Once the focal point of meetings with governors, financial managers, politicians and business leaders, the Peabody Mansion continues to be a hub of activity in downtown Cañon City. Built in the 1880s for James Clelland, the Victorian house set on a quiet, residential, tree-lined lane known as River Street, now Royal Gorge Boulevard. In 1875, James H. Peabody moved to Cañon City and married Clelland’s daughter. They were given the Peabody Mansion as a wedding present. Peabody was elected to a two-year term as governor while Frances Lillian Clelland Peabody took over the duties First Lady of Colorado. When Peabody died at age 65 in 1917, Mrs. Peabody sold the home, which served many different purposes until purchased by Darryl Biggerstaff in 1988. Biggerstaff later sold it to Cañon City as part of a downtown revitalization and urban renewal effort, known as the River Station Project. The Cañon City Chamber of Commerce took over its operation and purchased the building from Cañon City. As part of its use, the chamber has become a focal point for tourists coming into town, as well as businesses joining the organization. The Chamber now sees an opportunity to grow and relocate to another property. The Chamber’s board of directors will review offers on this wonderful and historic property. David Kevin Croker July 2, 1966 - November 13, 2018

David Kevin Croker, age 52, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away November 13, 2018, after a four-year battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at Village Seven Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs, on November 30, 2018 at 2 PM. David was born in Cañon City, Colorado, on July 2, 1966. His parents are Janet Kandrak Reither from Cañon City and the late Kevin "Aussie" Croker from Melbourne, Australia. He is a graduate of Denver East High School in Denver, Colorado, and of Colorado State University at Fort Collins, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Science, with an emphasis on physiology. David enjoyed his work as a white water raft guide on the Arkansas and Colorado Rivers, his stint at teaching in Murrieta, CA, and his career with the State of Colorado. An outdoor enthusiast, he was an avid cyclist and spent much of his time riding the roads and mountain passes in Colorado. He was also a mountaineer and climbed many of the state's most challenging

14,000-foot peaks. A lifelong learner, he enjoyed studying Reformed Christian theology, defending his faith through apologetics and polemics. He was a member of Village Seven Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs. He is survived by his wife, Ginia Hairston Croker of Colorado Springs and formerly of Columbus, Mississippi; his mother, Janet Reither; his sister, Tonnya (Tom)Redmond and niece Holly Redmond of Durango, Colorado; his aunt Carol- Ann Croker of Melbourne, Australia; his aunt Terye Kandrak of Colorado Springs; his step-sister Amanda (Jeremy) Geidel of Seward, NE; his step-brother Eric Reither of Logan, Utah; and numerous cousins. Survivors also include parents-in-law Nick and Eleanor Hairston of Columbus, Mississippi; and brother-in-law Trip Hairston and his wife, Dr. Bethany Hairston, and their children Anna Reed, Nicholas and Jack Hairston, all of Columbus. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Springs Rescue Mission, 5 W. Las Vegas St., Colorado Springs, CO 80903.

Robert H. Pendarvis

February 8, 1930 - November 14, 2018 Robert H. Pendarvis of Canon City, Colorado was born February 8, 1930 in Cheyenne, Wyoming to Lemuel Pendarvis and Verda (Baggs) Pendarvis and passed away on November 14, 2018. After graduating from Cheyenne High School, he began work with Mountain Bell Telephone Company and had 28 years of service when he retired and moved to Canon City, Colorado in 1976. Bob married Ada Schulze Koch on June 8, 1986 in Canon City, Colorado. He was a veteran of the Korean War, a member of Cheyenne Lodge #1 A.F. & A.M., a 32 degree member of Wyoming Consistory, benefactor and member of the N.R.A. and St. John Lutheran Church. Bob loved to hunt, fish, and spend time at his cabin in Keystone, Wyoming.

He is survived by his wife; children, Bruce (Lynn) Koch, Marsha (Tom) Wilcox, and Carolyn (Jeff) Letofsky, 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one great grandson. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00PM Tuesday, November 20th, 2018 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 790 Greydene Ave, Cañon City, CO 81212. Burial will take place with a masonic and military graveside at Lakeside Cemetery, 1008 Elm Ave, Cañon City, CO 81212. Robert Raymond Matz April 2, 1939 - November 13, 2018

Bob was born at home on 14th Street, in Cañon City, CO to Ila "Firkins" and Emil "Ray" Matz. He went to Cañon City schools, graduating from Cañon City High School, class of '57. After graduation, he went to work at the Royal Gorge Bridge, where he met his future wife, Patricia "Pat" Javernick. In 1959, he moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico where he worked for Zia Company. In 1960, he and Pat were married. Their four children were born while he worked in Los Alamos. In 1967, he jumped at the chance to work in sunny Northern California, at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. He always said one main benefit was he no longer had to get up in the middle of the night to plow snow like he did in Los Alamos. At Mare Island he went to school to become a Nuclear Inspector. He used to joke he had a "blue glow" from radiation exposure while working on nuclear submarines. After Mare Island, he worked for Sebastiani Winery, in Sonoma, California, until his retirement in 2001. It was a family joke that he had a different "glow" working with wine. He was an avid Scuba diver, and enjoyed target shooting and reloading his own his ammunition. After retirement, he and Pat returned back to Cañon City (and the snow) to be closer to family, including the Javernick spouses, lovingly referred to as the "out-laws". At their home in Lincoln Park, he enjoyed working in his shop and his beautiful landscaped yard. He enjoyed all holidays and looked forward to hiding Easter eggs and decorating for Halloween and Christmas. With all the neighbors, he helped give out candy canes and occasionally played Santa on Snow Flake Lane. He enjoyed and looked forward to his weekly Sunday dinners with his Cañon City grandkids. He and Pat enjoyed playing cards and monthly outings with the "Gadabouts". Hunting for the best "slopper" in the area with friends, was a major goal. In retirement, they

traveled to Italy, Australia, Fiji, Bora Bora, and several locations in Mexico, including riding the train through Cooper Canyon. He especially enjoyed visiting his grandkids in California. Bob had every copy of Louis L'Amour's books, and read each one over and over...endlessly! Bob was able to build or fix anything. He loved tinkering with cars and rebuilt Pat's VW bug engine a number of times. In the early days of stereo, he built his own stereo system and loved to blast Johnny Cash. At the family home in Petaluma, California he added a family room, doing most of the work himself. During WWII, and Bob's early childhood, his dad Ray worked for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad in Kelker, Colorado . They lived between the busy railroad tracks with trains going back and forth, all day and all night to Fort Carson. He developed his life long love and fascination with trains there; he never saw a picture of a train he did not want to keep. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Pat; his oldest daughter, Sue (Gary) Lassen of Petaluma, California; and son, Richard (Jaenalyn) of Santa Rosa California, son-in-law, Mark Tursick of Cañon City; his grandsons, Robbie, Josh and Adam Matz of Santa Rosa, California, Drew Lassen of Monterey, California and Elsa (fiancé Trevor Cook) and William Tursick of Cañon City. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Elsa Serve; his daughters, Loraine (Tursick) and Yvonne (Stinson), and grandsons, Bram and Matthew Stinson. His Celebration of Life luncheon will be 1:00pm Saturday, November 17th, at Cañon Royal Event Center, 523 Main Street, Canon City, Colorado. Larry Jamison

October 11, 1946 ~ November 13, 2018

Larry Craig Jamison was born October 11, 1946 in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Lafayette Richard and E. Irene (Roberts) Jamison. He passed away Tuesday, November 13, 2018 from Pulmonary Fibrosis. He graduated from Billy Mitchell High School in Colorado Springs in 1966 and attended Colorado State University, Pueblo, CO, with a major in Art. Larry served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era. After his military service, he married Michele Ann Jaynes on January 30, 1970 and resided in Colorado Springs, CO until 1984, when his family moved to a ranch in Penrose, CO. After a divorce in 1991, Larry moved to Colorado Springs, where on October 22, 1994 he married Mary Rebecca "Becky" (Margheim) Klein. Larry and Becky moved to Canon City, CO in 1996, where they have resided since. Larry was an accomplished operator of heavy equipment. Along with his brother Richard L. Jamison, he owned and operated Jamison Ditching in Colorado Springs, CO. Following that career, Larry operated Highland Survival with his brother, and enjoyed a career as a Scenic

Artist in the film business, working for his brother at Highland Film Productions. Larry has been a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1969. He was an accomplished artist, and his interests included family, friends, survival skills and training, weapons, geology, music and family history. He is survived by his half-brother Dale Watson, sister-in-law Linda (Baird) Jamison, children Becky (Dave) Newman, Aaron (Laura) Jamison, Jeremy Jamison, Rachael Jamison, Matthew (Lisa) Jamison, Ruthie (Brandon) Brady, step-son Matthew C. Klein, 17 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard. Larry's memorial service will be held Monday, December 3, 2018 at 10:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1435 Elm Ave, Canon City, CO. Dallas "Gene" Gariner, 82 passed away November 11, 2018 at his home with his family by his side. He was born August 25, 1936 to Dallas and Frances (Daniels) Gariner in Westcliffe, CO. Gene graduated from high school in Castle Rock, CO and enlisted in the US Marine Corps. He married Barbara Brewer, who preceded him and they had four children. Gene was a truck driver by trade but loved working on the ranch with cattle

In conjunction with Veterans Day, 19 veterans received quilts from Fremont Victory Quilters in recognition for their service to the United States. The first award ceremony was Nov. 5 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4061 in Cañon City. The second award ceremony was Nov. 9 at the Elks Club in Florence. The oldest veteran receiving a quilt, Don Edsall, served in the Army during World War II. The youngest veteran, Parker Bishop, is a Marine who enlisted in 2010 and served in Afghanistan. Two women veterans from the Vietnam and Grenada\Lebanon eras also received quilts. Veterans from every era since WWII received quilts.

FVQ formed five years ago and was initially a Quilts of Valor chapter. Five women started the organization. FVQ grew to more than 35 members, including one man. FVQ eventually separated from Quilts of Valor in order to broaden their reach to more veterans. During the last five years, FVQ awarded more than 350 quilts to veterans. April 23, 1945 ~ July 20, 2018

Sidney Devereaux Thomas was born in Hugo, Co on April 23, 1945, less than two weeks short of Victory in Europe (VE) day and a little more than 3 months before Victory over Japan (VJ) day. At the time, his father was in the Pacific and his mom was on the home front working and keeping vigil. In 1952, he lost his father in a trucking accident. Later his mom remarried in order to keep the family together. He was raised starting in Rush, Peyton,Fort Morgan,Fort Collins,and Julesburg, CO, then Taylor, Nebraska, then to several parts of the United States including Idaho, Oregon, Washington state, and California and finally settling in Utah in the mid 1950's. There his family ran the local sand and gravel pit for awhile then moved into Draper and ran the local coal yard and weigh scales for local and long distance truckers. His stepfather also ran the local junkyard, collecting and selling scrap metal. While in Utah, he found the inner workings of an unexploded grenade while walking to elementary school one morning. Attempting to throw it out of one of the school windows, it exploded and almost tore his hand off. Luckily, the weapon was a "dud". It did enough damage, though, leaving a permanent scar on his index finger where it had been tore open. In 1960, the family moved back to Colorado. When he was age 15, Gene, as he was now known, ran away from home. From this point on, he became a very colorful character. He sold books for awhile, and then joined the US Navy Submarine service. Gene served on board the USS SEA DEVIL (AGSS400) and USS GUDGEON (SS567). His subs conducted exercises in the Pacific, before coming back to the US. While in California, he was separated from the Navy. Gene traveled considerably and ultimately settled in

Miami Beach, Florida. There he parked cars for some high-ranking hotels along the beach, like the Fontainebleau and others. He also married. Not enough excitement, Gene traveled back to California where he spent several years working as a petitioner, gathering signatures to pass laws there. Very successful, he employed others and made it a good business. In later years, he moved back to CO, never to move again. He became an avid fisherman who loved the outdoors and the sport itself. He held several records regarding the size of fish he caught. He worked at a concrete business in Colorado Springs as a concrete truck driver; in the evenings Gene delivered pizzas to the local military bases in his VW bug. Toward the end of his life he moved to Canon City, CO where he lived out the remainder of his days. He is the author of "The Thomas Technique" an e-brochure about solving leg cramps,offered for sale on the Web. No one here today can say that Gene did not have a good sense of humor and he used it at every opportunity he was given. He could always see the humorous side of any subject. There was no subject for which he did not have an opinion. In later years, he became active in local politics. Politics consumed his life up to his death. Gene died from a massive coronary. His entire family who loved him very much will sorely miss him. It is believed that in the last couple of years Gene became a Christian, thereby ensuring his eternal salvation. He was preceded in death by Edwin & Iva Marie Thomas. He is survived by Leona & John Duncan, J.B. & Diana Thomas, Mary & Jim Gertz and Teresa & Ken Holbert, several nieces and nephews. A service will be held on Saturday, Nov 17, 2018 at 2:30pm at the Station, Penrose, CO

The Christmas Parade of Lights has not been cancelled, or postponed in its thirty year history. The parade will go on as scheduled. This is a winter event. We ask that you plan accordingly. There may be snow on Main Street. The parade will start at 5th Street and end at 10th Street.

Any entry that has hoofed animals, or any entry deemed high risk by the City of Cañon City or the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce, must provide a minimum of $1,000,000 liability insurance naming the City of Cañon City and the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce as certificate holder and as additional insured. Certificates are due no later the 11/16/18. Your entry will not be allowed in the parade if you have not met these requirements.

Drivers of vehicles must be legally licensed and insured. Driver must practice cautious driving skills during the parade lineup and route.

No items (candy, toys, etc.) may be thrown or handed out from a parade entry that would cause spectators to enter the street. Any hand-outs must be done from the curb side only.

All entries that will be judged must be in their assigned staging and setup position by 4:30 p.m. Your entry must be fully assembled, staffed, and all lights illuminated as it will appear in the parade. Your entry representative must be present at this time. Entries not in their assigned position by 4:30 p.m. may not be judged.

8.

Judged entries will be judged in five areas: (1) Use of Lights, (2) Incorporating the theme “Ugly Christmas Sweater”, (3) Originality, (4) Creativity, and (5) Quality of Workmanship. The “Youth Division” is intended to provide equality for entries designed and constructed by youth with adult help and supervision. If your entry is designed and constructed primarily by adults, then your entry should be in the “Community Division”.

13. Do not stop on Main Street after your entry has finished the parade. Please turn north on to 10th Street. Please make arrangements for pickups on 10th Street, or some other area that is north of Main Street. Do not take your entry on to Highway US 50.

15. Parade entry vehicles should enter staging and setup area from North sides of 3rd Street, 4th Street. Entrants will not be allowed to access Main Street from any streets south of Main (4th, or 5th, Streets). 16. We will provide you with staging and setup location that is on, or near, Main Street. We will have parade staff in the staging and setup area to assist you in finding your assigned location. 17. When entering the staging and setup area, please approach your assigned position from the “west”. Your entry must be headed “east”, towards 5th Street. 18. Do not leave your entry unattended at any time. The driver for your entry must be available should we need to have your entry moved. Do not block the middle of Main Street. 19. It is the responsibility of the organization sponsoring the entry to ensure that everyone in your group understands and obeys all the rules. The Cañon City Chamber Christmas parade committee reserves the right to refuse entry into the parade, and/or to remove any participant from the parade for any reason the parade director deems appropriate. I want to say Thank You to all of our Veterans, Past-Present-Future. Without you, we would not have a voice in elections. As I sit here writing the last edition of “Elections Matter” for 2018, I cannot get out of my mind that it is Veteran’s Day – the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI. Just the fact that I can sit here and write, in a free country, able to enjoy the freedoms that the greatest country in the history of the world has to offer is almost beyond comprehension. We owe a HUGE debt of gratitude to those service men and women -- past, present and future, who have insured that all of us can continue to live in freedom. Thank you veterans for your service and sacrifice! The 2018 election is behind us and the cast is set for the 72nd Colorado General Assembly. I would like to take a moment to say a big THANK YOU to all of you who supported me for a 4th term! It has been an honor to serve you in the past, and I am blessed with the opportunity to continue to serve. I would be remiss if I did not recognize my opponent – Erin Kelley. We made a pact to keep our HD 60 campaign positive from the “git-go”. We spoke to our records, our aspirations and our willingness to serve HD 60. Based upon comments about negative campaigns across the state, I feel voters in HD 60 appreciated our positive approach to this election cycle. Thank you, Erin. The 2018 election cycle in Colorado presented an interesting dichotomy. State-wide, there was a move to elect liberal-leaning state officials. On the other hand, voters across the state rejected most tax and spending issues – a reflection of conservative values. The simple fact of the election? Colorado still includes both liberal and conservative mindsets. That being said, the balance of power under the Golden Dome shifted to the left in both the House and Senate. For the 72nd General Assembly, the House appears to be Democrat by a 41-24 majority (the largest since 1936, I believe). The Senate will be Democrat by a 19-16 margin. With majorities in both chambers, coupled with a D in the Governor’s Mansion, most democrat-

sponsored bills will have a wide open road to becoming law. In the 2013-14 General Assembly, I served in the House under similar circumstances. The R’s were in the minority in both chambers with a Democrat Governor. The D’s over-reached by forcing through their agenda. Over-reach resulted in the recall of 2 Senators and the resignation of a 3rd. We just completed a session with split chambers where folks had to “play nice” in order to get bills passed. When the scale tips heavily in one direction, no matter which party is in control, the temptation to over-reach looms large. As your representative, I will continue to be a strong voice for rural Colorado. I will fight for the people in HD 60. Over the past 6 years, I have been fortunate to have passed numerous bills on a myriad of subjects. Because of the relationships I have built in the past, I plan to continue being an effective legislator. The key to getting things done while in the minority is being respected by, and working cooperatively with the other side. I have proven in the past that I can operate effectively on the House floor. The 2018 election vividly demonstrated that elections DO matter. You just thought it was over – get ready…only 23 ½ months until the next one! The 72nd General Assembly will officially begin on January 4th, 2019. For questions concerning the General Assembly, please feel free to visit the Colorado General Assembly website.
