Obituaries Paul Gallardo, Sr.

March 26, 1924 - June 20, 2018 Paul Gallardo, Sr., of Florence, Colorado, passed away on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, at St. Thomas More Hospital at the age of 94. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend to all who knew and loved him. Mr. Gallardo was born on March 26, 1924, in Hastings, CO, to the late Feliciano and Cirila Gallardo. He worked for the Colorado Civilian Conservation Corps and served his country as a Private First Class in the 351st Infantry Regiment in the US Army from 1944 to 1945. He helped direct construction of the Cheyenne Mountain Complex where the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) was headquartered. Paul then worked for the Colorado Department of Corrections where he retired after twenty-two years of service. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beatrice, his son, Paul Gallardo, Jr., his daughter, Antoinette G. Holcomb, his grandson, Paul Brandon Gallardo, and his ten siblings Maggie Hernandez, Tomasita Lave, Jesus Gallardo, Mike Gallardo, Mary Hernandez, Lupe

Martinez, Grace Lopez, Annie Lopez, Eva Jimenez, and Joe Martinez, Jr. He is survived by his son, Dennis Gallardo of Florence, his two grandsons, Steve Welch (Karen) of Pulaski, TN, and Donovan Gallardo (Cindy ) of Erie, CO, and his two granddaughters, Tina Dancer (Steven) of Madison, MS, and Tonya Sweeney (Rush) of Brandon, MS. He is also survived by eight great grandchildren, one great-great grandson and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Dennis Gallardo, Steve Welch, Steven Dancer, Rush Sweeney, Donovan Gallardo, Adolph Gallardo. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Vendetti, and Michael Vigil. The Funeral Mass officiated by Father John Farley will be Thursday, June 28, 2018, at 10:00 am at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Florence, CO. A Rosary Service will be held preceding the Mass at 9:30 am. Burial to follow at Union Highland Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Harwood Funeral Home. Online condolences at Harwoodfunerals.com.

Danny Lee Nichols 1957 - 2018

Danny Lee Nichols was born October 3, 1957, in Cañon City, Fremont County, Colorado to Jack Kenneth Nichols and Norma Louise (Riddle) Nichols. He was the second of two children. He attended the Cañon City school systems and graduated from Cañon City High School in 1976. His father retired from the Cañon City Fire Department in 1977 and shortly after retiring, the entire family moved to rural Custer County. Danny lived and worked throughout Custer County until his death. He had great work ethics and labored in various construction occupations for years. He was meticulous and a perfectionist. All of the projects that he was involved in with looked good and functioned well. He loved the great

outdoors and the solitude of the mountains. He never married. He became a Christian as a teenager and was a member of the Church of Christ in Cañon City, CO. He is survived by one brother, Gary (Andrea) Nichols of Wetmore, CO; one nephew, Jack Nichols of Charleston, SC; one niece, Charmayne (Bryan) Sandoval of Cañon City, CO; and one great-nephew, Cole Sandoval of Cañon City, CO. He is preceded in death by both parents. A memorial service will be held at 10 am, Saturday July 7, 2018, at the Cañon City Church of Christ, 1718 Franklin Avenue, Cañon City, CO. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Church of Christ, Cañon City, CO, in the name of Danny Nichols.

Leona Johanna Jindra March 17, 1924 ~ June 20, 2018

Leona Johanna Jindra, 94, passed away from this world, June 20th, 2018, at Hildebrand Care Center in Canon City, Colorado. Leona was born March 17, 1924 on her aunt's farm in Lastrup, MN. Leona will always be remembered as a gracious, kind, and fun lady. Leona enjoyed traveling, dancing, crocheting, and knitting. Leona and George were married shortly after WWII and lived in several places to include Germany while George was serving in the United States Army. While they were stationed in Colorado Springs at 'Camp Carson', Leona said, "This is where I want to live". Leona loved Colorado. Leona was the manager of Frontier Stamps Redemption Center in Colorado Springs for many years. Leona is survived by her daughter, Linda (James) Bacchus, of Colorado

Springs, Colorado; son, Jeffery (Maria) Jindra, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three grandchildren, Christine Bacchus of Oakland, California, Cassie(Dan) Shute of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Dodd Jindra of Colorado Springs, Colorado and one great-granddaughter, Crystal, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Helen Angeline (Schneider) Walter April 20, 1936 - June 14, 2018

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother & Grandmother Helen Angeline Walter, who went home to be with the Lord on June 14, 2018 in Aurora, Colorado. Helen was born in Selfridge, North Dakota on April 20, 1936, she was the Second of Seven children born to her parents Jacob & Angeline Schneider. Helen was a Beautician for over 22 years, she enjoyed reading, spending time with her Grandchildren, hosting family and friends, and playing cards. Peggy Jean MacPherson 1937 - 2018

Peggy Jean Calhoun MacPherson was born on January 29th, 1937 and passed away on June 18th, 2018. She was born the third oldest of eleven children to Thomas Franklin Calhoun and Ella Jean Howard Calhoun in McKinney, Texas. As a young child, she travelled across this country with her parents and siblings following her father's job as an electrician installing high voltage transmission lines. In 1945 her family settled in Canon City, Colorado where she graduated high school. Peggy later married and had three children. In 1970, she moved to Dallas, Texas where she worked and raised her children. She retired from a full-time position at PHH Home equity in 1998 but continued working part-time for her brother Tom Calhoun, owner of Cal-Tex Plumbing. In 2014 she sold her house in Garland, Texas and moved to Katy, Texas. She is survived by her sons Bruce MacPherson and wife Patricia of Katy, Texas, Greg MacPherson and wife Rita Jean (Jeannie) of Forney, Texas, and daughter Kathryn

Laffiteau of Irving, Texas. Peggy Jean MacPherson adored her five grandchildren, Bruce Alan, Thomas, Kimberly, Melissa, Scott; and two great-grandchildren, Caleb, 10, and Kenneth, 7 months. Peggy is also survived by her sister Lynette Calhoun Sawyer, brothers Don Calhoun and wife Carolyn, C. Nolan Calhoun and wife Judy, Stephen Calhoun and wife Sylvia, all of Colorado; and brothers Ben Calhoun and Tom Calhoun, wife Lisa, of Texas, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents and four siblings, Delores, Louise, Mary, and Paul. Peggy Jean Calhoun MacPherson enjoyed reading, classical music, golf, and football. She loved the Dallas theater and attended several Super Bowls with her sister. Peggy's love and compassion for her family and friends will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity. A memorial service will be held in Dallas, Texas on July 7th.

Donald D. Owens Sr. March 10, 1948 - June 21, 2018

Donald DeWayne Owens Sr., 70, of Colorado Springs went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 21, 2018. Don was born on March 10, 1948, in Stratton, Nebraska to Samuel A. Owens and Maudie May (Weekley) Owens. He was a dog lover and his love for his family was evident in every decision he made. He is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel A. Owens and May Owens: his brothers, Jim Owens and Marvin (Leona) Owens and his sister Marjorie Koetter. Donald is survived by his wife Sherry (Brand) Owens; his son Donald (Jodie) Owens and

Sign name to Royal Gorge Bridge plank

Sign your name to an actual Royal Gorge Bridge plank that will be installed on North America’s highest suspension bridge in spring 2019 to commemorate the bridge’s 90th Anniversary. Celebrate the Fourth in Florence

Florence has a number of ways to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday, including the annual Wet and Dry Parade. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at John C. Fremont Library, 130 Church Ave. The dry section of the parade runs from the library to Pikes Peak Avenue and the wet portion will run from Pikes Peak to Petroleum avenues. The public can bring water guns, but no water balloons. Anyone can enter the parade for $10 and choose to stay in the dry section or brave both the dry and wet section. Also July 4, the Florence Fire Protection District will host a pancake breakfast by donation at 7 a.m. Mayor Keith Ore is sponsoring a free swim day on the Fourth at the Florence Swimming Pool for children. After the parade, festivities will continue at Pioneer Park with Abynormil performing music at 11 a.m. The Rotary Duck Derby sponsored by Cañon City and Florence Rotary begins at 12:30 p.m. Ducks are $5. Each ducky is labeled with a number that corresponds with a ticket number. The ducks will be released into the ditch near Pioneer Park. The first five ducks through the wire fence “funnel” will win cash prizes. No. 1 wins $1,000, No. 2 wins $500, No. 3 wins $250, No. 4 wins $100 and No. 5 wins $50. The top five ticket purchasers need not be present to win. At 6 p.m., The Richard Pena Band will perform. And then at dusk, a fireworks show will be displayed. The best locations to view the show will be Pioneer Park and Florence High School.

The Legion Riders were formed to promote the aims and purposes of the American Legion as a family oriented motorcycling to active members of the American Legion, The American Legion Auxiliary and The Sons of

The American Legion. Additionally, the Legion Riders Program aim is to support Veterans and keep alive the memory of our POW/MIAS, promote motorcycle safety, community service projects and support other motorcycle organizations. The group is seeking current and new American Legion members who enjoy riding and want to support our mission of service and remembrance. Legion Riders joining before Jan. 24,

2019, will be recognized as a Charter Member and have the privilege of building this program. In the coming months, there will be rides and events planned. The July 4 holiday is here and the Pike and San Isabel National Forests, Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands (PSICC) want visitors to enjoy their public lands. While recreating, be extremely careful in these dangerous wildfire conditions. Forest officials are reminding everyone that fire restrictions are in place on the Leadville, Salida, San Carlos, South Platte, South Park and Pikes Peak Ranger Districts. Having a campfire in an area under fire restrictions is a violation punishable by a fine of up to $5,000, imprisonment of not more than six months, or both. Individuals can also be held responsible for the costs of suppressing a wildfire if it is caused by their actions. Igniting fireworks is always illegal on National Forest System Lands. Simply possessing fireworks can result in citations with significant fines and penalties. “We want visitors to be aware of the rules, stay safe with fire and have fun this Holiday. Preventing human caused fires is a top priority,” said Bill King, Forest Fire Management Officer. Always “Know-Before-You-Go” by checking with the local Ranger District and Sheriff Department to understand fire restrictions and the responsibility of fire safety. The Lucky Stop, which is owned and operated by Bert and Shawn Borrego, has relocated to 513 Main St., next to Pizza Madness. The store opened in September 2013 on Fourth Street, but after almost ﬁve years at that location, the owners decided they wanted to relocate. “We really wanted to be a part of Main Street and needed a bigger location to

expand in merchandise,” Shawn Borrego said. “We will continue to carry purses, wallets and jewelry and are expanding the women’s clothing on the boutique side of the store. IT IS TIME TO BE SERIOUS AND IT IS TIME FOR HARD DECISIONS With the primary election now over and behind us, it is time for the citizens of Fremont County to take a very SERIOUS look at the top two people running for the sheriff’s position. I am JAMES BOYD CANTERBURY, Independent Candidate for Fremont County Sheriff. Since starting my campaign, I have said I would be honest, transparent, and accountable to you the people, so you need to know the facts. Twenty-one years ago, I was arrested in Rifle Colorado because I went into a drug house full of dealers and took two 17-year-old girls out of that house. I was found NOT GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS, which entitles me to run for your sheriff today. Then in 2005, I purchased and invested in the Broken Spoke in Penrose where we were forced to file bankruptcy. We were the fourth owners at that time and all had failed at this business. There were two more owners after us who failed as well. You may be asking yourself, “WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?” I am telling you this because I believe you should know. I will be honest and accountable to you the people and, as your Sheriff, I will always be honest and accountable to you. Being an Independent Candidate, I am not beholden to any political party and thus I do not bring political baggage to the position of sheriff. How important is this to the citizens of Fremont County? Let’s look at the last few years with the Party in charge of the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office. • Crime rate is rising, including homicides with several open homicide investigations going on now. • No confidence in the Sheriff’s Office due to issues with key employees and their illegal actions. Detective Dodd is a prime example. • Lack of prosecution or implementing plea bargaining agreements without consulting with victims of the crime. • Lack of action or investigation for all drug activities within the county, including both in the city and county areas. • Lack of accountability. • Lack of transparency within the Sheriff’s Office and the DA’s Office. • Lack of cooperation with agencies outside of Fremont County. This list can go on and on. You the citizen know the issues and concerns as well as I do. I am the only candidate for sheriff that has had his plans and agenda in place for how I will improve these situations. I can get the Sheriff’s Office back to where it needs to be – and to where the citizens of Fremont County deserve it to be. My plan has been out there for the public to see and learn about since the start of my campaign. I will not change my strategies for solving these problems just to get votes. Nor will I promise people jobs just to get them on my side. These issues are too important and serious to be indecisive or changing in mid-stream just to get into office. The citizens of Fremont County deserve and need much more. Another important election question is this: How well does your candidate for Sheriff know this county? I mean the county outside of the city areas. I am talking about Red Rocks area, Garden Park area, all the communities and areas west on US 50, north on Highway 9, south on County Road 143 and south off Highways 67 and 69. The County areas have a different demographic than the cities. They have different issues, concerns, worries. As your candidate who was born, raised and living in Fremont County area throughout my life, I know and understand all this. Changes need to be made in the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff and his staff are servants of the people of Fremont County. I will make sure that this happens. I will see that you have firm, fair and consistent law enforcement. Criminals do not care where you live, what gender you are, what your origin is or how much money you have or make. Law enforcement should not care either. I will ensure that ALL citizens will be treated equally and with respect. We do not need another 4 years of politics as usual in this county.
