SUPPORT The Fremont Community Foundation has been putting on one of the FUN events held in Cañon City for nine years and, in 2018 with what we hope is the biggest and best FlashBack on Main ever, we will do it again. Now for the BIG BUT - we cannot do it without community support. To put on an event like this is very expensive and tons of hard work from our Board. We advertise this event as “FREEEEE” but as we all know there “ain’t nothing free” in this world. Believe it or not, the cost for this “free” event runs between $15,000 and $20,000! The Fremont Community Foundation has had many great sponsors for events throughout the years for the numerous events we’ve created starting with the Belvedere Blues Fest in 1999 - right up to now for our 2018 FlashBack on Main street dance. None of the fun events that we, and other organizations, put on throughout the year in our community would be possible without local businesses and private citizens stepping up and donating the money we need to operate and manage these events. Without local support events like ours will be difficult or impossible to continue and could go away. Norman Bowie

Aug. 4, 1925 ~ Jan. 26, 2018 Alan “Dean” Miller, age 92, went home to the Lord on Jan. 26, 2018, in Aurora. He was born in Electra, Texas, son of Warren Gerald Miller and Anna Bernice (Moore) Miller. He grew up in Big Spring, Texas and served in the Army Air Corp in the Philippines during World War II as a high speed radio operator. He earned degrees from Texas A&M University in 1948 in Landscape Architecture, and from University of New Mexico in 1954 in Civil Engineering. He married Helen Wynelle (Wilkinson) Miller in 1946 in Big Spring. After her passing in 2004, he married the late Dorotha Lavon (Fisher) Miller in 2007 in Cañon City. Dean and his family lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico for 45 years where he was City Engineer, followed by a career at Zia Company in Los Alamos as Division Manager-Chief Engineer. He later worked for the University of California as Design Engineer-Construction Manager and owned an engineering consulting business for subdivision and structural design. He was a Boy Scout Master, President of the American Society of Civil Engineers (New Mexico) and President of the State Water Supply and Pollution Control Association. Dean and Wynelle moved to Cañon City in 1994. They were active members of the First United Methodist Church, serving and teaching. Dean met Dorotha in Cañon City through the church, where she actively served, as well. Dean also volunteered with the Gideons and often shared his faith. He enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, boating, reading, tap dancing, and being with family and friends. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Harding (Vic Pelster) of Colorado Springs; son, Mark (Vee Ann) Miller of Aurora; grandchildren, Paige Harding (Justin Sitzman), Pamela (Andy) Rath, Jordan Miller, Anna Miller; great- grandchildren, Hailey and Oakley Simons; and step-niece Susan Anderson. A celebration of Dean’s life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, Holt Family Chapel of the Garden with interment to follow at Mountain Vale Cemetery. Nov. 19, 1958 - Feb. 1, 2018 Norman Bowie, 59, of Penrose went to be with the Lord, February 1, 2018 after fighting a lengthy battle against ALS. Norman was born in Cañon City to James and Virginia Bowie on Nov. 19, 1958. He was a lifelong resident of Fremont County. Norman married Lisa Pickett on April 18, 1980, and they were blessed with 37 years of marriage. Norman is survived by his wife Lisa, and two children: Michael Bowie and Rachel (Justin) Haberman along with two grandchildren Macie and Brooks Haberman; one brother Jim (Rhonda) Bowie; three sisters Ramona (Olie), Debbie (Butch) Hunsberger and Lorie Phipps; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents, and sister Diane Bowie. An electrician by trade, Norman started his own business in 2013 with his children. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and took much pride and joy in restoring his grandfather’s ‘69 Ford truck. Norman coached youth baseball for several years and touched the lives of many people in the process. He was known for his quick wit and sense of humor to all. Norman was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. Norman will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to have known him. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday Feb. 9, 2018 at The Evangelical Free Church located at 3000 E. Main St., Cañon City, CO 81212. David Neil Ewing 1948 – 2018 David Neil Ewing, born Dec. 14, 1948, in Glenwood Springs, Colorado to Dean and Lynda (Clark) Ewingof Gypsum, Colorado, died Jan. 19, 2018, in Denver. David attended grades 1 through 8 in Gypsum and Eagle County. After the family moved to Cañon City, he went to Cañon City High School, graduating with the class of 1964. During this time, he joined the Methodist Church. David continued with graduation from CSU Pueblo. He is survived by his mother Lynda Ewing of Cañon City, two brothers, Glen of Eagle, and Paul of Grand Junction, his long-time friend Susan Meier, his daughter Leslie, three grandchildren: Ryan, Aidan, and Allison, and numerous nieces and nephews. David was a life member of the NRA. He enjoyed friends and family and especially visits with his friend Charles Roberts of Cañon City. The family will hold a private memorial gathering and scattering of his ashes later in 2018.

Rodger Allen Mulvaine Sept. 11, 1939 ~ Feb. 1, 2018 Rodger Allen Mulvaine, 78, of Cañon City, passed away February 1, 2018. He was born in Marion, Ohio on September 11, 1939 to Darold and Ava (Gruber) Mulvaine. On April 20, 1963, Rodger married Mary King. He worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons for 27 years, where he served as a Health Services Administrator and Physician’s Assistant. In addition, he was the Director of Operations for Valley Wide Incorporated for ten years. Rodger was a proud veteran of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, Lions Club and was a member of the Cañon City Marine Corps League for many years. Rodger is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mary Mulvaine; children, Kimberly Mulvaine Powell, of Pueblo, Todd Allen Mulvaine, of Arvada, Roger Eric Mulvaine, of Traverse City, Michigan; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; siblings, Jack Mulvain, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, half-sister, Tony Mulvain Bailey, of Ohio; half-brother, Pat Mulvain, of Ohio, numerous extended family members and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ronald Mulvain. The family would like to invite all who knew and loved Rodger to his funeral service, 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2018, Holt Family Chapel of the Garden, Chaplain Ray Linebaugh of the Cañon City Marine Corps League officiating. Loyd Esburn Chastain Jr. April 9, 1931 ~ Feb. 4, 2018 Loyd Esburn Chastain Jr., of Cañon City, went to be with his Lord and Savior Feb. 4, 2018 after a lengthy illness. He was born April 9, 1931, in Cotton Center, Texas to Loyd and Myrtle (Asbill) Chastain. He grew up in Lubbock, Texas where he graduated from Lubbock High School. He was a member of the Texas National Guard where he qualified as a sharp shooter. He worked several jobs prior to moving to La Junta, Colorado. There, he purchased his own business, Tom’s Wholesale Snack Foods, in 1968. He remained in this business for 42 years while purchasing the Tom’s distributorship in Colorado Springs along the way. Loyd married Bernice Hill in Clovis, New Mexico in1950. God blessed them with four children. His business provided the family needs, but Bernice (the Lil’ Darlin’) was the reason he woke up every day. He loved his family and he also loved World Wide Wrestling. Loyd was a great guitar picker and played at the Royal Gorge Manor for his friends. He was a member of the Cañon Community Baptist Church in Cañon City. After his retirement he and Bernice joined the RVer’s and traveled around the country in their motor home for several years before settling in Cañon City. Loyd was a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and loving friend to many people. To say he will be greatly missed is grave understatement because his passing will leave a void in the world of all who knew him. Loyd is survived by his wife, Bernice; two daughters, Debbie (Larry) Stephens of Cañon City, Shelley (Lonnie) of Lake Ozark, Missouri; son, Shawn (Kathy) Chastain of Cañon City; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Minnie (Finnis) Hill; and daughter, Marla Benson, who he called Molly Kay. She welcomed him into the arms of Jesus. God speed to you, Dolphin. Memorial service, 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at Cañon Community Baptist, 1111 Monroe Cañon City. Services have been entrusted to Holt Family Funeral Home. Charles Wilson Plummer June 29, 1935 - January 26, 2018 Charles Wilson Plummer 82, lost his battle with Heart Disease and passed away at his home in Fort Mohave, AZ on January 26, 2018. Born to Wilson and Jennie (Sasso) Plummer in Rockvale, CO on June 29, 1935. Charles graduated from Canon City High School in 1953. He was an outstanding athlete and went on to study at CU, DU, and Westminster College. Charles married Shirlee Young of Fort Morgan in 1956. A son and two daughters were born. After college, the family moved to Canon City where Charles worked at Cotter Corp, Portland, and Prudential before moving to Whittier, CA to pursue a career in Law Enforcement. He graduated from the Police Academy and obtained a BS degree from the University of California. Charles served with dedication and valor for 31 years with the Whittier Police Department as Detective, Sargent, Watch Commander, and Head of Administrative Services. He married Julie Juarez in 1985 and retired to Apple Valley, CA and Fort Mohave where he worked in Real Estate. Charlie was an avid sports fan of the Denver Bronco, the L.A. Angels, and UCLA. Charles is survived by his wife, Julie; son, Richard (Denise) Plummer, Liberty Lake, WA; and daughter, Shawn Plummer, Long Beach, CA; step-sons, Manny, David (Lisa) and Patrick Juarez; his brother, John (Anne) Plummer, Canon City; step-sister, Vivian Logue, Grand Junction; and former wife, Shirlee Plummer, Whittier; grandchildren, Wesley (Julee) Plummer, Bradley (Julie) Plummer, Sarah Martin Galvin, and Megan Maldoon; great-granddaughter, Harper Plummer; nieces, Karen (Greg) East and Vicki (Larry) Gardner. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Susan Plummer Muldoon. We will hold Charlie dear to our hearts and will forever miss the mischievous twinkle in his eyes, and his compassion for others.

In Loving Memory Donald E. Barr

1930-2018 Donald Barr passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 5, 2018. Don was born on May 27, l930 to George and Bessie Barr. Don was one of seven siblings; four brothers and three sisters. At the early age of eight, his father George succumbed to diabetes. His mother then re-married to George Herbert Ambrosier. They resided in Cheyenne Wells, CO on a cattle ranch before settling in Florence. During his early teenage years, Don would follow the wheat harvest through eastern Colorado and Kansas. As a boy, the Barr family endured rough times. Bessie would make most of their clothes from used flour bags and their main source of heat would come from burning cow chips. When Don was around the age of eighteen, the Korean War had started and he was drafted into the United States Army. It wasn’t long before he found himself a long way from home and on the battle field of Korea. During the conflict, Don was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery and valor. He crawled his way through a mine field to save a wounded comrade. After being discharged from the service, Don returned to Florence to be reunited with his wife Rose Marie Del Monte. They in turn had two children, John and Donna. Don worked the freight yard in Pueblo, then worked construction helping to erect the first silos at Portland Cement. After leaving the construction trade, Don went to work for the Corley Coal mine south of Florence. He spent many years in the mine until the coal industry slowed down. He then went to work for the city of Florence as a police officer. After his tenure as a city cop was over, Don went to work for the Ford Garage in Florence, better known as ‘Luke’s Motors.’ There he would remain for the next 30 years until retirement. Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his ATV, and spending time at his cabin on the mountain with his good friends Paul and Kathy and his beloved family. He enjoyed his annual camping trips with his kids and grandkids in the furthest depths of the mountains (watch out for the crazy men in that little orange jeep—ha ha!!). His love for his family was beyond belief. He was a man of few words but a man of his word. He was a man’s man, a very proud man. Don was preceded in death by his mother and father, brothers Wayne, Lester, and Dale, as well as sisters Iva and Lois, and last, but not least, his friend and longtime companion German short-hair “Jake”. Don is survived by his twin sister of eighty- seven years Dorothy Steel of Colorado Springs. His son John (Debbie) Barr of Cañon City, and daughter Donna Smith, also of Cañon City. Don has four grandchildren: Dawnell (Jason) Huitt of Fort Collins CO, Chad (Katie) Barr of Cañon City CO, Trudy Smith also of Cañon City and Lacey(Clifford) Dorsett of Conroe, TX . Don was also blessed with eight wonderful great grandkids, Brittanie, Tyler, Stephan, Tristen, Morgan, Kristen, Rylee and Zander. Although you are no longer here and already dearly missed you will always remain in our hearts and on our minds. Beyond a shadow of a doubt you were the Greatest Dad, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa ever. We love and miss you so much!. At Don’s request there will be no service. Arrangements are being handled by Holt Family Funeral Home. In closing~ Dad, we would like to say… “Our Christmas Eve routine will forever change, Our memories of Cottonwood and Elk Country will always remain. Kingerys continue Cañon City K-Lawn tradition By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Cañon City K-Lawn, a family business that started 15 years ago, will continue serving the community under the proprietorship of a new family. Tyler and Kerri Kingery purchased the local franchise from Gwen Bradbury, whose late husband, Brandt Bradbury, started the business with Kurt Stringari in 2003. Brandt Bradbury was the sole owner from 2005 until his death in July 2017. The Kingerys, along with their son, Hayden, plan to continue to offer the same level of customer service that Bradbury’s customers have come to expect. Tyler Kingery is familiar with the lawn care service because he has been a customer and his brother started Rocky Mountain K-Lawn in Alamosa 10 years ago. “I have some pretty big boots to fill, but I am going to give it 110 percent,” he said. “We’re not going to try to replace, we are just going to try to carry on the tradition of how this goes and help however we can.” Gwen Bradbury said it was important that the transition be seamless. “Brandt worked so hard to build a business reputation and a legacy in our community, and people relied on him and relied on the product,” she said. “We are so thrilled that all of his hard work will continue, and his legacy and that tradition can continue on. I am so grateful.”

She said Tyler Kingery’s character and integrity already have spoken volumes to the Bradbury family, and she is thankful that the business is going to a family who shares the same values. “As Tyler and I talked about this business, we continually went back to a desire to continue on what Brandt had started,” Kerri Kingery said. “We knew he was customer oriented, we knew he had a heart for people, we knew his character shone through everything, so when we decided to buy the business, that was one of our biggest factors — to make sure that continued.” The Kugler Company manufactures the fertilizer for the K-Lawn care program. It is a four-step approach that provides all the care lawns need with a combination of quality fertilizers, nutrients, pest control and weed control. Nicholas Morgan Herniak May 18, 1951 - Jan. 30, 2018 Nicholas Morgan Herniak completed his journey in life on January 30, 2018. He was born on May 18, 1951 in Canon City, CO and was preceded in death by his parents Nicholas and Ellen (Schaeffer) Herniak. He is survived by his wife, Denise (Smelker) Herniak; daughter, Heather Engle; son, Chief Petty Officer Two, U.S. Army Jarod (Jennifer) Herniak; step-daughters, Jana Hanavan and Melissa Deckelman; grandchildren, Petty Officer US Navy Matthew Engle, Ellington, Ella Rae, and Sophia Herniak, Luciano and Sebastian Santiago; sisters, Eva Mary (Gary) Miller, Dorothy (Bill) Bruton, Doris Williams, Martha Perry; and numerous nieces and nephews. Nicholas was a contractor by trade and last worked for Belfor Property Restoration in Denver. Cremation has taken place and a private memorial to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation in his name.
