Brenda Shirley Bustos, beloved wife, mother and grandma passed away May 9, 2019 after a battle with cancer. She was the wife of Fred Bustos. They shared 38 beautiful years of marriage together. She was a baptized Jehovah's Witness since 1984. She loved her God Jehovah with all of her heart and looked forward to the day when she would be resurrected to a paradise earth. Rialto Theater to present ‘Deathtrap’

the state’s general fund, the Colorado Health Foundation and other foundations. “It’s a huge deal for us, and we’re just really excited that Rose was selected out of hundreds and hundreds of applicants,” Turner said. “It’s a big deal, and we are really proud of her.” Originally from Trinidad, Martinez was a non-traditional student who went back to school after raising her children. “I thought I am going to be paying off my student loans with my old age pension,” she jokes. On a serious note, she said one of the barriers keeping most people from pursuing higher education is student debt. She has been working to pay off her loan for 10 years. “This is just a relief,” she said about the program. “And it really makes it feel what I’ve done is worthwhile and affirming.” The mother of five grown children and grandmother of eight, Martinez said it’s been fulfilling to be an example to her family, and she is thankful for the support of Solvista and the staff there, as well as that of her family. Turner said this new program can be a game changer in the effort to help people with substance use issues, but there has to be a workforce that can step in and provide the service. “It really helps us be in a position to take advantage of some of these opportunities where for the first time we’re seeing funding and policy being created to address the opioid epidemic, to help us with the substance use challenges, and the fact that we are successfully tapping into those resources is a big deal for our community,” he said. “I’m also really proud of all the work we’re doing to ramp up substance use services.” Solvista hosts a new Community Reinforcement and Family Training group that is free and open to anyone who has family members or friends who are dealing with substance use by sharing effective strategies for helping their loved one to change. The group meets from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays at 3225 Independence Road. No registration is required.

Greenwood Pioneer Cemetery to host Memorial Day Ceremony The Greenwood Pioneer Cemetery Committee will conduct its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. May 25 at the cemetery at 1315 S. First St. in South Cañon City. The ceremony is conducted with the participation of the American Legion Post 13, Cañon City, the Marine League Volley team and the Greenwood Guard. The Committee invites everyone to this honoring of the fallen, as well as the many pioneers who are laid to rest in the National Historic Cemetery and a Local Landmark Site. The ceremony will be preceded by the American Legion Post 13 Color Guard. A ﬂag ceremony at the GAR Section (Union) conducted by the Greenwood Guard. The National Anthem will be sung by Kelli Duncan. The

speaker will be Major Ed Williamson. Also during the ceremony, the service will honor the veterans and pioneers in the Confederate section of the cemetery. The public is invited to attend these events. Residents are asked to be aware that only half of the burial plots have markers. There are no empty gravesites in this cemetery of 4,000 burials. White metal crosses now mark the unmarked graves in various places in the 10 acres. The bluebird houses have welcomed feathered friends to help reduce the number of ﬂying pests. Those attending should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared to be outside for at least one hour. Parking is by direction unless disabled and then special arrangements for closer parking can be made.

County to participate in settlement Florence-Penrose School District mulls conference with former employee changing start times Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

The Florence-Penrose School District is mulling changes to its bell schedule. In a press release Tuesday morning from the district, Superintendent Brenda Krage stated the goal is to address the overcrowding issue on bus routes. The district is proposing to change the schedule by splitting the bus routes into elementary and secondary next year to ease overcrowding. “It also allows for the separation of the elementary students from secondary students,” Krage stated. “We believe that by offering an elementary student route prior to the secondary student route provides the greatest amount of beneﬁts.” In the proposal, elementary school would be from 7:30 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. and secondary students would be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The district recently sold the Fremont Middle School building to Unbridled Holdings VIII, LLC for $515,000. The school district will move to a kindergarten through sixth-grade school in both Florence and Penrose and Florence High School now will have students in seventh through 12th. In the press release, Krage said the beneﬁts of changing the start times for the schools include

eliminating the overcrowding of school buses, allowing for teachers to coach at middle and high school levels, an opportunity for high school coaches to have morning practice and research that states secondary students benefit from later start times. The listed negative to the change was that families who rely on older siblings to pick up their younger siblings would have to find another option. The district is also considering reversing the bell schedules so secondary students are bussed first and elementary students later, but Krage stated that can create a long day for student-athletes, reduces the amount of staff eligible to coach and is contrary to adolescent brain research. Another option would be to keep the bell schedules but that wouldn’t address the overcrowding issue. Krage stated that no decisions have been made and while this change does not require school board approval, she would like to receive public input. Parents can provide that by visiting www. re-2.org and clicking on public input. The district’s goal is to have a decision prior to students and staff leaving for the year May 2324.

An employment discrimination complaint ﬁled against the Fremont County Department of Human Services is slated for a settlement conference Monday in Denver. The Fremont County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday authorized Commissioner Debbie Bell to participate in the settlement conference for the case involving a former Fremont County employee and granted authority for Bell to agree to a settlement on behalf of the county. The former employee, whose identity won’t be published because she is a victim of domestic violence, alleges the county violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. She states she was terminated from DHS while she and her son were on Family and Medical Leave Act for post-traumatic stress disorder following a domestic violence incident in June 2016. “Before the case really gets expensive, the court encourages the parties to participate in settle conference,” said County Attorney Brenda Jackson. “A complaint has been ﬁled, and an answer, no discovery or any pretrial proceedings have taken place. If it’s going to settle, this is probably the best time to settle it.” Jackson said she will be at the settlement conference, but Bell will have the settlement authority on behalf of the county. According to the complaint, the woman began working for DHS full time in 2009. She states she and her son both have disabilities, and she alleges the county “denied reasonable accommodation requests” related to her own care and related to her caregiver duties and was denied the opportunity to request donated leave. She alleges that on Feb. 2, 2017, she was told that she would exhaust available leave and would be discharged as of Feb. 10, 2017. She said she received a letter stating that if she did not return to work by 10 a.m. that day, she would be welcome to reapply for employment.

“I believe that I have been discriminated against on the basis of my disability, my caregiver duties, and in retaliation for engaging in protected activities in violation” of the ADA, she wrote in the complaint. The former employee said her physician completed FMLA for her and her son so that they could attend required meetings, criminal court proceedings, civil divorce proceedings, trauma counseling and monitored medical care to evaluate the diagnosed depression and PTSD caused by the crimes. She states that the “wrongful termination” caused her to lose her life insurance, have to cash in her retirement and lose her home. She is seeking relief for emotional distress, back and front pay, liquidated damages, consequential damages, mental pain and suffering, punitive damages, treble damages and any other relief the courts determine she and her son are entitled to. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sent a letter to the woman in November stating that although it found reasonable cause to believe that violations of the statute occurred with respect to some or all of the allegations, they could not obtain a settlement with the county. The EEOC said they would not bring suit against the county and closed the file in the case. “The Department denies that Plaintiff is entitled to judgment in her favor or to any of the relief requested in the Complaint,” states Tanya Sevy of Hall & Evans, L.L.C., in an answer filed on behalf of DHS. “The Department denies each and every allegation from the Complaint not specifically admitted herein.” The answer states that the plaintiff’s employment with DHS was at-will and could have been terminated at any time, for any reason, with or without notice; that she was provided all leave required under state statute and the FMLA; that she was provided all available paid leave in the department’s sick leave bank; and that she did not request an accommodation for a disability pursuant to ADA.

Run to protect land, water, wildlife at Hardscrabble Trail Run

Breathtaking views, a unique course and a great cause set apart the Hardscrabble Mountain Trail Run from your typical trail run. The seventh annual Hardscrabble run takes place at 10 a.m. June 1 on Bear Basin Ranch, a 3,400-acre protected ranch just east of Westcliffe. The historic ranch sits in the Wet Mountains and offers stunning views of the nearby Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The Hardscrabble courses are intended to provide a sense of accomplishment for runners and walkers, with challenging, fun and scenic 5K and 10K routes on rugged equestrian trails, two-track jeep roads and short stretches of open meadow. Participants can walk or run the adventuresome 5K or tackle the 10K run. The start and ﬁnish are at 8,913 feet in elevation. The 5K features 475 feet of vertical gain and the 10K 1,083 feet of gain. The 10K tops out at 9,039 feet. A key component of the event is introducing youth to the importance of land and water conservation and getting them outdoors in a fun and challenging way. Participants ages 17 and younger run for free. “We want to raise awareness about why land conservation matters,” said Larry

Vickerman, San Isabel’s board president. “Bear Basin Ranch is the perfect setting to allow local residents and visitors to experience what we are working to protect.” After the run, participants and spectators will enjoy a gourmet lunch, live music and prize drawings. Registration is $40 until May 29; $45 the day of the race. In addition to free registration for youth, school staff in Custer, Chaffee, Fremont, Huerfano and Pueblo counties enjoy a $10 discount on registration. Camping will be available at the Bear Basin Ranch Cowboy Camp, just across the road from the race starting line. No facilities will be provided, and no campfires are allowed.
