St. Thomas More Hospital is offering a three-week Nursing Assistant Program beginning Oct. 14 at the Education Center in Florence. This accelerated program is a great alternative to traditional college courses that take place over the course of a semester, spanning around three months. The small class size provides an intimate learning environment with ample hands-on training. All program instructors are Registered Nurses who have extensive experience in nursing. Required class time is Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fridays are dedicated work session days. Upon completion of the program, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of common elements required for certiﬁcation by the Colorado State Board of Nursing. Students will be able to demonstrate compliance with standards of practices for NA’s and competence with all skills required for certiﬁcation. Prior to enrollment, it is required of

students to have a copy of a legally issued Colorado ID, High School Diploma or equivalent or current proof of enrollment as a Junior or Senior, clear background check, negative drug screen, immunizations (see the application for the full list), inﬂuenza vaccine for the September-December ﬂu season and a signed injury/ liability waiver. St. Thomas More Hospital invites the women of the community and their loved ones to clad themselves in pink and join STM associates for a girls’ night out Oct. 7 for the “Margaritas and Mammos” event in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Hospital representatives encourage women to bring a friend, family member or co-worker to share in the fun. The event kicks off at 4:30 p.m. at E-Free Church, 3000 E. Main St., with registration, mock margaritas and informational booths followed by a delicious dinner. Participants will then be treated to a presentation about breast cancer prevention, early detection, resources and treatment by Stephen Girard, MD, FACS, MD Anderson Cancer Network Certiﬁed Physician, a general surgeon specializing in breast care and medical director of St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center’s Breast Center of Excellence and Wendy Girard, MD, Family Medicine physician and medical director of St. Mary-Corwin’s high-risk breast clinic. No real job opportunity, including mystery shopping, involves paying for the job. — Don’t pay companies for “certiﬁcations,” directories or job “guarantees,” all of which are usually worthless. Companies asking you to pay for such things are likely scammers. — If you’re asked to deposit checks into your bank account and send money back to pay for courses, fees or anything else, stop. This is a fake check scam. When the check bounces, you’ll be out of the money you sent and may have to pay more to the bank. — Never wire money or buy gift cards for a mystery shopping assignment or any job opportunity. Those are sure signs of a scam.

Photos of local historical people, places and events are being shared in public spaces and businesses thanks to the initiative of Cindy Smith, a member of the Fremont County Historical Society. Smith got the idea when she was doing some paleontology work at the Denver Museum and saw a photo on the wall of Cañon Cityite Dall DeWeese and his family digging in the dirt while wearing their “Sunday best.” “I thought, ‘these need to be in Cañon City,’” Smith said. Smith wanted to look beyond paleontology and explore ideas for photos that would be welcomed by prospective businesses and municipalities, as well. “It made sense to spread out our legacy that we’ve got that is so rich,” she said. Smith has a notebook with photo ideas that she takes into businesses to see if they would be interested in having one or more printed on canvas or foam backing to hang in their establishments. She does all the leg work, and the buyer just pays for the cost of the print. “So far there has been very high interest,” she said. The Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience, the Burea of Land Management and Valley-Wide Health Systems have prints
