Paul Everett Jr.
April 9, 1938 - October 25, 2019 Paul Everett graduated to his forever home in heaven on October 25, 2019 at 11:10 a.m. He was born in Ardmore, Oklahoma on April 9, 1938 and eventually moved to Texas where he lived for most of his adult life. He moved to Colorado in 2000 where he retired as a real estate agent; he loved to help people find their perfect home. He married June Marie Everett in 1962, and they were married for 57 years until his death. He leaves behind his loving family - wife June Marie, son Randall Everett, daughter Sherrie Limitone and her husband Dan, granddaughters Krista Brown and husband Geoffery, Kayla Farber and her husband Steven, and a very precious great-granddaughter baby Joy Marie Brown. He is preceded in death
by his father Paul Everett Sr., mother Tompie Everett, brother Delbert Everett, and sister Karen Sleighter. Paul loved his family and was so proud of each of them. Paul wanted to be remembered as a friend and a devoted family man, but most important of all a Christian man with honesty and integrity. A funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Thursday October 31, 2019 at Bridge to Life Church 222 N. Orchard Ave. Canon City, CO 81212. Burial to follow at Lakeside Cemetery. Gloria "Jean" Smith June 24, 1936 - October 4, 2019
Gloria "Jean" Smith went peacefully to be with Jesus on October 4, 2019. She was 83 years old. She is survived by her four children: Ron (Rose) Huff, Randall Huff, Valerie (Mark) Francomano, Jerry (Jenny) Huff, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents Armand and Marion Bashaw, her brother Joseph Bashaw, husband Lacy "Rob" Robertson and husband Richard Smith. Gloria Jean Bashaw was born on June 24, 1936 in Marquette, MI. Jean, as she preferred to be called, was raised with her brother in the snowy Upper Peninsula where she developed a love for the outdoors and became something of a tomboy. Jean studied at Emmaus Bible School and eventually became a nurse. In 1972 she moved with her husband Dale Huff to Colorado Springs, CO where they raised their four children. Jean's love of children and nurturing spirit led her to teaching vacation Bible school and child evangelism classes in her neighborhoods. Jean was a fan of the mountains and did several back country pack trips. Always the artist, Jean painted scenes from these
mountains and various places around Colorado. She loved to travel and had visited all 50 states and much of Canada. She loved to take pictures and put together numerous photo albums. Jean loved her home on five acres in Penrose, CO, a veritable petting zoo with many exotic and cherished pets, where she was always creating something new to capture the imagination of her grandchildren. Jean loved her family. She spent as much time as she could with her children and grandchildren. Her grandchildren would tell her they could taste the love in her cookies and treats. Jean loved many things, but mostly she loved the Lord. She was always praying for her family. Her calm and easy demeanor made her a source of comfort and wisdom. In her last months she carried a little packet of Bible verses that she would read and share with others. We take great comfort in the knowledge that she is now with her Lord and Saviour in heaven, and we suspect that somewhere up there she is holding a paintbrush or a camera preparing the newest set of pictures for our next visit. Until then she will be missed.
Wanda Sue Jenks June 8, 1955 - October 24, 2019
Wanda Sue Jenks, 64, of Terre Haute, IN and formerly of Canon City, CO and Talladega, AL, passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at the Gibson Family Center in Union Hospital with her family by her side. She was born on June 8, 1955, in Ashland, AL to William Buford Carr and Betty Sue McClain. Wanda is survived by her sons, Patrick K. Wheat of Terre Haute, Jeremy Wheat of Terre Haute, and Nickolas Jenks of Detroit, MI; grandchildren, Dillon Crawford, Alexis Wheat, Tristan Wheat, Liam Jenks, Austin Jenks, Lily McConnell, and Aiden Jenks; siblings, Kathy, Joann, Luke, and Judy; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her grandmother, Beuler McCain. Wanda worked as a hairdresser for many years. During her time in Canon City, she owned Crazy Cuts salon. Prior to moving to Colorado, she owned and operated the Best Little Hair House in Town in Talladega. Wanda had all the
characteristics of a great hairdresser: she was a good listener, empathetic, and had a great sense of humor. Wanda was a deeply spiritual woman and had a relationship with God. After moving to Terre Haute to be closer to her sons, Wanda loved riding her bicycle through the neighborhood, reading, and growing tomatoes in her garden. She was an avid thrift shopper and was always finding bargains at yard sales and Goodwill. She was a big fan of Donald J. Trump. Most of all, Wanda was a loving mother that devoted her life to caring for her sons. She always made sure they had what they needed and knew that they were loved. She will be truly missed. Per Wanda's wishes, she will be cremated and returned to Canon City, Colorado. Roselawn Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements. EPA Brownfield Assessment Grant
Money to help with Fremont County properties By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record
A three-year $600,000 EPA Brownfield Assessment Grant awarded to Fremont County in 2018 has proven helpful in assessing abandoned, vacant, underutilized and contaminated properties for redevelopment and reuse, and there is still an opportunity for others to utilize the grant funding. The purpose of the grant is to transform underutilized properties from liabilities into assets that revitalize communities and bring neighborhoods back to life. Dave Laney of Stantec Consulting Services Inc., who leads the environmental consulting team,
presented an update on the grant – which required no matching funds – to the Fremont County Board of Commissioners during the Oct. 22 meeting. Laney said there are two more years remaining on the grant. The first year was spent on assessments, and the second and third years of the grant will be used for clean up and planning efforts. The Hotel St. Cloud was one of six properties in Fremont County to utilize EPA Brownfield Assessment Grant funding for Phase 1 environmental site assessments. Laney said some of those sites also had regulated building materials surveys to look for asbestos and
lead-based paint. “I suspect in the next year several of these properties will be redeveloped, renovated and put back into productive use,” Laney said. “We are anticipating that the county will realize some property tax revenue and jobs will be created in the not too distant future.” He said, according to the EPA, that on average, for every one dollar in grant money that is utilized, $18 in private investment comes back into the community. “I think on some of these properties, it will actually be more than that,” Laney said. “We are hopeful that the next year will be at least as good as the first year and we will
have more properties assessed.” There are enough funds remaining for 10 additional Phase 1 ESAs and six Phase 2 ESAs (which includes the collection of soil and groundwater samples) and an areawide plan that looks at several properties that may be underdeveloped or historically has suffered. “Right now, Cañon City is using some of the grant funds to do an area-wide plan for the riverfront area,” Laney said. “That includes the Skyline Steel property and some of the adjacent properties.” Commission Chair Dwayne McFall said people who have oil, gas or asbestos contamination should consider applying for the
program, which does not cost the landowners. “If you were to go to a bank to take out money or apply for a loan to develop a property, they would ask you for some of these studies to be done,” Laney said. “With this particular grant program, property owners can get that work done for free.” The county’s website, www.fremontco.com, has a designated page for the grant, with links for information and site nomination forms. BLM plans pile burns in Fremont County By Daily Record Staff
The Bureau of Land Management-Front Range Fire and Aviation Management Unit is preparing to conduct pile burns in 10 locations this fall and winter. Pile burns will occur between Oct. 30, 2019, and March 2020, depending on favorable weather and fuel moisture conditions. The objective of the pile burns is to remove the slash left behind from timber harvests and previous fuels-thinning treatments. These timber harvests and fuels treatments remove beetlekilled timber and other fuels, reducing the risk of future catastrophic wildfire. Fuels treatments also help create various stages of plant succession, which is critical to the health of fire-adapted ecosystems. The pile burn locations are as follows: Dawson Ranch – 50 piles. Piles are hand-built, consisting of Piñon pine and juniper trees. The piles are located on BLM land immediately west of Dawson Ranch subdivision and 2.5 miles southwest of Cañon City. Hole in the Rock – 2,400
piles. Piles are hand-built and the surrounding fuel type is Ponderosa pine, Piñon pine, juniper and Gambel oak. The burn is located north of Cañon City off Fremont County Road 11 and east of the High Park Subdivision. Likely Gulch – 2,000 piles. Piles are hand-built and the surrounding fuel type is Piñon pine, juniper and Ponderosa pine. The burn is located south of Texas Creek off Colo. 69 and Road Gulch. Whiskey – 3,000 piles. Piles are large hand-built piles and the surrounding fuel type is Ponderosa pine, Piñon pine, juniper and grass. The burn is located 6.5 miles southwest of Cripple Creek, south of Fremont County Road 11 and west of the High Park Subdivision. Kerr Gulch – 251 piles. Piles are hand-built, consisting of Piñon Pine, Juniper, Ponderosa Pine, and Douglas fir. The burn is located 1.5 miles west of U.S. 50, three miles northwest of Coaldale. Thompson Mountain – 35 piles. Piles are machine-built piles with a surrounding fuel type of Ponderosa pine,
Piñon pine, juniper, and Gambel oak. The burn is located 13 miles northwest of Cañon City, 2 miles east of Colo. 9, and in the Deer Haven area near Thompson Mountain. Smoke may be visible in the area both during and after the burn operations. Smoke will be most visible during the warmest part of the day. With cooler temperatures in the evening, smoke may linger and accumulate in low-lying areas. Fire managers have developed a detailed prescribed fire plan and have obtained smoke permits from the State of Colorado for the planned burns. Prescribed fire smoke may affect your health.
