Stanley Arthur Blunt January 30, 1943 - January 02, 2019

On January 2, 2019, a unique person left our world. Stanley Blunt, Ret. Captain U.S. Army, died at St Francis Hospital in Federal Way, Washington. He had been lovingly cared for by daughter Sonya following a series of strokes. The son of Virginia Ludwig and Joseph Stanley Blunt, Stan was born in Denver on January 30, 1943. He grew up in Cañon City, Colorado. Stan graduated in 1961 from Cañon City High School where he was active in football, basketball and band. A bit of a “hot wire,” Stan is also remembered for riding his motorcycle up the high school steps into the school hallway and for borrowing the city steamroller and driving it down Main St. before jumping a curb—was his father the mayor then? He attended Adams State College in Alamosa, CO on a basketball scholarship. Stan enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1963. His first tour in Vietnam was with the 1st Battalion 173rd Airborne Brigade. He served four tours of duty in Vietnam--three of which followed a near-fatal combat injury that should have prevented him from returning to the field. As an experienced officer, he fervently believed it was his duty to be there for the newly-trained soldiers who were heading to the Vietnam jungles. Following a year of rehabilitation, he returned to action as a Captain and Company commander. In November 1969, he saved the lives of at least 22 trapped Americans and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. His military training included Officer Candidate School, Airborne School, Ranger School (top of his class), Special Forces, and Jungle School. He received numerous other citations during his 13-year military career, including at least one Silver Star, seven Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts. In honor of his service, a classroom building at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina is named after him. He was medically discharged in 1975. In 1975, he left on a solo, aroundthe-world sailing adventure on the RuPiPaKi, endearingly named after dog Rusty (Ru), pet pidgeon Pidgie (Pi) and a loved one left behind (PaKi). The craft was a 25-foot, single-mast, Marieholm International Folk sailboat--no motor. His goal was to learn more about himself, other cultures and ethnicities and to view America as seen from around the world. He had more than a few harrowing moments: falling from the boat without a tether, barely making it to shore

after being stung by sea anemones, days adrift on a windless sea, along with countless experiences and friendships formed upon landfalls. His extraordinary letters home are an archive to be treasured. Four years later on December 5, 1979, he returned to the U.S., passing under the Golden Gate Bridge and reportedly shouting “I LOVE this country!” Stan spent more than 20 years in Thailand before once again returning to the United States. While in Thailand, he was actively involved in the search for American POWs. In addition, he took up the cause of a Thai family whose money had mysteriously gone missing from several very powerful international banks. He eventually convinced a renowned Laotian humanitarian lawyer to take on the case pro bono and together they won a substantial settlement for the family. In 1990, Stan married Kunchalee in Thailand. Together, with their young daughter, Sonya, and Kunchalee’s two sons, Panya and Pachaya, they moved to Aberdeen, Washington in 1993 and raised their children there. In addition to being a devoted father to Sonya, Stan was active in local politics, bringing the same dogged personality to everything he believed in and pursued. He was well-known at Grays Harbor County Commission meetings, expressing his opinions about illegal immigration, government waste and other flash points. Whether you agreed with him or not, there is no doubting Stan’s fierce love for America. His deeply held convictions and passions made him the unconventional, complicated man he was: a fearless leader and hero, a traveler, a contrarian, lover of animals, challenging, and beloved. Perhaps the finest measure of Stan is in the countless messages he and his family received over the years from “Blunt’s Grunts”—the men who served under Capt. Blunt and who have been steadfast in their praise and respect. He is survived by daughter Sonya Blunt, former wife Kunchalee, sisters Ellinor Reiser, Nancy (Jerry) Beltramo and their children and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Stanley and Virginia Blunt, his son Reagan W. Mount Blunt and his beloved pets including both Mutt #1 and Mutt #2. Stan will be interred in Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, WA; a memorial service is planned for later this year.

Louise A. Graves

August 17, 1925 - January 8, 2019 Louise A. Graves, 93, passed away on January 8, 2019 in Canon City, where she had lived since 1946. Louise was born on August 17, 1925, in Coal Creek, Colorado, to Steven Bacchieri Cortesi and Maria (Bruni) Cortesi, who had migrated from Emiglia Romagna, Northern Italy, in the early 1900's. She grew up in Coal Creek and nearby Florence. Louise loved to dance. She spent many years going to dances. She met her first husband, Marvin K. Fields, at a dance in Florence; they were married on June 21, 1946, and moved to Canon City, where they lived until Marvin's passing on March 1, 1978. Louise met Kenneth L. Graves at a dance at VFW 4061, where she was a lifetime member; they were married on August 7, 1982. Kenneth passed away in November of 2002. Besides dancing, Louise was an avid bowler. She took it up with her girlfriends in the 1970's and continued to bowl with them into her late 80's. She also loved fishing and RVing, and spent a lot of summers in Gunnison. She was a wonderful baker, as well, who loved to make desserts from scratch. Louise also collected angels. After she passed, many of her friends among the staff and residents at Legacy

Care Center were able to take some of her angels to remind them of her. Louise is survived by her daughter, Melody Boydstun and her husband Mike; her grandson, Shane Boydstun; her granddaughter Shelby London and Shelby's husband, Mitch; her great-grandchildren Laney, Kaylie, Owen and Hunter; her sister, Vera Graham; numerous nieces and nephews, and many other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Fields; her son, Richard D. Fields, who passed in 1999; her husband Kenneth Graves; her brother Geno Cortesi; her niece, Stephanie Rocchio; her lifelong best friend, Corine Beck; and many other dear friends. Her family would like to express their gratitude to Legacy Care Center for all the love and care they gave Louise over the last 2 1/2 years. She loved all her caregivers and thought of them as friends. They would also like to thank the Sangre de Cristo Hospice for their care over the last few days of Louise's life. Brian LeDoux receives ﬁrst Guy U. Hardy Award By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

The Guy U. Hardy Award was created for those dedicated to service to outdoor recreation. It was presented to its ﬁrst-ever recipient, Brian LeDoux, during the 131st annual Cañon City Chamber of Commerce Banquet on Friday at the Abbey Events Center. Chamber member and award creator Ashlee Sack said Hardy received little to no credit for the things he did. “He was a man of exceptional vision, he was a man of civic duty, and a man dedicated to the betterment of our community,” she said. Guy Urban Hardy moved to Cañon City in the mid1890s for health reasons. He became a reporter for the Weekly Record, and in 1895, he bought the paper and expanded it to daily circulation in 1906. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1919-1932. During his tenure, he successfully petitioned to have 2,000 acres of federal land deeded to the city, which became known as the Royal Gorge Park. He also was successful in acquiring Temple Canyon Park and Red Canyon Park. Hardy’s great-grandson, Duncan Hardy, traveled from Denver to present the award. LeDoux, an outdoor enthusiast, enjoys hiking and mountain biking, but he discovered a number of years ago that there weren’t many places and trails to do those activities here. She loved living in Colorado and enjoyed spending time outdoors camping, fishing and hunting in the mountains with her husband, Bill, and many family members. Addie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Vicky and Dan Pretti of Colorado Springs; her grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Dennis and Carrie Pretti; and her great-granddaughter, Danika, of Boise, ID; sister-in-law, Josie Fontana; and brother-in-laws, Albert Knight and Jerry Owen; and generations of nieces and nephews. Adeline (Guerri) Tedesko, age 95, passed away on January 12, 2019. She was born in New Castle, Wyoming on July 26, 1923. She lived in Florence and Rockvale during her young life where she was raised by her mother, Virginia, and step-father, Joseph Guerri. She attended Rockvale School where she was educated through the 8th grade. She obtained a GED high school diploma later in life. She worked at Crow Drug Store in Florence during World War II. On May 28, 1946 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Florence, she married Frank Wm. (Bill) Tedesko. They celebrated their 66th anniversary in 2012 before Bill passed away on February 6, 2013. After their marriage, she had lived on the family farm in Brewster for 32 years where she grew vegetables for sale and managed the farm before moving to Florence in 1978. She lived in the Florence area for the majority of her life and was a member of St. Benedict's Church for more than 80 years. In earlier years she was an active member of the Brewster Grade School Parent Teacher Association, Florence Pioneer Day Board, and Price Pioneer Museum Board. In 1985, Bill and Addie were honored as Pioneer Day King and Queen. Addie's hobbies included sewing, arts and crafts, dancing, and

Bradley Eugene Roberts August 8, 1948 ~ December 7, 2017

In Loving Memory It's been a year. I loved you yesterday, I love you still, I always have and always will. Sandy Bradley Eugene Roberts was born in in Taft, California in August of 1948 to Thomas Royal Roberts and Alice Myrl (Donoher) Roberts. Bradley slipped quietly into the arms of his Lord on December 07, 2017. Bradley grew up in oil field country with a large extended family. Together they enjoyed off roading, camping and motorcycle racing. He also loved fire arm sports, target shooting, and hunting. He was a 50 year member of the National Rifle Association, plus a long time member of the Royal George Gun Club. He graduated from Taft Union High School in 1967. This was the second largest class ever to graduate from the school. The largest graduating class was his father's class in 1939. He joined the United States Air Force in 1968 serving three years, two of which were in South East Asia. In May of 1976 Brad left southern California for Colorado to marry his longtime friend and forever love Sandra Sprengel. They met during his visits to Canon City while he visited his maternal grandmother Opel Donoher and great-grandparents. Bradley and Sandra

were married on June 5, 1976. In September of 1976, Bradley went to work for the Colorado Department of Corrections. He was a correctional officer at the Territorial Facility and the Centennial facility until he retired in 2009. He attended Southern Colorado State Collage, graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice. He was best known as Robbie by his friends and co-workers. In 2006 he received the Governor's Award for his volunteerism as a state employee. For 39 years he volunteered for Canon City's Meals on Wheels, as a server and driver. As a 36 year member of The United Presbyterian Church he volunteered to work the computer during services, and in the kitchen as well as serving on various committees. Brad is survived by his wife of 41 years; his brother-in-law, Michael Sprengel; two nieces and nineteen first cousins. He is the first of his generation to pass on. He will be missed by family and many friends in Colorado and California. At Brads request there were no services. Services have been entrusted to Holt Family Funeral Home. Michael Lynn Sprengel March 6, 1952 ~ November 16, 2018

Michael Lynn Sprengel was born in Goodland, Kansas on March 6, 1952, at the Boothroy Memorial Hospital to Ferdinand J."FJ" and Betty (Boothroy) Lorraine Sprengel. Michael surrendered his life to the Lord on November 16, 2018. After moving with his family to Canon City in August of 1952, at the age of 5 months, Michael remained here until he graduated from Canon City High School in 1971. He later moved to Goodland, Kansas to live with his maternal grandmother. He graduated from the Northwest Kansas Area Vocational Training School with a degree in auto body repair and painting. He then went into the United States Navy for a short period of time and was honorably discharged. In 1975 Michael began work at the Eisenhower Tunnel for the Colorado Department of Transportation. He lived in Georgetown, Idaho Springs and finally Empire. While living in Empire he met and married Julie Shanklin. They had two daughters, Shannon Patricia Sprengel and Shelley Anne Sprengel. During this time, Mike was also a trailer court manager. He owned MLS enterprises, a handy man service. After retiring from CDOT, he worked for Mountain Aggrate Sand and Gravel Company as the company welder and machine oiler. He attended Red Rocks Community College in Golden, graduating with multiple certificates in

welding and metal fabrication. Mike returned to Canon City in 1997. After his return, Mike continued his handyman ways. "A jack of all trades," Mike enjoyed wood working, rebuilding his 1975 Chevy and 1968 pickups while maintaining his home and gardens. His most prized possessions were his Harley Davidson Motorcycle, and his two Jack Russel Terriers, Tanya and Riley. He always had many projects spread out in his workshop. Mike was a life member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. He loved spending his summers outdoors and worked 20 years outdoors with his friend Bill Uhland in Westcliffe. Using his many talents, Mike was a volunteer helping to rebuild antique railcars for All Aboard Westcliff. Mike is survived by his sister, Sandra Roberts; his two daughters; good friends Bill Uhland, Dean Mallory and very good neighbors Anna and Shane Randolph as well as numerous close friends and acquaintances. Cañon City to host rally as part of Small Business Revolution

If you haven’t heard what all the buzz is about downtown, you might want to consider binge watching the Small Business Revolution - Main Street series online or on Hulu. And those who want to be part of the action, there are a couple of upcoming opportunities. Because Cañon City is one of the top 10 communities in the running for Season 4 of the highly acclaimed “Small Business Revolution - Main Street” series, Cañon City will host the Small Business Revolution team and ﬁlm crews Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.

Preparation

In preparation of the visit, community members, business owners, organizations, the new owners of the Hotel St. Cloud and local students worked bright and early Sunday morning to spruce up the downtown. The cleanup took place in the 200 through 800 blocks of Main Street, from Royal Gorge Boulevard to Macon Avenue, including the alleys. Everyone was invited to help with the effort. A safety meeting began at 9 a.m. Sunday at Cañon Signature Mortgage, 715 Main St. The cleanup lasted until noon, at which time Fire It Up Pizza provided lunch. Dave and Lynda Lambert and Dan Brown spearheaded the event. Dave Lambert said the purpose behind the cleanup effort was to show pride in the community. “We won’t lose this (Small Business Revolution contest) from lack of trying,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of people ask to help. It’s been very positive.”
