Bull (Richard Charles) Brassea April 10, 1959 ~ February 6, 2019

Our beloved Bull lost his courageous battle with thyroid cancer on February 6. Born April 10, 1959 in Florence, CO as Richard Charles, he was given the nickname Bull early on and it is what most people knew him by. Bull attended Florence schools and at the age of 13, began his work at Wolfe Trucking where owner George Wolfe saw a potential in him and taught him to drive trucks and operate heavy equipment. This became Bull's life-long career. Even while in the Army, Bull drove tanks and worked on heavy equipment. Bull began working for Ary Brothers Trucking in 1988 and continued to work there until his passing. He loved his job and the people he worked for and with. Even when no one thought he could continue, Bull still went to work and did his job and a little bit more. Bull's favorite things included his mother, his chilcren, his grandchildren, a chew in his lower lip, hot sauces including his beloved habanero peppers, his Sunday

lasagna dinners prepared by him using his own special recipe, his truck cleaned and shined up, knives and guns. Everyone who knew him enjoyed Bull's dry sense of humor which lasted until his passing. On July 9, 1991 Bull married the love of his life, Sharon L. Staton. She survives as do his children: Amber (Charles Farris III) Phillips, Autumn (Jonathan Hill) Brassea, John (Chelsea) Brassea;stepchildren Kimmy (Jeff) Perry, Brianne (Josh) Brookes; sisters Doreen Webb, Edris (Terry Ostrander) Smith, Gayle Trzaskowski, Mary Edmondson; numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, great-nephews and nieces, 21 grandchildren, and friends too numerous to count. Bull was predeceased by his parents John C and Carol Brassea; sister Wendy Nugent; and his paternal and maternal grandparents. A celebration of life is being planned for a later time. Services under the care of Wilson Mortuary.

Eleanor Knopp

October 15, 1913 ~ February 4, 2019 Eleanor Knopp, age 105, passed away at her home February 4, 2019. She was a lifetime resident of Canon City, Colorado, were she taught for 36 years. Eleanor was born October 15, 1913 to Fred and Clara (Smaller) Hammel in Canon City, Colorado. She married her first husband George Martin who was a WWII casualty on March 1, 1945. Five years later she would marry Harlan Knopp and together they would raise Gary Martin, her son. She always felt education was important and earned her degree in Home Economics often dropping out of school to earn enough money to pay for her schooling. After receiving her degree, she taught at Canon City High School, where she herself graduated in 1933. After retiring in the 1960s she traveled all over North America and saw many of the sights both here and in Canada. She was a member of the PEO AC Chapter and extremely involved at her church,

United Presbyterian Church. She credits her healthy lifestyle and the love of her family and God for her long life. She was quoted to say "I loved my church. I loved my family and I loved my job. Whatever I was doing, I was happy." She is survived by her son, Gary (Georgia) Martin; grandsons, Richard (Debbie) Martin, Nolan (Nicole) Martin; granddaughter, Julia (Jeff) Schmidt; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Elsie Martin. She was preceded in death by her husbands George Martin, Harlan Knopp; and brothers, Fred and Harold Hammel. A memorial service will be held in her honor 11:00 a.m. Saturday February 9, 2019 at Wilson Funeral Home, 1449 S. 9th Street Canon City, Colorado 81212. Reception to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to Fremont Hospice, 1439 Main Street, Canon City, CO 81212. Services have been entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home.

November 18, 1930 - February 6, 2019 Born Nov. 18, 1930 in Canon City to John and Katheryn (Demicell) Starika. Died Feb. 6, 2019. Survived by son, Larry Haynes and wife, Faith; daughters, Diana (Ray) Long and Lori Tedesko; grandchildren, Jason Gordon, Amber Gordon, Wayne, Shawn and Kelly Tedesko and Crystal Drawdy; seven great-grandchildren;

sisters, Agnes Hall, Betty Hendrix, Sue Starika; brothers, James and Kenneth Starika. Preceded in death by husband, Leonard; son, Terry Leon; parents; brothers, John and Edward; sisters, Madeline Star Starika and Kathryn Starika. There will be no services held. Body has been donated to Science Care.

Louis Carlos Cortez March 26, 1928 ~ February 8, 2019

Louis Carlos Cortez, 90, affectionately known as "Wedo", passed into eternal joy on February 8, 2019. He was born in Aguilar, CO on March 26, 1928 to Trinidad and Sylviana Cortez. He was the second born of four children. At the age of eight his mother died and he and his siblings were raised by his maternal grandmother. He moved to Florence, CO when he was a teenager and enlisted in the Army Air Corp at age 17 where he served four years and was honorably discharged. In 1948 he met his wife whom he married in 1951 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Florence CO. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on Oct. 27, 2018. After marrying his wife they raised their five children in Florence CO. He worked at CF&I Steel in Pueblo, CO where he retired after 35 years and continued to work for many years after. His favorite past times were, spending time with his family and friends, crossword puzzles, playing cribbage/cards and working on cars; He loved telling jokes with his quick-witted humor. He is survived by his loving wife Lupie (Ayala) Cortez; five children who cherished him immensely: Simon (Linda) Cortez, Chrisanna (Curt) Nagle,

Monica (Rob) Luedeke, David (Kara) Cortez, and Leon Cortez; Eighteen grandchildren: Carlos, whom he selflessly raised, (Danaka), Justin (Nicole), Steven, Sammy, Andrew, Aaron, Austin, Louis, Monica, Cortney (Anthony), Brianna (Joshua), Brandon, Brittany, Jessie and 8 great grandchildren: Cali, Sylviana, Lenaya, Alexis, Brooklyn, Jayden, Josiah, Cameron; and brother Ralph (Sylvia) Cortez. Through death he was reunited with his parents, his Sister Josephine Cordova, brother, Gilbert Cortez, and best friend Leo Cordova and numerous other family members. Wedo was a kind, humble and genuine man deeply adored by many nieces nephews, in-laws and friends. He will be loved and missed immensely. Forever! The viewing will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Florence Mortuary in Florence, CO from 5 to 7 PM. Services will be held at St. Benedict's Church in Florence on Friday, February 15, 2019. Gary George Martin June 12, 1944 ~ February 9, 2019

Gary Martin, age 74, quietly passed away in his home on February 9, 2019. Gary was born in Cañon City, Colorado on June 12, 1944 to George and Eleanor (Hammel) Martin. A lifelong resident of Canon City, he graduated from Cañon City High School in 1962. During his school years, he gained a love of ranching while working for Nate Patton. After high school, Gary moved to Ft. Collins to study forestry. In 1965, he married Georgia Gribble from Hartsel, Colorado; daughter of George and Clydia (Raybell) Gribble. Gary went to work for the Cotter Corporation where he was employed as a laboratory chemist for 12 years. Because of his love of ranching and animals, in 1978 Gary relocated his family of five to the Nate Patton Ranch where he worked for the next 37 years. Gary loved all aspects of both commercial and registered herd ranching; from putting up hay and fixing fence, to calving season and keeping a purebred herd pure. Gary always had an eye for just the right bull. Gary savored the great outdoors where he loved to team rope, hunt, fish, camp, and search for arrowheads. Gary raised his family in the ranching ways and was a good friend, as well as neighbor, to

many. All who were close to him understood his internal echo: "I am who I am". However, it was the animals under his care which seemed to know his unique spirit best "Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened" -Anatole France. Gary was a rancher who knew every cow. Gary is survived by his wife Georgia; children, Richard (Debbie) Martin, Julia (Jeff) Schmidt, Nolan (Nicole) Martin; six grandchildren; as well as his aunt Elsie Martin. He was preceded in death by his father George Martin, a casualty of WWII; step father Harlan Knopp and mother, Eleanor Knopp, all from Cañon City. A memorial service officiated by both Mike Shields, Jr. and Sr. from Westcliffe will be held in Gary's honor at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, Feb. 15th, at Wilson Funeral Home, 1449 South 9th Street, Cañon City, Colorado 81212. Clarence "Clay" Bridges September 16, 1942 - February 5, 2019

Clarence "Clay" Bridges, born Sept. 16, 1942 in Enid, Oklahoma to William and Katherine Bridges passed away on Feb. 5, 2019. Clay is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Max Bridges; and sister, Carolyn Bridges. Clay was known for his humor and kind heart as well as his beloved OU Sooners and United States Marine Corps. Clay is survived by his wife, Cheryl Bridges; children, Todd (Jennifer) Bridges, Scott (Fiona) Bridges, and Lisa Bridges; grandchildren,

Kristopher Bridges, Erika Bridges, Lexie Hackworth, Leasha Hackworth and Mikey Bridges; and great grandchildren, Ella Bridges, and Rhyan Bridges. Clay spent his career in Canon City, CO as a Wildlife Biologist working for the BLM until he retired in 1998. There will be a private graveside service for immediate family members. Samuel Ethan Babcock November 10, 1973 ~ January 30, 2019

Samuel Ethan babcock, 45 of Canon City, CO was born on November 10, 1973 to Dennis and Sandra (Crowley) Babcock. He fought a long hard fight with Huntington's Chorea Disease. He past away on January 30, 2019. Sam graduated with the class of 1993 from Canon City High School. In his lifetime he worked at K-Bob's and City Market before enlisting n the US Navy. While he was active duty he was stationed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (1994-1996). When he returned home, he worked at City Market and was in the US Navy Reserves. Sam left City Market for a career in the US Federal Bureau of Prisons (USP) in Florence, CO; until his medical retirement. In Sam's lifetime his greatest love was his children: Armand Lovato, Brittany, Kelsey, Isaiah, and Aaron Babcock. He was so proud to have his grandson, Samuel Ivan Lovato. Sam's favorite place to be besides with family was in the outdoors. He enjoyed spending time with kids, fishing, hunting,camping,hiking, 4 wheeling, sledding and mudding. He was loved by any and everyone who met him and always had a smile on his face. Making memories and having fun with his children

January 31, 1935 ~ February 5, 2019 Trudy Mae Hoskins, 84, of Canon City, CO, was called home to our Lord and Savior on February 5, 2019. Trudy was born January 31, 1935, in East Orange, NJ, the daughter of John Hulick Conover and Jancina "Janet" Kjargaard. On June 21, 1953, she married Robert Policky in Omaha, NE sharing nineteen adventure filled years raising three boys until Robert's passing in 1972. On June 14, 1983, God blessed her with a fantastic soul mate when she married Charlie Hoskins in St. Onge, SD. Trudy had a passion for keeping a nice home, antiquing, traveling, and partnering with Charlie in their sales career. She had an insistent yet loving spirit. Trudy absolutely cherished her children and grandchildren spending endless hours enjoying their many activities serving as a phenomenal cheerleader. She was selflessly devoted to her family listening empathically to their concerns, their dreams, and encouraging them to reach their fullest potential. She put thousands and thousands of miles on Jeep Wagoneers taking her boys to alpine skiing events throughout the Rockies. She was an avid athlete

in her youth playing on the HS tennis team. She loved the outdoors, especially water skiing and family time on the lake. To know her was to love her. Trudy is survived by her husband, Charlie; children - Brian (Carol) Policky and Greg (Deonne) Policky; grandchildren - Sarah (Gavin) Taylor, Eric Policky, Katie (Kent) Buhr, Heather (Cole) Hord, Brandon Policky, and Lauren (Shane) Baldauf; great-grandchildren Emma, Carson, Ellie, Colby, Tucker, and Paxton. Trudy's eldest son Bruce Policky preceded her in death. Pueblo Community College Fremont Campus gets new biology and nursing labs By Chris Graham The Daily Record What started as a request for a new microscope turned into a $1 million donation to help support the biology and nursing labs for Pueblo Community College - Fremont Campus. Longtime donor Walter Schepp recalls a conversation with former PCC Fremont Campus Dean Lana Carter where she asked for a new microscope. Schepp offered to help and that turned into much more than a microscope. “Well, I could probably help you out on that, little did I know it would be a government job,” Schepp said. In a project that started in mid-November, both the nursing and biology labs were renovated and received new equipment, storage rooms and teaching stations. “Here at PCC, we are committed to educating and equipping a workforce that is ready and able to serve our wider community,” PCC Fremont Campus Dean Linda Stetter said. “It is critical that we have the most current facilities, educational technology and

passionate instructors.” The new teaching stations include two flat screen TVs at the front of the classroom along with computers. New equipment includes new beds, mannequins and nursing equipment for the nursing lab. For the biology lab, the equipment includes new microscopes. “Words can’t explain the difference that these renovations have made in the quality of our education,” first-year nursing student Dominic Hernandez said. “What was once an old outdated lab has been reborn into an environment a nursing students dreams of walking into each day to learn.” Renovations to the nursing lab were highlighted by the breaking down of a wall that separated the nursing lab into two rooms. The change allows all nursing students to fit in one classroom. This previous separation forced PCC to have two classes to accommodate the 30 students, but with one big room, only one class will be needed. “Providing instruction once rather than twice for each activity will allow us to devote considerably

Renovations to the biology lab include new cabinets, chairs and a new

chemical shower. Electrical outlets were added to the tops of tables to allow students easier access to charge different devices as the outlets were previously underneath the tables. All the walls in the biology

lab were painted and new ceiling tiles were put in. Schepp’s contribution also will fund a full-time biology instructor and simulation technology coordinator each for two years.

“What we have done, what we tried to do, in our helping out Canon City is to primarily concentrate on organizations that were working really hard to help themselves,” Schepp said.
