Survived by his wife, Bobbi Freeman of Pueblo; his daughter, Tracy (Freeman) and Carl MarinoWagner; grandsons, Joseph, Nicholas, Caleb and Dominic of Friday Harbor, WA; his step-son, Matt and Amanda Largent; granddaughters, Zeriah, Samantha, and Rebecca of Solon Springs, AR; brother, Richard "Duke" and Deborah Freeman of Canon City, CO; brother, Kenneth "Butch" and Lou Freeman of Sterling,CO; and sister, Delane and Miles Condor of Bellflower, MO. was preceded in death by his parents, A.D. and Vendla Freeman of Canon City, CO; sister, Kay (Freeman) Tobin, of Souix City, IA; and first wife, Nona (Copper) Freeman. Dan graduated from Canon City High school in 1970, served in Vietnam in the US Army and returned to work at the CF&I Steel Mill and eventually retired from Davis Wire Mill. Dan enjoyed riding motorcycles. A celebration of life will be held at his home on 12/22/2018 from 1-3pm.

Laura "Laurie" Helton began her new journey Dec 13, 2018 in the company of those she loved. She was born in Los Angeles CA in 1938 where she lived until her move to Canon City in 1979. She spent many years as a bookkeeper and then moved into the mortgage industry where she became a loan originator and then an escrow closer before her retirement. She was a one-time board member for West Central Mental Health and a member of Zonta International. There is nothing she would not do for a friend or her family. Her favorite past time was spending time with her family. She was the family card shark and a crack shot at the shooting range. She always made each day and every occasion so very special for her family, filling those days with traditions, laughter and memories, things we will treasure forever.
She is survived by her husband, Wendell Helton; children, Marty & (Bill) Keen of Canon City, CO, Mike & (Kellie) Dundore of Clovis CA; sister, Betty Morrow of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren, Samantha, Mason, Jeremy, Stephanie, Rhiannon, Charles & Michelle; great-grandchildren, Riona Mae, Kaydence, Aviah & Jadyn; bonus grandchildren, Wyatt, Ren, Gunner & Hayden. March 30, 1937 ~ December 11, 2018 Patrick Henry Rush passed away December 11, 2018 in Canon City, Colorado. He was born on March 30, 1937 in Ponca, Nebraska to Daniel and Cecelia (Curran) Rush. Patrick married Rosemarie Smith on May 2, 1959. He served four years in the United States Air Force. After he was honorably discharged he worked in in sales for over thirty years in Carroll, Iowa. In 1984, he and his wife moved to Canon City and bought The Clean Company (a commercial janitorial service). He was always hard working and conscientious in all of his business dealings. He always had a smile
on his face and was ready with a joke; he always entertained us! He is survived by his wife, Rosie; children, Cathy (Pat) Gute, Mike (Susan) Rush; grandchildren, Stephanie, Jason, Heather, Brenna, Ryan, Colin, Shane & Jen; 15 great-grandchildren and five sisters. Ex-GAC director speaks out after being let go
On Nov. 1, the first day back from my vacation, I was shocked when the Golden Age Center Board of Directors terminated my employment with a vote of no confidence. As the board, they have the right to do so; however, it is not right for them to tell lies about me in the process and to have those lies published in the Daily Record. I thought most of them were above this kind of action. They made it sound like I ran the center into the ground financially and that it might have to close its doors at the end of 2019 and that the situation was “dire.” That is not true! With normal fundraising efforts and used properly, there is enough money to run the center. If there was an emergency, the investment account could serve as a rainy day fund to support the center for many years, unless the board makes bad choices from this time forward. I have never had access to any of GAC’s investments or the checking account. The board approved and signed all checks. During 2017 and 2018, I did go over budget in expanding our transportation services. We had promised to expand the hours of service from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. It was difficult to fulfill this promise without hiring two part-time drivers. This not only allowed us to serve more people in need but also allowed us to receive additional reimbursements in the future from the Colorado Department of Transportation. Reimbursements are based on the number of riders. Additionally, I set up the Colorado Association of Transit Agencies to pay for a planner to determine whether we could successfully operate a fixed route in our area. In July 2016, the Area Agency on Aging requested the expansion of their meals from three days a week to five days a week. The board accepted this request understanding it would be an additional cost to the GAC budget. This increase was accepted because we felt the Nutrition Program was so important to the seniors. The statement about the grants was not true either. In fact, two foundations have increased their support over the last two years due to their confidence in the center. Before I went on vacation, the city agreed to increase their financial support to GAC from $20,000 a year to $35,000 a year. I also put in a request to the county before I went on vacation to raise their financial support from $15,000 to $25,000. These additional funds were to purchase software for the software for the routing and scheduling for the transit program and designed to make it easier and more efficient. A few days prior to going on vacation, I requested emergency funds from the county for the roof repair at the center of $3,700. I don’t see where I have lost my effectiveness. I really need to say that I love the center and I have dedicated the last 22-plus years to make it a special place for our seniors, and with the help of my staff and our volunteers, we were successful. As a little girl was walking along the City Market parking lot, she discovered a ring much more valuable than the diamonds embedded in it. After a fun evening at the movies, 5-year-old Sky Pierce walked with her aunt and brother into City Market. As they walked through the parking lot, a glimpse of something shiny caught her eye. Sky had found a diamond wedding ring. She immediately showed it to her aunt, Christina Ireland. Sky was eager to find the ring’s owner. The family went into City Market and left it with customer service. Earlier that day, Joyce Weatherill, 81, had gone shopping at City Market. As she was carrying her bags out to her car, the plastic handles slowly pulled the ring off her finger. Weatherill has worn that ring since she married her husband of 54 years. Once she put her bags away, she noticed the void left by her missing ring. Immediately retracing her steps, she walked back through the parking lot with wide eyes. Once inside, Weatherill told City Market about her missing ring. Without knowing precisely where she lost the ring, she got back in her vehicle and left to retrace other places she had been earlier. After still not finding the ring, Bill Weatherill, Joyce’s husband, called the Daily Record and placed a lost ad. A few weeks later, Joyce

headed to Pueblo for holiday shopping. Before she left, Bill asked her to look for rings she might like so she could replace her lost one. While she was out, Bill received a call from Ireland. Ireland rarely goes through the Lost and Found section of the newspaper. However, the day she was reading through it, the paper happened to fold open to Bill and Joyce’s ad. Seeing that the date the ring was lost matched with the day Sky found one, Christina called Bill to let him know that they left the ring with City Market customer service. Once Joyce returned from Pueblo, Bill asked, “Did you find any rings you liked?” Joyce sadly said she didn’t and that all the ones she found, “seemed too glitzy.” Bill then said, “Well, I got something for ya” and returned her the ring. Joyce was overjoyed to have her ring back. “He gave me exactly what I wanted, and he didn’t even have to pay for it,” Joyce said. On Dec. 14, the Weatherills met with Sky’s family to thank the little girl for finding her ring. Joyce and Bill gave Sky cookies and a teddy bear for being such a great help for returning their ring. Ireland then gave Joyce a dozen roses for her troubles. “Even though I lost my ring, I got to meet a lovely family and become friends with a precious little angel,” Joyce said. Learn to Bowl If you have ever wanted to learn to bowl and have some fun, now is the time! Come learn to bowl! Bowling etiquette and basics will be taught! First camp will run from January 21st through February 25th. The camp will be available for youth and adults. Youth classes will welcome ages 6-16 and begin at 3:30 pm and end at 5:30 pm on Monday nights. Youth classes are also available on Friday night beginning at 3:30 pm until 5:30 pm. Canon City Lanes will also offer classes to adults and seniors. Adults can learn on Friday nights from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Senior classes will be offered from 1 pm until 3:00 pm on Friday afternoon. Registration deadline is January 18th at 5:00 pm. Please register through www.ccrec.org and/or your ActiveNET account.
