Richard G. Mills Richard G. Mills, 86, a resident of Florence passed away March 2, 2018. He was born in Richmond, Virginia on February 14, 1932 to the late Major Henry P. Mills and Sissie (Atkins) Mills. Richard joined the U.S. Army at the age of 16 1/2 where he eventually trained at Fort Bragg with the 82nd Airborne Division. He served three tours during the Korean War. He was part of the 187th Infantry Regiment (101st Airborne Division at the time) known as the “Rakkasans”. He fought in some of the hardest fought battles including the battle of Chosin Reservoir, soldiers under General Douglas McArthur were known as the “Chosen Frozen” because of the extreme fighting the soldiers endured during the coldest winter on record. Richard traveled the world during his time in the Army as well as being assigned to the US Embassy in Venezuela. He was given an honorable discharge in 1963 after receiving the Bronze star for valor and the Purple Heart for injuries he received during his service. In 1962 while on tour in Germany for the Army, Richard was raised a Master Mason and would later transfer to be a member of the Fremont Lodge #97, where he served as worshipful master on two occasions as well as membership in Eureka Lodge #66 and Silvercliff Lodge #38, AF&AM as well as serving with the Fremont Shrine Club (Al Kaly Shriners), an appendant body of the Masonic Lodge. After being discharged in 1963 he went to work for the Colorado State Hospital for 3 years then transferred to the Colorado Department of Corrections. During his career there he earned a Master’s Degree in both Sociology and Behavioral Health. He eventually worked his way to the position of Warden and retired from the Women’s Division of the Colorado State Prison. After Retirement he was on a team of three hired by Bent County Commissioners to oversee all aspects of the Bent County Private Prison. He continued to work as a consultant for Bent County and Walsenburg Private Prisons until 2007. Richard was an accomplished artist in wood working and stained glass. It seems that all of his artistic endeavors were prize winning quality. Richard, simply known by his family as “Grandpa” was an honorable and kind hearted man. His love for life will be forever cherished. Richard is survived by his wife, Mary Howard-Mills; children, Gary (Brenda) Howard, Vickie Howard and Kimberly Diethrich; special nephew, R.J.; nieces, Kim and Deidra; along with numerous grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; first wife of 50 years, Maxine (Greenwood) Mills; and two sisters. Imelda Eileen Watkins, 67, passed away February 24, 2018 after a long battle with cancer. She was born April 24, 1950 to Andrew and Caroline Kuretich. Imelda will be deeply and dearly missed as she touched many in her unique and special way. Imelda loved horseback riding, woodworking, painting, watching clouds, family gatherings and trips to the mountains. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Melvin Watkins; sisters, Gerry (Michael) Apple and Cathy Pruitt along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Caroline Kuretich; sister, Carol (Kuretich) Flynn; brothers, Morgan Kuretich, Timothy Kuretich; and niece, Kelly Dickens. Georgeanna Jo Oxnam Georgeanna (Georgia) Jo Oxnam was born on February 22, 1934 in Salina, Kansas and passed away Thursday, March 1, 2018. Georgia enjoyed travel, scenic drives, Denver Broncos, Nuggets and the Colorado Rockies. She was very accomplished at cross stitch and was blessed with many wonderful friends and neighbors. Her spunky and quick sense of humor was enjoyed by all who knew her. She is survived by sons, Ron Oxnam, Joseph Oxnam; daughter, Robbin (Oxnam) Minkel; sister, Darrel Lee Chaddock Otterstein; five grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and her long-time companion, Thomas “Mike” Carmichael. CCHS student recognized by Cañon City Police Department Sara Knuth The Daily Record Cañon City High School freshman Camryn Pedzinski was at home scrolling through Snapchat when she saw something that looked a lot like bullying. A video, shared through the social media app’s story function, showed CCHS students presenting a new student with a “gift” — razors, shaving cream and a note that said, “Do us all a favor and shave your legs.” “I saw it, and it made me really mad,” Camryn said. So, she took to social media herself, creating a Facebook post to stick up for the student. The incident also was brought to the attention of the school resource officer and the CCHS administration. On Wednesday, the Cañon City Police Department recognized her efforts to step in to stop the bullying with the “Agent of Change” Award. “I didn’t know who she was. She was a complete stranger,” Camryn said after the department’s annual awards ceremony. “I didn’t like how people took it, or what they did, so I just wanted to make it known that bullying isn’t OK, whatsoever.” Police Chief Daric Harvey said Camryn’s actions showed courage, especially in a time when that doesn’t always happen. “We see examples all over the nation where young kids getting bullied have no mechanism to get it to stop,” he said. “We have other people who are present that see it and do nothing about it — bystanders, instead of being upstanders and making a difference in their community. The police can’t be everywhere all at once.” Camryn said she didn’t know the student personally — just that she was new to public school after spending most of her education in homeschooling. She only met her after the incident but said she made sure to tell the student that she would be there for her. “I was like, ‘If anything ever happens again or you need someone to talk to or a friend, I’m always there for you,’” Camryn said, adding that she was “just letting her know that I wasn’t going to treat her the way other people had treated her.” And while she said it was nice to accept the award Wednesday, Camryn said that wasn’t the reason she stood up for the student. “I really just did it to stand up for her and for people to understand that it’s not OK because it’s not,” she said. “That was my point — to make it known that I wasn’t going to put up with it and that other people shouldn’t either.”

Briefly Cañon School District to host safety meeting The Cañon City School District will host a community meeting at 7 p.m. April 9 at its Administration Building located at 101 N. 14th St. This town hall will give residents the opportunity to learn more about local school safety and security response and prevention efforts. Area Agency on Aging seeking volunteer to serve The Area Agency on Aging is currently seeking a volunteer to serve as advocate for residents in longterm care. Nursing home residents retain all of their legal rights when they enter a nursing home. Volunteer Ombudsmen are trained to protect residents’ rights and serve in a nursing home in their community. The Upper Arkansas Area Agency on Aging is recruiting a volunteer who wants to make a difference in the lives of elders residing in assisted living facilities and nursing homes in their communities. Fremont County is in need of a Volunteer Ombudsman to be a voice for the residents, to assess problems, and to come to a resolution. If you have free time, please consider helping maintain or improve the quality of life for residents in long-term care facilities. Once trained, volunteers are asked to spend just a few hours a month in this important and life-changing program. Mileage is reimbursed and letters of recommendation are available to those who qualify. Prospect Heights Jail receives some TLC

For the last 105 years, people have walked or driven past the vacant little stone jail on South Fourth Street, but few have gone inside until just a few years ago. To ensure the Prospect Heights Jail at 1307 S. Fourth St. will stand for another 100 years, the Fremont County Historical Society has partnered with Mountain Masonry to fix its deteriorating foundation and enhance its stabilization. Crews began work Feb. 19 and plan to wrap up this week. “This (jail) is part of the local mine history, the smelter history and the quarry history,” said Carol McNew, chair of the FCHS. “The bricks they used were probably from W.C. Catlin’s brickyard that was just down over the hill.” There had been a settlement in the area as early as the 1880s when the Nonac Mine first opened, and the U.S. Smelting and Refining Co. was thriving at the turn of the century. Anton Adamic was an elder, property owner and leader of the community that revolved around work at the nearby coal mines and zinc smelter. Since Cañon City was a “dry” community, the town of Prospect Heights was incorporated in 1905 as a “wet” community and eight saloons were open 24 hours. The three-room jail was built the next year to incarcerate the drunk and disorderly. The saloons closed in 1909, the same year the Zinc Smelter closed, and the jail was shuttered 1913. “This is a neat piece of history,” said Larry Linscott, a member of the FCHS and the manager of the jail project. “This is like one of the jails Gene Autry and Roy Rogers would have in their movies. I always enjoyed watching them as a kid.” Autry and Rogers probably never visited the Prospect Heights Jail, but McNew said cowboy actor Tom Mix was in the area making a movie when he got into trouble and ended up spending the night in the jail. According to past Daily Record articles, the jail’s first prisoner was Ernest Sell, the man who built it. Sell had helped build many of the stone churches and buildings in the area, but he reportedly celebrated the completion of the jail “a little too enthusiastically.” The Adamic family gave the jail and lot to the Historical Society in 1988,

The FCHS opened the jail for public tours Saturday afternoons the past three summers and will continue this year. Weather permitting, the jail will open for a kickoff from 1 to 4 p.m. May 5. “People come in and say they’ve driven by this for years, and even looked in the windows, and they always wanted to see inside,” McNew said. “This has been a really fun thing to do, saving the building. I am really pleased.” Michael Madone, the owner and operator of Mountain Masonry, and his crew plan to wrap up the project this week. Since the jail is a historic site, much thought goes into how to make the necessary repairs without compromising its historic value. “There are some joints that were stable enough we didn’t have to touch, you want to be un-intrusive — if it’s not broken, you don’t want to try to fix it,” Madone said. The structure’s original mortar likely was lime and sand, Madone said, which is much softer than what is used today. “We try to match the stone that we’re putting the new joints in with,” he said.

“It’s stronger than what it would have been originally, so it has some strength and a lot more longevity.” Madone, who also is an active member of the FCHS, has worked on a number of historic sites across Fremont County, including the Carnegie Library and the Florence Train Depot.

problem with wildlife should contact Colorado Parks and Wildlife to learn about mitigation options, Meisner said. Also during the meeting, the first reading of an ordinance amending sections in the municipal code regarding business dumpsters in residential zone districts was tabled to the April 4 General Government committee meeting. City staff will address concerns brought up by the public in a revised ordinance for council review. As written, the proposed revisions would allow business dumpsters, up to 2 cubic yards in size, in residentiallyowned zones. Outside collection times, these dumpsters would have to be kept

Council’s deer harvest proposal comes to a halt

Carie Canterbury Daily Record A proposed deer harvest within city limits to control deer herd populations will not move forward. The proposal was discussed by the General Government committee in February, but no action was taken by the city council during Monday’s meeting. Councilman Jim Meisner said citizens can legally hunt deer by archery on their private property during the appropriate hunt season, as long as they have a license. Since February’s meeting, he has received 15 emails in favor of a harvest

in areas not visible from a public or private street, except for alleys. It also would allow residents to obtain an exemption to the location requirements (not visible from any public or private right-of-way except alleys and not located in a manner to extend beyond the front facade of the principal structure) upon execution of an affirmation on forms provided by the city that the resident is not physically able to move the trash receptacle to and from the place of collection. Seven individuals addressed the council, many of them asking the council to consider properties that don’t have sidewalks or alleyways.

I have the experience, training and background in management and law-enforcement to make this happen. I will never forget that the people are the reason I am Sheriff, hired to protect and serve, and you are my Boss. I will run the agency the way the citizens of Fremont County want to see their Sheriff’s office ran. I will sit down with our District Attorney and demand that we seek the maximum sentence for any and all criminal activity and stop slapping their hands. As far as I am concerned, that puts illegal drugs and dealers on the top of my list. It is the people of our county that are taking a beating, and that must stop. This criminal behavior will not be tolerated in our county. As your Sheriff this will be a reality; nothing less. Being your chief law enforcement officer in the county doesn't give me more authority, just more responsibility. I know there is a lot that I can and will do to make a difference. I will make Fremont County a safer and more united community and reaffirm the residents’ faith and trust in their Sheriff’s Department. The best way to clean wood floors might surprise you (BPT) - Although most people envision their dream home with shiny wood floors, many consumers are unaware of the best way to care for them, according to a 2017 survey conducted by the National Wood Flooring Association. “Not surprisingly, many homeowners are unsure of the best way to effectively and quickly clean hardwood floors. Some believe mopping with a bucket of water and a cleaning solution is best while others occasionally sweep or vacuum. Many cleaning methods can hurt rather than help a floor, for example, even a ‘damp’ string mop can leave excess water on a hardwood floor, and we know that water and wood don’t mix,” said Bona U.S. Director of Marketing Cate Vanegas. The key findings in the online survey, conducted in October 2017 by Public Opinion Strategies, found that just 24 percent of consumers answered “sweeping” as the correct way to clean wood floors. This answer was closely followed by 19 percent who believe using a soap- or oil-based cleaner is best, and 12 percent who believe using water and vinegar is the best solution.

When you know where to look, there are preventative measures you can take to help avoid a pest infestation problem in your home. Terminix shares details on the unexpected, “secret” places pests can be hiding. Sinks and drains One often overlooked area is the kitchen sink. When not properly sanitized, drains can become a breeding ground for pests like cockroaches, drain beetles and fruit flies. Cockroaches are one of the more common pests found in drains as they can access pipes when pushed up from sewers. Cockroaches survive in drains by feeding on available organic matter like grease, food waste and hair. Other drain-breeding pests include drain flies, which resemble tiny moths, and fruit flies. Drain flies breed in residue found in drains. Fruit flies are attracted to garbage residue found in drains, which can contain

damp, organic matter in which to lay eggs, and is a good food source to feed young larvae. Use smaller drain mesh and drain cleaner to create a less appealing environment for drain flies and fruit flies. Ceiling light fixtures Bugs see UV lighting more clearly than humans, making ceiling light fixtures a common place to find

insects. Flies, beetles, cockroaches and wasps are attracted to the warmth and light, which, unfortunately for them, typically results in an early death. Electrical outlets One of the most unexpected places pests hide is inside your electrical outlets. Ants, beetles and bed bugs have been known to hide in electrical outlets

and the voids behind the outlet plate. A pest control technician may use a dry residual dust product to reduce any bugs that could be residing there. If bed bugs are found in electrical outlets, it is likely there are more in other parts of the room or home, so call a professional to schedule a full home inspection.

The kitchen pantry Equally likely to welcome uninvited guests is your kitchen pantry and cupboards. Pantry pests can include moths, weevils, beetles and mice, all of which are attracted to food stored in the kitchen. Pantry pests can quickly contaminate batches of cooking and baking ingredients, such as flour, grains, spices and pricey nuts and dried fruits. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to keep them out of your cabinets, including examining all packaging for damage; avoiding storing food in original cardboard and paper packaging and instead choosing airtight containers with sealing lids; buying smaller quantities of products and using them before expiration; consistently organizing and cleaning your pantry; and throwing away all contaminated food. (BPT) - Winter is in full swing and extremely cold temperatures continue to grip much of the U.S.; which mean hats, gloves and high home maintenance bills could be in your future. According to recent data from the Insurance

Information Institute, in 2016 severe winter weather cost homeowners more than $1.7 billion in property damages. While the seasonal shift can be a challenge for homeowners, taking these four steps today could ease home maintenance burdens

this season and all yearround. 1. Take a look at your windows Old windows - especially those with multiple panes of glass- are notorious for air leakage, allowing heat to escape the home while letting in cold air. If your home still feels drafty after you’ve turned the heat on, it may be time to upgrade to more energy-efficient windows. Mark Montgomery, vice president of marketing for Ply Gem Windows, www.plygem. com, recommends that homeowners pay attention to insulating values and glass packages when selecting new windows for their home. “Manufacturers have made significant technology advancements over the years. Thermal performance of windows can now achieve performance well beyond building code and Energy Star levels, significantly increasing energy efficiency. Along those same lines, low-E glass coatings allow us to customize windows to specific regional climate conditions. Steps taken to seal your home and save heat in the winter will also help improve indoor air conditioning flow during summer months. 3. Think about adding insulation In addition to sealing up any small leaks, it’s important to evaluate your home’s air tightness on a few fronts. For instance, consider adding materials such as fiberglass, cellulose or natural fibers to interior walls for enhanced insulation. On the exterior, look at areas

like your home’s cladding and consider upgrading to an insulated vinyl siding system. In addition to boosting curb appeal and minimizing ongoing maintenance, insulated vinyl siding, such as Mastic’s Structure Home Insulation System, efficiently reduces air leakage by providing continuous insulation along the entire exterior and covering wall studs that are left exposed by traditional wall coverage. 4.
