Rosa May (Crites) Boyd, age 78, passed away Monday, March 11, 2019 in Canon City, Colorado. Rosa was born in Colorado Springs to Albert A. and Ellen A (Melbuer) Crites on May 7, 1940. She grew up in Colorado, attending Penrose High School. Penrose was the center of her universe as a young lady. She met John Boyd in Penrose and the two married on August 16, 1958. Rosa was a devoted wife and mother. She loved her family and took care of everyone around her. She is preceded in death by her husband John Boyd; her parents Albert (Dell) Crites and Ellen (John) Cooper and one brother Chuck Crites. Rosa is survived by her daughters Debbie (Matt) Raia of Thornton, Colorado and Kim (Mike) Mowers of Penrose, Colorado; grandchildren Doyle (Trina) Brewer III of Brighton, Colorado and David (Krysta) Brewer of Brighton, Colorado;
greatgrandchildren Jasmine Brewer, Elisabeth Brewer, Abigail Brewer, Madison Brewer all of Brighton, Colorado; one sister Carolyn (Jim) Mascola of Olathe, Kansas; two brothers Allen (Carrol) Crites of Texas and Wayne (Bev) Cooper of Arizona; many other family and friends. Lola June Raymond passed away on March 10, 2019 at the age of 98 in Cañon City, Colorado. Lola was born on September 9, 1920 in St Francis, Kansas to Frank and Irene (Webber) Wells. She graduated from Del Norte High School in 1935. Lola married Walter Raymond on July 10, 1963 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She lived in the San Luis Valley for many years, retired from San Luis Valley REC and she and Walt moved to Cañon City in the 70's. Lola enjoyed bowling, pinochle, puzzles, drives in the mountains, walking and spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed taking the time to send a birthday card, holiday greeting or a written letter to family and friends. Lola is survived by her nephews Donald (Linda) Wells Jr. & Gary Wells; nieces Leah (Wells) & Jim Dorney, and Patty (Wells)

David Mathue Johnson June 26, 1951 - March 1, 2019
David Mathue Johnson 67, of Cañon City, Colorado died March 1, 2019 in Pueblo, Colorado. Dave was born in Maryville, Missouri June 26, 1951 to Theron Eugene (Tuffy) Johnson and Laura Martha (Marty Smalley) Johnson. The Johnson family moved to Salida, Colorado when Dave was young and later relocated to Cañon City, Colorado. Dave loved everything about Colorado. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and gun collector. Dave graduated from Cañon City High School in 1969. After high school, Dave had quite an eclectic array of jobs. He was a gunfighter at Buckskin Joe, a mortuary attendant for his stepfather Bill Wilson at Wilson Mortuary, a bartender/bouncer at The Ott Hotel, drove a Kenworth truck on the Alaska Pipeline and cowboyed on many local ranches. In the 70's he began working in construction and found a love for ironwork. Being way up there above it all as a connector was his favorite place (except out among the cows under the Colorado starry night sky). Dave was an ironworker for 42 years, the last 30 with LPR Construction, of Loveland, Co where he served as a Senior Superintendent. Dave was always willing to drop everything and go where he was needed to do his job at anytime. Whether it was Blair, Nebraska in the middle of winter or Yuma, Arizona in the middle of summer, if he was needed, he was there. One of the things Dave loved most about his job was the ability to give others an opportunity to
get ahead. He was always there with a few bucks to help someone get home in an emergency or to lend an ear if someone needed advice. The life of a traveling ironworker is not easy for many families and Dave was well aware of the toll it can take on people. Dave and Teri always felt blessed with the travel and gypsy life construction allowed them to share with their two grandchildren Kaleb and Marley who traveled, homeschooled and lived with them for the last 10 years. He loved and respected the people he worked with, they were like family to him. Dave is survived by the love of his life, his wife and best friend of 31 years Terecita (Teri) Louk-Johnson of Cañon City, Co; daughter, Lindsay Michelle Johnson (Jay Burwell) of Santa Barbara, Ca; sons, Dave Bennett of Cañon City, Co, and Shane Bennett of Florence, Co, Wendy Carpenter ( Mike); sister, Connie Johnson (Russ) of Weatherford, Texas. Grandchildren Kaleb Howell of Cañon City, Co, Marley Jett of Cañon City, Co and Weston and Wyatt Burwell of Santa Barbara, Ca; and countless amazing friends and family. Dave was preceded in death by father, Theron Eugene Johnson; mother, Laura Martha Smalley; brother, Marc Johnson; and infant son, Mathue Johnson. A Celebration of Life and Memorial Service will be held March 30, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at My Sister's Place in Cañon City, Co. Myrna Faye Lampton October 29, 1938 - March 10, 2019
Myrna Faye Lampton, 80 of Yoder, Colorado; formerly of Penrose, Colorado went to heaven peacefully on March 10, 2019 at St. Francis Medical Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Myrna was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on October 29, 1938 to Vera Estelle Raimer. Myrna's step father was Ben D'Oria. She moved with her family to Montrose, Colorado when she was very young where she grew up and graduated from Montrose High School in 1956. After graduating high school, Myrna married the late Glen James Lampton of Cedaredge, Colorado on December 28, 1956; had four children and was married to Glen for 57 years before his death in 2014. Myrna and Glen raised their family in the Fremont County area of Colorado where all four of their children graduated from Florence High School and Myrna was a long-time member of Beaver Park Friend's Church in Penrose, Colorado. She often spoke of her endearing faith and belief in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Myrna worked many places, but her last jobs were as a dietician for St. Joseph's Hospital and Manor and line worker at Estes Industries. Myrna loved her friends and family beyond comparison. She never missed birthdays of family members or friends. She loved to cook, sew, bake, garden, write letters and especially loved animals. Her little dog, Josie, will surely miss her. She loved flowers and nature. Myrna's children are Nick (Vicky) Lampton
of Florence, Colorado; Cliff (Kristina) Lampton of Roseburg, Oregon; (Phil) Eileen Amaya of Yoder, Colorado; and the late Roger Lampton who passed in 2008. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Chad (Melissa), Stephen and Samuel Lampton; Michael and Glen Lampton; Joshua, Haley and Emma Lampton; Christa (Leland) Smith and Daniel Amaya and her great-grandchildren, Hayden and Makayla Lampton; Jade and Jasmine Lampton; Jesse and Londyn Smith. She is also survived by numerous relatives, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends who will dearly miss her. Gary L. Tomsick passed away March 12, 2019. He was born March 6, 1954 in Pueblo, CO to Charles and Dorothy Tomsick. He attended Custer County High School (CCHS) in Westcliffe and graduated from Southern Colorado State College (now Colorado State University Pueblo). After receiving his teaching certificate, Gary returned to CCHS to teach welding and auto shop. He was also head of school transportation. In 2000 he became the Transportation Supervisor for Pueblo School District #60 and
held this position until he retired. Gary is survived by two children, Carey Burden of Cypress, TX and Jeremy Tomsick of Canon City; one grandchild, Chandler; brother, David Tomsick of Franktown, CO; and aunt, Marion Cowley Savage of Pueblo. She loved the students, the faculty and the community. Martha was also involved with the Florence Senior center. She enjoyed playing cards, bunko and painting. Everyone enjoyed Martha's great sense of humor and amazing courage. She never met a stranger. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend and she will be deeply missed. August 16, 1942 ~ March 10, 2019 Jerry L. Wood passed away on March 10, 2019 at St Thomas More Hospital in Canon City, CO. Jerry was born on August 16, 1942 in Salida, CO to Alice and George Wood. Jerry had an unwavering love for his family and loved sharing time with them. The biggest part of his heart was for his unshakable belief in God and love for his wife and children. The Bell Tower Cultural Center at 201 E. Second St. in Florence is offering new classes in the Spring of 2019. Stained Glass for Adults is taught by Lynn Lemmon-Oliver, the owner of the Blue Spruce Gallery, president of the Florence Arts Council and participant in Southern Colorado galleries and art associations. The Bell Tower is introducing Kathy Dorn Walker as director of the Bell Tower’s ceramic studio which includes wheel throwing and hand building pottery. Beginning and intermediate pottery classes are offered. Color Theory Class for Artists is taught by Bryann McKean. McKean is a retired art professor and well known in his field of art. The class is appropriate for painters, fiber artists, quilters, mixed media artists and interior designs Two Day Watercolor Workshop is taught by George Sanchez of Colorado Springs. Sanchez is a well-respected artist in Colorado Springs and the Bell Tower is honored to host his workshop. Continuing classes include: Mah Jongg, Tuesday, 1-4 p.m., $1 per session, Tai Chi classes, Friday, 9:30-11 a.m. and beginning violin, guitar and voice. Cañon City High School junior Mady Martinez never had competed in a pageant prior to being named the 2019 Music & Blossom Festival Queen on Saturday. And now that she won the top honor, she won’t be able to compete next year, but she plans to use her title as a platform to get youth more involved in the community. She was a little stunned when her name was announced as queen in front of a packed auditorium. “It took me a second to realize that they said my name, and then it just hit me super hard,” she said. Meeting all the other contestants and making new friends was her favorite part of the pageant process, and in the upcoming year, she looks forward to spending time with her court. She was inspired to take part in the pageant after seeing her other friends go through the process, especially Gabby Gonzales, the 2018 queen. Emma Enslow, also a senior, was named the second attendant for the second consecutive year. She also received the “Spirit of Blossom” last year. Being part of the court in 2018, Enslow said she made best friends with girls she otherwise wouldn’t have talked to. “Every moment we were together was fun,” she said. This year she looks forward to spending Blossom Weekend with this new court and having fun representing the community. Miss Personality was senior Jacine Valdez, who also received the “Spirit of Blossom” last year. She said she grew as a person and met so many people the first two years she competed, that she wanted to come back a third time. “I started crying in Sunny (Short)’s arms,” she said when she was named Miss Personality. “This has always been a dream title for me.” Valdez has done three internships with local law enforcement and judicial agencies, and she plans to be a homicide investigator in Los Angeles one day. She won’t be assisting with those agencies during the Blossom Parade this year, because she will be riding on the float. Megan McCarter, who now is in her 17th year as the pageant director, remembers the surprise she felt when her name was called as queen on the same stage 20 years ago. “I truly did not believe that I was

going to win,” she said. “I honestly think that the reason that I won was to do this.” She became the director, a volunteer position, three years after her reign. “Winning was one fleeting year of my life and directing has been 17,” she said. “Even though I love to be part of the Blossom Queen legacy, it’s being the director that is going to leave my legacy in others.” When she took over as director at age 22, McCarter said for her, it was about pageantry and the “glitz and glamour,” but as she has evolved through the years, so has the pageant. “The hands-on interview skills, the public speaking, the sportsmanship — it’s something they only learn in a setting like this,” she said. “I’ve really changed my values of making it about interviewing.” The interview is 60 percent of the candidates’ overall score, and if there is a tie-breaker for queen, the highest interview score breaks that tie.
