James Lee Blankenship July 30, 1966 ~ June 14, 2019

James Lee Blankenship II, beloved Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Uncle and Friend, passed away June 14, 2019 at the TRU Hospice Care Center in Longmont. He was 52. Jim was born July 30, 1966 in Sacramento, CA to James Lee and Josephine (Rubio Lopez) Blankenship. After time in Tennessee and Florida, he moved with his family to Canon City, CO where he grew up and graduated from Canon City high school. Jim graduated from Colorado State University in 1988 with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. On August 3, 1996 he married Jennifer Hamilton in Boulder, CO. Living in Louisville, CO, they were blessed with three children. He loved being a father and he loved spending time with his children, whether is was at the pool or on the ski slope and every place in between. He tried to attend every performance, sporting event, or school activity that he could. He was so proud of them all and was often heard bragging about their accomplishments. Jim had a 30 plus year career as a civil engineer, consulting on many projects near and far. Starting his own firm, JLB Civil, nearly 20 years ago, Jim had an excellent reputation for providing high quality

engineering services and was highly regarded by all that knew and worked with him. During this time, he also served at the town engineer for the Town of Lyons. Jim was recognized by the American Public Works Association, Colorado Chapter, in 2010 for his engineering and construction management services for the Town of Lyons Main Street Project, and again in 2017 as the Professional Manager of the Year for his services to the Town of Lyons flood recovery and restoration. Jim loved mountain biking, skiing, hiking and anything that allowed him to spend time outdoors. He was preceded in death by his mother. Jim will be dearly missed by his wife Jennifer and their three children Benjamin, Andrew & Owen; father Jim Blankenship; brother Dan Blankenship & wife Cindy; in-laws Anita Hamilton, Amy Keith & husband Darrin, Russell Hamilton, Wally Hamilton & wife Sherri; nephews and nieces Curtis Blankenship & wife Hannah, Eric Blankenship, Samuel Keith, Spencer Keith, Emily Hamilton, & Corwin Hamilton. Jim also leaves behind a great circle of friends that he loved as family, a family too numerous to name.

Larry Haskell

January 9, 1955 ~ June 17, 2019 Larry Haskell was born on January 9, 1955 in Lamar, Colorado to Kenneth L. and Juanita (Wright) Haskell and passed away on June 17, 2019 in Canon City, Colorado at the age of 64. Larry was a beloved father and a wonderful person to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He had a one of a kind personality that he will be remembered by. Larry could be goofy at times and was quite the jokester but he also had a large heart with lots of love for those who knew him best. Larry will be loved and missed every day. Larry is survived by his sons, Johnny Haskell of Jamestown, ND and Kevin Haskell of Denver, CO; two grandchildren; siblings, Dan Haskell of

Indiantown, FL and Brenda Haskell of Canon City, CO; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other family and a host of friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Juanita Haskell; and his brother, Wayne Haskell. Services are under the direction of the Peacock Family. A celebration of life memorial service for former Lamar, Colorado resident, currently of Canon City, Colorado, Larry Haskell will be held at 10:00AM on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the Peacock Family Chapel. John Harold Pope, Jr. December 4,1931 - June 7, 2019

Retired USAF Hospital Sgt Major, CMSgt, John Harold Pope, Jr., 87, of Penrose, Colorado, passed away peacefully at home, June 7th, 2019, after having bravely fought a long, dignified battle against Alzheimer's Disease... He was born December 4, 1931, in Erlanger, Kentucky, to John Harold Pope, Sr. and Mildred (Leisl) Pope. He is survived by three sons, John, David, and Daniel; two daughters, Phyllis Walden, and Rebecca Webb; 5 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Joan (Warman) Pope; daughter, Judy Sturgeon; 5 sisters, Mildred Patricia Miller, Nancy Sims, Mary Ann Sears, Bonnie Keith, Sandra Pope; 1 brother, Michael Pope; and his father & mother. He was raised in Erlanger, KY, served Mass as an alter boy for 12 years, lettered in basketball, and graduated from St Henry; joined the USAF, married the Love of his life and raised 6 children, while serving his country sent them on a new adventure every 4 years; during this busy time he attended college, became a certified scuba diver, earned his commercial pilot's license and became a highly skilled Alaska Bush Pilot. After retiring from the USAF, he became a flight/ground school instructor while logging several thousand hours as a commercial pilot. Some of the activities he enjoyed were eating favorite foods & snacking on candy; playing golf, traveling,

camping, exploring, rockhounding; snowmobiling, boating, fishing, hunting; DIY, carpentry, woodworking & crafts; gardening, farming, ranching; music, singing, astronomy, photography, reading, writing, and story telling; attending Mass with his wife for many years, volunteering, and he was a longtime volunteer at the Holy Cross Abbey and their American Indian Museum... He had an enduring strength, a heart of gold, an everlasting Love for God, Church, Country, his wife and family, beloved family pets, and he tried to do something worthwhile everyday of his life... Once while traveling, they stopped at a rest area to eat lunch, and noticed a broken down traveler working on his car; John asked if he needed any help, and he said, "No. I have all the parts I need here." Mary fixed him lunch, and they learned the traveler was heading home after being away several years... As they were leaving, John handed the traveler a handful of cash and said, "I hope this helps you get home." On June 7th, it was Dear John's turn for going home... Gone Home. Graveside services were held at Our Lady of "the Assumption" Catholic Cemetery, Silver Cliff, CO, with Father Stephen Injoalu presiding, Wednesday, June 12th, at 2:00 PM with services under the direction of Harwood Funeral Home.

Rosemary (Ray) Snyder January 31. 1942 ~ April 25, 2019

Rosemary (Ray) Snyder, 77, passed away April 25, 2019 in McAlester, OK. Rosemary was born on January 31, 1942 in Kansas City, KS to James Jeffers Ray and Eva Ruth (Conover) Broughton. She attended El Cajon High School. She lived in California for awhile then moved to CO, where she spent most of her life. Rosemary worked at King Soopers bakery in Golden, CO when she met the love of her life, Charles. They married on May 27, 1972 in Golden, CO. From there they moved to Lakewood, CO, then to Canon City, CO (where they had spent their honeymoon in 1972). They had recently moved to McAlester, OK. She loved anything that sparkled, the Denver Broncos, scrapbooking, garage sales, the Colorado snow,Elvis Presley, and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Henry Snyder and her sister Betty Wright. She is survived and deeply missed by her children, Sheri (Clyde) Bernard, Penrose, CO, Lori (Dan) Wood, Alexander City, AL, Tiffany (Jesse) Townley, Indianola, OK, grandchildren: Kassondra DelVecchio, Erich (Delaney Steele) Bernard of CO, Ethan Wood of Al, Morgan (Chance) Reese, Stetson, Remington and Garrett Townley of OK. Great grandchildren: Tanner McLaury, Kaydee, Gracie and Daxtin Ronco of CO, special cousins Carolyn Murray, Larry and Bonnie and several much loved nieces and nephews. God blessed us with the most loving and caring mother anyone could have. It brings us peace that she is with our daddy in heaven.

Blue Spruce Gallery will host Second Saturday reception

The Blue Spruce Gallery in historic downtown Florence will host an exhibition of the artwork of Jeanie Truitt and Lori Ann Dickerman who have put together a diverse and entertaining show. Their opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. July 13 during Second Saturday at 205 W. Main St. in Florence. Truitt believes watercolor can be magical, versatile and fun, but it was difficult when she was first learning. One customer told her that he liked her work, but said: “you will have to die to be famous.” She pressed on, learning the rules through practice and through delight in the glorious wonder of color. Her paintings are bright and whimsical. Dickerman is a multi-media artist who retired after 33 years at an engineering firm in 2018. She worked as a technical illustrator for 17 years, then in IT for the remainder of her career. She relocated to Canon City in 2008 to be closer to her grandchildren and to start painting again. She is loving this new chapter of her life. She has won several awards, primarily in watercolor, but works in a wide variety of mediums. She is a member of the Florence Arts Council, Fremont Center for the Arts, the Pueblo Art Guild and the Southern Colorado Watercolor Society. Meet the artists during this Second Saturday event. Royal Gorge Bridge celebrates 90th Fourth of July with music, thrills and fun

Royal Gorge Bridge & Park celebrates their 90th Fourth of July weekend with bang up entertainment beginning with music by Ashley Barron, Nashville recording artist and Colorado’s own, Flying W Wranglers. Barron will be performing at the Elk Park Amphitheater on July 4, and the Flying W Wranglers July 7. Birds of Prey Show by Nature’s Educators will be in the Plaza Theater July 5-7, and free Face Painting by Zany Paint will be “across the bridge.” In addition, the park’s newest attraction, the Royal Gorge Via Ferrata, is open daily along with The Cloudscraper Zipline and Royal Rush Skycoaster—experiences sure to create a memorable Fourth of July. Barron is Rockin’ New Country and follows in the steps of country greats such as Johnny Cash and Miranda Lambert incorporating her life experiences and stories into her writing and relatable music. Her newest hit climbing the charts is “Wrote A Song About It.” Music entertainment is scheduled daily between 12:30 and 4:30 pm and included in the general admissions ticket. On July 5, RVZoo and Friends will be performing original and Classic Rock Covers. July 6 will feature Starburn, with musical tributes of the 60’sand 70’s, and July 7 will feature Colorado’s popular Flying W Wranglers, the second oldest western music group, making music for more than 65 years. The Royal Gorge Via Ferrata is a one-of-a-kind climbing experience unlike any other in the country due to the sheer vertical walls and beauty of the Royal Gorge. The via ferrata is a protected climbing route that uses steel rungs, and cables with carabineers so a climber is always attached. This brand new feature is available for guests from ages 12 and up. Construction still on track Work continues on Washington Elementary, CCMS Chris Graham The Daily Record Even with a few hiccups, construction continues as planned at Cañon City Middle School and Washington Elementary School. At Washington, an abandoned fuel tank was discovered last week and soil issues also caused some problems. School officials said the fuel tank has been taken care of and geogrid will be put in the soil to help stabilize it and then a structural fill will be added. Once that is complete, the construction of the new elementary school can begin. “We had some soil issues to start with, but I think we’ve got past that point now,” Director of Operations Jeff Peterson said. “I feel pretty comfortable with Washington.” The soil settling problem is the main reason for the new Washington school as the problem was discovered four years after the school opened in 1951. “Within four years of that school being built, there was settling and structural issues,” Superintendent George Welsh said. As for CCMS, work has been halted because of an asbestos-insulated steam line running between the boiler room behind the original gym and the old vocational building. The construction crew is waiting on approval of their abatement plan from the state to begin the removal of the pipe. “The middle school is going pretty good,” Peterson said. “We have a little abatement stuff going on.” Even with the stop in work, Peterson said the crew is a little ahead of schedule. Everything else at CCMS is on schedule. The gym has been gutted for the new air handlers and the new roof is expected to be done before school starts. “Everything is on track,” Peterson said. Crews at CCMS also have been affected by the Main Street water replacement project. Plumbers have had to work with the city and construction crews to make sure water was available to the school in case of a fire. That work is also expected to be

done before school starts. “The city has been great,” said Peterson. Also on track is the grounds shop at Cañon City High School that will serve as a recycling center and Chromebook repair center for the district. The shop will be done by early August and will ﬁx a security beach at CCHS that allowed public access to the school. “It looks like we will make it,” Welsh said of the construction time frame as the new school year nears. As for CCMS, the 12th Street side of the school is expected to be done by spring break 2020. The 1925 core part of the building will be remodeled and should be completed by Thanksgiving of 2020 and the swing connecting the two building is targeted for Christmas of that year. The district received the money for the construction of both schools from the Building Excellent Schools Today grant in May 2018 after voters approved a bond
