Thomas E. Alston

August 14, 1934 ~ May 25, 2019 Thomas E. Alston died May 25, 2019. He was born August 14, 1934 in Colorado Springs, to Thomas R. and Edna (Skinner) Alston. He married his high school sweetheart, Janice R. (Goins) Alston on Dec. 27, 1952. They were married for 56 years until her death Dec. 2008. He joined the Navy in 1952 and was an Aviation Electronics Technician First Class. The couple lived in numerous places all over the United States. Tom retired from the Navy in 1974 after 22 years of service. After his military service the family moved back to Colorado where they owned and operated The Rocky Mt. Grocery Store in Florence, CO. The business closed in 1978. He then went to work for the Colorado Department of Corrections from where he later retired. Tom also "moonlighted" as a TV repairman and owned Tom's Twidget TV repair shop in Florence, CO. Tom enjoyed working in the yard and tinkering in his greenhouse where he grew many special flowers. He enjoyed his K-9 companions and loved a fine or cheap cigar. Dad was always

up for a story session or two about his days spent flying all over the world while in the Navy. He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Lesher; son, Zachary "Scott" (Sheilla) Alston; grandchildren, Stephanie (Javier) Reyes, Matthew Prater, Chad(Amber Derryberry) Lesher, Morgan (Ashley Gleb) Lesher, Shalina (Brandon) Barlow, Zachary K. Alston; great-grandchildren, Michael and Brandon Hooks, Christopher "Topher" Larson-Prater, Chelsea and Mackenzie Barlow; sisters, Thelma Kimberlin, Grace Tamlin, and Rita Willey. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jan; parents; son, Marc K. Alston, daughter, Cynthia R. Prater, grandson, Christopher J. Prater, two sisters and a brother. Viewing will be 9:30AM-10:30AM on Friday, May 31, 2019, Holt Chapel of the Garden, 806 Macon Avenue, Canon City, CO followed by a graveside service at Lakeside Cemetery at 11:00AM. Donna Evelyn (Hall) Coleman October 21, 1925 - May 28, 2019

Donna Evelyn (Hall) Coleman of Howard passed away May 28 at age 93. Mrs. Coleman lived in Southern Colorado all her life and was from a proud pioneer family. Donna was born to George and Edith Hall, October 21, 1925, at the family homestead in Wetmore, Colorado. Her ancestors helped settle the region. Grandparents Gus and Kate Hall arrived in the 1890s and Grandfather Jacob Betts arrived in the 1870s. Donna graduated from Custer County High School in 1943 and married her high school sweetheart, Thomas "Gene" Coleman, after he returned from the war. Together they leave behind three children: Sheryl Coleman of Scottsdale,

AZ; Larry (Cathy) Coleman of Canon City, CO; and Kimberly (Robert) Burns of Leesburg, VA. Gene preceded her in death in 2014. They are also survived by five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Pleasant Valley Club for 50 years and held every office. She was particularly proud to be instrumental in raising funds for and building the Howard Hall. She donated many books to help start the community library at the Howard Firehouse. Donna was a skilled candy maker and created delicious fudges, mints, caramels and suckers. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 3 at 11AM at the Cotopaxi Church.

Michael "Danny" Scavarda May 30, 1947 ~ May 23, 2019

Michael "Danny" Scavarda, 71, passed away in his home in Canon City, Colorado on Thursday, May 23rd, 2019. He was born in Canon City, Colorado to Michael P. and Catherine M. (Yekovich) Scavarda. During his life he spent significant parts of his life in Pueblo, Fort Collins, and across Colorado. He leaves behind his daughter, Cindy (Greg) Leary; brother, Jerry (Lynn) Scavarda; uncle, Tom Tella; cousin, Tommy (Charly) Tella;

grandchildren, Quinn & Mae; nieces, Lynsey (Evan) & Kendall (Spencer), along with many wonderful friends that he also considered to be his family. Denny Ward Stately April 4, 1989 ~ May 23, 2019

The world lost a beautiful human being on May 23, 2019. Denny was born in Orange, California on April 4, 1989. He and his family lived in Southern California until 2000 when they moved to Canon City, Colorado. Life in Colorado was full of joy as he entered McKinley school. He graduated in 2007 from Canon City High School. He loved the world, treasured every minute and never met a person he didn't like. His joy uplifted everyone who met him. Colorado was his home and farming his passion. Those that knew him called him farmer, artist, musician, philosopher, shredder, brother and friend. Also, he was a lover of life, of people and of the earth. He is survived by his beloved son, Denny Eligh Stately; his parents, Denny David Stately and Michelle Christine (Meredith) Stately; grandparents, Michael and Jeri (Province) Stately of Canon City, Sharon (Leighton) Meredith of California, and Denny Wilson of Montana; along with his aunts, uncles, and cousins from coast to coast adored him and called him their own. He left this world better than he found it, planting seeds of joy and love wherever he

went. He adored his life as a farmer and his historic home. He left quietly as he desired. Love his memory as he loved yours. A celebration of life will be held at Stately Farms, 1607 Sherman Avenue, Canon City, CO on Saturday June 1, 2019 with open house from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. This date also celebrates the 10th year of his son's birth. Denny E. Stately was truly the best gift his papa ever received. Overflow parking will be at Rouse Park and the Trolley will bring you to and from the farm. Marti Lawrence Wolf July 13, 1959 - December 25, 2018

Marti Lawrence Wolf was born on July 13, 1959 to William and Thelma Jean Lawrence in Ann Arbor, MI. She passed away on Dec. 25, 2018. Marti was preceded in death by her mother, Jean and her beloved husband, Carl. She is survived by her father, Bill; brothers, Brian and Scott; niece, Jenny; and nephew, Scott. Marti was an award winning artist with a Masters degree in Humanities. Her love of art and learning led her to teach at the Denver Institute of Art, C.U., U S.C. Pueblo and Pueblo Community College. She taught children as well, both in Denver

and in Canon City at Mountain View Core Knowledge and through workshops with the Canon City Art Center. Marti loved creating and showing her art. Her last project was as a co-founder of Solo Art Gallery in Canon City. Marti was old fashioned, warm, and kind. She was independent and adventurous, traveling and camping often. She left a lasting impression on everyone she met. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at Cara Fisher Square, 5th & Macon in Canon City, CO on Sat. June 8th at 1:00pm. Bell Tower in Florence to host art, theater camp The popular Children’s Summer Art Camp and Theater Camp are again being offered by the Bell Tower Cultural Center in Florence. Art Camp is presented in June and is four separate camps (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with an hour lunch break in the park. Children of all skill levels may participate for one week up to all four weeks. The junior class accommodates ages 7 through 10 and the senior class is for ages 11 and up. The classes are being taught by outstanding area artists and are a wonderful opportunity for children to experience various art techniques. Week one is June 4, 5, 6; week two is June 11, 12, 13; week three is June 18, 19, 20; and week four is 25, 26, 27. Cost per week: member $20/non member $25. For the second child in a family: member $15/non member $20 per week. There is a maximum of 15 students per class. The students are asked to provide their own sack lunch, and snacks will be provided. Theater Camp is a two-week camp, running the weeks of July 22 and July 29. Open to children ages 5 through 15, the camp runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday each week. The show performance of “Princess and the Pea” will be at 1 p.m. Aug. 2. The students must enroll in both weeks. The cost is members $35/non members $45 for the two-week camp, with a $10 discount for multiple children in the same family. The Children’s Musical Theater Program is directed by Retired Music Teacher Doris Petro and Retired Drama and Art Teacher Sharon Whelan. FAR to host Bike Ride at Bridge & Park on June 6

A great deal in the world has changed since 1929, but two things have stayed the same: the Royal Gorge Bridge still stands tall, and bicycling remains one of America’s favorite pastimes. On June 6, Fremont Adventure Recreation invites bicyclists of all ages and abilities to take a ride across the Royal Gorge Bridge in celebration of the park’s 90 years and Fremont County’s cycling history. This unique event is open to all those who love cycling, outdoor recreation, and history. The ride will start at the Visitor’s Center and continue downhill to the Bridge, where cyclists will cross the ¼-mile span of the bridge, which overlooks the Arkansas River and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The group will then stop in at the Bridge View BBQ, where participants can opt to purchase a meal or beverage. The park will stay open until 8 p.m. for cyclists so that they can watch the sun begin to set over the incredible vista. Cañon City has a long-standing cycling history, with advertisements for cycling shops showing up in the Daily Record as early as 1898. “In 1898 during the Fruit Day Celebration, Cañon City actually hosted bicycle races,” said Kathleen Eaton, education coordinator with the Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center. “We have articles that talk about races

at ‘Bicycle Park’ in front of the penitentiary. They list off the awards they won, including a $25 medal and a $25 suit and even a $10 pair of pants.” A cycling group also existed in Cañon City, with members proudly posing for a photo on Main Street in 1906. Participants of the June 6 ride are encouraged to gather at the front of the Visitor’s Center of the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park at 6 p.m. to ride together across the bridge. “I would suggest that anyone who loves riding comes out to the Royal Gorge Trails that day and enjoys a ride on their own before they meet up with us at 6 p.m. There are trails for all abilities and it’s an incredible trail system,” said Ashlee Sack, FAR’s coordinator. Maps of trails can be found on trailforks.com, mtbproject.com, and on FAR’s website at joinFAR. org/trails. The event is free to participants who hold a season pass to the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park. All others can purchase a day pass for just $18 and participate in the ride. Dinner will be available for purchase at the Bridge View BBQ on the South Side of the park. This event is weather-dependent. Participants should be sure that their bike is in good working order and will be required to wear a helmet.

Florence Farmers’ Market to open for 12th year The Florence Farmers’ Market announces the opening of their 12th year on June 6 in beautiful Pioneer Park in Florence. More than 200 students at Harrison K-8 School collaborated to design and create the new larger-than-life “Harrison Spirit Mural” that prominently graces the front of the school, welcoming visitors and reflecting the school’s culture. Heidi Hubinger, the middle school art instructor, spearheaded the project in conjunction with her students and the elementary school students, led by elementary art teacher Suzanne Cooper. Students in some of the elementary and all of the second-semester middle school art classes brainstormed ideas for the mural subject matter and created a survey for all of the staff and students to participate in and chose their favorite topics. Topics included in the mural include the students’ future, the school’s mascot – the Hawks, music, art, technology and other content areas, creativity and imagination, Colorado, sports, unity, community, and the school’s culture of Kids at Hope (Every Young Person is Capable of Success… No Exceptions!) and RISE (Responsibility, Integrity, Service and Encouraging Optimism). The mural also features a lily in memory of Lilyana “Lily” Marie Zweig, an eighthgrade student who drowned April 25 while swimming with her three brothers near her home. ‘It was an all-school effort,’ Hubinger said. Pueblo-based Matte Refic, a professional mural artist, offered guidance to the students and helped to do some fine tuning of the panels. Others who helped with materials or time include Harrison PTO, Royal Gorge Artists’ Guild, Jeff Peterson and district’s grounds crew and Sonny’s ACE Home Center.

Tickets on sale for annual Rotary Rubber Ducky Derby

The annual Rotary Rubber Ducky Derby on July 4 in Florence is right around the corner. The Rotary Rubber Ducky Derby is a cooperative effort between the Rotary Club of Cañon City and the Florence and Eastern Fremont Rotary Club. Ducky Race nonprofits have their tickets in hand and are ready to sell. The participating nonprofits are Boys and Girls Club, Cañon Literacy Center, Florence Fun Fest, Fremont Center for the Arts, Fremont Search & Rescue, Golden Age Center, Habitat for Humanity, Humane Society of Fremont County, Kindred Kids Child Advocacy Center, Loaves & Fishes, PEO Chapter, The Pantry of Fremont and Venture Crew 121. From mid-April to early June, local non-profit partners have exclusive ticket selling rights and keep 40 percent of their proceeds.
