Marti Butell Kalb July 21, 1942 - January, 31, 2018 Marti (aka Marti Butell Kalb) returned home on January, 31st, 2018 with her family at her side. She was born July 21st, 1942 in Baldwin City, Kansas to Carl B. Butell and Leona Chastain Butell of Baldwin City, Kansas. Marti graduated from Baldwin City High School in 1959. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baker University and a Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology from the university of Kansas. Marti worked in public schools and private practice in Kansas and Colorado for the remainder of her life, teaching and working with children of all ages. Marti loved her animals, horses, llamas, dogs, and cats. She looked forward to weekly riding and carting. She was devoted to master Tai Yi, an energy process used to alleviate physical, mental, and emotional difficulties. Marti served her community serving on the Board of Directors of the Baldwin State Bank, The Universal Education Foundation, and the Community of Caring Foundation in Cripple Creek/Victor. Marti is survived by her loving husband F. Kent Kalb of Cañon City, her son Fyras T. Kalb (Heather) of Bismarck, North Dakota, her grandson Kody L. Kalb, of Jamestown, North Dakota, her great granddaughter Paisley, her sister Joan Hambrick of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, her brother Carl A. Butell, Baldwin City, Kansas and numerous extended family. Marti was preceded in passing by her parents Carl B. & Leona Butell and her granddaughter Amanda. A Celebration of Marti’s life will be held on March 31st, 2018 at the home. She will be missed by many.

Dennis E. Lyons October 3, 1935 ~ February 16, 2018 Dennis E. Lyons, 82, of Cotopaxi, passed away February 16, 2018 with family members by his side. He was born October 3, 1935 in Alton, Illinois to Russell Thomas Lyons and Helen Marie Light, who preceded him in death, along with his sister, Rita Delores and mother of his children, Nancy Kay Lyons. He is survived by his brother, Leo Emmett and sister, Carol Ann (husband, Ron) Tarczynski; sons, Craig, Mark and Michael (wife, Carmela), along with four grandchildren. In 1965, Dennis built his family’s home in Pueblo. He was employed with Michigan/Mountain Bell for 32 years, retiring at age 53 and continuing his affiliation with the Pioneers. He loved the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and hiked the entire mountain range over a period of three continuous years. He also swam the Mackinaw Straights, under the bridge, shore-to-shore at age 56 and was published in AARP magazine. He applied for and received a United States Patent for his design on aviation landing gear. His passions were hunting, fishing, traveling, photography, bird study and spending time with his beloved family. Dennis was an active member of the Cody Park Community Church as a board member, where he volunteered time and resources to support the church, as well as his surrounding friends and neighbors. He had a contagious smile and enjoyed life to the fullest extent. Dennis was a man of True Grit! June 21, 1942- February 12, 2018 James L. Adamic passed away peacefully at his home on February 12, 2018. He was born in Cañon City, Colorado on June 21, 1942 to John J. and Josephine Adamic. He attended grade school at St. Michael’s Catholic School in Cañon City. As a young man, he worked in the local farming and ranching community with extended family. As a teenager, he was very close to his Uncle Louie and found a love for horses and cattle. He started his own herd of cattle as a young adult and continued ranching, with the help of his sons in law, Doyle and Dave, until his death. He had a great love of bull riding and hit rodeos across the Southwest for years. He had several jobs locally: hauling fruit and veggies for Mr. Newell, learning cement work from Wayman Bryant and roofing. Jim started his own roofing company in 1967. He worked hard, doing all types of roofing throughout Colorado, for 46 years until his retirement in 2013. Jim met Judy at Murphy’s Poor Boy Drive-In in 1963. Soon after, he was 86ed from Murphy’s for scrapping- leaving his buddies to keep an eye on Judy. For 53 1/2 years, she kept him in line as they walked through life together and raised their daughters Lisa and Marge. He had a great love for hunting big game, especially mountain lions with his dogs, and had his numerous trophies displayed throughout his home. His grandchildren were his pride and joy and he enjoyed many trips to Park Dale with them taking care of the cattle, riding horses, hunting, and exploring the Indian Writings. Jim is survived by his wife Judy, daughters: Lisa (Doyle) Ruona and Marge (Dave) Meisner, grandchildren: Kacey, Brandi, and JW Ruona, sister Dell Kendall, niece Tina (Scott) Torres, nephews: Mark (Michelle) Kendall and Jack (Halley) Kendall, and numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Rose Marie, mother JoJo, father John and nephew John Kendall. A celebration of life will be held Sunday, February 25th at 11:00am at the Four Mile Community Club at the corner of East Main St and Steinmeyer Ave in Cañon City.

April 29, 1927 - February 14, 2018 Dorothy M. Hannah, 90, passed away February 14, 2018 in Cañon City. She was born April 29, 1927 to Joseph and Mary (Lauriski) Javernick. A lifelong resident of Cañon City, Dorothy graduated from Cañon City High School. On November 19, 1949, she married John A. Hannah. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed her rose and vegetable gardens, fishing and crocheting. She met and made many close friends through selling Avon and baking and decorating birthday cakes to wedding cakes. She was a member of VFW Auxiliary, KSKJ and St. Michaels’s Catholic Church. 13-year-old hands out shoes to Fremont Boys and Girls Club By Chris Graham The Daily Record

All Madison Tatinski, 13, wanted for Christmas was shoes. But they weren’t for herself — they were for others. That Christmas was four years ago when she started her mission to give shoes to those in need. That mission has turned into a nonprofit called Madison’s Mission 1 Pair at a Time. “I had decided that I had enough, and I didn’t want anything, so for that Christmas, I decided to ask for shoes instead of presents,” Madison said. A local shoe drive conducted by Madison’s Mission collected 310 pairs of shoes that will be distributed across Fremont County, with the distribution starting Wednesday at the Boys and Girls Club. Madison said she hopes this to be one of many shoe drives in the county. “I really like doing it,” Madison said. “It’s fun to see all the different kinds of shoes.” The shoes were presented to children of the Boys and Girls Club of Fremont County. Some of the shoes also will be given to Head Start. Additionally, Madison will put boxes across Cañon City that will allow people to donate shoes that will stay in Fremont County. Boxes will be located at the Daily Record, as well as St. Thomas More Hospital and potentially KRLN Radio. Shoes that are donated

should be new or gently used. But it won’t end there. Madison, who started Madison’s Mission in Pueblo when she was 9, wants to expand her mission and will continue “as long as there is a need for shoes,” she said. So far, her efforts have helped people across the world, including places such as Haiti, Mexico and Rwanda. Madison attends Corwin International Magnet School in Pueblo and was inspired in a church program called Awana that showed her a video of a boy starting a bake sale to raise money to get Awanas into other churches. The way Madison gets shoes to other countries is through medical students at a health center where her mother works. These students take suitcases of shoes with them to other countries. Some of those who take Madison’s shoes all over the world come back with stories of how the shoes help. One story, told to Madison by mission workers in Guatemala, stood out: After girl came up to the medical tent only wearing one shoe, mission workers asked her why. The girl responded by saying that she wears one shoe until it gets worn out or her other foot gets sore. Madison also has a Facebook page called Madison’s Mission, 1 Pair at a Time.

FCT to present ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ in March By Sara Knuth The Daily Record It’s a familiar tale of an unlikely friendship. The play “Driving Miss Daisy” will be presented by the Fremont Civic Theatre during the first two weekends of March at Washington Elementary School, 606 N. Ninth St. Directed by Sherry Carpenter, the production features a cast of just three actors: Jane Ann Carver as Daisy Werthan, Rodney Garrett as Hoke Coleburn and Ira Carpenter as Boolie Werthan. The story was written by Alfred Uhry and later adapted into the Oscar-winning movie starring Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy and Dan Aykroyd. “I think it’s so touching because so many people are familiar with this story,” Carver said. “They’ll say, ‘I love that movie,’ because no matter what age you are, a lot of people have seen it.” Set from the 1940s to the ‘60s, the story follows Daisy as she gets older and starts losing the ability to do tasks she once did — including driving. Though she is initially reluctant to accept the reality, Daisy’s son Alfred hires a driver, Hoke, a black man, to take Daisy around. “This is the story of the relationship between Hoke and Daisy and Daisy being adversarial to developing the relationship with her driver,” said Pam Clark, the play’s assistant director and stage manager. Ira Carpenter added: “The civil unrest is, of course, ever-present throughout the show. It’s a big factor in the

(We) sacrifice a lot of smoke and mirrors for acting and storytelling in this play,” Ira Carpenter said. “And

it’s really important to us that people enjoy that and they get to enjoy that.” The play is set for March 2-4 and March 9-11. Friday and Saturday performances are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. On Sundays, the production will start at 2 p.m.

Special district elections will be May 8 with the selfnomination forms due at the close of business March 2. The affidavit of intent to be a write-in candidate form must be submitted to the office of the designated election official by the close of business March 5. Registration information • Please look through the program of classes. Included you will find the day, time, instructor’s name, and a brief description of the class. Each class is also assigned a CRN number. • The CRN number is used for data entry when you register for the class(es.) The CRN number for each class you want to take is REQUIRED to complete your registration. • Please note: You may be required to bring your own supplies for some courses. These supplies and/or any associated costs for the class are noted in the course description. • Select the classes you would like to take. Complete a registration form and then turn it in at the PCC Fremont Campus Office. • Payment for classes is due at the time of registration. • The registration form requires your date of birth and your signature. After your application has been processed, you will be issued a student ID number. This will be different from your Social Security number. • College students’ rights, privacy and access regarding their educational records are articulated in the Family Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), commonly known as the Buckley Amendment. The Act helps protect the privacy of student records by requiring that institutions limit the disclosure of information from these records to a third person. • The following information has been identified as directory information and is subject for release to the public under the Buckley Amendment: Student’s name, address and home telephone number. Social Security numbers are NOT disclosed. • Students will be provided with a printout of their class schedules showing course name(s), days and times. Instructors will be provided with a list of students enrolled in the class. You may not attend a class unless you have registered for it. • Locations for classes will be printed and distributed every morning during Senior Mini College, beginning on Monday, March 19. Dr. Squier honored at Mini College

Dr. Shirley A. Squier, founder of PCC Senior Mini College, is being honored with the dedication of the 33rd Senior Mini College of 2018. Dr. Squier, a Canon City resident, has been an advocate of learning in education, for all ages, throughout her career. With an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from the Flint Branch of the University of Michigan, Masters and Specialists degrees in Guidance Counseling from Central Michigan University and a Doctorate of Philosophy majoring in Community College Administration from Colorado State University at Fort Collins. Dr. Shirley worked in many different arenas of education. She began as a 5th grade teacher, middle school counselor, college counselor than the Director of Guidance at CCSS, and finally as a Director and administrator in higher education at PCC. Dr. Squier and her family relocated to Canon City in 1981 and began working at the Canon City High School as a Guidance Counselor, later, the Director of Guidance. During that time, Pueblo Community College- Fremont Campus which was then called the Canon City Center of PCC, and was housed at the Abbey. In November of 1984, Dr. Squier was hired as the Director of the PCC Assessment Center and, a year later, as the Director of the Canon City Center, which is now known as the Dean’s position at PCC- Fremont Campus.

While serving as the Director, Dr. Squier was presented with the information that the Abbey and surrounding land was being prospected by the Federal Bureau of Prisons for purchase. Dr. Squier, along with a large contingent of Fremont County citizens gathered together and raised over $100,000 to purchase land in Florence, Colorado. This land is now where the United States Federal Bureau of Prisons Complex is located. During her career at PCC from 1984-1996, Dr. Squier helped create and implement programs that are still active today. One of those beloved programs is the Senior Mini College. Dr. Squier, associate PCC colleague, Eloise Phelps, the Canon City Daily Record, and St. Thomas Moore had a vision of creating small classes for seniors. The first year they implemented the program, their goal was to fill the parking lot with cars filled with Senior Citizens. Those who were familiar to the Abbey and Canon City Center knew that this was a big undertaking. With an intended enrollment of a 100 senior students, Dr. Squier set the bar high. They were close, having 92 students for their first year. However,

Spring Break is now a known home to adult learners on the PCC Fremont Campus, thanks to Dr. Squier who has dedicated her life to serving students of all ages. She has always believed in the life-long learning concept and practice. Married for 52 years, Dr. Squier and her husband Terry, still reside in Canon City, CO. Their two children, Sherry Allen and Michael Squier and four grandchildren live outside the state of Colorado. Dr. Squier was one of the key organizers of Mountain View Core Knowledge School and served as the Administrator of the school for four years. Today she serves on the PCC Fremont Advisory Committee Board and The PCC Fremont Hall of Fame Committee. She was one of the organizers and serves on the Fremont Exceptional Women (F.E.W.) committee and the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative committee. She is an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, serving on numerous committees. Her contributions to education in Fremont County deserve to be recognized. PCC and the Fremont Senior Mini College Board, are honored to present this year’s Senior Mini College dedication to Dr. Shirley Squier.

THE AGE OF AQUARIUS THE GOLDEN AGE

The following material is given as relevant information for your personal consideration. We live in a Spiritual Universe. Our mode of living should reflect itself as an expression of our Divinity. As we look around our world we see how far we are from this Spiritual Expression. Each Age brings into incarnation that group of souls whose energies can find a consonance with prevailing energies of the Age. Considering that we have just come through the Age of Pisces, whose energy expression has been Will Power, Zealousness, and Idealism, we seem to still be experiencing this energy among a large portion of humanity. This energy was very necessary to move the Planet to a higher level of expression and fulfillment. When we look at our Country (USA) as a Microcosm of the Macrocosm of the World we can see how necessary these energy qualities were to create the World we live in today. In reviewing the lives of our grandparents and parents we can appreciate the hardships they endured, the perseverance, and the dedication to an ideal, the will power to overcome insurmountable obstacles for the fulfillment of their goals. I marvel at the zealousness, the tenacity that they demonstrated to create a better World. Now that the Age of Pisces has ended and the Age of Aquarius has begun, we are receiving a new and different energy expression. The energies for the Aquarian Age will be Synthesis and Equilibrium. Those energies will supplant the energies of Pisces. Cleavage supports the message by Jesus in the Bible’s Book of Matthew chapter ten. We see this energy of Love manifesting in a lot of the good taking place all over the world, all for the common good. We will also see this Love Energy expressing itself in dark activity of chaos and mayhem and separation all over the world.

THE EMERGENCE OF THE WORLD TEACHER - IN BRIEF All the great religions posit the idea of a further revelation to be given by a future Teacher. Christians hope for the return of the Christ, the Buddhists look for the coming of another Buddha (the Lord Maitreya), while Muslims await the Imam Mahdi, the Hindus a reincarnation of Krishna, and the Jews the Messiah. Students of the esoteric tradition know all these as different names for the same individual - the Lord Maitreya, the World Teacher, the head of the Spiritual Hierarchy of Masters, and they look for His imminent return now. In July 1977, Maitreya emerged from His centre in the Himalayas, when least expected, “like a thief in the night”. Since then, He has lived in London as an ordinary man concerned with modem problems - political, economic and social. Since March 1978, He has been emerging as a spokesman in the Pakistani-Indian community. He is not a religious leader, but an educator in the broadest sense - pointing the way out of the present world crisis. According to esoteric teaching, Maitreya manifested Himself 2,000 years ago in Palestine by overshadowing His disciple Jesus-now the Master Jesus. This time Maitreya has come Himself. Maitreya’s spiritual teaching. Maitreya does not intend to I build a new religion around Himself, nor to create followers, but to teach humanity “the art of Self-realization”. The first steps are “honesty of mind, sincerity of spirit and detachment.” Maitreya’s social concern is reflected in His list of priorities: an adequate supply of the right food, adequate housing and shelter for all, healthcare and education as a universal right. His social message can be summarized in a few words: “Share and save the world.” Maitreya knows we will accept His advice and that we are on the threshold of an era of peace and goodwill. Since late 1991, Maitreya has been carrying out a series of appearances like the one in Nairobi, Kenya. There, on 11 June 1988, He appeared miraculously, “out of the blue”, at an open-air prayer/ healing meeting. He was photographed addressing (in their own language) thousands of people who instantly recognized Him as the Christ. Similar events have now been witnessed by large numbers in different countries. In this way, more and more people receive proof of His presence and, hopefully, in due course will demand media response. Maitreya expects this approach to lead to the Day of Declaration, when He will leave no doubt that He is the World Teacher. Maitreya will mentally ‘overshadow’ all of humanity simultaneously. Each of us will hear His words inwardly, telepathically, in our own language, and all will know that the World Teacher is among us. The information about Maitreya’s emergence has been presented to the public since 1974 by Benjamin Creme, chief editor of the magazine Share International. His training for this work, under a Master of Wisdom, began in 1959.
