Ralph Carestia

August 17, 1928 ~ June 9, 2019 Ralph Carestia, of Florence, CO passed away June 9, 2019 at St. Thomas More Hospital, at the age of 90. A lifelong resident of Fremont County, Ralph had lived at Skyline Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Cañon City for the past 16 months. Born in Williamsburg, CO on August 17, 1928, Ralph was the son of Italian immigrants and the fifth of eight children. His work ethic was instilled at an early age when, at age seven, he began working in the coal mine with his dad; early mornings that began at 4 a.m. in the winter season. When his father died ten year later, Ralph was the eldest child at home and he met responsibility head-on to help support his family. He began his business with the purchase of a single axle dump truck in 1947, and would eventually grow Carestia Trucking into an 8-truck company, including a gravel pit, asphalt company, construction crew, and truck and equipment repair shop. Ralph married Mary Nitchen in 1950, and they were blessed with two children, Ralph "Ralphie" and Karen. They lived in Rockvale, where Ralph was also a volunteer firefighter. They moved to Florence in 1979 and Mary passed away in January, 1980. Ralph married Darlene Gleiforst in December, 1982. He "kept on trucking" until he sold his business in 1995. Ralph liked to be busy; he enjoyed tinkering in his shop, making or building things and restoring

cars, including a 1923 Model T Roadster he bought on the spot when he saw it dead, dented and rusty, parked behind a couple of hay stacks. He also liked hunting and fishing. Ralph was well known in the community; he was a member of the Elks Club, and he and Darlene were crowned as Florence's Pioneer Day King and Queen in 2009. Ralph is survived by his wife, Darlene Carestia; his son, Ralph "Ralphie" (Betty)Carestia and his daughter, Karen(Carey) Horton; step-daughters, Karle (Leon) Murray, Patricia Gleiforst, Luanne(Kenny) Lonberger; four granddaughters, Kathryn Hazard, Kelly Franson, Mary Muniga and Kim Smith; three great-grandchildren; and siblings, Tony Carestia, Antoinette Madone and Clara Giuliano. Ralph was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Carestia; his sisters Nancy, Marie, Rose and brother, Dominic "Dom." Rosary & Vigil Service, 9:30 a.m. Friday June 14, 2019, Funeral Mass, 10:00 a.m., St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Florence followed by interment at Lakeside Cemetery in Canon City to be followed by a reception in the Parish Center. Mary Pauline DeVor January 31, 1934 - May 22, 2019

Mary Pauline DeVor, 85, went home on May 22, 2019 in Ca ñ on City. She was born January 31, 1934 to J W and Maggie (Whatley) Lee in Texas and was raised in Pueblo. She married Ed DeVor on October 2, 1950. They had four children then moved to Penrose, Colorado in 1957, where they added four more children to their brood and enjoyed life. Her creativity and entrepreneurial spirit showed throughout her many endeavors. She had a wanderlust that kept her family in adventure, while also providing an inviting home full of good food, family, friends, and neighbors. She taught those she cared for many things, chief among them was love, family bonds, and resiliency. She leaves an amazing legacy and

is loved and missed. She is survived by her children, Mary Youngblood; Margie Wyatt; Susie (Ronnie) Brickman; Billy (Rhonda) DeVor; Peggy (Tim) Grisham; daughter-in-law, Diane DeVor; son-in-law, Mark Doutt; sister, Sandra (John) Johnson; brother, Fred (Loura) Lee; sister-in-law, Jeannie DeVor; and a great number of grand, great-grand, and great-greatgrandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. Pauline was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ed DeVor; brother, Jerry Lee; brother-in-law, Chuck DeVor; son, Shorty DeVor; daughters, Alice DeVor and Patti DeVor. James Noel Mollenkopf May 26, 1938 ~ June 11, 2019

James Noel Mollenkopf, age 81, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2019 after losing his battle with Lymphoma. Born in Wenatchee, WA in 1938 weighing only 2lbs and 12oz @ 15" long, his life expectancy was 20-30 years old. He celebrated his 81 st birthday in May. Known by most as Trader Jim, he traded anything with anyone for most of his life, he told dirty jokes, belched and farted at the most inappropriate times, had a contagious laugh, he hated computers and cell phones, had no use for big cities, would do just about anything for anyone no matter how

well he knew them, and made us all laugh. Most of his life he worked as a laborer hauling bricks to build houses, mowing lawns, painting houses, and being a handy man. He is survived by his younger sister Mary Ann Baker, nephews Mike and Steve Donovan, niece Janae Brown, and loved having 2 great-nieces, 1 great-nephew, 4 great-great-nieces and 4 great-great-nephews. Surrounded by numerous life long friends as he lived in the small town of Florence, CO he was a quite a character and will be greatly missed.

Francisco (Frank) Rudolpho Wilson Francisco (Frank) Rudolpho Wilson lost his courageous battle against cancer on May 30, 2019, in Littleton, Colo. at the home of his eldest daughter, Athena Wilson. Frank was preceded in his death by his father and mother, Tomas and Barbara Wilson; brothers, Thomas Wilson and Charlie Wilson; and sister, Sadie Wilson. He is survived by his siblings, Beatrice Ornelas, Johnny (Sue) Wilson, Sara Herrera, Joe Wilson, Delia (Abraham) Real, Mary Gallegos, Steve (Toni) Wilson; his children, Athena Wilson, Lani (Ray) Puga, Paul (Ann) Wilson, Francisco Wilson, and Cassiddee Wilson. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Those of us close to Frank recognize that he had the heart of an entertainer. When he wasn't playing his guitar and singing, he could still be found being the life of the party. He loved to make us laugh and constantly surrounded himself with

friends and family. His passions included fishing, playing horseshoes, working on his car, and watching the Denver Broncos. He had a special way with the young children of our family - they absolutely adored him, as he adored them. Frank was a highly skilled bricklayer. Driving around the entirety of the Front Range and into the mountains of Colorado, you can see many structures he helped build. In fact, he was part of the crew that built Coors Field, and you can find his name on a special contributors plaque located inside the ballpark near the Rockpile. Services will be held at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 2190 S. Sheridan Blvd, Denver, Colo. 80219, on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at 12:00PM. Marvin Dornhecker Sr. August 4, 1933 ~ June 1, 2019

Marvin Dornhecker Sr., 85, passed away in his home in Canon City, CO on June 1, 2019. He was born in Blue Island, Illinois to Harry and Esther (Neibert) Dornhecker. Marv was born and raised on the "southside" of Chicago. He worked as a butcher at the A & P. He married the love of his life Barbara Jean Erickson on May 21, 1960 in Blue Island, Illinois. They then moved to Lewiston, Michigan where they owned a grocery store and Marv continued to butcher. They moved to Canon City, Colorado in 1976 and Marv retired from the Department of Corrections after 23 years. Marv was an avid softball player starting at age 9 through age 70. He was proud to still be playing with the "young guys" and finally hung up his glove at 70 sneaking in "one more game". He is survived by his daughter, Dawn (Kurt)

McDermott, sons, Marv Dornhecker Jr., and Ron (Marcia) Dornhecker; grandchildren, Cody Dornhecker, Lauryn (Chuck) Koenig, Zach (Stephanie) Cutter, and Caitlin Dageforde; sibling, Vernie Zager; great-grandchildren, Tilten Cutter, Tinley Cutter, Nick Wilson, Beaux Koenig, Brock Koenig and great-granddaughter on the way Berkley Koenig; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Cañon City School Board awards licensed, classified staff with raises Chris Graham The Daily Record

During Monday’s meeting, the Cañon City School District’s board of education approved two bargaining agreements that award experience steps along with a host of other benefits to licensed, support and classified staff. For licensed staff, they were awarded an experience step and an increase to the monthly medical contribution to cover the premium of the base medical plan. For support and classified staff, they were awarded instructional support. Food services salary schedules were changed to account for the increase in the minimum wage, an increase to the monthly medical contribution to cover the premium of the base medical plan similar to the licensed staff and an experience step for those whose pay was not affected by the rise in the minimum wage. Also, there is a guarantee that each employee’s salary does not decrease because of the decrease in the number of work days and two more holidays to be added to 12-month employees. The school board has an increase of more than $1 million for the upcoming school year.

The budget has a gross increase of $1.9 million in total program funding that gets trimmed down to a little more than $1 million with increased costs in other expenses. The biggest expense increase in the budget is at $433,967 for staff salaries from $28.4 million in 2018-2019 to $29.3 million in 20192020. Major reasons for the increase in revenue is the school finance formula funding as CCSD’s per-pupil revenue increased by $335 from $7,716 to $8,477, increased funding of full-day kindergarten and the buy-down of the budget stabilization factor. “The state legislature treated us well,” Superintendent George Welsh said at a previous meeting. Middle school students also will get an updated curriculum as the board also approved new English Language Arts and science curriculum. Both programs are teacher recommended that work with the Chromebooks and for ELA ‘My Perspective’ will be used and for science ‘STEMScopes’ will be used. The board also will continue its membership in the Colorado Association of School Boards by paying the cost of membership renewal of $12,936.

Anna C. Richardson Swihart July 10, 1923 ~ May 23, 2019

Anna C. Richardson Swihart, Cañon City's first woman to be named Realtor of the Year (1987) was welcomed into Heaven on May 23, 2019. She was born in Harrah, OK in 1923: the first child born to PE and Gladys Carpenter. Anna Lilac was the first person in her family to be a valedictorian. She was Harrah High School's Valedictorian of 1941 and delivered a speech full of hope and, with Pearl Harbor still fresh in their minds, recognized the "revolution taking place around us". As a fresh graduate from Hills Business University in Oklahoma City, she took the train to Wash DC and began working for the new Social Security Office. Another first is that she paid her first income tax bill by depleting the savings account she had since childhood! Anna transferred to Kansas City, joined the USO Girls' Choral Club, and met her husband, the late Deal Richardson of Cañon City. They married in 1944 and moved to Colorado. She spent her life as a devoted mother to eight children ensuring them of a loving home with solid spiritual values, whether in Buena Vista or Cañon City. When her first marriage ended and her children were raised, Anna embarked on a new career in real estate. By 1978, she had received the Educational Achievement in Real Estate award, earned her broker license, and was serving as second vice-president of the Business and Professional Women's Club. A year later, she opened her own real estate office in Cañon City: Anna Realty, Your Bridge Between Homes. Anna was a charter member and past president of the Toastmistress Club of Cañon City. In 1983, she was named Cañon City's Business Woman of the Year. George Swihart came into Anna's life, and they were married in 1987. They enjoyed traveling until his death in 1994, including a memorable trip to Hawaii. Never one to slow down, Anna moved to Salida where she was

co-owner and hostess of a bed and breakfast for ten years. She returned to Cañon City in 2010. In addition to playing the piano, Anna found relaxation in painting, gardening, sewing, and reading, including a daily dose from her Bible. A member of the First United Methodist Church, Anna served as a trustee, was in the hand bell choir, loaded her van with friends to attend women's retreats, and joined other women in making quilts to be given away. She was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels, performed at nursing homes with the Red Bowtie Band, and took up line dancing with a group that march-danced in local parades. She is survived by her children, Arthur (Honey), Deanna (Bill), Candice Richardson, and Gayle Harp of Cañon City, Omar (Anne) Richardson of Grand Junction, Dan (Marsha) Richardson of Texas, and Cheryl (Don) Monaghan of Washington. She was preceded in death by her brother, Gene Carpenter (Florida); sister, Crystal Merritt (Oklahoma); and her eldest son, Weldon. Anna was dearly loved and will be sorely missed by her children, friends, numerous nieces and nephews, her cousins, Echo Lipe and Peggy Gervais, 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-greatgrandchildren. Anna's favorite saying was, "You have to get up early if you are going to have any fun!" Her deepest wish is for people to accept Christ as their Savior. May we all continue to follow her shining example and think of others first. St. Michael Catholic Church to host annual St. Anthony Festival celebration Carie Canterbury The Daily Record St. Michael Catholic Church will host its second annual St. Anthony Festival celebration at 9 a.m. June 23 at 1029 College Ave. The event includes mass, followed by a procession of the Blessed Sacrament and statues of saints while praying the rosary. A spaghetti dinner prepared by the Sons of Italy will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost for the dinner is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-12, and free for children younger than 5. Wine, tea, coffee and dessert are complimentary. Chance baskets and family activities will be in the

Parish Center, as well as a silent auction. Dinner tickets are for sale at the church office and will be available at the door. Everyone is invited. Proceeds will benefit the parish Activity Fund. The parish at the historic St. Anthony’s Church in Brookside conducted an annual St. Anthony processional for several years before the church closed in the 1980s. A group of parishioners from St. Michael Church wanted to bring the tradition back, with more than 200 people attending last year’s inaugural event. Rich Eurich of Pueblo once again will play the accordion during the event. Attendees are invited to bring

dessert items (especially Italian desserts) for the meal and bouquets of flowers for the procession. Jim Cain, one of the event organizers, said last year’s event featured portions of the mass, songs and readings in Italian. St. Anthony of Padua is the Patron of Lost Things. The official St. Anthony of Padua is June 13. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, St. Anthony typically is depicted with a book and the Infant Child Jesus and is commonly referred to today as the “finder of lost articles.” For more information on the St. Anthony celebration, call Cain at 719-431-3509.

CDOT to close parts of U.S. 50 The Colorado Department of Transportation recently began work on U.S. 50 in west Fremont County. Crews will be installing slow vehicle turnout lanes both eastbound and westbound. Crews also will be installing passing lanes both eastbound and westbound. Additionally, crews will be making drainage improvements, guardrail improvements, as well as fencing improvements. This project was contracted to A&S Construction for $4.173 million. This project is part of CDOT’s

“Whole System. Whole Safety.” initiative aimed at enhancing safety for Colorado’s traveling public. The construction of the slow vehicle turnout will provide space for slower vehicles to pull safely off the traveling lane, while the additional passing lanes will offer opportunities for faster vehicles to safely pass slower moving traffic. Drivers can expect 24-hour width restrictions (10 feet), speed reductions to 40 mph, shoulder closures, lane closures, and traffic delays. Partial closures of U.S. 50 will be in

effect between and October. Work will take place between mile points 232.3 and 237.4 during daylight hours Monday through Friday. Motorists should expect 24-hour width restrictions of 10 feet. Motorists should also expect delays during the scheduled work hours. Night work and weekend work are not anticipated at this time. Work is expected to be completed by October, barring weather and/or shipment delays. Speed reductions will be in place of 40 mph during working hours.
