Janet Kay Baier

March 3, 1941 - June 3, 2018 Janet Kay (Barber) Baier of Canon City, CO passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday June 3rd, 2018 at age 77. She was surrounded by her family. Janet was born March 3rd, 1941 in Garden City, KS to Eston and Verma (Frost) Barber. She attended Garden City High School. Janet married the love of her life, Andrew Baier on May 21, 1957. Their marriage of 57 years was a genuine example of love and devotion to all who knew them. Janet was a homemaker and part-time photographer for Lifetouch, making children smile and laugh as she took their school photos. Janet was known for her generous and giving heart and for the love of her God, husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and best friend and beloved dog Benny. She was always up for a good time and her humor and spontaneous nature made her a true joy to be around. Janet best enjoyed being around family and friends making them laugh and often blush at the things she said and did. She also enjoyed polka music and

dancing with Andy. After retirement Janet and Andy moved to Canon City, CO to enjoy fresh air and mountains. Janet is survived by her children Michael Baier, Canon City, CO, Barbara (Robert) Esfeld, Great Bend, KS, Phillip Baier, Denver, CO, and Mike's wife Nancy, a daughter-in-law she loved so much she adopted as her own daughter. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, brother Frankie Barber (Melba), San Antonio TX, Sisters Ernestine Thorne, Hays, KS, Vi Simon, Newton, KS, and Sharon Schinstock (Don), Hutchinson, KS. Those who went before her are her parents, husband, oldest daughter, Annette Tolliver, and sister Joann. Music was very important to Janet and she got to spend some of her last moments listening to her favorite song by Elvis Presley. "Take my hand, Precious Lord. Faith "Cathy" Solano 1951 - 2018

Faith "Cathy" Solano, age 66, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 9, 2018, at home. She was born July 6, 1951, to "Chris" and Joanne (Windhurst) Christensen, whom preceded her in death. She was a graduate of St. Vincent de Paul High School. She pursued her college education at Western State College, earning her bachelor's and master's degrees. That is where she met and married Joe Solano in Gunnison, Colorado. Her passions were being an extraordinary Special Education teacher for over 30 years and an amazing 4-H leader for 30+ years which kept her young-at-heart and creative. She was amazing at listening, mentoring, and having fun with her grandchildren, family and 4-H kids. Cathy truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; exploring caves, quilting/crafting and painting as well as

any activities that involved spending time with her grandchildren, family and 4-H extended family. Cathy had a unique ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Joe Solano; two brothers, Mike (Mil) Christensen and Scott Christensen; two sisters Judy Christensen and Susan (Paul) Christensen; her children Anna Solano and Chris (Mikayla) Solano; her 5 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Family, friends, and others whose lives Cathy touched are invited to her memorial service at St. Benedict's (622 W 2nd St, Florence, CO 81226) 10 am, Saturday, June 30, 2018, with a Christian burial at San Juan Batista. A "Celebration of Life" reception will follow the burial to celebrate her life and share stories of the amazing woman she was.

Michael Lee Mattson 1959 - 2018

Michael Lee Mattson, better known as "Mick", was born on September 26, 1959 in Rocky Ford, CO. He was raised on a cattle ranch on the plains of Eastern Colorado near Punkin Center. After graduating from Karval High School, he worked on the Lane Ranch with his Grandpa Johnson, a 22,000 acre cattle ranch south of Limon. He also worked on the Pring Ranch near Colorado Springs until 1986. He worked for John Deere until 1991, and then became a Fireman for the city of Colorado Springs until 1997. He and his wife bought 300 acres at the base of the Wet Mountains to build their dream home and raise their two children. He then obtained his real estate license and he and his wife worked as a team for Land Properties for many years. In 2003, he was hired at the Department of Corrections in the Wild Horse Program, where he planned to remain until retirement. He had many wonderful stories about inmates and staff from his years there, both comical and heart warming. Three of the inmates that worked for him crafted him crosses, both as a symbol of his faith and as an appreciation for being treated with respect. He handed out

many New Testament Bibles from the Fellowship of Christian Cowboys, and he was always available for prayer and words of encouragement. He attended Vineyard Christian Fellowship, where he was also a volunteer at the youth group for over 5 years. Mick always felt closest to God on the back of a horse, and he will always be remembered for his incredible sense of humor and witty one-liners. He received his ultimate healing and left this world on June 5, 2018 with his family at his side. He will be sorely missed by his wife of 29 years, Linda Mattson, and his beautiful children, Michael Tyler Mattson and Lyndsey Nicole Shotts (wife of Russell Shotts) of Florence, CO. He is survived by his loving parents Frances and Delbert Mattson of Punkin Center, brothers Monty and Marty Mattson of Punkin Center, and daughters Brianne and Jamie Mattson of Elizabeth, CO. Memorial Service will be held at Vineyard Christian Fellowship, 245 S Raynolds, Canon City CO on Friday, June 15th at 4PM. In leiu of flowers, donations may be made to Vineyard Christian Fellowship or Sangre De Cristo Hospice.

Lawrence "Larry" Noble May 30, 1933 - June 4, 2018

Lawrence (Larry) Noble, 85, of Cañon City, CO, obtained his eternal reward in Heaven June 4, 2018. He was born May 30, 1933 to Lawrence and Doris (Dowler) Noble in Florence, CO. He joined the army when he was barely 17. He finished his last class through the army and came home to get permission from his father to go to Korea and graduate with his class. He graduated from Cañon City High School in 1951. He then got on a bus to serve his country in the Army during the Korean War. Lawrence married, Donna Brown, the love of his life in July of 1953 and spent many happy years traveling the world during his time in the service. After he left the army he went to work for Boeing in Washington. The family then moved to Cañon City in the 1970. He was a long-time salesman at different jobs but was most known as the McNess Home Products

salesman who went door to door. Larry left a lasting impression on many of his customers. Larry always had a story or a joke to share, and never met a stranger. He was a loving husband and father and will be missed by many. Survived by his children, Daughter-in-law Debbie Noble, Donald Noble, Greg (Donna Rae) Noble, Cheryl (James) McDaniel, James (Lisa) Noble; 18 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and his brother Danny Noble of South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, parents, sons, Kenneth and Gerald. A graveside service will be held at 10AM, Monday, June 25th at Lakeside Cemetery, Canon City, CO. Corinne Lorraine Mullins October 20, 1946 ~ June 3, 2018

On June 3, 2018 the Lord needed a special angel in heaven and took Corinne Lorraine Mullins into his arms, for there were special duties for her to perform. Corinne was born on October 20, 1946 in Ames, Iowa to Carman Wesley Dunn and Pearl Lorraine Kringen Dunn, while Carman attended Iowa State University. The family moved to Trent, South Dakota where Carman worked on his farm and as an agricultural teacher before getting a position with the Bureau of Land Management. This position took the growing family to Grand Junction, Colorado where they fell in love with the mountains. After a move to Durango, Colorado where Corinne spent her elementary and junior high years, the Dunn family then moved to Canon City, Colorado in 1960. Corinne spent summers working at Buckskin Joe's old west town drawing silhouettes for tourists. While working at Buckskin Joe's she met a rough and tough gunfighter, Jim Mullins. Corinne graduated from Canon City High School in 1964 where she participated in Marching Band and Sponsors Drill Team. Following her High School Graduation, Corinne attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins for one semester before returning to Canon City to marry the love of her life Jim, on February 28, 1965. Jim and Corinne welcomed their daughter, Julie in 1966 and moved their family to Colorado Springs, where Jim worked as a plumber for several years. While living in Colorado Springs, Corinne was introduced to a sorority group of ladies called Beta Sigma Phi. Corinne held all positions in her chapters and enjoyed 47 years of friendships and special bonds with her sorority sisters. In 1972, Jim, Corinne, and Julie moved back to Canon City into a home

Jim and his father built. Corinne worked as a library assistant in the Junior High until 1975 when the family welcomed their son, Jeff. While raising two children, Corinne worked in the medical bookkeeping field before retiring after 20 years. Corinne had many interests including reading, drawing, painting, ceramics, arrowhead hunting and rock hounding. She was a Life Member of the Colorado Bowhunters Association and held the position of Southeast Regional Area Representative for many years. Corinne was also very proud of her Norwegian heritage. Jim and Corinne were married 45 years before becoming grandparents to their only grandchild, Brooke who became the light of their lives. Corinne is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jim Mullins; two children, Julie (Craig) Youngren and Jeff (Sandy) Mullins; one grandchild, Brooke Lorraine Mullins. Corinne is also survived by her siblings, James (Debbie) Dunn, Nancy (Rich Linsenmann) Dunn, Bill (Dee) Dunn; three Aunts, Celeste Locke, Alice Dunn and Barbara Christopher; brother-in-law Dennis Meese, very dear niece, Carrie (Brad) Hanenberg, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Corinne was preceded in death by her parents, Carman and Lorraine Dunn; sister Carol Meese; father and mother-in-law Dwight and Nel-Lee Mullins, brother-in-law Jack Mullins; and niece Michelle Mullins. 2018 citizen surveys begin mailing out this week

Citizen surveys will once again be mailed to Cañon City residents from June 13-27. This year 1,600 surveys will be mailed to randomly selected households that represent the demographics of the city. Surveys will be sent out twice to those households to ensure they receive it and to give them multiple chances to fill it out. These surveys have been instrumental in guiding the city’s direction as the results of the 2016 citizen survey were used to create the city’s 2017-2020 Strategic Plan. These surveys give citizens a chance to comment on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the community and city government in the following areas: • Economic Development • Public Safety • Infrastructure • Attractive Built Environment • Community Investment Opportunities • Public Trust, Transparency and Accountability Completion of the survey also gives city council insight to what areas citizens feel the city needs to focus on. An online opt-in survey will be available July 18 to citizens who did not receive a paper survey. Citizens are encouraged to take the time to complete the paper or online survey.

A number of customers have received scam calls regarding late bill payments. Customers are told they’re past due on their account, and without immediate payment, their service will be disconnected. These calls are scams. Black Hills will never call making these demands. Do not provide your Social Security number, credit card numbers or bank account information to anyone during an unsolicited phone call or an unannounced visit. Marie S. O’Leary July 8, 1914 - May 31, 2018

A life well-lived, a woman well-loved... Marie Feather Stewart O’Leary passed away on May 31, 2018, just shy of her 104th birthday. Her long life began as one of seven children of Minnie and Charlie Feather in Hannibal, MO. The family farmed 80 acres in Pike County, MO, where Marie did chores, picked pansies, listened to her mother read, played with her siblings, and dreamed of seeing the world. And see the world she did! After beginning her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse, she later thrived as a special education teacher, footsteps followed by her late granddaughter Ashley Johnson, who taught at Florence Elementary. Marie married Fred Stewart, an Army officer who served in World War II, who passed away in 1967 after they raised two children, who survive them, Jeanne Ledbetter of Cañon City and James (Arlene) Stewart of Fountain Hills, AZ. After she retired, Marie continued to live in the Chicago area, which served as her home base as she traveled, including a trip around the world that included one of her favorite memories, standing on the Cape of Good Hope. She would later marry Patrick O’Leary with whom she shared many more adventures, including a trip to Ireland where she kissed the Blarney Stone. After several years as snowbirds, they moved to the Phoenix area where they continued their travels, often to Las Vegas and San Diego. After Pat’s death, Marie relocated to Cañon City, CO where she lived for 13 years as an active member of the community. Marie was a member of the DK Chapter of P.E.O., Zonta, New Neighbors, and several book clubs. She was also an avid volunteer all of her life. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Fremont Center of the Arts. She was a staunch supporter of the Cañon City Public Library, just ask Gary. She was also a member of Presbyterian Churches everywhere she lived. Zonta recognized Marie as the Yellow Rose Woman of the Year in 2011 for her service to the community, incredible spirit, and generosity to friends and family. Last year she was the recipient of Fremont Exceptional Women’ s (FEW) Ruth Carter Award for Excellence of Character, an honor that truly thrilled her. In addition to her service to the community, she loved walking, especially on the River Walk with her late son-in-law Tom Ledbetter. Tom and his adventurous family introduced her to the thrills of white-water rafting. She loved her rafting trips with them,

taken while in her 90’s. She enjoyed cross word puzzles and reading, especially Tony Hillerman novels. Throughout her life, she wrote stories for her grandchildren, journals for her memories, and poetry for anyone who was interested. Towards the end of her life, when reading and writing became difficult, she enjoyed watching the birds out her window and episodes of MASH and Murder She Wrote on DVD. Most of all, Marie enjoyed gatherings of friends and family. She was known to enter an event with the refrain, “I’m here, now the party can begin!” She leaves many friends to cherish their memories of her, including close friends who helped with her care: Janet Bergin, Stacey Cline, Emma Creany, Annie Ford, Cheryl Henderson, Della Rieger, and Forrest Vlahogeorge. In addition to her children, she leaves a family of nieces, nephews, and grandchildren who will also miss her dearly. Her grandchildren Mindy (Gary) Minor of Cañon City, CO, Matt (Wendy) Johnson of Pearland, TX, Lance (Pam) Stewart of Sugar Land, TX, and Kristina Perkins of Scottsdale, AZ will continue to share their memories with Marie’s nine great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Also cherishing their memories of Marie are Tom’s family, including his sister Jo Ellen Sutter of Houston, TX and daughters Jeri (Larry Stevens) Ledbetter of Flagstaff, AZ and Jaque Ledbetter of Garden Valley, ID. Marie’s former son-inlaw, Rusty Johnson and his wife Dianna of Memphis, TN also had a special bond with Marie and have many memories of sharing Jim Beam and reading her poetry. Marie was a role model for all who knew her. Her grace, charm, compassion and wit encouraged everyone to strive to live long like Marie. Almost all who knew her have said something to the effect of, “When I grow up, I want to be like Marie!” Special thanks to the wonderful people of Fremont Regional Hospice for their compassionate care of Marie and her family. Also, many thanks to her visitors from P.E.O, the Presbyterian Church, and her book club. At Marie’s request, the family is planning a celebration of her life sometime this summer. Clara Belle (Becky) Hamilton 01/14/1931 ~ 06/08/2018

Clara Belle (Becky) Hamilton was born on January 14, 1931, in Dodge City, Kansas to Aaron andMattie Beck. She moved to LaJunta, CO., at the age of one and graduated from LaJunta High School in 1948. She married Thomas Lee Hamilton Sr. on August 22, 1948, in Rocky Ford CO. There they farmed and she taught Head Start for many years. They moved to Canon City in 1973, and Becky worked

at Lincoln Elementary until 1983. Becky was a faithful member of the Church of Christ since 1948. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and husband. She is survived by five children, Linda (Dennis), Judy (Rick), Nancy (Mike), Tom (Molly), and Rusty; 13 grandchildren; and 31 great grandchildren. Services will be held at Church of Christ Wednesday, June 13th at 10:00 am.

Downtown Consumer Survey: Residents want businesses open later By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record In a recent downtown consumer survey offered by the Cañon City Economic Development Office and the Downtown Business Alliance, more than 880 respondents from across Fremont County shared information about their shopping habits and what they would like to see in the downtown area. Cañon City Economic Development Director Ryan Stevens said the survey was offered so businesses could find out what people want and also why locals aren’t patronizing some businesses. Stevens began giving samples of the results to business owners after the survey launched, but he will offer a full presentation during the Downtown Business Alliance’s monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall. “One of the things we are seeing coming out of the survey is business hours,” he said. “A lot of people made comments that they can’t shop downtown because store hours are the same hours they’re working, Monday through Friday.” Sixty percent of all shopping takes place after 6 p.m. or on the weekend, he said. Tailored West has expanded its business hours for the summer season and The Cellhouse is typically open seven days a week and later into the evening compared to other stores, Stevens said. “I would love to see at least 75 percent of our businesses downtown with some type of core common hours,” Stevens said. “I think that’s what the consumers want, too; they’ve been very vocal about that. They want to be able to shop after work.” Respondents also indicated they would like to see a greater variety of businesses downtown. “Another common thread was options for family activities,” Stevens said. “It seemed like the consumers didn’t feel like there was a whole lot for families to do or for youth to do downtown.” He said this could be a business opportunity for a budding entrepreneur. Stevens regularly talks to potential merchants and actively works to recruit businesses to the area. Based on survey results, marketing the downtown as a whole, as well as individual businesses, is something Stevens will recommend to the merchants. “A lot of people don’t necessarily know that they are there,” he said. “We

had a positive gain of about 800 people that moved to Fremont County in 2016 — there is probably twice as many that are new to Fremont County — those are missed marketing opportunities for people, they are trying to get tapped into the community.” According to the survey, 53 percent of respondents indicated dining and social gathering was their most important aspect of downtown, while 21 percent said shopping was their most important aspect. Respondents also indicated they wanted to see more patio seating, and in response, three additional businesses have added outdoor dining. Mayor Preston Troutman said the complexion of Main Street has changed because of the restaurants that have added patio seating. “We feel it is very homey,” he said. “This is small town America — it’s just beautiful.” Stevens also is working with the city council to compile results from a recent trip to Buena Vista and Salida where council members spoke to city leaders and business owners to find out what steps they took to help their downtown areas function. “One of the core messages we got out of it was perseverance,” he said. “Just because you try something and it doesn’t work, it doesn’t mean abandon it — sometimes you have to go back and try it again.” One take-away the council may consider is lowering the speed limit on Main Street from 25 to 20 or 15 miles per hour. “Going back to the survey, we saw a lot of comments around traffic and the crossings and people not stopping for pedestrians,” Stevens said. “If the speed limit is slowed down, that makes it easier to stop for pedestrians. We are evaluating that right now.” Stevens also meets regularly with the downtown merchants’ organization that recently changed its name to the Downtown Business Alliance and has come under the umbrella of the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce. 1. Everyone is welcome to take part in this event, except for professional river guides. (judges’ discretion) 2. All boat owners must transport their boat to and from the river. Owners are responsible for all flotsam and gear adrift. Keep the river clean! 3. NO Pre-Manufactured Boats. The boat must be made by the competitors specifically for the event. You may not use, as the foundation of your craft, a boat or watercraft that has been made by a factory or company with the purpose of navigating any form of water (lake, river, ocean, pond, river, brook, bathtub, pool). Participants must be above the waterline. No enclosed tops to the boats. Boats must be kept in the water at all times. Only homemade sails and paddles are allowed. No unsportsmanlike conduct is allowed between boats. Boats must be no wider than 6 feet and must fit under the bridges. 4. Boats must be able to hold at least three people. 5. All people who start the race on the boat must finish the race on the boat. (A person may fall off and get back on). 6. Must be human powered. No motors. 7. The boat must remain intact from start to finish. A boat that breaks apart during the race will be disqualified. 8. The event will be judged by a combination of audience applause and official judges. Judges’ decisions are final. 9. The start of the race is “green gate.” The end of the race is the “play wave” just upriver from “river-station” take out. 10. June 14, 2018 For Immediate Release Judy Weyenberg Grand Champion Artist for 2018 Harvest Fest Art Competition Judy Weyenberg, of Cañon City, Colorado, is the winning artist of the 2018 Harvest Art competition, held annually by The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey. Judy’s watercolor, Pathway to Harvest, depicts a walkway through the vineyards to the Monastery in bright vibrant colors. She is a second-generation artist from Albuquerque, New Mexico, who has called Cañon City home for many years. The artwork will be used for posters, cards and tee shirts for the 2018 Harvest Fest. The first runner-up is a pastel watercolor called Abbey Grape Harvest by Bernice Barnes of Pueblo, Colorado. It is a beautiful depiction of vineyards and the Monastery. There were also entries from as far away as Centennial and Spring Creek, Nevada. All the artwork will be on public display for a showing at the Artist’s Reception, Art in the Park, on Saturday, June 23rd from 1:00-3:00. Most of the artists will be in attendance. “All the entries are outstanding, and I cannot wait for the community to view them Saturday” said Sally Davidson, the art competition coordinator. Abbey wine, fruits, cheeses, artisan breads and crackers will be served to complete the afternoon’s enjoyment. The event is free and open to the public. Being a teen in today’s world is not easy. Youth today are faced with so many challenges, one of which is just being accepted for who they are. Misfit Adventures is a new group, and a vision of Sandi Jackson’s and Soarin On Wings, where youth can come and just be themselves and hang out with a horse and other youth, and feel safe, and be accepted. Misfit Adventures provides a safe place to address emotional roadblocks and develop new ways of interacting socially. We will be hanging out as a group and learn about horses and ourselves. Why horses you might ask. Well, a horse doesn’t care where you are from, how much money you have, what your clothes are like, what you look like, the color of your hair or your skin, your age, your political beliefs, your religious beliefs or where you came from. The horse is only concerned about how you behave. Who you are is how you are. Our first group takes place on June 23rd from 9:30 to 12:00. The cost is $35.00 per person. It will take place at the Cactus Rose on 8-mile hill. Pre-registration is required. You can register by calling 720-635-0916. The group will take place outside around horses so long pants and closed toe shoes are required. A release will need to be signed by a parent or guardian. Refreshments will be served.
