Brenda Shirley Bustos December 16, 1948 ~ May 9, 2019

Brenda Shirley Bustos, beloved wife, mother and grandma passed away May 9, 2019 after a battle with cancer. She was the wife of Fred Bustos. They shared 38 beautiful years of marriage together. She was a baptized Jehovah's Witness since 1984. She loved her God Jehovah with all of her heart and looked forward to the day when she would be resurrected to a paradise earth. She is survived by her husband, Fred; sons, Frank (Sami) Lopez, Justin ((Maria) Lopez, Richard Bustos; five grandchildren, Frankie Lopez III, Tiffany Lopez, Kamryn Lopez, Justin Lopez Jr., and Alyssa Lopez; brother, Leo Martinez, Cindy

(Raymond) Springfield, Geneva Ayala, Felix Espinoza, Jody Espinoza along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo D. Martinez and Rose (Espinoza) Martinez; and stepfather, Joe Espinoza. Phillip "Doc" Carter July 10, 1947 - April 22, 2019

Phillip "Doc" Carter went on to his new home on April 22, 2019 while RV traveling in Arizona. He was born July 10, 1947 to Rosemary and Raymond Carter in Riverview Michigan. After graduation from High School he joined the Air Force and before leaving for Vietnam he married his high school sweetheart, Loretta Carter. During their 52 year marriage they raised two daughters, a granddaughter, and enjoyed helping with two others. He had a sales career where he earned the nickname "Doc" as he found ways of repairing industrial equipment with epoxy, even using it to hold a shifting rock up on a hill in the town of Castle Rock. The last 15 years of his career was in the RV industry, which he loved the trade shows, lifestyles and the people. Phillip was both a strong and gentle man who will be dearly missed by his loving family. He was known for sharing his knowledge and humor. He loved adventures of collecting everything from rocks to antiques. He loved the outdoors, "everything" nature, and travel as he would share all the adventures of travels, finds of vinyl records, marbles, or

metal detecting treasures. He enjoyed everything music and strumming the guitar with others in his basement vinyl record hideout. He enjoyed kids and took his own kids, and grand kids on numerous camping trips including the Church youth group he led with his wife and others. He was committed to Church attendance and the message of sharing God's love. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents and youngest daughter Wendy Carter Baker passing away just 5 months before him. He is survived by his wife, Loretta; daughter, Christie Carter Nasi and husband James Nasi Jr.,of Denver, Co; granddaughters, Amber Carter Aguilar Toc, temporary Guatemala, Morgan Baker Canon City, Co; and grandsons, Carter Baker, Parker CO. and Sailor James Nasi, Denver, Co; brothers, James Carter and family, Riverview, MI., and Robert Carter and family, Chandler, AZ. A celebration of his life will be held on June 15, at 2:00 p.m. hosted by Vineyard Church at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 10 University Circle, Pueblo Co. 81005

Charles Harry Watson October 11, 1942 - April 29, 2019

Charles Harry Watson of Canon City CO died at home with his family on April 29, 2019 after a very short battle with pancreatic cancer. Charlie was born in Douglas WY October 11, 1942 to Harry and Bertha Watson (Spellman). He was raised in, and graduated from high school in, Fowler, CO. He worked in the coal mines in Raton, New Mexico, before relocating to Canon City, where he worked for 30 plus years and retired as a Major from the Colorado Department of Corrections. "Chopper" as he was loving referred to in DOC, was known for his willingness to mentor, lead and protect his brothers and sisters in blue. Charlie married Kathy Baum in 1992. He loved his family, guns, knives, and hunting arrowheads. Charlie is survived by sister, Wynona Sims, Leota KS; children, Tanna (D.J) Miles, Canon City, CO; Gail (Marge) Watson, Mountain Home, ID; Tina (Bob) Gaines Oberlin KS; Misty (John) Vernetti Canon City, CO; Jessica (Dave) Rathke Canon City,CO; Beau (Alison) Baum, Las Vegas, NV; as well as 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Ira Watson.

He was a private man, and did not always share his feelings, but he was never afraid to say how much he loved his family. Nothing pleased Charlie more than to be at home or in the mountains with those he loved most. He could be brutally honest, but he was never intentionally cruel, and could always be counted on to protect the ones he cared for. There will be no formal burial service, as Charlie requested that his body be cremated and scattered in a private ceremony at Race Creek, but an informal remembrance of life will take place on Sunday, June 9, 2019 from 12-2 at the family cabin in South Fork, CO. He was born November 12, 1930 in Laurel, Delaware to Glenn and Ann Margaret (Workman) Evans. He was united in marriage to Hazel Evans for 64 years. Glenn is survived by his brothers, Ed (Lois) Evans of Delmar, DE, Francis (Betty) Evans of Canon City; sons, Steve (Brenda) Evans of Delmar, DE and Donald Evans of Canon City; 12 grandchildren and numerous

Cheryl Ann Ratkovich February 16, 1959 ~ April 15, 2019

Cheryl Ann Ratkovich passed away April 15, 2019 at the age of 60 in Canon City, Colorado. Cheryl lived her life in the Canon City area where she brought joy and light to her community. Cheryl was born February 16, 1959 to John "Sonny" Ratkovich Jr. and Shirley Faye Ratkovich. She graduated from Florence High School. She participated in the Special Olympics and spent a lot of time with her StarPoint family and volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. Cheryl really loved music and loved to dance. She loved her fashion too especially her tank tops and flip flops. When riding in a car she was the first to "shot gun" for the front seat. Her favorite saying growing up was "Smile.. be happy". Cheryl is survived by her mother, Shirly Faye Ratkovich Clarke; siblings, John Gary (Carmen) Ratkovich,

Patricia (Joe) Bullock, and David (Tami) Ratkovich. Cheryl was preceded in death by her father, John Ratkovich Jr. and step father, Robert Clarke. History center to host historic bicycle tour around Orchard Park

The Royal Gorge Regional Museum & History Center will lead a historic bike tour around the Orchard Park area. Participants will have the chance to take a leisurely bike ride while learning about the area. Highlights include a meteor story and a history of the apple industry. This program will be at 6 p.m. June 8. Plan to meet for the tour at Cañon Exploratory School at 2855 N. Ninth St. The program is free and open to the public. Registration is not required but participants are welcome to register at museum.canoncity.org under events or calendar if they would like to check the waiver early. Bell Tower issues a call for artists for upcoming show

The Bell Tower Cultural Center at 201 E. Second St. in Florence will be hosting “Explore Colorado” show May 31 through July 9. The multi-media show will use the great state of Colorado for inspiration for their art. 2D and 3D art is accepted. Artists may submit up to three entries for $30, non-members and $25, members. She is known throughout Colorado as a gifted art instructor, juror, art coach and critique leader. She is an active participant in the promotion of arts through civic art organizations. At least this is true according to Florence High School Class of 2019 Valedictorian Christian Robertson. “If you want to maximize your chances of success, you need to plan three or four steps ahead,” he said during the commencement exercise Friday in the Husky Gymnasium at Florence High School. “If at some point an unexpected move occurs, it is of the utmost importance that you have a backup plan. A plan B, C, D and E.” With a chess set donning his mortarboard, Robertson shared with his classmates how chess isn’t just a game, but a way of life. He said each piece on the board represents a different move one can make in real life. “Now here’s the twist: unlike a real game of chess, you cannot ﬂip the board because life never turns its back when you tell it to, but life can ﬂip the board on you,” he said. “Truthfully, life isn’t always going to play fair, but that doesn’t mean

Cañon Glass Inc. Will Be Closing Doors at The End of May!

By Michael Greene Most would say success is measured by the size of one’s bank accounts, land deeds or stocks and bonds they have accumulated over the years. I generally agree with the prior, but I recently had the opportunity to speak to a very unique couple, a couple whose idea of success may surprise you. During the June of 1992 the adventure started at 740 South 9Th St. for Dave and Felicia Fleck. The adventure was more of a venture really, a new turn key business servicing the Greater Cañon City area with all of their window and glass needs, auto and home. When asked to define their own interpretation of success, neither missed a beat, both enthusiastically declaring their customers. Over the years they have serviced hundreds, if not thousands of “friends” and time after time they became repeat customers. Maybe that is the secret to how they have kept their doors open for almost 30 years.

Well, life can take surprising twists some times and due to health issues, the time has come for Cañon Glass to close its doors. It is going to be hard, just in the short time I spent with them I could tell this wasn’t an easy decision. Felicia grinned from ear to ear when talking about her employees. She wants her gratitude to be emphasized. Many of the employees over the years have became family as well. When asked if he has any suggestions for his dedicated patrons for their future window needs, Dave advised “Just buy local”. He had nothing but kind words for all of the other window and glass companies in Cañon. Cañon Glass would love to invite all their friends and family for cake celebrating the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Please come down for some cake Friday, May 31st at 12pm. to see them off!

In the event that the water is simply too high to safely put your boat in the water, we will hold a really cool, land event. Your boat will be placed in a circle of the other entries.
