Thomas "Coach" Gribben February 24, 1927 - July 24, 2018

Thomas "Coach" Gribben, 91, passed away July 24, 2018. He was born February 24, 1927 to James and Irene (Peterson) Gribben in Salina, KS. An Army veteran and member of the "Greatest Generation", Tom served his country during WWII, stationed at the Pentagon, Washington, DC. After the war, Tom attended Adams State College in Alamosa. It was there he met the beautiful Barbara Mercure, the love of his life whom he married in 1949. Their journey together lasted 69 years. Armed with a degree in history education, Tom took his first teaching job at Pagosa Springs High School. From there he and Barbara moved to Florence, CO, which became their home. It was here that Tom's education career and family life took off and he became "Coach Tom". During this time he taught history, coached, became the vice-principal and athletic director at Florence High School before ending his career as principal of Penrose School in Penrose, CO. Tom was an active member of the community belonging to St. Benedict's Parish

and the Elk's Club. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Thomas (Lois) Gribben of Pueblo; Janet (Richard) Fischer of Colorado Springs; siblings, Betty Jean Buehler, Jim Gribben, Nancy (Dick) Stanton, Sharlene (Ray) Voelker, Robert (Jeannie) Erickson; grandchildren, Scott (Allison), Stacie (Scottie), Shannah, Jessica (Auggie), Bobby, Kinsey and great-grandchildren, Jake, Olivia and Declan. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kathryn; son, John and brother Kenny. A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 30th at Fremont Middle School, 215 Maple, Florence, CO., with a reception to follow at the Elks Club, In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Coach Tom Gribben Scholarship Fund. Howard Joseph Steiner April 25, 1932 ~ July 25, 2018

Howard Joseph Steiner, 86, passed away peacefully July 25, 2018 at St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City, Colorado. He was born April 25, 1932 in Pierce County, WI to Barney and Marie (Fountain) Steiner. He enlisted in the Army at a young age and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He married Ethel Madeline Dorsey in 1952 in Canon City where they made their home and raised three children; son, Michael, daughter, Lori and son, Mark. Howard was a lifetime member of the Florence Elks Club and had a long career as an employee and later the owner of Persolite Products in Florence, Colorado. He welcomed a hard day's work because he knew no other way, he would not have had it any other way, and it made him happy. When not working, Howard took pleasure in the simple things of life such as fishing, picnics, horseshoes, cards, gardening, roses, cold beer, Green Bay Packer football games and spending time with his family and close friends. He was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, GreatGrandfather and friend

to many. Howard is survived by his sister, Florence Lind of Minnesota; daughter, Lori (Rich) Soden of Canon City; son, Mark (Sue) Steiner of Marana, Arizona; grandsons, Michael "Joe" (Kara) Steiner of Canon City, and Bryson (Mary Beth) Soden of Middletown, Iowa; great-grandsons, Jake Steiner of Golden, Colorado and Josh Steiner of Canon City. He was preceded in death by his father, Barney; stepfather, Mike; mother, Marie; sister, Edna; brother, Walt; half-brother, Jim; half-sister, Beverly; wife, Ethel and son, Michael. Those who knew Howard will remember a loving and caring man of strong values and character and one who was always there for those who needed him. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. January 3, 1926 ~ July 26, 2018 Geraldine Kelley, 92, of Canon City was called home by her Lord on July 26, 2018. Jerry was born January 3, 1926 in Oakland, California to James and Ethel Smith. The family moved to Canon City when she was just a year old. She attended schools in Canon City and graduated from Canon City High School with the class of 1943. She graduated from Gladys Cook College of Beauty in Colorado Springs, and worked with her sister at Dot and Jerry's Curley Top Beauty Salon for several years. A friend she worked with introduced her to a man by the name of Fred Kelley and in 1951 they were married. Together they enjoyed traveling and took many family vacations. She was a charter member of Greydene Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and played the piano for many years. Jerry loved Jesus and it was her desire to serve Him faithfully.

She was a warm and loving wife, mother and friend. She enjoyed singing, playing the piano, xylophone, baking, sewing, crocheting, doing jigsaw puzzles, coloring and working in her yard. She also had a great love for animals. Jerry is survived by her loving daughter, Barbara (Kenneth) Smith of Canon City; sister-in-law, Eva Kelley; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Robert Norman Shoemaker June 4, 1925 ~ July 26, 2018

Robert Norman Shoemaker, 93, passed away peacefully in his home on July 26, 2018. He was born on June 4, 1925 in Lyndall, Utah to Robert and Lena Shoemaker. After high school, Bob joined the Marines and proudly served in World War II. Along with being a cattle rancher, Bob was a Colorado State Representative from 1974 to 1986 and again from 1992-93. He was known for his ability as a key consensus builder, for his quick wit and unique way of speaking. As a legislator, he worked on many issues with special focus on the Department of Corrections. He wrote the statute creating what is now Colorado Correctional Industries. He served on the Colorado State Board of Parole as well as the Colorado Wildlife Commission. He was active and held numerous offices in Fremont County and Colorado Cattlemen's Association. In 1988, Bob and Helen were awarded the National Endowment for Soil and Water Conservation. He was a Mason for more than 50 years. He and Helen were inducted into Pueblo Community College's Hall of Fame in 2013 for their significant contributions to this college. Bob was always interested in his community, state and world events. Bob was outgoing, fun loving and never met a stranger. He was a cowboy who lived by the Code of the West. He loved competitive roping, hunting, and always had at least one

favorite horse. He and Helen danced many a mile to the country music he loved. He was a great artist who created bronze sculptures in a variety of genres, but most were western themes. He loved traveling. He especially loved his trip to Tanzania, Africa at the age of 88. Bob was very proud of his long marriage to Helen, their children and families. He is survived by his wife Helen; the couple celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary in February. She remains in the family home in Garden Park. He is also survived by his four children and their spouses, Wayne (Sonja) Shoemaker, Janice (Jerry) Zeiler, Joan Shoemaker (Robert Taylor), and Kathleen Shoemaker (Bruce Bowman); nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Julia Shoemaker and Doris Shoemaker as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial service, 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 10, 2018, United Presbyterian Church, 701 Macon Avenue, Canon City, Colorado 81212. After working eight years at Royal Gorge Radio, Kari Jacobs assumed the role as general manager on Wednesday. Royal Gorge Radio includes 1400 KRLN on the AM channel and Star Country 104.5 FM. “I think we’ve got a fantastic crew right now, and I look forward to being out more and more in the community,” Jacobs said. Jacobs started working at the front desk at Royal Gorge Radio in August 2010 and moved up the ranks to news director and then most recently programming manager. Moving forward, Jacobs’ wants to offer less satellite and more local programming on the AM channel. “I want to expand the morning show on the AM so it’s a little bit longer and add some cool features from within our community,” she said. “We may possibly add some music during the day, and I would love to ﬁnd some radios to give away to help get people back listening to the radio.” She also will look at adding some talk shows for the people who can’t sleep at night. Jacobs doesn’t foresee any signiﬁcant changes to the FM station. “We’ve got a good crew over there,” she said. “I

She started out as the mid-day disc jockey and weekend reporter. “I have loved radio since I was little,” she said. “I used to listen to Wolfman Jack — it was fun. And I can remember as a teenager making mixed tapes for myself.” In the last eight years, Jacobs has enjoyed working alongside other local media representatives and with the station’s former general manager, Marc Baluch. Unbridled Contractors buys historic hotel for $80K Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

Restoring places and people and reviving small towns is what Unbridled Contractors does, and when company representatives saw the potential in the Hotel St. Cloud, they felt it was a natural fit with their mission. The vacant hotel sold for $80,000 on July 26 to Unbridled Contractors, a branch of its parent company, Emergent, during a live and online auction hosted by Top Dollar Realty & Auction, LLC. The bidding was between two on-site individuals and three online bidders from Colorado, California and New York. Several downtown business owners attended the auction and were quick to congratulate the new owners, many thanking them for stepping in to revive the historic structure. “We want to restore people and places, that’s kind of the mantra of what we do,” said Jonathan Wield, the buying representative for the company’s owner, Stan Bullis. “Restoration has been in the heart of Stan.” Bullis and many of the company’s employees live in Elbert County, and they have offices in Denver, as well. “That’s where Stan’s heart for restoring Main Street in small towns comes from,” said Jesie McElroy, the project manager representing Unbridled Contractors. “He’s a small-town guy.” Wield said “redemptification” is the impetus behind the St. Cloud Hotel project. “We can redeem places, so we saw this is a natural fit: you’ve got a restaurant and bar, so you can reach out to locals, and you’ve got hotel rooms, so you can reach out to people coming through town and give them a great experience,” he said. Wield said the parent company’s business model is that 20 percent of the profits from its 16 companies is given back to charity every year. “Across the 16 com-

panies, we gave away $720,000 this year, which is our best year yet,” he said. “Stan also ends up giving a lot of any profit distributions he gets back into next-generation entrepreneurs, which is why I am here and not him, he wants to raise up millennial entrepreneurs who can run businesses when he’s gone.” He said the company looks forward to getting to know the Cañon City community and becoming a part of it. “We want to be a blessing to the community,” Wield said. “Part of restoring people and places is that we have an impact. We own the corner, but we want to bless the street.” The first historic preservation project the company took on was the Grant Street Mansion located at 1115 Grant St. in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Denver. The mansion was built in 1892 and was purchased by Unbridled Holdings in 2014. McElroy said there is still a lot of research and planning that need to be done before any specific plans are announced for the Hotel St. Cloud, but restoring 100-year old buildings for the next 100 years is what the company is all about. “The history is really important to us, and it’s important to the community, and it’s our heart to preserve it,” she said. “Our heart is to obtain (historic buildings), preserve them, and then see them stay preserved.” What intrigued the group most about St. Cloud was its address and location. “We have a heart for Main Street properties and preserving the story and history behind the Main Street,” McElroy said. “Seventh is an important, meaningful address for us, so the corner of Seventh and Main was really interesting. It’s been our longtime dream to own a hotel.” She plans to work with the Historical Society and History Colorado to make sure the restoration project is done well. The nonprofit Future of

Yesterday Foundation announced in September 2014 its intent to raise $3 million to fully restore the hotel back to its 1890 grandeur, but efforts to raise funds for its restoration had been slow going. As of July 2017, the FOY had successfully garnered nearly $350,000 in grants from the Colorado State Historical Fund that went toward roof rehabilitation, parapet repair and foundation investigation and stabilization. The FOY also had contributed more than $150,000 in matching funds toward the project. FOYboard president Erin Mahoney said the foundation will continue its work in other communities where it already has been operating. She said the foundation was not tied to the St. Cloud, it simply was one of its projects. The closing on the sale of the hotel is expected to take place by the end of August.
