Mary R. Martinez
November 9, 1931~ July 18, 2018 Mary R. Martinez, 86, of Canon City passed away July 18, 2018 surrounded by her large, loving family. She was born November 9, 1931 in Coaldale, Colorado to Gus and Jennie Medina. Mary married Freddie Martinez on November 27, 1952. She worked for many years at the Ramada and Quality Inn as a housekeeper. In her spare time, she loved to play card with family, take trips to Cripple Creek, travel, and go camping. She is survived by her sons, Fred, Victor (Janet), Joe, Ernie (Donna), Bea (Jim Gindro) Cash, Cinda (Don) Atencio, Nancy (Kory) Barth; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and five great-greatgrandchildren; brother, Arthur; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Medina, Theresa Whitney, Betty Martinez; brothers-in-law, Rueben (Rafaelita), Johnny,
Joe(Carol), and Abel Martinez along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Freddie; parents; her sisters, Della, Benita, Priscilla, Ernestine; brothers, Lawrence and Johnny Medina; grandson, Anothony Martinez; and great grand-daughter Riley DiLaura. Susan Irene Dotts-Jackson May 20, 1957 ~ July 15, 2018
Susan Irene Dotts-Jackson, 61, passed away July 15, 2018 in Penrose, Colorado. Our beloved mother and wife, was born May 20, 1957 in Byers, Colorado to Dale and Norma (Prvett) Dotts. She attended Buyers Public High School and graduated in 1975. Continuing her education, she received her BS in Criminal Justice at Mesa State and her Masters at Regis University. She devoted 21 years to her career as a Juvenile Corrections Officer at Colorado Division Youth Services. In her retirement, despite having Parkinson's disease, she continued her desire to help troubled youth and became a foster parent for at risk youth. Together, with Andrew Jackson, she continued her passion for helping people by becoming a host home provider for developmentally-disabled adults.
They moved to Penrose, Colorado in 2014 and enjoyed their constantly growing farm and their love of horses and all things furry and feathery. Susan was also an avid gardener and loved her flowerbeds and vegetable gardens. She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her husband, Andrew Jackson; her children, Nick Dotts and Patrick Bowe; and the many friends she considered family, all of whom loved being near her and will continue to carry her forever in their hearts. Susan was preceded in death by her mother, Norma Jean Dotts and father, Dale Oliver Dotts. A small service will be held at Penrose Park at noon on Friday July 20th. Christine "Kris" Stenzel, 58, of Canon City, passed away unexpectedly July 18, 2018. She was born July 25, 1959 to Philip and Dorothy (Stilnovich) Baccarella in Florence, CO. She graduated from Florence High School in 1977 where she was a Varsity Cheerleader. After high school she moved to Canon City and began her career at City Market where she retired July 1st 2018 after 39 years. Many will remember. Kris for how much she loved her family, children and grandchildren. She was most full of joy watching her kids and grandkids competing in sports, camping and watching the Broncos and Rockies. She is survived by her mother Dorothy; husband Ted of 25 years; children

Community celebrates Journey Home’s completion Carie Canterbury The Daily Record
Just one year and four days after the groundbreaking for Journey Home, a three-story, 30-unit permanent supportive housing project, officials and community members gathered to celebrate the project’s completion with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony. “We can call this ‘Journey of Hope,’ because a lot of people that we’re helping have lost that hope, and now they’re getting it,” said Cañon City Mayor Preston Troutman during the event Tuesday at 250 Justice Center Road, “not only because of the skills that they are now receiving but also because they now have a safe home to live in.” Journey Home first opened its doors to 45 individuals in June. When they were moving in, one of the residents said if he hadn’t been accepted to Journey Home, he would be dead, said Autumn Dever, the Regional Housing Director for the Upper Arkansas Area Council of Governments. “He explained that he wouldn’t have survived the summer because of the heat and his disability while living in his car,” Dever said. Other residents include a single mom who was living in her car with her disabled child, a teenager who had been living under a tarp, a young man who slept outside wherever he could find a safe place, and a mom who was taken advantage of and sold a condemned mobile home. Of the 45 people living at Journey Home, 14 are children — 10 of whom are under the age of 6, and four are disabled; 15 heads of household are disabled; the average age of the heads

that each household was homeless was 12 or more months.” Journey Home, the first homeless housing project built in a rural Colorado community, combines housing with access to support services and connects residents with case management, mental health treatment and vocational training.
“One of my employees told me that she went home every night in tears from listening to the stories of the residents and also because she was touched to be part of this,” Dever said. “This whole process reminded me why I do what I do.” DeeDee Clement, the executive director of Loaves & Fishes Ministries, said
since the residents moved in just 47 days ago, she has seen the unemployed become employed, and medical and mental health issues now being addressed. “Families are being restored, and for many, this is the first time that they have lived in a community environment again,” she said. Journey Home resident Nancy Reeder, 56, proudly opened her apartment for tours Tuesday. She had been couch surfing since 2009, and she spent the last 10 months living at the emergency shelter at Loaves & Fishes. “I love it,” she said about her new apartment. “We walked in here and everything was ready, all we had to do was put our clothes away. The ladies who set up my room even brought me food.” Her favorite part of the apartment is the bathroom. “I’ve never had a bathroom this huge,” she said. Clement said with some individuals and families still living in tents in the area, the need for housing still exists. Journey Home is the re-
sult of a unique partnership between Loaves & Fishes Ministries and Cardinal Capital Management, Inc. (Cardinal Capital). It is part of a statewide effort to strengthen the continuum of services available to Colorado’s vulnerable homeless population and its housing-first approach helps those in crisis address employment, health concerns, substance use, and other issues that may have been neglected in the day-to-day struggle to survive on the streets. Financed with equity raised from federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits awarded by Colorado Housing and Finance Authority, and 30 Project-based Housing Choice Vouchers provided by Colorado Department of Local Affairs’ Division of Housing and administered by the Upper Arkansas Area Council of Governments, occupancy of all 30 units will be restricted to households with annual incomes of less than 50 percent of area median income. However, the income of the typical resident will be below the poverty line.

Cañon City School District undergoing upgrades thanks to BEST grant Chris Graham The Daily Record
Many Cañon City students left their schools for summer break expecting to come back to the same building that they left. But that won’t be the case for students of Cañon City High School, McKinley Elementary School and Lincoln School of Science and Technology as the schools are undergoing major renovations this summer. “I’d hasten a guess to say that there has never been a larger reconstruction of this school district in the history of our community,” Cañon City School Board Treasurer Shad Johnson said. The schools are receiving a number of improvements, but something that all the schools will upgrade is an increase in security. The upgrades to security are mainly two features: a new lockdown button that goes in all classrooms and new entrances or catch spaces at the main entrances to the schools. Cañon City Middle School and Washington Elementary School also will have similar features when the new schools are built by the 2019-2020 school year. “One of the aspects of all these projects is to make the entries more secure,” Superintendent George Welsh said. The lockdown button is similar to a fire alarm. When pressed, it sets off an alarm with a different sound than the fire alarm to signal the locking of doors and for students to hide in a corner that cannot be seen from the door. “All the research we have seen shows locked actually save lives; a person is not going to waste bullets on a door,” Welsh said. For the entrances, some schools, such as CCHS, Lincoln and Harrison, will receive a catch space, which is a space after entering the front door that requires a staff member or security guard to allow a person to go through the second set of doors. This allows more security for schools so that every entry through the front door is monitored, and if someone enters that isn’t allowed, that person can’t get into the school. While some schools, such as McKinley, won’t have a catch space, the front door will be locked and there will be a window that a person can talk to a staff member to be allowed access. Many of the windows in these areas also will be reinforced with bulletproof glass to prevent a potential shooter from shooting his way through the catch space of the entrance. CCHS is receiving the biggest amount of renovation with new windows throughout the school, new skylights in the main gym, new Americans with Disabilities Act restrooms that are closer to the special education classroom, new tiles and an ADA section in the locker rooms. Also in the gym, all of the HVAC units now will work as before only two of them worked. With the skylights, there will be 15 total skylights down from the previous

With the new six-foot iron fence, it will allow for those doors to be left unlocked and for a little more security for that area. Both McKinley and Lincoln are receiving similar renovations that include repiping of the water system, new windows and frames, new carpets and some new doors. With the new windows, it will allow students to view the outside while allowing light inside the classroom and the windows are also going to be insulated. “Not only is it lighting the classroom, but when you talk about classrooms that are more interactive for the kids for them to be and see outside, it’s huge in the world of education,” Johnson said. Cañon City School District names new middle school principal Chris Graham The Daily Record Cañon City Middle School has a new principal as part of some changes to the district’s staff. During Monday’s school board meeting, current Director of Special Services Lynnette Steinhoff resigned to accept a position in Douglas County. Steinhoff’s position was filled by CCMS principal Tim Renn. “Mr. Renn has done a fantastic job at the middle school over the last several years, and it’s my opinion that he is director material,” Superintendent George Welsh said. With Renn leaving to become the new director of special services, assistant principal Jesse Oliver will become the new CCMS principal. “I have heard nothing but sadness out of staff that Tim is going but thrilled that Jesse will be taking his spot,” Welsh said. “They feel a sense of continuity.” Steinhoff has been the director of special services at the school district for two years, and before that, she was an associate manager for the office of community partnerships/drop out prevention and engagement at the Colorado Department of Education.
Jesse Oliver Renn has been the principal of CCMS for two years. He previously was a principal at a K-8 school in Huerfano County. Renn also served as a middle school teacher and administrator in the Greeley District for 14 years. Oliver is a native of Fremont County who grew up in Penrose and graduated from Florence High School in 2000 and became an assistant principal in the start of the summer this year. He was previously the dean of students and athletic director. Oliver started his career in education at Southern Peaks Regional Treatment Center, teaching special education, social studies and physical education, then at Florence High School, where he taught social studies and gifted and talented education. He also sponsored the school’s Destination Imagination program and coached wrestling.

New project is breeding positive behavior at FHS Chris Graham The Daily Record

But at Florence High School they are honoring students that might not make honor roll or participate in athletics but work just as hard. “It’s a way to try to make it possible for every kid to be successful at FHS,” said Ellen Johnson, who is one of the coordinators of a new Positive Behavior Support project. Through a new project based learning system, that
is called Positive Behavior Support, students were able to win prizes because of some of the positive things that they did at school. That could be from helping move furniture, not showing up tardy when that student normally does, or just being a good role model and spreading positivity. “It’s anything to acknowledge good positive community based support behavior,” said Johnson. A staff member, which ranges from the principal to a janitor, that notices a student promoting positive behavior will give the student an “I won the day” card and enter that student into a drawing to win prizes.
“It’s easy to start forgetting the ones that are more challenging but alot of the ones that are more challenging come right around when there is a prize to be won,” Johnson said. This prizes can be cash, free meals, merchandise and gift cards from local businesses. Prizes are drawn every month and there was a big final drawing at the end of the semester. All the prizes were donated by local businesses from Florence and Cañon City. Students that were apart of this Positive Behavior Support project would travel around to local businesses and ask for donations to help support this project.
Some students even did a PSA over the radio to help garner donations. While some of the students would be traveling to local business other would be surveying the school asking students what kind of prizes they would like to see, as well as surveying staff about what kind of actions are worth being acknowledged. In total, the project has around 13 students working on it ranging from freshman to seniors.
