Donald G. Smith passed May 10, 2018 in his home at Florence, CO. He was born on November 2, 1925 in Concrete, CO to Glenn Smith and Elizabeth Seward Smith. He grew up and attended school in Canon City. On October 19, 1944 he married Wildeana Mohr in Canon City. In 1946 they moved to Boulder, CO where he owned and operated Donald G. Smith Excavating and Trucking for 33 years. In 1978 they moved to Gentry, AR where he owned a cattle and chicken ranch. He always maintained a cabin in Alma, where he loved ﬁshing in Montgomery Lake and jeeping with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughterBarbara Barnard, Brother- Bill Smith, and grand-daughter Heidi Baer. He leaves to mourn his wife, Wildeana of 73 years, daughters: Donna (Will) Feltman and Linda (Ron) McLean; Grandchildren: Rhoni Doss, Realene Atwood, Julie Herod, Bridgitt Ragsdale, Eric McLean, Lori Bass, Shelly Kittleson, and 14 great grandchildren; Cousins: Jim and Sharon Allen, Robert and Cindy Pryor; Loving friends: Jean Warner, Hannah Snyder, and Romaine Herbert. Fremont County Cattlewomen attend regional meeting Five women from the Fremont County Cattlewomen attended a regional meeting May 3-5 in Burlington. Attending were Betsy Denney, Kathleen Shoemaker, Virginia Lindley-Brunn, Gerrie Colette and Helena Brunn. Representatives from eight neighboring states participated in a panel discussion on “Marketing your cattle after ranch.” They also toured a feedlot with 30,000 head of cattle and a ranch with genetic pure breed cattle learning about intense detailed records in its ranching operation. Much concern was voiced about laboratory

protein that is improperly labeled “fake meat” since consumers want to distance themselves from lab-grown foods. The reason Patrick Brown started something called “impossible hamburger” was to stop humans from having a taste for blood. Consumers should be alerted to USDA’s position on labeling imitation meat as real meat. The wrap-up sessions featured young women outside traditional roles in meat inspection and controlling animal diseases that are brought into the United States by animals brought from other world countries.

Family establishes CSU-Pueblo scholarship in name of Leslie Cacy

Nearing two years after Leslie Cacy tragically lost her life in an incident at the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, her husband has established a way to fulﬁll her dream of helping others. Devon Cacy and the Colorado State University-Pueblo Foundation recently announced Danielle Vuksinick as the ﬁrst recipient of the Leslie Danielle Cacy Memorial Scholarship. Leslie Cacy, an alumni of CSU-Pueblo, died May 28, 2016, after she fell off the train while working as a conductor on the railroad. She was at the rear of the train, standing in the door opening, when she fell. In a press release, Leslie Cacy was remembered as someone who had a heart of gold and always wanted to help those in need, whether they were animals or another human being. “Leslie was an avid animal lover and big believer in rescuing animals, and as such, adopted many shelter pets and gave them second-chance homes,” the press release stated. “Leslie was able to make friends with anyone, no matter the age or circumstance and was always willing to provide a listening ear and enjoyed listening to people’s stories. She had a knack for putting a smile on people’s faces with her genuine and sincere demeanor and heart; she was truly one of a kind.” Prior to her death, Leslie Cacy was pursuing her dream of becoming a geriatric psychologist with an animal emphasis, combining the two things that meant so much to her — helping people in need with the love of animals. Devon and Leslie Cacy met each other in 2008 while he worked on the train as a server and she and her family were on vacation. The two were married in October 2015. The Leslie Danielle Cacy Memorial Scholarship, which will be $2,000 yearly, will be awarded to students majoring in psychology, sociology, social work or preveterinarian medicine. The scholarship is both meritbased and need-based and is only available to full-time undergraduate students. According to the press release, the successful applicant must initially possess a 2.5 GPA and must maintain a 2.5

GPA to remain eligible. Eligible applicants must reside in Pueblo, Fremont or El Paso counties and can be any undergraduate, freshman through senior, grade level. In addition, students must also be working at least 25 hours per week while attending CSU-Pueblo and must volunteer or have volunteered at an animal shelter, elderly home or veterinary hospital. Vuksinick graduated from Pueblo County High School in 2017. She is a chemistry (pre-veterinary) major and is minoring in honors. While in high school, Vuksinick earned a 3.94 GPA and was a ﬁnalist for the Kane Family

Foundation Scholarship. She was involved in cross country, drama, FFA, Pre-Vet Club and volunteered many hours at a veterinary clinic. “Danielle was a perfect ﬁt for the Leslie Danielle Cacy Memorial Scholarship as she holds many of the same values and goals as Mrs. Cacy,” the press release stated. New staff ready for the summer at Cup and Cone Daily Record Staff Three new employees have completed their training and are ready for the summer season at the Cup and Cone. “This is our sixth summer,” said Jeri Fry, owner of the Cup and Cone at the corner of Fourth Street and Royal Gorge Boulevard. “These three young ladies have completed more than 50 hours of my regular training program which teaches them nearly all aspects of this small business.” Fry trains her staff in the batista and sugar arts, as well as soda fountain skills and customer service. Customers can be served by a real soda jerk at Cup and Cone and love it. Amber Snyder is a student with GOAL Academy and is also captain of her soccer team. Amber has shown her aptitude in waiting on different customers and was surprised by their many attitudes. “I have mastered how to make

teaching 15 girls the routines and discipline of service. Ciarra is a student at GOAL Academy and at Pueblo Community College working on her Associate’s Degree in Applied Science. “Scooping ice cream was hard at first, now I can make it look easy,” she said. “I love talking to the tourists from all over the world who find their way to our shop.” Holly Taylor brings some food service experience to the Cup and Cone from both Wyoming and Colorado. She is also a student at Pueblo Community College. Holly uses a wide array of people skills with ease. She loves dirt bikes and 4 wheeling with her younger brother. “I really enjoy the people I am waiting on in the shop, they are all so different and from many different places,” she said. “One thing I have learned is how to mop; it was hard at first and not my favorite thing.”

Holly is not a fan of coffee, but she can steam a creamy latte’ even with almond milk. Two more employees will join the staff as soon as school is out and the soccer season is over. Cassidy Heimel and Abigail Rupp have accepted positions and will begin training the third week of May. The Cup and Cone is an ice cream and coffee shop offering hand-dipped ice cream including Colorado made Boulder Brand Organic all natural ice cream and Cool Beads Beaded Ice Cream as well as Blue Bell ice cream. Their espresso is fresh roasted in Florence by the All Good Things Coffee Roaster. The staff can make such classics as banana splits, old fashioned ice cream sodas, shakes and malts as well as a velvety lattes and cappuccinos as light as air.
