Barbara Jane Brown November 7, 1929 ~ June 25, 2018

Barbara Jane (Charles) Brown, 88, of Canon City, Colorado passed away June 25, 2018. She was born to the late Clarence Charles and Maude (Foley) Charles November 7, 1929. She was a graduate of Center, Colorado High School before moving to Canon City with her late husband Clarence Roland Brown. She was a homemaker noted for her remarkable cooking and ensuring that the family's appearance and house sparkled. She was a nurse working for numerous doctors and aiding the elderly around the neighborhood. She never asked for anything in return. Barbara enjoyed dancing, crafts, camping, fishing, and later in life talking to Sharon everyday on the telephone. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her children, Terry (Juliet)

Brown of Canon City, Colorado and Sharon (Curt) Crum of Tucson, Arizona; four grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, Kenneth (Grace) Charles. Encel "Woody" Harwood November 17, 1930 - June 29, 2018

Encel "Woody" Harwood, 87, passed away June 29, 2018. He was born November 17, 1930 to Tanner and Edith (Walthall) Harwood in New Underwood, SD. Survived by his wife Sheila (Wollman) Harwood; children, Johnnie (Margo) Harwood of Washington state, Donna (Ray) Wilcox of Colorado Springs, step-children, John Wollman, Walter (Shelli) Wollman, Dennis Wollman, all of Florence, Cathy (Steve) Jacoby of Texas, Cheri Burnett and Tammy Burnett of California; 22 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, steph-daughter, Adelle

Fox; grandson, Charles Fox and son Lester Harwood, who preceded him just three weeks ago. Woody, spent many years working as the produce manager at Super Foods in Florence. A hardworking and self-reliant man, he opened his own produce stand; H&H Farms of Florence, which he operated with his wife and family until his retirement. October 19, 1943 - June 24, 2018 Loa Kennedy, born on October 19, 1943 in Pueblo, Colorado, to the late Kathryn Esther White and the late Sidney Crain, passed away at age 74 on June 24, 2018 in Canon City, Colorado. Loa was the loving wife of the late Lee Rooks. She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Ethel Crain; stepfather, Jerry White; son, Lenard Kennedy; and brother, Sidney Crain. Loa is survived by her sons, Bobby Rooks, Ronald Kennedy, Gary

Kennedy, and Rodney Dean Kennedy; stepsons, Jimmy Rooks and David Rooks; stepdaughter Lisa Cook; sisters, Linda Cornwell and Corleen Crain; many grandchildren and several great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; many great nieces and great nephews. Donia Albanie Knapp April 28, 1953 - July 4, 2018

Donia Albanie Knapp was born in Pittsburg, California on April 28, 1953 to Donald Eugene Stevenson and Olga Thais (Azarcon) Stevenson and passed away with family and friends by her side on July 4, 2018 at the age of 65. Donia is survived by her mother Olga Stevenson, brother Guy and Elizabeth (wife) Stevenson, and half-sister Stephenie and Chris (husband) Going; her children Taylor Knapp and Emily Herrmann (fiancé), Lacey and Michael (husband) Albrecht, and Austen and Jenna (wife) Knapp; her grandchildren Kaiden and Paxton Albrecht; and her dog Sadie. She was preceded in death by her father, Donald Eugene Stevenson. Donia graduated from Crowley County High School in Ordway, Colorado in 1971. She attended the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon before moving to Rocky Ford, CO where she married John Knapp and worked and volunteered with many local small businesses and community organizations. Donia was a devoted mother of three while later attending the University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo, CO where she graduated with a BA in Accounting. After graduation she worked as an independent travel agent and started her own accounting business as a licensed Certified Public Accountant. Donia later settled in Canon City, CO where she dedicated herself for 20+ more years as a CPA with The Mueller Companies before retiring in 2015. Donia enjoyed spending her free time on the water. Whether it be at the ocean or the lake, as long as Donia was near or on the water, she was happy. She owned a number of different types and sizes of boats over the years and if she couldn't be found on them, her kayak or paddle board were the next safe bet. When not on the water, Donia found much

pleasure gardening, cooking and preserving/ canning food, loving on animals, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren. In more recent years, Donia's love for gardening found her volunteering at many local community gardens and assisting with the establishment of the Canon City growers CO-OP where she held the treasurer position and was a strong believer in the many benefits of small community organic farming. In April of 2017, Donia was diagnosed with Stage-IV Lung Cancer and shortly after moved to Colorado Springs, CO to be closer to family and treatment. Donia took on cancer with the same determination as she did most other things in life. Her drive to succeed took her through two separate trial cancer treatment drugs not yet approved by the FDA, multiple rounds of radiation, two different chemotherapy cycles, and much more during her 15-month fight with cancer. At her request, the family will be holding a celebration of Donia's life at the home of Lacey (daughter) and Michael Albrecht on Saturday, August 25, 2018 located at 29841 McMeekan Road in Pueblo, CO 81006. Lylia Mae Towell Lylia Mae Towell was welcomed home to be with the Lord on June 30, 2018. Though this saddened all of us who knew her, we remember the life that she led and know full well that she is now safe and whole, living it up in heaven. Lylia was a delightful, loving person who had many great adventures during her lifetime. No one was a stranger to Lylia and one of her greatest pleasures was visiting with people, friends and especially her family; her friends and family were everything to her. Lylia was born in Cortez, New Mexico to Betty and Ralph Dufur. She had many, many stories that she related to us all of her time there. Lylia moved to the Canon City area where most of her immediate family live, enjoying fully the time she spent with them. Lylia traveled around the state and country most recently to the eastern US with her host family. Lylia loved collecting angels, bears and information that she gathered through classes and other learning experiences.

Lylia was an avid volunteer throughout our community as she loved to give back. Lylia was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Betty Dufur, her sister Kay Roberts and brother-in-law Gary Roberts. She leaves behind her brother Jack (Esparanza) Dufur, her sister Faye Roberts, her brother-in-law Ron Roberts, her niece Toni (Tony) Langford, her aunt Jeanie Gafford, Jim and Gay Alexander, Leroy and Betty Hartley as well as many, many nieces and nephews. In addition she leaves behind her host family, Bob and Marilyn, Jessie, Cody, Preston and Trent. Lylia touched many hearts within her lifetime, if we have forgotten anyone's name, please be assured that you were remembered by Lylia and made her life richer. A celebration of Lylia's life will be held on Thursday July 5, 2018 at the Healing Waters Church located at 614 S 4th St, Cañon City, CO, at 11:00 AM. Gerald Benjamin Carr January 10, 1942 - July 9, 2018

Gerald Benjamin Carr, age 76, of Milledgeville, passed away Monday, July 9, 2018. He was born in Lamar, Colorado on January 10, 1942 to the late Gerald Carr and the late Marjorie Hollingsworth Carr. Mr. Carr lived most of his life in Rock Springs, Wyoming. He retired from Law Enforcement, having been a Canon City Police Officer, as well as East Canon City Marhsall. Gerald spent time as a Coal Miner, and most recently had been a Truck Driver. Mr. Carr was a Veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force. Virgil "Mack" McCabe August 10, 1936 - June 19, 2018

Virgil "Mack" McCabe, was born in Nebraska in 1936. Eldest son to Harold and Beatrice McCabe, brother to Earl and Jack. Serving as a United States Marine made an indelible impact on Mack's life and created a deep devotion to his country. Other strong influences in Mack's life were: his time spent living in Germany, falling in love with opera and edelweiss; attending ASU, where he also worked on the police force; years spent in CA as a Director for the division of Mattel Toys that made "Hot Wheels"; and as a realtor/ appraiser in AZ, where he was able to work in the open range enjoying the rugged west that called to his cowboy at heart. Mack married twice, first to Vera Heil in 1955, daughters Vicky Weiss and Christa Galindo. Then to Louann Whitworth in 1968, daughter Susan Grecian, son-in-law Kevin. Mack had a way of bringing ease to any situation with his generous, heart-warming laugh. He enjoyed long drives and amazing views, music fed his soul, as did a seaside meal of a

dozen Blue-Point oysters with a Grey Goose cocktail on the rocks, a horseback ride and hours with a fishing pole. Everyone who knew Mack would attest to his infallible attention to detail, logging purchases and activities daily with a sharpness which reflected his zest to harness and record these facts throughout his life . Of all the roles Mack played in life, Grandpa was his favorite and the one he did the best. His granddaughters, Sydney and Devyn, simply adore him. The man could wrap a gift as though it were ready to ship to another planet and made them feel as though they were the most important gifts on this one. There will be no replacement for the love and devotion felt by his family, but we are overflowing with the adoration and kindness he left with us. Briefly Changes coming for motor vehicles Residents may experience longer wait times than normal in the Motor Vehicle Department this summer. The State of Colorado is upgrading all ofﬁces with new technology. The staff will be training throughout the summer to learn the new system. The department will make every effort possible to expedite visits but asks residents to take advantage of the online renewal services, drop boxes and self-service kiosk at these times. The Motor Vehicle Department will be closed and no in-person or online services will be available from Aug. 1 to 5 as the staff moves over to the new system. The new system is going to be much more functional and efﬁcient and the staff is excited to announce new online services will be available starting Aug. 6.

Code enforcement will begin enforcing new trash ordinance On May 21, the Cañon City Council passed an ordinance pertaining to trash disposal citywide and modiﬁed residential and commercial regulations. The ordinance became effective on May 26. Code Enforcement issued warnings throughout June for those not in compliance, in order to provide citizens a chance to become familiar with and in compliance with the new regulations. Notiﬁcation of the regulations were also provided on the city website and on social media. Code enforcement will now begin enforcing the new regulations. The changes primarily focus on permitted:

• Trash Containers (residential)can be up to two cubic yards. • Place of Storage (residential and commercial) - dumpsters must be behind the front façade of a building, or along side a fence or building if stored in an alleyway. • Place of Collection (residential and commercial) - may be placed in the street against the curb, on private property near the sidewalk, or against a fence/building if in an alleyway. Placement must not impede the ﬂow of vehicles or pedestrian movement. Construction dumpsters placed on public property require a permit with the City Engineer. Construction dumpsters placed on private

property do not need a permit. Dumpsters must be emptied or removed within 24 hours after being full. Persons needing an exemption from the requirements based on 1) physical ability to move trash receptacle or 2) unique property conditions, may contact Code Enforcement at City Hall and ﬁll out an application. Exemption does not permit place of storage on public property. Joslynn Carochi — “This experience really allowed me to see how any team, regardless of size or location, can really do something amazing when they pull together.” Emily S. Nguyen —”My team and I worked extremely hard to make it to this point, and I’m very proud of them. This experience granted us the chance to grow as a team and as individuals — that alone is the best award we could receive.” Retired Colonel Robert Koch, who coaches the academic team, said he was extremely pleased with the team’s effort. “This was an amazing experience for the kids,” Koch said. “We were the only school from Colorado to make it to the playoff round. I am very proud of these cadets, their professionalism, academic knowledge reﬂected on themselves our school and community. It was truly an honor to be part of this with them.”

Shopper collecting donations for firefighters With several wildfires burning across Colorado, the Cañon City Shopper is collecting donations to aid the hundreds of firefighters battling those fires.
