Blazie for Best Dog Blazie is 11 years old, born on Sept. 28, 2008. She is a Pit Bull -Rottweiler mix. She is a survivor of bone cancer that took her leg in 2018, but that doesn’t slow her down. You can find her mingling with her neighbors during her walks to eating popsicles while sun bathing with her friends. She loves her family and friends!
Tiki for Best Cat Tiki is 11 years old and was born on Aug. 16, 2008. Although he is considered a senior, he still acts like a big kitten! He is so sweet and loving and always up for a playful romp. His favorite thing... besides catnip is tearing up cardboard. He also enjoys watching videos of birds and fish. But mostly he loves to nap.
Tiki Daisy for Best Other Pet Daisy was born May 4, 2019 (5 months old). Daisy is a Holland Lop, who is a litter box trained indoor rabbit. She enjoys running and playing in the backyard with the dog. Adopted her June 29. She is very affectionate and loves people and to be held.

Of puppies, kitties and kiddos By Luanne Kadlub For Greeley Tribune
W
hen is a good time to introduce a new pet into your family home? What kind of pet is best for kids of different ages? And how much responsibility should kids have in taking care of their dog, cat, hamster or goldfish? It all depends, experts say. Kristen Collins, vice president of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or ASPCA, said pets can teach children about empathy, the importance of responsibility and caring for other living beings. 4
“Research has shown that pets can improve children’s communication and social skills as well as reduce stress,” she said. If you’re considering bringing home a pet, you’re not alone. According to the 201516 American Pet Products Association’s National Pet Owners Survey, 65% of U.S. households own a pet. One of the first things to consider when bringing home a new pet is your family’s lifestyle. Do you live in a house with a yard? Or an apartment with limited outdoor space? Does your family lead an active lifestyle? Or are you more sedentary? “If you’re fairly sedentary in an apartment, an Australian shepherd is not for you,” said Jenny Oglesby, a veterinarian at West Ridge Animal Hospital in Greeley. “They will do better with a family that gets out and about or has a yard.” And there is no set rule on what age to let your son or daughter get a dog or cat or fish or gerbil. What experts do agree on is that no matter what kind of pet, children must first Best Pets | 2019
be taught safe and acceptable treatment of the animal. “Kids mature at different speeds,” Oglesby said. “Some are able to deal with feeding and walking their pet when they’re 7 or 8 years old, and others may not be able to even as teenagers.” Jennifer Freeman, PetSmart’s resident veterinarian and pet care expert, said children can begin giving care to pets at age 3 or 4 with parental supervision. And once they reach age 5, they can begin giving basic care to small pets like fish or hamsters. Bigger pets, like cats and dogs, should primarily be cared for by adults until children reach age 10 or so, she said. “Betta fish are a good option for young children who can assist in feeding them or cleaning their tanks with the help of a parent,” she said. And if you’re looking at getting a hamster, guinea pig or other small rodent, keep in mind they are nocturnal creatures, Oglesby said. “They might not be a particularly interesting pet for kids who want to get them out and play during the day. They can get kind of cranky and bite.” She also cautions against getting them for real young children who might not understand that the tiny creatures shouldn’t be held tightly or be overly pestered. Rabbits and chinchillas, which require a bit more care and tend to live longer, make good pets for intermediate pet parents and older children, she added. However, Collins noted that each type of rodent has a different lifespan, requires a different kind of food and a different environment. “Families should know these characteristics to be sure they are giving their pet the best care possible,” she said. Bigger pets, like cats and dogs, should primarily be cared for by adults until children reach age 10 or so,” Freeman said, adding that children should not be fully responsible for the pet. “Certain chores are fine, but pet care takes time, skill and
are fine, but pet care takes time, skill and continual observation to ensure that the pet’s needs are being met. Children are in school and have after-school activities, therefore they don’t have the proper amount of time to be the sole caretaker of the pet.” Children can, however, contribute to the pet’s care, including making sure the pet has fresh water and food, walking and bathing them, and maintaining the litter box, eating and sleeping areas.
Choosing a pet
“The best type of pet for kids to care for changes depending on age and overall behavior of the child,” Collins said. To make a good choice when adopting a shelter dog or cat is “to base that choice on the individual animal’s personality and behavior rather than looking for a specific
breed. We encourage potential adopters to keep an open mind and heart when visiting their local shelter because they may fall in love with a pet they’d never considered before.” Adopters should ask the shelter staff about a dog or cat’s socialization and energy level, how they get along with children and other pets already in the home, along with their training and background. If you bring a kitten home, Oglesby said it’s important to set boundaries for how long a child can play with the cat and to watch for signs—a twitchy tail, ears laid back— indicating the cat is ready for alone time. “Little tiny kiddos are more likely to be pulling tails and ears, so it’s good to have a place that the cat can get to that the kiddo can’t so they can take a break,” she said. Fish, she said, can be “an interesting, visual

stimulant for little kids,” and beginner fish such as tetras and goldfish, are easy to care for. The main concern should be that they’re not overfed. For that reason, she recommends setting up ground rules on how much to feed the fish and when, as well as how often to change the water. However, pet ownership is not for everyone. “The biggest mistake I see a lot is adults relying on the child to do all the care for the animal, because eventually they lose interest or they don’t have the same sense of responsibility as the adult,” Oglesby said. She suggests having a family discussion before obtaining a pet to lay out ground rules and consequences for not sticking to them. It might mean finding the pet a new home or delaying getting a pet in the first place.

Siberians are the cat’s meow for people with allergies By Luanne Kadlub
Jennifer Feighny is a cat-lover and her
husband and four sons love cats, too. Just one problem: Two family members are allergic to felines. So when the question arose: Can we get a cat? Feighny did some research, expecting to find the naked cat her only option. “With four young boys, I didn’t need anymore naked,” Feighny laughed. And then she discovered the Siberian. “They have long hair and they’re supposedly hypoallergenic, or as much as they can be,” she said. People allergic to cats are actually allergic to their dander, which is created when a cat licks its fur and the saliva dries and flakes. Siberians are different from other cats as they have a lower than average occurrence of the allergy-causing protein in their saliva, according to the Cat Fanciers’ Association. Though it hasn’t been scientifically proven that Siberians are hypoallergenic, many who are allergic to the general cat population do find they can be around the Russian beauties. Siberians have only been in the United States since 1990, when the Cold War between the U.S. and Soviet Union thawed enough to allow the Siberian to be exported worldwide. The earliest known reference to the longhaired Russian cat is from
1000 A.D. and they have been featured in Russian fairy tales and folklore ever since. “Siberians are amazing cats,” Feighny said, adding that they are a loving, affectionate and playful breed. When Feighny learned that those with cat allergies can often cohabitate with Siberans, she began saving her pennies — Siberians cost well over $1,000. In the meantime, she got on the waitlist of a Denver breeder who later became her mentor when “the plan” to bring home one cat expanded to possibly becoming a breeder of Siberians herself. “One thing led to another,” she began. She returned home with a mother cat and, on a temporary basis, her litter of kittens to see if, first of all, the family liked having the cats and remained allergy-free, and secondly, to see if becoming a breeder was something they might actually want to consider. “It worked out great. We love having kittens around,” she said. And so she started her own cattery, NoCo Siberians. Feighny, whose professional background is in animal behavior, has a doctorate in biological education from the University of Northern Colorado. She now works from home as an online professor for five different universities: Colorado State University Global Campus, Southern New Hampshire University, Unity College, Thomas Edison State University and the Best Pets | 2019

American College of Education. After bringing home the first mama cat, it wasn’t long before she added another mama, then another and another. She now has five Siberians: Cosby, the stud, who prefers his own space in his downstairs “castle,” while Gracie, Lilly, Hope and Sierra have the run of the rest of the house. When the girls start “singing,” a sign they’re in heat, they spend a couple weeks alone with Cosby. The mama cats have two litters each per year, usually in June-July and DecemberJanuary. When it’s time to birth their babies, they head for the kitten cubby in Feighny’s home office, where she also sleeps until the babies arrive. The kittens are raised as members of the Feighny family so when they go to their “furever” homes, so far mostly in Colorado, they are already accustomed to small children, vacuum cleaners, guitars and even dogs, she said. Before a kitten can be released to its new owner(s), however, the humans must pass the allergy test by rubbing the cat all over their faces, and then rubbing their eyes. If there’s no puffy, red eyes, hives or other allergy symptoms, it’s a good fit.
