Travis Wayne Cecil

September 7, 1961 - March 29, 2019

Travis Wayne Cecil passed away unexpectedly on Friday March 29, 2019. He was 57. Travis was born in Pratt, Kansas on September 7, 1961 to Mona (Burns) and Lester Cecil. He developed an especially close relationship with his grandmother, Blanche Burns, after she moved in to help raise him and his older siblings upon the sudden passing of their dad when Travis was only nine months old. She instilled in him a love of fishing and sports which he carried throughout his life. The family relocated to Canon City, Colorado when Travis was seven. He completed his schooling in Canon City, graduating from CCHS in 1979. He soon began a career in the coal mining industry, working at several mines throughout Colorado over his 30 plus year career. His last mining job took him and his family to Paonia, where they still reside. When the mine closed several years ago, Travis landed his "dream job" of being a Ditchrider for the Fire Mountain Canal & Reservoir Company. He cherished being in the outdoors and enjoyed sharing pictures from his "office window." He also drove the school bus for his local school district and loved being around the kids. Travis loved being in the outdoors, and doing anything in the mountains, especially fishing, camping and boating. He was also a major Colorado Sports fan, often wearing the colors of whatever pro sporting season it happened to be, and he never missed an episode of Jeopardy! Following the love and appreciation for his large family, his number one passion was music. He loved listening to, writing, and playing most genres. He learned

guitar in high school, and until his death continued to play at every opportunity. It was a family favorite for Travis to bring his guitar to all get-togethers in order to lead them in "jam sessions." Travis's love for music will carry on through generations due to the special gift he instilled in his children, siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, etc. The Beatles were a favorite, and he never passed up an opportunity to play "Eight Days a Week." Travis is survived by his wife, Apryll, children Ashley, Chase, Conner, Raymond and Kaitlyn Jordan (KJ) and grandchildren Jacee and Brody. Other survivors include his mother, Mona Patrick, mother-in-law Barbara Klein, siblings Debbie (Joe) Peter, Linda (Dan) Slater, Lester (Sue) Cecil, Berneita (Dave) Stiefel, Johnny Walden, Laurie Yekovich, Joe (Karen) Patrick, Roger (Jamie) Patrick, Linda Sue Coke, Bob (Michelle) Yekovich, and Connie Yekovich, sister-in-law Brenda (Scott) Carey, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins with whom Travis had developed many special relationships. He was preceded in death by his father, Lester Cecil; step-dads Frank Yekovich and Jesse Patrick; his grandmother Blanche Burns; and brothers Kenneth Jerome (KJ) Yekovich, Keith Yekovich, and Rick Yekovich. A Celebration of Life party will be held in Canon City at 3:00 pm on Saturday, April 13; it will be at the Waffle Wagon, 1310 Royal Gorge Blvd. The family requests dressing in colors or clothing representing one of the Colorado professional athletic teams in honor of Travis and his enthusiasm for them.

The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park is offering half-price season passes for Fremont County Residents during the month of April only. Passes are good for one year from the date of purchase and includes unlimited visits. Sponsor partner Bank of the San Juans is offering a roundup purchase promotion to aid the Boys and Girls Club of Fremont County. During the half-price promotion, a regularly-priced Adult season pass of $60 will be $30 for residents, a Child pass, regularly $50 will be $25, and a Family Pass for 4, regularly $190 will be $95. Renovation begins at Cañon City Middle School By Chris Graham The Daily Record

A groundbreaking ceremony Friday kicked off the construction and renovation of Cañon City Middle School. “It’s time to move forward, we can’t look back now, we must say goodbye to the past and welcome the future,” said CCMS student council president Brooke Watley. “We’re not closing the book on the history of this school, we will be turning to the next chapter.” CCMS students and staff watched as school board president Larry Oddo and members of the Colorado state land board explained the process for getting the Building Excellent Schools Today grant and how the BEST program works. The Cañon City School District received the BEST grant in May 2018 with the CCMS grant worth a total of $32.8 million. The grant itself is $24.8 million from the state and the remaining $8 million will come from local property tax increases. The plans for CCMS include the demolition of parts of the school and the grounds facility, the renovation of the 1925 historic core and the gymnasium and the construction of new instructional space. “We think what is getting built here will be the perfect blend of old and new, a nod to history and future focus,” said Oddo. The west parking lot demolition is expected to take place in early April along with a new commons, 8th-grade wing, and life-skills classrooms. Two weeks ago demolition took place on the old CCMS home economics classroom. It is being gutted to make space for the mechanical equipment that will operate the facility through the various

Built in 1925, CCMS originally served as Cañon City’s high school. Decades later, the school saw changes, both in the student body it served and in the school building itself. After Cañon City High

School was built in the 1960s, CCMS began serving junior high students. In the 1970s and 1980s, the district expanded on the school, by building new wings and a gym. Ofﬁcials said the middle school has

FCDPHE is working with state and local partners to vaccinate those who may have been exposed or are at high risk of exposure during this outbreak. Hepatitis A virus is a liver infection that can be prevented with a safe, effective vaccine. It is highly contagious and can cause liver disease lasting a few weeks to a serious illness lasting months. Rarely, it causes death. Hepatitis A usually spreads when a person unknowingly ingests the virus from objects, food or drinks that are contaminated by small, undetected amounts of stool from an infected person. It also spreads through close personal contact with an infected person, such as through sex or caring for someone who is ill. Persons at high risk of exposure to hepatitis A in this outbreak include: — People who are transient or experiencing homelessness. — People who use injection and noninjection street drugs. — People who live with or have sex with someone who has hepatitis

In addition to getting vaccinated, people should: — Wash hands with soap and water after going to the bathroom and before eating or making food. — Avoid having sex with anyone who has hepatitis A. — Not share towels, toothbrushes, eating utensils, food, drinks, smokes or drug “works” with others. Symptoms of hepatitis A include yellow skin and eyes, fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine and light-colored stools. Symptoms develop between two to six weeks after an exposure, and people can spread the virus to others before symptoms appear. In an effort to reduce excavation damage, Atmos Energy and Common Ground Alliance urge contractors, landscapers, homeowners and the public to call 811 before any digging starts, as required by law. “It is the law in Colorado to call 811 before digging to have underground utility lines marked,” said Kurtis Paradisa, Atmos Energy Manager of Public Affairs. “Calling 811 helps prevent service outages, serious injuries and costly repairs and is critical to keeping the public and utility lines safe.” Before any excavation or home improvement project like landscaping or planting trees and shrubs, call 811 at least three business days before you want to dig.
