Thomas E. Martin Sr. July 11, 1931 ~ May 19, 2018

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Martin Sr., who were united in marriage on August 1, 1953, were reunited in Heaven on May 19, 2018, when Tom peacefully passed into eternity with his family by his side. Tom spent 61 years with his beloved wife, Alice Mae (Towner) Martin, who preceded him in death, November 23, 2014. Thomas was born July, 11, 1931, in Cross Roads, Alabama to Rufus Emmett Martin and Annie (Collette) Martin. Dad was a proud Korean War Veteran, who served our country from November, 1950, to October 1953, when he was wounded in battle. Receiving 2 Purple Hearts, Bronze Service Star, and National Defense Medal Combat Infantry Badge, he was always proud to have served his country and especially proud to have two grandsons and one grandson-in-law follow in his footsteps, serving in the Marines, Navy, and Army. After a long career owning and operating his own business in the tree care industry, he retired and remained in Canon City, to see his children, Linda (Cody) Innes, Jenny (Jim) Williams, Peggy (Jeff) Dunn, and Tom (Connie) Martin, Jr., all from Canon City, Colorado, and Becky (John) Ruffini, in Hemet, California, lead successful lives. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, gambling, gardening, and his family; including grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, Jerry (Dana) King, Avery, Brooklyn, and Colton. Jess (Wendy) King, Skyelar, Peyton, Julian, Lucky, Blaze, and Max. Justin King, Kelley, Makayla, and Brody. MSgt. Brad (Lara) Innes USMC, July, and Grace.

Corey (Nikki) Dunn, Billy, Coral, Lily, Aiden, Landon, Ava, and Darlynn. Kayla Dunn (Bryan Maestas), Cayden, Eli, and Isaac. Christopher Martin (Amanda Paulson), Timothy (Kathryn) Martin, Shannon, Connor, and #23 Great-Granddaughter, expected in September, 2018. Kenneth R. Orchard was born in Rupert, Idaho, on November 23, 1941 to Otis and Mary (Radford) Orchard. He was a skinny red head with more freckles than there are stars. Ken's life centered around three F's: Family, Fishing, and Family History. He met Lureen Rencher in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1966, and they married in December of that year. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2016. The couple had two children, Lanae and Kenneth Lynn, in Salt Lake. They later moved to Aurora, Colorado, and then to Cañon City, where their younger three children, Amy, Jeanette, and Leah were born. Ken remained in Cañon City with Lureen until his death. Ken loved his kids, who affectionately called him Pop. He was proud of their accomplishments and proud of their lives. He loved his 18 grandchildren and enjoyed the times when the family could all be together. Ken began fishing with his mom and dad as a child. He gave it up for a while when his older children were young (the kids were bad luck), but he took it up again as they got older. He made sure that Lureen always had a license, just in case she might accidentally catch a fish. His grandchildren looked forward to afternoons with him on Lake Isabel, but seldom did anyone out-fish him. He also enjoyed fishing

with a few close friends who did out-fish him occasionally. Later in life, Ken got the "family history bug." He became the director of the Family History Center at the LDS church in Cañon City, and he loved every minute he was there. It was a place where he actually enjoyed working with other people. He was able to help many individuals make important connections to their ancestors. A few years ago, he gave each of his children a scroll with all of their ancestors that were known at the time. The scrolls each measured three feet high and 14 feet across. It was a gift of a lifetime. Ken's life was taken unexpectedly and far too soon. He is survived by his brothers, Thad (Glea) and Richard (Lola); his wife, Lureen, along with all of his children and grandchildren. Ken made sure that we all understood that death is not the end, and we know that he is watching over us during this hard time. The family wants to invite anyone who knows Ken, Lureen, or their family to join with them for the funeral on Wednesday, May 30 at 10:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1435 Elm Ave., in Cañon City. Robert J. Hanna It is with a heavy heart that we are grieving the loss of Robert J. Hanna, beloved husband, Father, Grandfather - ‘Pappap’ and loyal friend. Robert passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on May 10, 2018. He was a Vietnam Army veteran with over 23 years of dedicated service to our country. He worked as a farrier, covering most of southern Colorado for over 30 years. Services were held at Trail Finder Park, west of Florence, on Colo. 115 on Saturday May 26, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. He will be deeply missed by all who loved and knew him. February 10, 1961 - May 18, 2018 Laura J. Shane, 57, of Canon City after a lengthy illness went home to be with the Lord and her son, Jeremy, on May 18, 2018. Laura was born February 10, 1961 in Canon City, Colorado to Tony F. Jaquez and Ramona (Karr) Jaquez. Laura retired after spending many years in the nursing home field caring for those in need. She enjoyed spending her time in the garden, planting flowers. She is survived by her mother, Ramona Jaquez of Canon City; brother, Tony G. Jaquez of Canon City; Terry Dee Jaquez of Pueblo, and

Henry Jaquez and her good friends, Judy Dowd, Don Dowd, Joy Dowd, Shanna Dowd, and Wanda Fancher, along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Tony F. Jaquez; her son Jeremy Shane; and many aunts and uncles. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service, 9:30 am, Saturday June 9, 2018, Bridge to Life. Ruth Marie Lankford 10/29/1923 ~ 03/27/2018

Ruth Marie Lankford passed peacefully away on March 27, 2018. She was born on October 29, 1923, to A.C. and Lula Maude Thompson in Springer, New Mexico. Her family moved to and from New Mexico, Colorado, Florida, Alabama and back to Colorado where they lived in the San Luis Valley and then Salida area. Her father, A.C., worked for the D&RGW railroad and she worked along with him for a short time in Utah and Colorado. That was where she met her future husband, George. They were married on July 17, 1946, in Raton, New Mexico. The couple moved frequently for George's job with the D&RGW railroad. They lived in Price, Utah, Thompson Utah, Tennessee Pass, Gypsom, Maysville, Salida and finally Canon City. Ruth and George had 4 daughters-Becky, Debby, Edna, and Velma to go along with George's 4 other children- Dan, Ken, Carol Anne and Ed. Ruth was a homemaker. She was a bowler, baker and an avid reader. She loved her family, her dogs, her cats, clouds and hummingbirds. She was a kind and gentle person-slow to anger

and quick to forgive. She will be missed by her daughters, Becky McDowell and Edna (Danny) Chess of Canon City; stepchildren, Dan (Donna) Lankford of Texas, Ken Lankford of California, Carol Ann (Bill) Pugh of Tennessee and Ed (Shirley)Cutshall of Washington; 20 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren;five great great grandchildren and sister-in-law Charlene Thompson. She was proceeded in death by her parents, sister Audrey Wickers, brother Roy Thompson, sister Opal Heister, husband George, daughters, Velma (Larry) Bustos, Debby (Phil) Fielding, grandsons Patrick Lankford and Kenny Lankford. Her wish was to be cremated, her ashes put with George's and their ashes will be placed in the Poncha Springs Cemetery alongside her parents later this summer. Her family wishes to thank Dr. Mark Sindler, Joan Sindler and staff for years of wonderful care. They also thank the Fremont Regional Hospice, Kathleen Hollingsworth and Penny Riggins for their care and concern. All who knew her loved her.

Cañon City Geology Club to host 90th anniversary party

The Cañon City Geology Club will celebrate its 90th anniversary party from 6 to 8 p.m. June 11 at the Fellowship Hall of the United Methodist Church (northwest corner of Ninth and Main streets) in Cañon City. The community is invited to attend. There will be displays of rocks, minerals, fossils, gems and lapidary examples, club and local history, speakers and other activities. Participants are encouraged to bring a mystery rock for identification. There will be a grab bag to pick a rock and then refer to a chart to identify it and learn more about it. There also will be anniversary cake and other refreshments. The CCGC was founded in 1928. It was the first geology club in Colorado and one of the first four clubs to be formed west of the Mississippi River. It was the first club in Colorado to become a chartered member of the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies and was a founding member of the Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies. Department to conduct chip seal operations

The Fremont County DOT will be conducting chip seal operations from June 4 to June 20. CR4 from U.S. 50 to CR45 and CR11 (High Park Road) from MM5 through MM12/County Line are scheduled for chip seal overlay. Expect delays and reduced speeds, as there will be one lane open through the work zone. The county appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation, and reminds motorists to be courteous to crews and fellow motorists.

A New Home Royal Gorge Archery moves into former Hilltop Market building

Royal Gorge Archery and Range has a new home. The business recently relocated to 1409 S. Ninth St., which is formerly the Hilltop Market Building. Business owners John and Misty Vernetti said the move is just in time for archery hunters to get supplies and bows for the 2018 hunting season. The move is happening as Hilltop Custom Meat Processing is about to open up later this year. Royal Gorge Archery will be in the front of the building, Suite A, while the meat processing business will be toward the back of the building. This collaboration will created a one-stop shop for hunters. John Vernetti is a multi-generation resident of Fremont County and grew up with Brian Dieter, who co-owns Hilltop Custom Meat Processing, with wife, Suzie. He said they have stayed closed friends through the years and when the idea of moving into one location, it seemed like the perfect ﬁt. “We loved the support of the downtown businesses and the opportunity to be a part of Canon City’s historical downtown,” John Vernetti said. “This seemed more ﬁtting. It’s a great location with parking and space to expand.” RGA offers compound traditional and crossbows, along with archery accessories, such as arrows and other gear. They also service bows. The business even offers personalized RGA accessories. The business also still have an indoor 20-yard archery range, but

John Vernetti said RGA will still have league nights from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The leagues are open to anyone. Sign up is at 6:30 p.m. and there is an $8 fee per session for leagues or anytime during the day. In addition to league nights, the RGA hosts many competitions and fun shoots. For the past two years, the Royal Gorge Archers Club has hosted multiple competitions from the Rocky Mountain Archery Association with great turnouts. One thing that won’t change at the new location is RGA’s commitment to bring Fremont County the best, honest and friendly full ser-

vice archery shop and to provide superior customer service. John Vernetti said he wants customers who leave the story happy and he likes building relationships with his customers. Cañon City’s Zerby Automotive won an award from AAA as Colorado’s top shop for the year of 2017. This is the ﬁrst year that AAA is handing out the top shop award in Colorado so it took Zerby Automotive president Keven Zerby off guard. “When I got the phone call, I wasn’t sure what it was and it was the AAA award,” Zerby said. The top shop award is awarded to shops that have high customer satisfaction, approval rating, facility appearance and certiﬁcations that the technicians have, and according to Zerby, the shops approval rating was 100 percent. “The reason I received the award is because my employees are so good,” Zerby said. “You’re no better than your employees.” The top shop award is given out to the top 10 automotive repair shops in the state of Colorado, which is more than 140 shops, and the award has been given to AAA tow companies in the past. The top shop award is also given out in other states, such as Arizona and New York. Colorado’s top shop now will be a yearly award handed out, and Zerby

hopes that he will win it again. “I will be looking forward to getting it again next year,” Zerby said. Hospice care may be appropriate for any patient with an end-stage illness such as cancer, pulmonary disease, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, dementia and other non-malignant conditions. Certification of a six-month prognosis by the physician is required. When the patient’s physician makes a referral, the physician and our hospice team develop a care plan, which includes specific desires of the patient and family. There is no penalty if a patient outlives their six-month prognosis. Hospice care may be recertified for 60-day periods.

One of Cañon City’s best events just got even better. The BYOB (Build Your Own Boat) race is always a blast a and one of the most watched events at the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival. This year’s BYOB now has about 1,300 more reasons to build and race your boat. Dave and Lynda Lambert, owners of Cañon Signature Mortgage, have donated a one ounce gold coin that will be Awarded to the winning boat! Gold is currently floating (pun intended) around $1,300 an ounce. All entry fees and the gold coin will be awarded as prizes. So, register your boat today and start building it now!!!! 1. Everyone is welcome to take part in this event, except for professional river guides. (judges’ discretion) 2. All boat owners must transport their boat to and from the river. Owners are responsible for all flotsam and gear adrift. Keep the river clean! 3. NO Pre-Manufactured Boats. The boat must be made by the competitors specifically for the event. You may not use, as the foundation of your craft, a boat or watercraft that has been made by a factory or company with the purpose of navigating any form of water (lake, river, ocean, pond, river, brook, bathtub, pool). Participants must be above the waterline. No enclosed tops to the boats. Boats must be kept in the water at all times. Only homemade sails and paddles are allowed. No unsportsmanlike conduct is allowed between boats. Boats must be no wider than 6 feet and must fit under the bridges. 4. Boats must be able to hold at least three people. 5. All people who start the race on the boat must finish the race on the boat. (A person may fall off and get back on). 6. Must be human powered. No motors. 7. The boat must remain intact from start to finish. A boat that breaks apart during the race will be disqualified. 8. The event will be judged by a combination of audience applause and official judges. Judges’ decisions are final. 9. The start of the race is “green gate.” The end of the race is the “play wave” just upriver from “river-station” take out. 10. All on-river participants must sign a waiver, and wear proper safety gear. A helmet and a life jacket are required, no exceptions.
