He served 23 years including two years in the European Theater during World War II, four years in Japan and 13 months in Korea before retiring in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in November 1965 as the Chief Legal Clerk in the Staff Judge Advocate’s Office of the U. S. Disciplinary Barracks, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. He continued his service with the U.S. Army as a federal employee in the same office in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas where he retired in 1978 as the Army Claims Officer for Kansas, Missouri and Iowa. Jule was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church where he served in various capacities as a Boy Scout Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Administrative Board Member, and President of his Woh-Tani Sunday School Class. He is survived by his wife, Nadine; two sons, J. Wayne, Stephen C; two daughters-in-law; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five greatgreat grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; two brothers; two sons; and a grandson. Services have been entrusted to Holt Family Funeral Home. 2018 Cañon Proud Clean-Up begins Monday
Local officials and businesses are once again gearing up for the annual Cañon Proud Clean-Up Campaign. A limited number of trash vouchers for free disposal of household trash, furniture, construction debris, brush, logs, leaves and yard waste will be available on a firstcome, first-served basis to Cañon City and Fremont County residents beginning Monday and ending April 30. Trash vouchers are good for free disposal of half ton (one regular pick-up truck bed filled no higher than the sideboards) at Twin Enviro’s “Phantom Landfill” at 2500 CR 67 in Penrose. Amounts of trash in excess of half ton will be charged extra on site. Hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Cañon City residents may pick up a voucher from 8 a.m. to 5 p..Monday through Friday at City Hall, 128 Main St. Those living outside the city limits may pick up a voucher from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Room 105 of the Fremont County Administration Building, 615 Macon Ave. Proof of residency is required when obtaining a voucher. Only one voucher will be issued per household. Free disposal will end at 4 p.m. April 30. All loads must be covered, and no commercial haulers or contractors qualify for these vouchers. Partners in this event include Twin Enviro Services, R.D. Recycling, Junk Masters, and Call it Gone Metal Recyclers. In addition to the trash disposal vouchers, the following partners will accept recycling, appliances, vehicles, and specific metals; please contact them directly if their services are desired: — R.D. Recycling, located at 1501 High St. will accept appliances Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for free disposal. They will also pick up large loads in bulk. Brass, aluminum and copper will be purchased at prevailing rates. They will purchase automobile batteries for $3 each. Jewett’s Liquor breaks ground on new location
Carie Canterbury Daily Record Jewett’s Liquor owners Rick and Julie Wright officially broke ground Wednesday at the site where their current store eventually will relocate. The Wrights were accompanied by their daughter and grandchildren, store managers, members of the Chamber of Commerce and other invited guests to mark the occasion at 3120 E. Main St., located at the corner of Steinmeier and East Main Street. “This is a great location and a great opportunity,” Julie Wright said. The locally owned and operated liquor store will continue to do business at its current location, 121 N. 16th St. until the new building is ready for occupancy, then everything will move to the new store. “We hope to see all of our valued customers at our new location when we do move, and we look forward to serving new customers, as well,” Rick Wright said. He said a move-in date will be announced late summer or early fall. “This was an opportunity for what we felt like was a great location and a brand-new building,” he said. “This building is going to be fairly equal in size, but it will not be a warehouse like a lot of the new liquor stores are building.” Julie said it will be a shopping destination that will continue to offer a variety of wine, beer, spirits and gifts. Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District Executive Director Jim Hoar to retire in June Carie Canterbury Daily Record The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District board accepted a letter of retirement Tuesday from Executive Director Jim Hoar, who has served as director for 17 years. According to a press release, Hoar’s final day will be June 30. The board will start the selection process now to transition to a new director. “Jim will certainly be missed. His leadership has advanced the district in a multitude of ways,” Board President Ken Burger said in the press release. “He is one of the hardest working individuals that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. The things that were accomplished by the district during his tenure are simply remarkable. I personally appreciate everything that Jim has done for the district during my eight years as a board member.” Under Hoar’s leadership, the district has expanded both in size and in the number of facilities, amenities, trails and open space acreage it manages. In 2002, the geographical area the district services increased to 115 square miles in size with a successful inclusion election. The land that would become home to Pathfinder Regional Park was purchased in 2006

with the grand opening of the park in 2007. A fishing pond was added in 2008 and the Miner’s Pavilion in 2012. More recently, in 2016, Hoar facilitated the donation of a 160-acre parcel of land from Walter Schepp
and the purchase of the Summit Brick property. These have been developed into the Eagle Wing Trailhead, South Canon Trail system and Schepp Open Space. In his first year as director, the property at 575 Ash St. was acquired
through a lease-purchase agreement to house the district’s offices. Through the years, the facilities on the property have grown to include the Arkansas Riverwalk Dog Park in 2011, the Ash Street Community Garden in 2013, the renovation of the archery range in 2014 and construction of an elevated shooting stand in 2015. Notable enhancements to the parks and trails under the district’s management also occurred during Hoar’s tenure. The district acquired the old Harrison School playground in 2008 and the redeveloped park opened in 2012. To the west, the Arkansas Riverwalk Trail was extended to Ninth Street in 2004. The trail was extended to the east to the Mackenzie Avenue Trailhead in 2012. “I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished under the leadership of this board and those board members before them,” Hoar said in the press release. “I have always believed that I was just one part of a much larger team of dedicated public service employees and volunteers. I thank the community for the opportunities we have been given and all the fine people I have had the privilege to work with and work for. Together, we have made a wonderful difference in the quality of life in our community.”

As your Sheriff of Fremont County, I will run your office in the most professional, proactive and proficient manner. I have the experience, training and background in management and law-enforcement to make this happen. I will never forget that the people are the reason I am Sheriff, hired to protect and serve, and you are my Boss. I will run the agency the way the citizens of Fremont County want to see their Sheriff’s office ran. I will sit down with our District Attorney and demand that we seek the maximum sentence for any and all criminal activity and stop slapping their hands. These units house families and individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The person who holds this position will work closely with a non-profit partner, who will help assist in management of the units. Administration responsibilities will include day-to-day collecting and depositing of rent payments, processing lease violations, orientation of new residents, and tax credit compliance. Maintenance responsibilities will include hiring contractors, processing daily work orders, apartment turnovers along with other periodic responsibilities such as meeting with service providers. Skills that are required to perform the job efficiently include: experience in, or understanding of, social services, a sensitivity to residents in a supportive housing environment, ability to work independently, and own basic tools. valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and reliable transportation are also requirements. Other qualifications that would be favorable in the ideal candidate would be tax credit training / knowledge, experience with the homeless population and strong interpersonal skills. It may be helpful to have one to three years of experience in the related fields of property management and/or maintenance but is not necessary. An associates degree may also be useful when performing the duties of the described position but is not a requirement. From where, one may ask, is the vision to come which will inspire men to relinquish the ways of the past - war, competition and destruction of the planet - and so lead to the creation of a path to sharing, justice and peace? For how long must men wait for a sign that this is even feasible? Where should men look for a glimmer, even, of hope? Without doubt, there is much happening in the world to strain the credence of all but the most convinced that this much to be desired event is not only possible but assured. From what basis can such a statement be made? From what superior knowledge does it issue? How in this uncertain world can such confidence be maintained? The answers to these legitimate questions lie in the fact known to all Hierarchy (but not yet to all men) that Their Head and Leader, Maitreya Himself, is, for many years now, present in the everyday world; that many of Their illustrious Brothers, likewise, walk once more with men. This fact alone is quite without precedent. It betokens something wonderful and new for men. For the first time in countless thousands of years these ‘men without fault’ will teach men how to live, simply and well, in peace and right relationship. Thus it may be said that the future for man is assured. As they search for answers to their problems they will find Maitreya and His Group ready to respond, ready to guide men away from danger and further folly.
