Walter Russell Packard January 30, 1937 - August 5, 2018

Walter Russell Packard, 81, of Canon City, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on August 5, 2018. He was born January 30, 1937 to Walter and Laverne Packard (Larkin) in Buena Vista, CO. He graduated from Buena Vista High School in 1955, while attending high school Walt worked for Forman Garage. Upon graduation he joined the Air Force and spent most of his service time in Kansas and Louisiana. After completing 2 years in the service he returned to Canon City, where he then met and married Judith Marie Kearby Laub of Salida in June 1965 and was joined by her two daughters Dianna Marie and Beckey Jo. Walt and Judy later had a son, Bryan Alan. Mr. Packard worked for 25 yrs at the Departement of Corrections in Buena Vista where the family resided. Upon retirement Walt and Judy moved back to Canon City to be close to their 3 children who were living in the area. He is survived by his

wife, Judy of 53 years and children; Dianna (Zeke) VanDyke, Beckey Jo Laub (Robert Little), and Bryan (Lea Raye) Packard. Grandchildren; Sam (Rachael) VanDyke, Jesse (Briana) VanDyke, Todd (Jenna) VanDyke, Justin, Miranda and Wendy Hines, Levi Packard, Dustin (Kayla) McNeill, Jennifer Leverett, Jessica (Zeke) Farber, Crystal (Jeremy) Turner and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings; Joseph Packard and Carol Gibbens all of Buena Vista. A special thanks to Miranda Hines, CNA, for all her loving care of her grandfather and to the folks at Sangre De CRisto for all of the things they did for Walter and the family. Per Walter's request there will be a graveside service August 25th at 11AM at Coaldale Community Cemetery in Coldale, CO. Chaplain Doyle Larkin will be officiating. Mary Louise Mulvaine April 7, 1939 ~ August 2, 2018

Mary Louise Mulvaine, 79, of Canon City, Colorado, passed away on August 2, 2018. Mary was born on April 7, 1939 in Jacksonville, Florida to Clifford King and Mary E. King (neé Lundsford). She grew up in Pensacola, Florida and graduated from Pensacola High School. She married Rodger Mulvaine on April 20, 1963 in Marion, Ohio, and they made Canon City their home in November of 1993. Rodger preceded her in death only six months ago on February 1, 2018. Mary was an avid reader of many subjects. Mary dearly loved her family, which included her cats as well. She was very active in the community as a proud member of The Order of the Eastern Star and the Women's Republican Party. She also worked with victim's advocacy and

loved helping people in time of need. Mary is survived by her children, Kimberly (Mulvaine) Powell, of Pueblo, Todd Allen Mulvaine, of Arvada, and Roger Eric Mulvaine, of Traverse City, Michigan; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister; and numerous extended family members and many friends. Nettie Williams, the Candy Kitchen owner, was ﬁrst introduced to chocolate making by her mother, Magdalen. Nettie Williams helped her mother by bagging and weighing the sweets she created. Magdalen made delicious chocolate confections from 1960 to 1988. Her customers and family gave Magdalen the beloved nickname, Maggie. After her passing, Nettie Williams bought her mother’s original chocolate molds and scales. Inspired to carry on her mother’s trade, Nettie Williams started making chocolates and selling them as specialty items in shops. Because of the demand for Nettie’s chocolates, she opened her own store and named it “Maggie’s Candy Kitchen and Bakery” in honor of her mother. Within the store, there is a display case of Magdalen’s original chocolate bunny molds, tools and photos for all to see and to honor her mother. Maggie’s Candy Kitchen and Bakery is devoted to making sweet treats the old-fashioned way. Currently, there is a wide variety of original homemade fudge ﬂavors. This includes original chocolate, walnut chocolate, strawberry, peanut butter

Loaves & Fishes Ministries of Fremont County is in need of food for their food pantry. The organization is seeing an increase in the number of families seeking food assistance through its pantry and our emergency shelter. “Historically, food donations are low during the summer months and with the increase of need we have had to close our food pantry some days due to not having food in our pantry,” said Traci Lee, warehouse manager. Monthly, Loaves and Fishes distributes more than $25,000 worth of food, most of which is donated by local grocery stores. More than 500 families in Fremont County receive food monthly through the food pantry, and more than 2,000 meals are served monthly in the emergency shelter. Here is what clients say about the support they receive through the food

pantry: “Our food stamps run out at the end of the month and being able to come here helps make ends meet for our family. We love it here. This is great for the community because where we are from they have food banks but nothing like this.” “Our family has to come to Loaves to get help with food because we make $10 too much to be on food stamps. The food box we get each month is a blessing to our family and helps us get by each month.” Loaves & Fishes is asking the community to donate non-perishable food to support the food pantry including canned soups, vegetables, beans, fruit, tomato sauce, tuna, peanut butter and boxed meals. Food donations may dropped off Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Loaves & Fishes, 241 Justice Center Road.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites breaks ground By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Construction of a new $10 million project is expected to begin in the next couple of weeks, and the economic benefit it is projected to bring to the community is significant. Owners Anis and Bina Malkan conducted a ceremonial groundbreaking Friday for the new Holiday Inn Express & Suites at 3271 E. U.S. 50. In addition to the four-story, 90-unit hotel, the project includes an eight-unit apartment to provide stable housing for core staff members. During the ceremony, Mayor Preston Troutman thanked the couple for reinvesting in the community. “We are all very proud of you, and we are glad you are doing this here,” he said. Anis Malkan said the hotel will include 32 suites, six ADA rooms, rooms that have a separate office space and regular rooms, and all units will have either one or two king beds. The first floor solely will be used for the lobby, an indoor pool, hot tub and sauna, a breakfast room, a meeting room, boardrooms, a business center and laundry and kitchen facilities. “This is very close to our heart,” Anis Malkan said. He pointed out that the hotel will be a good source of new revenue for the city. During Monday’s regular city council meeting, Cañon City Economic Development Director Ryan Stevens said the hotel is

expected to employ 25 full-time and 19 part-time employees and produce $564,130 a year in payroll. The hotel also is expected to generate $70,119 per year in city taxes, and if the proposed 5-percent lodging tax passes, this project will contribute about $116,867 annually toward lodging tax funds, Stevens said. “Between the city’s sales tax and lodging tax, this single project could potentially produce $186,986 in taxes, which is comparable to what the entire downtown district produces on an annual basis,” Stevens said. “It is a very large project that has a wide-ranging impact for the community and will help us especially during peak tourism season when hotels are running at 90-95 percent occupancy.” He said having those additional 90 rooms in the market will be signiﬁcant for the tourism industry, and the additional jobs will be a big deal for the community. “The No. 1 priority of this community is to generate jobs and economic growth,” said City Administrator Tony O’Rourke during Monday’s meeting. “This is a great opportunity for that. This is probably the largest project the city has seen in at least a decade.” O’Rourke said based on state studies, 25 cents of every dollar that a visitor spends is on accommodations, and the other 75 cents is spent on food, fuel and shopping. “I think we will see a signiﬁcant multiplier effect through the community when they capture

these guests at this hotel,” O’Rourke said. “It has a dramatic impact on the rest of the local economy.” The Cañon City Council on Monday approved an economic development incentive of $193,356 for the owners, which includes tax reimbursement not to exceed $100,000; waiving the water tap fee for a four-inch water tap in the amount of $85,356; and a $10,000 rebate toward building permit fees, primarily to cover the cost of the building

permit fee for the apartment complex. “We don’t have many opportunities like this where we are getting both a business and somebody willing to address workforce housing, as well,” Stevens said. Anis Malkan, who is a computer engineer, and Bina Malkan, a certiﬁed accountant, ﬁrst opened a “mom and pop” hotel in Lamar in 2003. They purchased the 82unit Best Western six years ago, which is located just west of the

new hotel on U.S. 50. “We are building to operate, we are not building to sell,” Anis Malkan said. “We will make sure no corners are cut and everything throughout the building is robust.” The project is ﬁnanced by Pueblo Bank & Trust, and the construction company is Bedrock CMS and Wright Hospitality. Crews will ofﬁcially break ground in the next couple of weeks, and the hotel is expected to open in the winter of 2019.
