Edith Mae Masar
February 5, 1929 ~ November 8, 2019 Edith Mae Masar passed away peacefully in her home on November 8, 2019. Edith was born on February 5, 1929 in Brainard, NE to parents Adolph and Mary Pytlik. Edith had one older brother Robert. She grew up in Brainard graduating valedictorian of her high school class in 1946. After high school she attended the College of Saint Mary in Omaha, NE where she received her teaching certificate. Edith met her husband Paul Anthony Masar in Omaha when they were cast in the play, Our Lady of Fatima. Edith continued her education at Creighton University graduating with her bachelor's degree in 1953. Paul and Edith were married on June 13, 1953 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Brainard, NE. Through the following years, Paul and Edith were blessed with eight children. They eventually settled in Canon City, CO in 1974 remaining there for the rest of their lives. She returned to college attending UCCS in Colorado Springs completing her master's degree in education in 1983. Edith spent many years teaching and substituting in the Canon City School District. She was active in St. Michael's Catholic parish where she contributed in writing the history of St. Michael's Church. She was also involved in the RCIA program and teaching catechism to young Catholics. Edith's love and commitment to
her family and the church will be remembered for many years. Edith is survived by children: Paul R. (Sherry) of Colorado Springs, CO daughter-in-law Vicky of La Junta, CO, Mary (Rick) Estep of Anderson, MO, Teresa (Craig Prue) of Colorado Springs, CO, Thomas (Anita) of Penrose, CO, Catherine (Robb) Barban of Castle Rock, CO and Mark (Vicki) of Penrose CO; grandchildren, Laura, Colleen, Martin Ryon, Emily, Travis, Jared, Justin, Sarah, Laura, Hayden, Lane, Tristan, Aaron, Brandon, Cara, Bethany, Brandon and Brett Barban, Callie, Clay, Kaitlin; and eleven great-grandchildren; She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Paul; parents, Adolph and Mary Pytlik; brother Robert; sons Brian Michael and Martin Jerome; granddaughter Michelle; and grandson Brian. October 4, 1952 - November 4, 2019 Steven C. Leighty, 67, of Hamburg, IA and formerly of Penrose, CO entered into peace Nov. 4, 2019 at his home in Hamburg, following a courageous bout with cancer. A celebration of Steve's life will be held at a later date. Preceding him in death were his parents; and three brothers, Charles, Clyde and George Leighty. Left to cherish
his memory are his wife, Ethel Leighty of Hamburg, IA; two brothers, Lester Leighty of Salina, KS and John Leighty of Spring Hill, KS; sister, Pearl Brown of Wichita, KS; two step-daughters, Beverly and Randy Jo Mings; two step-sons, Kenneth T. Haskell, Jr, and Charles H. Diehl; other relatives and friends.
Joelene Kay Johnson
January 10, 1940 ~ November 8, 2019 Joelene Kay Johnson passed away on November 8, 2019 in Canon City, Colorado. Jo was born January 10, 1940 in Oberlin, Kansas to Joseph and Sylvia (Gilliland) Martin. She was the oldest of two children. Her father was a farmer and her mother ran a beauty salon and antique store. After graduating high school, Jo took a job with Frontier Airlines which took her to Denver, Colorado, and eventually to a different job in the downtown Majestic office building. This is where she met the man she would marry, Bruce Johnson. They didn't work together, but she saw him as they rode the elevator to their respective offices. She initiated their 50-year relationship by passing secret admirer notes to him, using the elevator attendant as her messenger. They finally met and went on a picnic together with Jo preparing the perfect fried chicken lunch, and according to Bruce, it was her potato salad that won his heart. They were married in September 1964 and moved to Canon City. It was there that they put down roots and raised their family. The mother of two sons, Erik and Scott, she immersed herself in the pride of being a homemaker and stay at home Mom. She loved to cook delicious meals for her family. She admitted to watching the 'Galloping Gourmet' in the morning, running to the grocery store for ingredients, and cooking that same meal for dinner. Her love for cooking and entertaining got her featured in a local newspaper expose'. She enjoyed gardening and raising chickens, selling dozens of eggs to neighbors, which was a welcome excuse to share a coffee and catch up on her gossip. She and Bruce loved to entertain, and back in the day, their Christmas parties were all the rave. They enjoyed an active social life, were avid golfers and longtime members of Shadow Hills Golf Club. Jo was a very accomplished golfer, winning the Ladies Club Championship numerous times, and played in several Colorado Woman's Golf Association events
around the state. She served on the Shadow Hills Golf Club Board of Directors twice and the Colorado Woman's Golf Association Board of Directors. Golf, family, friendships, and conferences were excuses for Jo and Bruce to travel, making trips all over the country. When she wasn't playing golf, she was busy as a McKinley home-room mother, helping at Rita's Boutique, perfecting crossword puzzles, watching her 'stories', and running to her sons' events, but always made sure the family ate dinner together. She lived the end of her life on her terms. Through several diagnoses of serious illness, she always kept a tenacious spirit to not let it get her down. She was known to be ornery, she made friends easily, and had a soft heart always appreciative to all who helped her as her health declined. She was preceded in death by her husband Bruce, and parents Joseph and Sylvia Martin. She is survived by her brother Steve Martin of McCook, Nebraska; aunt Berniece Zerger of Arvada; sons and their wives, Erik (Marilyn) Johnson of Pueblo West, and Scott (Kelley) Johnson of Canon City; grandchildren Clint Johnson, Vivian Johnson, Josh (Keara) Johnson, Morgan (Adam) Pfaff, Marybeth (John) Jordan, Marriah Dolick, Amber Bradburn, and Ben Kimmick; great-grandchildren Jiuliana and Kashton Johnson; Gabriella, Maddon, Isabella, and Rakella Shepard; Jacob, Janelle and Jaylee Jordan; Natalie, Layla and Adam Kimmick; and many in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews across the country. June 5, 1960 - November 7, 2019 Roger L. Thurk joined his brother, Duane Thurk in heaven on November 07, 2019, at the age of 59 years old. Roger is survived by his mother, Ruth Brown-Miles of Canon City, His brother Peter DeShong of Canon City, his sister and brother in law Mabel & Larry Bogeart of Leadville. His Uncle Bill, Uncle Paul, Uncle Mark, Aunt Lois, and Aunt Marylin. Along with many nieces and nephews, and dear family friend Loretta Remington. The Family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Reppert, for his MANY years of compassionate
care. Without Dr. Reppert's care Roger would not of been able to make it as long as he did. His nurse Celesta, who always went out of her way to help Roger in every way possible, and her support and love toward the family. Matthew Jerome Ellis September 9, 1978 ~ November 9, 2019
Matthew Jerome Ellis passed away at the age of 41 on Saturday, November 9, 2019 in the residence he shared with his wife. Born, Matthew Jerome Cordova, on September 9, 1978 in Canon City, CO, Matt grew up in Canon City where he graduated high school in 1996. While in high school, Matt spent countless hours with his rodeo friends, bronc riding. After high school, he became an electrician and a volunteer fireman until he made the ultimate decision to dedicate 15 years of service to Fremont County as a firefighter. Matt married the love of his life, Hayley Marie Biggerstaff, on November 11th, 2016 where they retired to a ranch in Pueblo County shortly after. Matt enjoyed caring for their cows, goats and chickens. He especially loved his fainting goat, Fiona. When he wasn't busy working on the ranch, Matt enjoyed fly fishing down the river, hunting, taking the boat to Pueblo Reservoir, and practicing his skills on the archery range. Matt participated in many activities he didn't particularly like just to hang out with the people he loved. One of those activities included bowling which he did with his wife and stepson, Tyler. Another activity was ice fishing, which he did to hang out with his best friend, Mitch. Matt was a thoughtful, loving and happy person to everyone in the community. He is known for always having a smile on his face and continuously
making people whom surrounded him laugh. Matt is survived by his wife, Hayley Ellis; his two stepchildren, Tyler and Allie Bryant; his maternal grandmother, Reta Burns-Aljinovich; his mother and father, Pamela and Randy Ellis; his brothers Justin (Tanya) Ellis, Cody (Christine) Ellis, and Chance (Jessica) Ellis; his sisters, Secora (Zachary) Miller and Ginger (Mike) Ryan; his uncles, Bill (Lori) Cordova, Stoney (Syndi) Cordova, and John (Tracey) Cordova; along with his numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Matt was preceded in death by his biological father, Charlie Cordova; grandpa, Joseph Aljinovich; grandpa, Patrick Burns; grandparents, George and Betty Ellis; and grandparents, Louie and Betty Cordova. Saturday, November 23rd, at Pathfinder Park The 9th Annual 5K Turkey Trot will be held at Pathfinder Park between Cañon City and Florence on CO Hwy 115 Saturday, November 23rd. It will take runners through Pathfinder Park on the system of trails. This is a relatively flat course and suits runners of all abilities. This is a great way to spend a beautiful November Saturday before Thanksgiving. It will once again be a Fun Run, meaning it is not a timed event. Participants are encouraged to dress up in a costume and dogs are welcome, but you must clean up after them. Have your pets in costume as well. Participants may run or walk the 5K and there will be multiple stations along the course. At these stations you will be required to perform an exercise/calisthenic. Once you complete this exercise, you will earn a ticket. At the end of the race the awards will be drawn from the tickets you received along the course.
