional love of her family, her grandparents – a couple deeply rooted in the traditional lifeways of the Tsistsistas. Her grandfather was a Medicine Lodge instructor and part of the Tipi Ceremony or Native American Church. Alaina remembers him owning a team of horses that would pull a wagon for family transportation. Her grandmother made a deep impression as well – instructing her to never hit another Cheyenne, or especially her own children as this would “make them crazy.” She also taught her a basic tenant: women are sacred. They bring life, are a source of comfort and are the very backbone of family and community. It is this that feeds her creativity today. In 2002 Alaina lost her only son to a brutal murder. He left her with two beautiful grandchildren that she lovingly raised, but in the aftermath of his shocking death she was lost. And when her grandchildren would leave to visit their mother, she says

n 1922, Fellowship Park opened to receive its first visitors, Rev. Baxter and his family. Albert A. Hyde, who was an important benefactor of YMCA of the Rockies, developed the idea of Fellowship Park, which also expanded to include his Friendship Lodge some four years later. Hyde purchased the 78 acres on which Fellowship cabin was developed, and deeded it to the YMCA with the understanding that he had the final decision on how the land would be used. Hyde, who is known for his philanthropic support of organizations that promoted

Historic Fall River Hydroplant opens for the 2022 season By Estes Park Museum
T
he Historic Fall River Hydroplant will opens its doors for the summer season on Wednesday, June 1, 2022. Located at 1754 Fish Hatchery Road in Estes Park. This plant was constructed in 1909 to produce electricity for the Stanley Hotel and surrounding areas. Later, F.O. Stanley sold the plant to the Public Service Company of Colorado. In 1945, the Town of Estes Park purchased and maintained the Hydroplant until it was severely damaged in 1982 by the Lawn Lake Flood. Operating as an interpretive site since 2002, the Historic Fall River Hydroplant will be open Wednesday – Saturday, 1 – 4 p.m., through September 30, 2022. Guided tours of the Hydroplant will be given at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. No reservations are required and admission is free.

Lazy B and Chuckwagon show returns to Estes Park By Tim Mosier Trail-Gazette
S
tarted in 1963 by four singing cattle wranglers, the Lazy B Chuckwagon and Show celebrates the life and times of the cowboy in the American west between 1860 and 1900. After performing in Estes Park for decades, the show was brought to a halt over 20 years ago but is now being revitalized by a local couple for 2022. The ‘B’ in Lazy B comes from Babe Humphrey who was one of the four original founding wranglers. Babe would later go on to start the Bar J Chuckwagon in Jackson Wyoming which closed down in September 2021 after a 42 year run. It is said that the folks in Nashville told him the idea of a Chuckwagon supper and show where the guests would come to him would never work. There are now seven locations across the west that host guests from around the country to enjoy an authentic cowboy supper and hear songs of the old west.

Tom Justin joined the Lazy B band in the late 1960s and by the mid-70s, he had taken over as owner and lead singer. The show was an absolute smash hit in town for multiple decades with Justin and the wranglers performing for Jimmy Carter at the White House and later at the Grand

Peaks, there is also Lumpy Ridge Brewery, Rock Cut Brewery and Avant Garde Aleworks. “We love that there is a strong collaborative spirit among the Estes Park craft beverages producers,” said Candice Mohr, owner of Snowy Peaks. “Everyone is so supportive of each other and are willing to share information and ideas.” The breweries and winery in town are not just popular with residents and visitors; they are also a great yearround economic driver for Estes Park. You can stop into the breweries themselves to see the brewing equipment and perhaps catch a grain dump, or a tank cleaning. But what most people go there for is to grab a drink, and enjoy the atmosphere. Lumpy Ridge Brewery is a converted gas station, owned by Nick Smith. Opened in 2015 this ever-developing brewery has been entertain-
ing live music, and a nice collection of art. While small, the brewery has a great vibe, with a dog-friendly patio, rotating food trucks, and lots of variety in small batch brews. Just down the road is Avant Garde Aleworks. Owners, Christian Newendorp and Maha Jaya took over what was essentially an abandoned shop and turned it into a beverage oasis. With an Italianinfluenced waterfall, succulent garden and viewing area of the brewing equipment, the atmosphere is clearly a conscious effort of emphasis. What you might not see much of at this brewery are pint glasses, as globes help release the aroma of the beer. “Rocky Mountain glacier water needs nothing to make world-class beer,” Newendorp said. In 2016, a local investor funded a restart on the west side of downtown but after a fall out between ownership and management, the operation dissolved after only one year. Then, in 2017 Quentin and
Roxanne Wedan lead the formation of what is now the Lazy B Chuckwagon and Show. Quentin grew up in Estes Park and learned the ins and outs of the Chuckwagon business during the 10 years he worked for Justin at the original Lazy B. “It is very much a family business as three generations contribute the time and hard work necessary to keep the doors open each summer,” Quentin said. “With on stage talent led by Barbara Barleen, Michael J, and yodeling champ Vic Anderson, the new Lazy B Wranglers are working to maintain this western tradition in Estes Park.”
The 2022 season begins the weekend of June 18, ends Sept. 24, and will operate six days a week. From Tuesday to Saturday doors will open at 5 p.m. with supper served at 5:30. treats that fuel all the children on Elkhorn’s streets! unique building in Estes Park holds a treasure trove of gifts and goodies. The Estes Ark, located at 521 Lone Pine Dr., is one of the first businesses you notice if you are driving in to Estes Park from the Big Thompson Canyon. First opened in 1995, the business was sold three-anda-half years ago to Kim Zare who splits her time between Estes Park and Houston. “I run this store for the joy of it, not just for the income of it,” Zare said. “I want it to be a special experience for the people who come into the shop. The animals bring the children so much joy. I have grandparents who have brought their kids here and now they bring their grandchildren here.” Zare is miniature artist (concentrating on doll house miniatures) and a lifelong bear collector. She used to run a miniature museum on the bottom floor of the ark. After a short time it became evident to her that simply running the store would be a full time job. “When we bought the business, Estes Ark was getting

Ark has been exceptionally busy this summer, a trend she related to the pandemic. “I think everyone is so excited to be out,” she stated. “They’ve been cooped up and now they are traveling and shopping.” One of Zare’s passions is selling children’s books at reasonable prices. As a mother of four, she knows how important books are for a child’s development. “Books are outrageously expensive,” Zare said. “Even at a store like WalMart, you might pay $16.99. I sell most of my books for 99 cents to $3.99.” Zare often shops estate sales to find the treasures she sells at her shop. In September, she switches over from concentrating on the animals to concentrating on the antiques and vintage items.
As for the interesting building, Zare stressed that she spends a lot of time and effort maintaining it. “I love the building and I would hate to think it would fall into disrepair,” she said. Zare said she knew she would retire in Colorado and had bought a place in Estes Park. She was in the Estes Ark shopping one day with friends. Her daughter overheard that the owners were talking about listing the building. Zare remembered, “I went to the counter and said ‘Would you please ring me up for the Ark?’ I’m so thankful because I love running this business. It was true luck of the draw and it was a wonderful transaction for both of us. I makes me so happy. Being here is so different from our Houston lifestyle.” Owner Kim Zare said shoppers can find a stuffed version of every animal on the ark.
