In Loving Memory Russell Wayne Atwood Russell Wayne Atwood 92, born December 24, 1925 in Lamar, CO, passed away on April 10, 2018 Canon City, CO. He was preceded in death by parents Harry and Margaret Atwood. His wife Marian Eva (Beck) Atwood and son Dennis R. Atwood. Siblings: James and Phillip Atwood, Bettye Dansby and Barbara Long. Russ is survived by: Son Michael R. Atwood. Daughter-in-law Donna Atwood. Grandchildren: William (Jenny ) Atwood, Scott Atwood, Dawn Atwood, Krista Atwood, and Wayne Atwood. Great grandchildren: Marian Atwood, Mychael Atwood, Dalton Simms, Hunter Simms, Drew Atwood and Andrew Wright. Siblings: Harry Atwood, Tom (DeVera) Atwood, Aaron (Mona) Atwood, Eunice (Russell) Berry, Ann (Jerry) Wood, Karen (Fred) Javernick, Nancy (Gene) Wininger, Alita Jaqua and sister-in-law Elaine Atwood, and special friend Leslei Gayler. As well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins Russ grew up and attended school in Cañon City and Penrose area. At the age of 17 he left home to join the navy. Serving from February 1944-November 1946 as part of the frogmen unit (today known as Seals). Upon his discharge from active duty, he was an active member in the navy reserves until his retirement as commander chief in 1984. Russ spent his working career with Husky Oil Reﬁnery in Cheyenne, WY for 35 years. Retiring as General Manager for plants #1 and 2. A private family memorial will be held in Cañon City at a later date. In leu of ﬂowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice in his name. A military service and burial will be held at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella, CA.

Ferdinand Aron Mueller (Ferd)

Ferdinand Aron Mueller (Ferd) of Canon City, Colorado passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at the age of 95. Ferd was born on January 7, 1923, in Bellevue, Iowa. He was the 4th oldest of 12 children born to Alfred and Nettie Mueller. He was an active youth helping to drive the team of horses during oat harvesting, picking blueberries with his sisters, milking the cow, cleaning the barn and serving as an altar boy in the local Catholic Church. He took a job at Schaab’s garage (a local fueling station and repair shop) at the age of 12. There he saved enough money to buy the family a half beef, along with some toys and candy for his sisters. He enjoyed sports and music helping to start a local baseball team and playing drums in a school band. As he neared adulthood, Ferd seriously considered entering into the Catholic Priesthood as a career. These plans were interrupted by a blind date with Jeanne Catherine Chapman, who was attending Clark College in Dubuque, Iowa. Soon after their first date, Jeanne became ill with an ear infection and during this time, Ferd began to care for her deeply and the two planned to marry. The plans were delayed in 1943 when Ferd was drafted into the Army to join the allied forces in Europe during World War II. On one particular leave, Jeanne joined Ferd stateside for a military ball where the two swore that whatever song was playing when they entered the ball would be “Their Song”. The award for his Battalion came late and Mueller never received his award until the local VFW in Canon City presented his medal in a special ceremony with family and friends when he was 90 years old. Ferd returned from the war and was married to Jeanne on June 17, 1947 in Dubuque, IA. He entered Iowa State on the GI bill and received a degree in Ceramic Engineering in June of 1949. In July of 1949, the pair moved to Canon City, Colorado where they would go on to live and raise a family for the next 69 years. Their first of 7 children was born in Canon City on September 25, 1949. Ferd’s professional career started with the move to Canon City and a job at Freeman Firebrick, where he learned all aspects of the manufacture of fire brick for the steel industry. Freeman Firebrick was a supplier to the Steel Mill in Pueblo, CO. When the founder, Charlie Freeman, retired, he sold the company to Harbison Walker. When Harbison was threatening to close its doors, Mueller pulled together a team of private investors and founded Colorado Refractories, a company that employed hundreds of Fremont County residents for over 22 years. Colorado Refractories not only provided its signature “Royal Gorge” fire brick to CF&I Steel in Pueblo, but forged into new technologies developing specialty refractories and monolithic products. Under Mueller’s leadership, the company thrived until he sold it in 1990 to Adience (later BMI) France, who continued to run the company another 8 years. The one asset of Colorado Refractories that Mueller did not sell were the mineral rights for the stone in and around Fremont County, from which came the rich clay for brick manufacturing. These rights proved to be the fuel for Mueller’s next venture. Above the clay was a layer of decorative sandstone that Ferd always thought made for beautiful landscaping. In the 1990’s he began to market this stone to local communities for decorative retaining walls and city landscaping. After landing a huge contract with the City of Breckenridge, Siloam Stone was off to the races. Ferd hired his sons, Matthew and Brad to run the company and Siloam Stone thrives to this day employing office staff and laborers at the quarry near Wetmore, Colorado. Ferd Mueller believed in and promoted the community around him. He often referred to community as an apple tree where each person draws

from the other and from the community itself. As a civic leader, he served as President of the Chamber of Commerce, the railroad crossing committee, and the committee to bring cable television to Canon City. He was a Boy Scout leader (Silver Beaver Award recipient), a life-long Rotarian and founding member of the Fremont County Engineering Scholarship Foundation. He loved to go dancing with his beloved Jeanne, sing with family and friends and eat out at local restaurants. Local restaurant owners and employees knew him to not just tip the servers but cashiers and other staff members. He wouldn’t just pay his bill and leave but visited with and encouraged patrons and staff as he made his way out of the restaurant. His typical discourse began with a gruff, stern command or reprimand for shock factor. After he got your attention, his eyes would twinkle and a grin would form to let you know it was all in good fun. Perhaps his most significant community contribution was his love and dedication to St Michael’s Catholic Church, where he was not only a member and regular attender but also served on parish council and stewardship committees as well as being a Eucharistic minister and Lecter. When Dementia began to afflict Jeanne, Ferd became her care giver in the home, along with help from family members. After a serious stroke left Jeanne requiring constant care at Progressive Care Center (PCC), Ferd visited her every day to enjoy some time together and say their evening prayers. As Ferd’s body began to fail him, he joined Jeanne at PCC where the two enjoyed meals and time together for over a year, not to mention the fine care and love from the staff at PCC. In June of last year (2017), Ferd and Jeanne celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Ferd is preceded in death by his parents (Alfred and Nettie Mueller) and his siblings (Esther Wood, Hazel Cooney, Arlene Mader, Lois Palmer, Alfred Mueller, William Mueller, Loren Mueller, and Robert Mueller). He is survived by his sisters (Mary Weisnewski, Bernice Belitz and Betty Ripley), his wife Jeanne Mueller, his children and their spouses Doug (Carol), Jeff (Connie), Nancy (Stan) Silengo, Brad (Linda), Matt (Sharon), Mark (Karen), Jim (Thelma), along with 34 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Vigil service, 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 25, Mass of Christian Burial 9:00 a.m., Saturday, May 26, St. Michael Catholic Church. Interment with military honors to follow, Lakeside Cemetery, in Canon City. In Loving Memory Joseph(Joe) Walker Miller February 1931- December 2017

Joseph Miller was born in Macon County Missouri to Louis Agassiz Miller and Irene M. Walker on February 27, 1931. He graduated from The University of Maryland in 1953, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. In 1954, Joseph was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in The United States Air Force. He attended Airborne Electronics School at Keesler AFB, MS. He was assigned to the 74th Air Rescue Squadron, Ladd AFB, Alaska, where he remained until December 13, 1955 when reassigned to Lowry AFB, CO for discharge from active duty. Joseph met the love of his life, Dorothy Mae Jennings, of Hull Iowa, on a blind date. They married on March 30, 1958 in Louisville, Colorado. After Dorothy passed away in 2016, Joe was fond of saying that while he may have made a couple of stupid mistakes in his life, marrying Dorothy wasn’t one of them. Joseph became a Certified Public Accountant in 1976. He worked at The Malcolm Agency in Louisville Colorado, Cheyenne National Bank and Wyoming Bank Shares in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He and Dorothy relocated to Dallas Texas in 1976 where he worked for Oak Cliff National Bank, First National Bank and EDS (Electronic Data Systems). He retired from EDS in 1996. Joseph was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, camping, hiking, skiing, canoeing, and sailing. He loved to work with wood and built many finely crafted objects from furniture and cabinets, to

clocks, musical instruments and even a canoe. He loved to read and research his family’s genealogy. He loved music, particularly classical, and was teaching himself to play the organ. He also learned to play the Dulcimer (one of the instruments he built). He enjoyed watching his wife perform in plays at The Cheyenne Little Theatre, as well as attending performances of the many Choirs and Choral Groups of which Dorothy was a member. Above all, Joseph loved the Lord, and brought up his family with principals he learned from the Bible. He was always active in his church. He was an Usher, and a Sunday School Teacher for several of the churches he attended in both Dallas, and Canon City. He was a Church Elder and volunteered as accountant/ﬁnance ofﬁcer for the First Christian Church in Canon City. Joseph was a member of the Gideon’s for many years and served as treasurer for his “camp” several times. He was active in the outreach and shut-in ministries for both the Gideons and the church. He was also a member of Lyon’s Club and Toastmasters. Joseph will be remembered for his faith, his compassionate service and his dry sense of humor. Joseph is survived by his son Joseph Miller Jr., his daughter Allison J. Miller (m. MJ Presley), grandchildren Stuart, Benjamin, Nathan (m. Aubrey), Patrick (m. Patricia), Aaron, Rachel and Katherine Presley. Great grandchildren: Nathanial, Caroline, Keith, Kaiden, Kerrick, Kedric and Abigail Presley. A Celebration of Life service will be held 10 AM, Wednesday, May 9th, 2018, at The First Christian Church of Canon City, 320 North 16th Street.

Kathryn Jean (Lowry) Lopez February 6, 1939 ~ December 12, 2017

Kathryn Jean (Lowry) Lopez, 78 passed away December 12, 2017. Kay was born in Canon City, Colorado to Curtis and Clara (Bannigan) Lowry. She graduated from Canon City High School then went on to graduate from Eastern College (PA). Kay loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was active in many American Baptist Churches. Kay and Conrad owned several restaurants throughout Colorado and a dress shop in the US Virgin Islands. She has three children, Mark Lopez (Sihem), Cliff Lopez (Denise) and Kathleen (Lopez) Chandler (Roger), and ﬁve grandchildren. She lived in Aurora, Colorado with her daughter’s family since her husband, Conrad Lopez, Jr. passed in 2011. Graveside service, 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 06, 2018 at Mountain Vale Cemetery, Canon City, Colorado where she will be laid to rest with her husband Conrad Lopez Jr. Services have been entrusted to Holt Family Funeral Home. Bridge Youth Center Hosts Fundraising Event Chris Graham Daily Record

The Bridge Youth Center hosted its inaugural Bridge Bash on Saturday night to educate residents about what the center has to offer, as well as help raise funds for the organization. “Our primary goal here at the Bridge Youth Center is to be able to build relationships with these kids so we can bridge the gap and earn the right to enter into their lives to help them out,” Pastor Sean Meagher said. The evening consisted of a Hawaiian-style dinner catered by Chicago Bobs, many different rafﬂe prizes and a silent auction. Presentations were given by the director of the youth center Justin Smith and Pastor Meagher. The Bridge is a place for middle school and high school students to spend Friday evenings in a fun, safe environment. “There is nothing for teenagers to do; there was no space really dedicated and purely built uniquely for the

middle school high school communities,” Smith said. Smith discussed how the center was created, where the idea started from and what the future holds for the center. The idea for the Bridge was modeled after a youth center that opened after the Columbine High School shooting that happened 19 years ago in April 1999 in Littleton. Smith’s wife went to a school not far from Columbine and she saw the impact of the youth center. The two would talk about that dream, but it started to become a reality when they brought that idea to Pastor Meagher after the couple read stories about the problems facing the youth in Canon City. Pastor Meagher located a building and secured funding from the church to make Smith and his wife’s dream come true. Smith became the director of the center and it opened in December 2016. Since the opening of the center, there have been more than 10,000

check-ins, more than 1,000 unique students have attended and more than 100 regular students. The center is open from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Friday nights and serves middle school and high school students. In the future, Smith wants to open the center more days of the week, as well as do more outings with practical vocational training and volunteer development. All of those requires more volunteers and more funding. That is where the Bridge Bash comes in. All the funds raised will go to running the center, as well as to eventually ﬁxing the roof of the center, adding a commercial kitchen and to open up the ceiling. Elm Avenue Greenhouse continues to thrive

For three generations, the women of Elm Avenue Greenhouse have had a thriving business that has blossomed from a humble beginning. Vicky Lippis bought the greenhouse with her parents, Tom and Polly Dixon, in 1986. Lippis said her parents had a vision of running a family-owned greenhouse. The Lippis family has made that dream a reality. They started their ﬁrst growing season in January 1987. Lippis, who is a proclaimed self-taught grower, said she struggled in the beginning, but she eventually got the plants to thrive. Today, the business has 25,000 square feet of coverage, which includes six greenhouses. The business starts planting in January. About 75 percent of their inventory is “homegrown.” “Very seldom do we ever get anything in that’s already potted up,” Lippis said. “Once they are gone, they are gone. So we have no place to reach out to grab in more. So that sets us apart from other people.” From January until July 3, the family is growing and tending to plants with

Helping Lippis is her daughter Heather, daughter-in-law Beth Lippis, who joined 13 years ago, and granddaughter Abrianna, who at 12 years old is already contributing to the business. “She does know how to grow from seed,” Vicky said. “And she has been here since day 1.” The family believes they will expand the business in the future based on demand, but they love Fremont County and the customers who have supported them through the years. “I’ve lived here all my

life. I wouldn’t think of any other place to live,” Vicky said. “I just love the season and the repeat customers.” In addition to the greenhouses, the business offers a Gift Shop that offers whole-bean roasted, specialty coffees and a wide variety of unique home, garden and patio décor. The shop, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day until July 3, also offers fashionable stiletto planters; “garden diva” picks and birdfeeders; ﬂame pots; candles; chocolates; and sling-gardening aprons.
