Phil’s Barber Shop now on Main Street Phil’s Barber Shop has settled into a new home on Main Street. Owner Brandon Smith and his mob moved to 508 Main St. recently as the barber shop is celebrating its fourth anniversary. Smith and fellow barbers, Aaron Vigil and Kevin Strait, said they loved their previous location, but overtime, they outgrew the space and wanted to grow and provide an experience for their clients more than just getting haircuts. Clients who are waiting for a cut now can enjoy a game of pool or play mini arcade. Phil’s Barber Shop prides itself on its vintage feel to make customers feel like it’s the 1930s. Each haircut comes with a hot lather, neck shave. The business is well-known for its straight razor fades and shaves. The business offers two options, the “Phil’s Custom Shave,” which is a basic straight razor, smooth shave and the most popular the “Capone Vintage Shave,” which is a more detailed facial and shave. Smith decided to get his barber license in 2008. After acquiring his license, he brought in Vigil

July 9, 1920 - February 4, 2018 After living a dedicated life serving her Lord, Vivien Boyce of Cañon City, Colorado died peacefully at home on February 4, 2018 at the age of 97. She was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma on July 9, 1920. She was married to Ralph Boyce on December 29, 1940 in Homestead, Oklahoma. She graduated high school at the age of 16 and received a Bachelor of Music degree at the age of 19 and immediately began a teaching career which spanned 41 years in Missouri, Oklahoma and Colorado. Music was always important to her. She was active in the music ministry at her church her whole life and for about a decade, until the age of 92, she was the pianist for the Red Bow Tie Group in Cañon City. She enjoyed leading Bible studies in the Christian Women’s Association in Howard, Colorado and she also volunteered in the Cañon City Prison Ministry for many years. She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years and seven siblings. She is survived by her brother, Karl Strader of Lakeland, Florida; and her five children, Donna (Leroy) Ferrell, John, Barb (Curt) Webb, Phil (Diana) Boyce and Greg (Julie) Boyce; 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She will be remembered for her strong faith in God, strong morals, quick wit and courageous spirit. Special thanks to her loving caregivers, Linda, Becky, her grandchild Laura and Sangre de Cristo Hospice. A memorial service for friends and family will be held on February 19, 2018 at 10 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church, 3000 E. Main Street in Cañon City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to Loaves and Fishes Ministry in Cañon City.
Wilma Louise Hudson Young October, 3, 1930 - February 9, 2018 Wilma Louise Hudson Young was born on October, 3, 1930 in Willow, Arkansas and died February 9, 2018 in Yukon, OK. She was predeceased by her parents John Bradley Hudson and Cameron Lawrence Hudson, brothers Wallace Hudson, Harvey Hudson, Dewey Hudson, and Hugh Hudson, and sisters - Beatrice Hudson Tommy and Virginia Hudson Land. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Nolen Young, two daughters, Renee Grannis and Janice Larson, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews too numerous to mention. She also held a special place in her heart for Robert Young, a relative that came to stay, play, and eventually grow into the cherished son she never had. Wilma was a dutiful military wife for 27 years and accompanied her husband all over the world. She enjoyed traveling and seeing new things. After retiring from the military, she and her husband started Young’s Drilling and Pump Service in Cañon City, Colorado and this kept her active for another 20 years. She thoroughly enjoyed meeting and working with customers from all over the US. She was so successful at this that Robert Young was able to continue the business when she and her husband finally retired for good. Full retirement allowed Wilma and her husband to travel in a motor coach for more than 20 years exploring different parts of her beloved United States. In the past 10 years, she has been slowing down and told everyone that she has earned a permanent place in her recliner. Jesus called her home on the morning of February 9 from her living room. That was what she wanted. She will be laid to rest in Malvern, Arkansas.

Mary Lou Nelson March 29, 1941 - February 11, 2018 Mary Lou Nelson was born in Cañon City on March 29, 1941 and died in Cañon City on February 11, 2018. She is survived by her husband, Leonard “Steve”; daughter, Laura Elizabeth (Brad) Gordon and grandson, Henry-all of St. Paul, Minnesota; sisters, Jackie and Judie Moorhead, of Buena Vista; sister-in-law, Suzanne (Tom) Coleman; nephews, Chris (Crystal) and Michael (Holly), all of Cañon City; sister-in-law, Becky Moorhead of Granbury Texas; niece, Tracey Howe of San Antonio, Texas; and nephew, Craig (Jillyn)Howe of Colorado Springs; nephew, John (Leela) Smith of West Jordon, Utah and nephew, Jeff Smith of Fort Collins, Colorado; great-nieces, Sarah, Andrea, Baylee, and Lucy; and great-nephews, Nicholas, Carter, Keaton, Dylan, Mason, and Gavin. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, Louise and Nelson Moorhead; and brother, William Wesley “Butch” Moorhead. Mary Lou and her husband graduated together in 1959 from Cañon City High School. Following high school she attended CSU-Fort Collins and graduated with honors, first with her BA degree and then with her MA in business education. Mary Lou and Leonard married on June 16, 1963 in the First Baptist Church of Cañon City. They moved to the Denver area where Mary Lou taught business and office education in the Westminster Schools for 34 years. She was very active in promoting vocational education at both the local and state level. The highlight of her career was being elected president of the Colorado Vocational Association (CVA.) Mary Lou retired from teaching in 1997 and when Leonard also retired they moved back to Cañon City. Here Mary Lou selected to give back to the community from which she acquired so much--especially the core basics: integrity, values, and ethics. She was very active in the United Presbyterian Church serving as Church Clerk, teaching Sunday school, singing in the Chancel Choir, and participating in Gloria dei Circle. She was one of the founders of the Greenwood Pioneer Committee and served as its president for many years. She soon discovered Senior Mini College and served on the advisory board as well as teaching classes. She involved herself in the Fremont Retired School Employees Association serving as co-president with her longtime friend (also from the Westminster schools,) Lorraine Kennec. In her “spare” time Mary Lou enjoyed traveling with friends and family. She took road trips from coast to coast but she especially loved cruising. Together she and Leonard saw much of the world during their 30 plus cruises. Visitation, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, February 15, at Holt Family Chapel of the Garden. Paul Standford Owens Paul Standford Owens, Vietnam Combat Veteran, sadly passed away on Feb. 11, 2018 at his home in Cañon City at the age 74. He was born July 29, 1943, in St. Louis, Mo., where he was raised by his parents Joe and Durlene Vickers. In 1964, he joined the Army and was first stationed in Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. He also spent time stationed on several other army bases, including one year in Korea. In 1966 he was sent by boat to Vietnam where he spent fourteen long, excruciating months. He was a Vietnam Combat Veteran, and considered that one of his greatest feats. In 1967, he was awarded his Combat Badge, The United States Defense Service Medal, Korea and Vietnam Defense Service Medal, Expert Rifleman Badge, a plaque for Loyal and Faithful service along with numerous other honors. He was President and Vice President of the Florence Chamber of Commerce, President of the Retail Merchants Association, served on the Board of Directors of the Bicentennial Commission, and started and organized the Volunteer Fire Department in Jadwin MO where he also owned and operated BJ’s Outpost. While living in Fremont County, he and Gloria owned and operated Gamble’s Hardware Store for several years. He

also donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Shriners, and the Wounded Warrior Project. Paul had a passion for fishing, and riding motorcycles in his younger days. He also loved to spend time trying his luck at the casinos. His favorite term of endearment was, “you fruit!” Nothing brought him more joy than bringing happiness to others, especially his family. They were what he cherished most in life. He was generous, unselfish, and always there to lend a helping hand when he was able. He was, and always will be loved and cherished by all that knew him. While enlisted in the Army, he met and fell in love with Gloria Villagrana. They married in 1966 and had two daughters, Deb and Denise. Paul is survived by his ex-wife, Gloria Owens; daughters Deb Rall and Denise (Steve) Warren; grandchildren Ashley Rall (Eric Embry), Brandon Rix, and Jordan Rix; and one great-grandchild Preston Rall. He was one of eight brothers, of which he is survived by four: Buzz (Maria Elena) Vickers, Bradley (Norma) Vickers, Dennis (Kathy) Vickers, and Richard (Lara) Vickers. He was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Durlene Vickers, brothers Steve and Stan Owens, and Kenneth Vickers, nephew Bradley Vickers Jr, and niece Cristina Vickers. Hildebrand recognized for improving quality care Hildebrand Care Center in Cañon City was recognized by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living for its achievements through the Quality Initiative Recognition Program, which honors member facilities for their individual work in achieving quality initiative goals. Hildebrand met or exceeded six of the eight goals. “The entire team at Hildebrand Care Center is honored to be recognized for this incredible achievement,” said Jim Burrell, administrator of Hildebrand Care Center. “We are proud to improve care for our patients and residents. Our commitment to quality will continue.” Specifically, Hildebrand accomplished goals in areas including reducing antipsychotic use, reducing the need

Group seeks to rebuild Cotopaxi home that was destroyed in fire By Sara Knuth The Daily Record Less than two months after losing her home of 25 years to a fire, a Cotopaxi woman is getting help to clear the ashes and rebuild on the same property. Friends of Judith Overy Field, whose house was destroyed in a Dec. 20 fire, started an effort this month to build a new home. With general contractor Chris Jenkins of Jenkins Homes already on board to help, the group is seeking donations from the community to push the effort along. “She’s not a person that would ask for anything,” said Martha Starr, the effort’s organizer and friend who got to know Field through their work at the Pantry of Fremont. “But she’s a person who deserves to have her home rebuilt.” Field, a board member for the food pantry, wasn’t home when the fire started. Instead, she was on her way back to the house after having lunch with her son when she received a call from a neighbor that the home was in flames. The fire is believed to have started at the hot water tank. While her two dogs were saved, Field lost two cats and several sentimental items. The ashes of her late son, Jerry Thomas Hoglan, whose body was found near Texas Creek in November, also were inside the home when the fire started. Authorities have not released more information about the death. As part of the group’s effort to re-
build, volunteers are asking for donations of any amount. Starr emphasized that the entire effort will be a result of donations and people who volunteer to help Field, who lives on a fixed income and doesn’t have home insurance. For Starr, it’s also a chance to help someone who has given years of service to the community through the Pantry, where she still volunteers. “That woman is there all the time giving and she has given, given, given for years,” Starr said. “So, she’s so deserving.” As the build progresses, Starr said the group plans to “do a ‘house raising’ to frame it,” similar to a barn raising. Volunteers will be responsible for “everything from the framing to the final work,” she said. Once the home is completed, it will be a place for Field to live with her dogs. Since the fire, she has been staying temporarily with friends. To help with the effort, donate by going to any Sunflower Bank location or mail donations to Judith A. THE EMERGENCE OF THE WORLD TEACHER - IN BRIEF All the great religions posit the idea of a further revelation to be given by a future Teacher. Christians hope for the return of the Christ, the Buddhists look for the coming of another Buddha (the Lord Maitreya), while Muslims await the Imam Mahdi, the Hindus a reincarnation of Krishna, and the Jews the Messiah. Students of the esoteric tradition know all these as different names for the same individual - the Lord Maitreya, the World Teacher, the head of the Spiritual Hierarchy of Masters, and they look for His imminent return now. In July 1977, Maitreya emerged from His centre in the Himalayas, when least expected, “like a thief in the night”. Since then, He has lived in London as an ordinary man concerned with modem problems - political, economic and social. Since March 1978, He has been emerging as a spokesman in the Pakistani-Indian community. He is not a religious leader, but an educator in the broadest sense - pointing the way out of the present world crisis. According to esoteric teaching, Maitreya manifested Himself 2,000 years ago in Palestine by overshadowing His disciple Jesus-now the Master Jesus. This time Maitreya has come Himself. Maitreya’s spiritual teaching. Maitreya does not intend to I build a new religion around Himself, nor to create followers, but to teach humanity “the art of Self-realization”. The first steps are “honesty of mind, sincerity of spirit and detachment.” Maitreya’s social concern is reflected in His list of priorities: an adequate supply of the right food, adequate housing and shelter for all, healthcare and education as a universal right. His social message can be summarized in a few words: “Share and save the world.” Maitreya knows we will accept His advice and that we are on the threshold of an era of peace and goodwill. Since late 1991, Maitreya has been carrying out a series of appearances like the one in Nairobi, Kenya. There, on 11 June 1988, He appeared miraculously, “out of the blue”, at an open-air prayer/ healing meeting. He was photographed addressing (in their own language) thousands of people who instantly recognized Him as the Christ. Similar events have now been witnessed by large numbers in different countries. In this way, more and more people receive proof of His presence and, hopefully, in due course will demand media response. Maitreya expects this approach to lead to the Day of Declaration, when He will leave no doubt that He is the World Teacher. Maitreya will mentally ‘overshadow’ all of humanity simultaneously. Each of us will hear His words inwardly, telepathically, in our own language, and all will know that the World Teacher is among us.
