Obituaries Shawn Anthony DeVore October 5, 1968 ~ June 11, 2018

On June 11th, 2018 Shawn Anthony DeVore, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family at the age of 49. He was a loving son, brother, husband, uncle, and father that will be greatly missed. Shawn was born on October 5th, 1968 in Denver, Colorado and was adopted by Ennis and Dennis DeVore when he was 6 weeks old. He then went on to drive stockcars, which he enjoyed doing until his retirement from racing. Shawn married the love of his life, Cheryl Lynn Fellhauer, on October 22rd, 1994 and they went on to have three daughters. He was also a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). In 1999, Shawn began working at Litz Auto Supply, where he continued to work until his passing. He will be greatly missed by his coworkers and customers. Family meant everything to him; he adored his girls and would do anything for them. His devotion for

family carried him through life. Shawn was an avid history buff, especially pertaining to war. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR, working on cars, fishing, and going to the shooting range with his family. Shawn is survived by his wife of 23 years, Cheryl; his daughters, Amanda (Shawn Evans), Lisa, and Kristy; his mother, Ennis; brother, Chad; niece, Juleah; by his in-laws, Grant, Carol, and Theresa Fellhauer, and many others. Shawn will be joining many loved ones in the afterlife, including his grandparents, Lacey and Omer DeVore, Alice and Dolph Aggson; his father, Dennis; and his infant sister, Shellie. Celebration of Life, 1pm-4pm at Rudd Park, July 7, 2018. All are welcome but please no alcohol. Donations may be made to the National Association of Gun Rights (NAGR) or the Fallen Hero's Fund. September 23, 1935 ~ June 12, 2018 Delores Mae Downs, 82, of Canon City, passed away June 12, 2018. She was born September 23, 1935 in Boone, Colorado to Tommie and Geneva (Dragoo) Gosage, who preceded her in death. Delores is survived by her husband, Ronald Downs; children, Jason Downs, Rustan Adams, Rhonda Gay Pryde, Rhoda Henderson; nine

Clara Belle (Becky) Hamilton 01/14/1931 ~ 06/08/2018

Clara Belle (Becky) Hamilton was born on January 14, 1931, in Dodge City, Kansas to Aaron andMattie Beck. She moved to LaJunta, CO., at the age of one and graduated from LaJunta High School in 1948. She married Thomas Lee Hamilton Sr. on August 22, 1948, in Rocky Ford CO. There they farmed and she taught Head Start for many years. They moved to Canon City in 1973, and Becky worked

at Lincoln Elementary until 1983. Becky was a faithful member of the Church of Christ since 1948. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and husband. She is survived by five children, Linda (Dennis), Judy (Rick), Nancy (Mike), Tom (Molly), and Rusty; 13 grandchildren; and 31 great grandchildren. Services will be held at Church of Christ Wednesday, June 13th at 10:00 am.

Kathleen Rose (Wilcox) Jones 08-28-1955 ~ 06-12-2018

Kathleen Rose (Wilcox) Jones passed away on June 12, 2018. Kathleen was born on August 28th 1955. She was described as an intelligent quiet child with a sweet smile. Her quiet way didn't last long! She met Elmer John Jones who was definitely meant for her. They married on November 27, 1976. It was the beginning of a beautiful marriage of 41 years. Kathy wouldn't let life get her down despite enormous challenges from an accident on the Autobahn leaving her legally blind. Kathy's passion for teaching and history had led her to a Master's Degree in Library Science; she used this to work with a multitude of children including on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico. Kathy's three children have always been the joy of her life; grandchildren have been her greatest blessing. Kathy never knew a stranger or

turned away a person in need, showing her love for Christ in all of her deeds. Her favorite scripture was Romans 8:28. She will be dearly missed by all who have had the honor of having known her. Kathy is survived by her husband John, her 3 children Andrew(Amanda) parents of Mattie and Amaryllis, Jessica (Adam) and Diana, her mother Garnet, and her sisters Debbie, Katrina, Francie, Brother Lyle and their families. She was preceded in death by her father Chuck. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be sent to Kathy's beloved Boulder Street Church, or new Children's Christian books may be donated at the service. Service will be held Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 1:00 pm, Boulder Street Church 828 E. Boulder Street, Colorado Springs, CO.

Louis Duane Keys May 22, 1938 - June 13, 2018

Louis Duane Keys, 80, passed away June 13, 2018. Survived by wife of 57 years, Gladys Keys; children, Steven (Heikei Kovacich) Keys and Calvin (Sherri) Keys of Pueblo; brother, Ferrel (Bobbi) Keys of Rye; grandchildren Travis Keys, Shelbie (Luke) Prescia, Trenton, Seth and Troy Keys; great-grandchildren, Ellah, Stetson and Oaklie Belle Prescia. Preceded in death by parents, Delbert and Ellen Keys; sister Reba (Phil) Larson and brother Jerrel Keys. Duane was born on May 22, 1938, in Chandler, Oklahoma where he spent much of his childhood, until the family moved to Colorado; settling in

Canon City. He and Gladys were married in 1960, and he enlisted in the US Army in 1961. After a two-year term, they moved to Pueblo where he returned to work at the CF&I Steel Mill. In 1984, he retired from "the mill" and worked for Mesa Hardware for the next 20 years. Duane loved hunting, fishing, race cars and sports. He will forever be remembered as a supportive and caring husband, father and grandfather. Viewing, 4 to 6p.m. Friday, June 15. Alden "Audie" Piner May 15, 1963 - June 12, 2018

Alden "Audie" Roe Piner, 55, passed away at his home with his loving family by his side. He was born May 15, 1963 to Allen and Ann (Cook) Piner in Pueblo, CO. Audie married Kimberly Petersen, the love of his life and his greatest supporter. Audie was a long-haul truck driver by profession, but spent his free time living life to the fullest. When he wasn't working, Audie would go to the mountains to hunt, fish and gold panning. After a major accident, Audie discovered he was suffering from ALS and rather than letting it get him down, he fought to live the best life possible. Though he was in pain, Audie, a Navy veteran, never

complained and instead served as an example to everyone that knew him. A celebration of his life will be held for family and friends at a future date. Alden is survived by his wife Kimberly; daughter, Heather Petersen; grandson, Schuyler Petersen; parents Allen and Ann Piner; sister Alinda Piner; and a lifetime of close friends and extended family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Paralyzed Veterans of America, Rocky Mountain Chapter of the ALSA, or hospice of donor's choice. Linda M. (Kandrak) Swift June 4, 1938 - June 11, 2018

Linda was born on June 4, 1938 in New Haven, CT, to Alice M. (Stacey) Kandrak and Andrew Peter Kandrak, Sr. Following a prolonged illness, Linda passed away in Denver on June 11, 2018. Linda began working in the Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph business office in Canon City in 1959. After a satisfying and successful career she retired from the marketing department of the corporate office of USWest in Denver in the late 1980's. She then realized her dream of moving closer to her beloved Sangre de Cristo Mountains where she continued working part-time and volunteering in numerous public and community offices in Custer County. Both the mountains and the oceans were integral parts of Linda's life. She was a Master Gardener and kept busy

with crafts in her spare time. She loved friends and family activities, traveling, music and learning. Linda was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert E. Swift, her parents, and her brother Andrew Peter Kandrak, Jr. She is survived by her son Michael Swift; her daughter Stacy (Kenneth) Dorman; her sister Janet Reither; her grandchildren Rodger, Todd, and Crystal; five great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins. A celebration of Linda's life will take place on June 30, 2018 at 2 PM at the American Legion Post 1, 5400 E. Yale in Denver, Co. Yard sale to benefit medical expenses for Root family A yard sale June 29-30 will beneﬁt the Root family with medical expenses after an upcoming kidney transplant for their two sons. Christopher Root, 10, and Austin Root, 9, will be added to the active transplant list in the coming weeks. The boys’ older brother, Marcus, 12, received a kidney transplant in June 2016 at Denver Children’s Hospital. All three boys have a rare genetic disease, cystinosis. The average life of a child with cystinosis who has never had a transplant is 14 Christopher Root years. According to cystinosis.org: “Cystinosis is a rare disease that is typically diagnosed prior to age 2. Cystinosis is a genetic metabolic disease that causes an amino acid, cystine, to accumulate in various organs of the body. Pay it Forward Smile Transformation winner announced Dr. Kimra Hall & Associates Family Dental announced that Shawn Talay as the winner of the Smile Transformation, a free custom denture giveaway. Dr. Hall said that her team received nominations for 130 well-deserving individuals throughout Fremont County. Talay is a young man who resides in Canon City, provides hospitable service to the patrons of a local restaurant and works other odd jobs to make ends meet. Talary received nominations from numerous individuals who have been impacted by his attitude of gratitude, random acts of kindness, generosity and display of genuine concern for others. Dr. Hall said, “It’s people like Shawn that make our community such a great place to live and raise our families. Thankyou Shawn.” Dr. Hall also expressed that many are unaware of the organizations that either pay for dental treatment fully or offer ﬁnancial assistance. In her experience, she has seen that many do not seek dental treatment due to not having dental insurance that is why she now offers an in-house discount plan to accommodate this need. She further said that studies have shown that maintaining good oral health through regular dental checkups is an important part of whole body health. Dr. Hall said her and her staff would also like to thank their great community for the overwhelming response to their call to pay it forward nominations.

Student-athletes take advantage of St. Thomas More’s free exams Chris Graham The Daily Record More than 200 student-athletes were examined Wednesday at St. Thomas More Hospital as the hospital offered free physicals. “It is about promoting wellness in the community, and it’s great for us to give back to the community and make our kids healthy,” St. Thomas More Hospital CEO Sheri Trahern said. This the sixth year that St. Thomas More has offered free physicals, but they also conduct a sports readiness assessment. The assessment test musculoskeletal dysfunction, ﬂexibility, muscle imbalance, agility, injury prevention exercises and recommen-

dations for safe sports. The athletes go through many different exercises with the help of the hospital’s therapy staff to test knees, hips, posture, spine and shoulders. If the staff ﬁnds something wrong, they will let the athlete know, give them some recommendations on what they can do and if they need a follow-up. “If we start to address those areas now or even plant the seed that ‘hey, I need to work on this’ then they can work on those things throughout the year, through next year and be more aware of it to stay more healthy,” said Tim Andrews, manager of rehabilitation at St. Thomas More Outpatient Therapy.

With the opening of the recent medical office building, hospital officials said, it has allowed for this event to go more smoothly. In years past, the event was in one building and with all the people in one location, it was hard to keep the temperature down, Andrews said. Also with the new building, it allows each staff to stay in their own areas, which allows them to uses their own equipment and allows them to work more efficiently in a non-crowded building. “Now with the two buildings, we are able to flow the kids better, it does take a little more walking through,” Andrews said.

Longtime Cañon City surgeon Patterson says goodbye After 30 years in orthopaedics, it is time for me to close my ofﬁce and surgical practice. I take this opportunity to thank the patients and families who have put their faith in me. There is no greater reward for a surgeon than the thanks of a grateful patient. I have spent my working life doing what I was meant to do with the support of lots of people. Surgeons can’t operate without nurses, surgical technicians, x-ray technicians, central

supply, equipment representatives, anesthesia nurses and housekeepers. After surgery the PACU nurses, therapists, CNA’s, discharge planners and home health crew and the incredible medical surgical nurses who have the toughest job of all. Dr. Carlson and I were blessed with an exceptional ofﬁce staff. To Julie, Martha, Jessica and Brenda, I give all my heartfelt thanks. To Sheri Kohl, my exceptional, devoted and loyal

medical assistant, thank you. To Marion, my wife, my friend, my ﬁrst assistant, we will ﬁnish our journey together. Who should be referred to hospice care? Hospice care may be appropriate for any patient with an end-stage illness such as cancer, pulmonary disease, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, dementia and other non-malignant conditions. Certification of a six-month prognosis by the physician is required. When the patient’s physician makes a referral, the physician and our hospice team develop a care plan, which includes specific desires of the patient and family. There is no penalty if a patient outlives their six-month prognosis. Hospice care may be recertified for 60-day periods.
