Artists needed for 10th annual Religious Fine Art Show

The Abbey Events Complex in Cañon City announces a call to artists for the 10th annual Religious Fine Art Show, which opens Aug. 13. The show is seeking works in a wide range of media and genres, that are religious, (all religions accepted), inspirational or Abbey related in some way. All mediums will be accepted including but not limited to oil, watercolor, pastel, chalk/pencil, printmaking, sculpture, photography, digital art, mixed media, illustrations, fiber art, etc. Large art pieces are welcome. Professionals, as well as artists of all ages, are encouraged to enter. The entry fee is $30 per artist for the first three pieces; any additional pieces are $3 each. Entry fee includes one ticket to the artist reception. There is No Limit on the number of pieces you may enter. We also feature a Children’s Exhibit for children ages 17 and under. Each child is limited to two art pieces, $5 entry fee. Registration and delivery of art pieces may be received anytime during regular business hours by Aug. 8. Pieces may be delivered to The Abbey at 2951 E. U.S. 50, Cañon City, business offices located in the Monastery building. The art show will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, from Aug. 13 through Oct. 5, in The Abbey Monastery. Admission to the art show is free. An artist reception will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 5. Tickets to the Artist Reception are $10 each. A “People’s Choice” award will be given in the adult category and children’s category at the artist reception. Leawn Roy Hlavachick April 22,1940 - July 5, 2019

Leawn Roy Hlavachick, dedicated husband and father, died in the presence of his wife Cleta on the morning of July 5. Leawn was born April 22,1940 in Durango, Colorado. At age six, his family relocated to La Jara, where he often helped at the fish hatchery where his father worked. He grew up fishing and hunting, and he had a great appreciation for nature. In his lifetime, he gardened extensively, kept bees, dug a root cellar, hunted, camped, and was a fly fishing enthusiast. Leawn was also a gifted artist, creating beautiful, nature-inspired watercolor paintings, jewelry, murals, carved sculptures, illustrations for children's stories he was inspired to write and more. He read widely and he was knowledgeable about everything from rocks to tying flies to making kites. He was always up for outdoor adventures and road trips, and he loved Cleta's cooking! He was kind and gentle and saw himself as a steward of the natural world that he so loved. He loved his family; even at his most ill, his eyes would light up when family members came to be with him. Leawn attended Adams State College, where he earned a master's degree in fine arts and art education, with a minor in biology. He taught for more than 30 years, beginning in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri in 1964, where he met and married his wife Cleta. They left Ste. Genevieve

in 1968 and moved to Canon City where he taught art at what was then Canon City Junior High School, until his retirement. After retirement, Leawn and Cleta moved to Howard where his daily goals included painting and "fishing the river." He took part-time employment caring for adults with disabilities, and later worked for Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area in Salida, counting rafts floating the river and painting a mural at the park's headquarters. He belonged to The Audubon Society and built and installed many bluebird houses along the Arkansas River. He and Cleta moved to Grand Junction to be closer to family in 2012. Leawn is survived by his wife of 55 years, Cleta; his brother Bill Hlavachick of Pratt, Kansas; daughters Christine Broduer, Susan Montgomery (Barron), and Pamela Middlemas (Harry); grandchildren Tara, Leawna, Tyler, Sam, Shoshana, Mykaela, Meira, Sophie and Weston; and great grandchildren Mason and Rylie. He is preceded in death by his brother Dale Hlavachick (Alice) and sister-in-law Linda Hlavachick. Leawn's memorial service will be at 11:00 Saturday, July 13 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Grand Junction, CO. In lieu of flowers, Leawn would have appreciated donations to Hope West Hospice, Covenant Presbyterian Church or the planting of a tree in his name.

Barbara C. Thacker July 27, 1937 ~ May 28, 2019

Barbara C. Thacker, 81, of Canon City passed away peacefully on May 28, 2019, with her daughter holding her hand. Barbara was born July 27, 1937 in Lancaster, Ohio to George and Grace Stuntz. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Doris, her husband Larry and her son Scott. She is survived by her sister Nancy Ray of Canon City, daughter Brenda (Brent) Evans, her niece Linda Bowers of Lancaster, Ohio and

grandchildren Chance Butler, Jessica Brackin, Jennifer (Jake) Gentry, Colin (Kaila) Evans and numerous great grandchildren. Barbara loved her many animals, camping, fishing, and just being outdoors. She loved her family and friends and enjoyed her life. She will live forever in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fremont County Humane Shelter in Canon City. Raynette "Ray" Douglas March 10, 1966 - July 8, 2019

Raynette "Ray" Douglas, 53, of Canon City passed away July 8, 2019 in Colorado Springs. She was born on March 10, 1966 in Denver, Colorado to Harold and Wilma (Kipp) Miller. Throughout her life, many called her Ray and she spent most of her life in Canon City. After graduating from Kiowa High School, class of '84, she attended USC Pueblo and Pueblo Community College. She met John Douglas, the love of her life and they married in 1987 and soon welcomed Ryan and Austin, two amazing young men that she loved beyond measure and was extremely proud of the men they became. A stay at home mom for many years, Ray went to work after the boys started school. Many remember her time at both Fremont Bank and Pueblo Bank and Trust. However, she will be remembered most fondly for her time spent with the Canon City Re-1 school district, having just completed her 23rd year. She started as the central office receptionist and HR clerk and in 2010 became the Executive Secretary for Special Services. Her office was surrounded by "Mary Moo" figurines among other things. A dedicated secretary and selfless individual, Ray

worked tirelessly for the students and associates of the school district. When she wasn't working at her desk, surrounded by "Mary Moos", you would find her night after night, game after game working the concessions as a member and driving force of the Canon City High School Booster Club. A devoted wife and cherished mother, Ray loved her family with intense devotion and love that only a mother can provide. She was looking forward to her youngest son's wedding and becoming a grandmother. Ray was so very proud of both her sons who she leaves to cherish her memory. She is survived by her parents, husband John and son's Ryan Douglas and Austin (Paighton) Douglas; siblings, Gerald Miller, Pam (Mark) Delaney, Surene (Faron) Anderson and Kipp (Denise) Miller as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends too vast to number. Funeral Services will be held in the Tiger Dome at Canon City High School on Wednesday, July 17, 2019. Visitation at 3:00 pm; funeral service at 4:00 pm. Edwina "Eddie" Yellico November 25, 1930 ~ July 5, 2019

Edwina "Eddie" Yellico left us on July 5, 2019 while in Hospice Care in Williamsburg, CO. She had been suffering from COPD and dementia. She was born in Pueblo, Colorado to Nellie and Edward Dolan on November 25, 1930. In her younger years she was very active in the Wetmore community and was involved in equestrian activities since childhood. She could always be found in the equestrian areas at the Colorado State Fair every year as she was friends with many people there from all over the state and the country. Eddie traveled all over the United States before making Pueblo, Colorado her home. In the late 1960's she purchased the Lone Pine Bar in Wetmore, CO but later sold it and married Dominic "Diamond" Yellico and became a housewife.

She always stayed active and could be found nearly every day at the Wetmore General Store visiting with neighbors and giving out her unique wisdom to anyone who asked. She is survived by her children, Thomas Iovinella of Alamosa, Vince Iovinella of Fort Morgan and Connie Yellico of Wetmore; sister, Joyce Conger of Pueblo CO; grandchildren, Thomas (Krista) Iovinella, Miles (Reagan) Ioviella; great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews. God & Country Music Festival aims to bring awareness to PTSD

The God & Country Music Festival is set to honor heroes from all branches of the armed services – veterans and active duty – as well as ﬁrst responders and Department of Corrections personnel. The community is invited to this free event that will be from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 3 at Veterans Park. There will be live music by the Air Force Academy’s Wild Blue Country, the Sonshine Washtub Band, Gregg Royce and Gypsy Kelso. Pork roast and barbecue chicken will be available for purchase. Cañon City Daily Record and Shopper Small Business Contest

Bunk House Burgers ﬁrst winner Bunk House Burgers has been chosen as the ﬁrst winner in the Cañon City Daily Record and Shopper’s Small Business Contest. The contest, which was launched in March, will award six businesses through the end of the year. A team of independent judges selected the six winners from entry letters. One business will be selected randomly from July through December. Each winner will receive a free website design and hosting for one year, as well as six months of free digital and print advertising (valued at $500 per month). A grand prize winner will be announced in January and will receive a renovation package.
