Eleanor Knopp

October 15, 1913 ~ February 4, 2019 Eleanor Knopp, age 105, passed away at her home February 4, 2019. She was a lifetime resident of Canon City, Colorado, were she taught for 36 years. Eleanor was born October 15, 1913 to Fred and Clara (Smaller) Hammel in Canon City, Colorado. She married her first husband George Martin who was a WWII casualty on March 1, 1945. Five years later she would marry Harlan Knopp and together they would raise Gary Martin, her son. She always felt education was important and earned her degree in Home Economics often dropping out of school to earn enough money to pay for her schooling. After receiving her degree, she taught at Canon City High School, where she herself graduated in 1933. After retiring in the 1960s she traveled all over North America and saw many of the sights both here and in Canada. She was a member of the PEO AC Chapter and extremely involved at her church,

United Presbyterian Church. She credits her healthy lifestyle and the love of her family and God for her long life. She was quoted to say "I loved my church. I loved my family and I loved my job. Whatever I was doing, I was happy." She is survived by her son, Gary (Georgia) Martin; grandsons, Richard (Debbie) Martin, Nolan (Nicole) Martin; granddaughter, Julia (Jeff) Schmidt and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband's George Martin and Harlan Knopp. A memorial service will be held in her honor 11:00 a.m. Saturday February 9, 2019 at Wilson Funeral Home, 1449 S. 9th Street Canon City, Colorado 81212. Charles Alfred Hastings II December 25, 1977 ~ January 31, 2019

Charles left this world peacefully from his home in Pueblo, CO. Chaz was a charismatic, playful and fun loving person who cared about the people around him. He was taken from this world too soon and will be sorely missed. Tom Villagrana

February 26, 1958 - January 30, 2019 On January 30, 2019, Tom Villagrana united with his heavenly family after a long difficult battle with cancer. He was born to John and Gwen Villagrana in Florence on February 26, 1958. He was well known in the radio industry as Tom Chase and became the news director at KDZA. He had several #1 shows in his career, that started in Canon

City at the young age of 16 and took him as far as Tampa, Florida. Tom was an avid Bronco fan and was very active in many various sports. He loved his family and friends and will be deeply missed. A Celebration of Life will be Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 12:30 p.m. at the VFW (215 N Cottonwood) in Canon City.

Karen Jen Neet

May 18, 1943 - January 8, 2019 Karen Jen Neet, 75, passed away on January 8, 2019, at her home in Pueblo West, Colorado. She went peacefully with her husband and daughters by her side. Karen struggled with non-hodgkins lymphoma for 17 months before complications from the cancer ended her life. She was born on May 18, 1943, in Trinidad, Colorado, to Leonard and Alice (Sakariason) Hainlen. Karen grew up primarily on her parent's farm/ranch in Bon Carbo, Colorado, where she loved riding bareback on her horse, Frisco. She graduated from Trinidad High School in 1961. After high school, she attended Trinidad State Junior College graduating with an Associate of Arts Degree in Secretarial Studies. Karen worked as an executive secretary for Council of Governments in Trinidad until the birth of her first child. She then chose to be a stay-at-home mom and homemaker. Karen married Gary Neet on May 8, 1971, in a ceremony at the historic Zion's Lutheran Church in Trinidad. They were happily married for almost 48 years. Over the years, Karen and Gary resided in Trinidad, Greeley, Colorado Springs, Buena Vista, Canon City and Pueblo West, Colorado. Karen was a productive member of each of these communities, serving in civic clubs, providing child care, volunteering in school lunch programs and at school and community functions. For many years, she was an officer in the Buena Vista Booster Club and, in Canon City, volunteered for years with the Chamber of Commerce. She was always willing to donate her time, money and energy to worthy causes and to help someone in need. Karen enjoyed gardening, watching sports, reading and her

many outings with her girlfriends to Cripple Creek, concerts, plays and scenic areas of the state. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, especially her five grandsons. She also loved to travel and was privileged to visit countries and islands on almost every continent and in almost every ocean and sea. She felt blessed to have been able to see the world, to immerse herself into other cultures and to meet so many diverse and wonderful people. Karen is survived by her husband, Gary, of Pueblo West; her sister, Lennie (Raymond) Pfaffenhauser of Walsenburg, Colorado; her daughters, Kelli (Greg) Kennedy of Colorado Springs and Lisa (Richard) Persons of Pueblo West; her five grandchildren, Trevor, Ryan, Travis, Sean and Tristan; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and many wonderful and dedicated friends. Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Alice Hainlen, her brother Billy Hainlen, her first husband Pete Langoni and Pete's mother and father, Clara and Pete Langoni, who also served as grandparents to Kelli and Lisa. Karen did not want a traditional funeral service and chose to be cremated. With respect for her wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held on February 9, 2019, at 11:00 am, at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 2561 Vinewood Lane, Pueblo, Colorado. A catered reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, we will honor Karen's love for children and animals and request memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital; Shriners Hospital for Children; or Paws for Life animal shelter at 800 N. David James Shipman October 28, 1938 ~ January 28, 2019

David James Shipman was born to James Francis & Bessie Belle (Holcomb) Shipman in Ashtabula, OH on October 28, 1938. He served his country a combined total of 16 years in the Army and National Guard. In 1958 David married Doreen Marie Rightnour and had two children, Pamela Sue and Thomas David while working for CEI in Ashtabula. The family relocated to Colorado and he worked for 28 years as Trouble Lineman for Colorado Springs Utilities, retiring in 2001. In 2000 he married Clarice (Abrams) Roney and acquired two more sons, Scott James & Glenn Leroy Roney. In 2001 they moved to Penrose where he enjoyed meeting people, especially while working as a Park Ranger at the Royal Gorge until after "the fire". David was a Member of IBEW #113, Colorado & Fremont Cattlemen's Associations, Fellowship of Christian Cowboys, VFW,

American Legion, NRA, and AA as well as Deacon at 1st Southern Baptist Church in Penrose. At the time of unexpected passing on January 28, 2019, he was proud of almost 33 years of sobriety! He is survived by his wife, Clarice; children, Pamela Sue (Joe) Cevera of Ashtabula, Tom, of Penrose, as well as Scott (Jo) and Glenn (Terri) Roney of Colorado Springs; sisters-in-law, Dorothee Shipman and Ellie Rightnour, brother-in-law Bill Rightnour; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Alta and husband Will Greatwood of CA; and brother, Louis E. (Dorothee) Shipman of Fountain, CO. Senior Mini College registration begins March 4 Registration will begin March 4 for the 34th Annual Pueblo Community College - Fremont Campus Senior Mini College. Senior Mini College will be March 18-22 at the Fremont Campus of Pueblo Community College. Mini College is a non-credit learning experience geared toward senior citizens, with classes presented by local experts, artists and other accomplished individuals. Topics are varied and are designed for personal growth and life-long learning. Classes will include arts and crafts, local history, cooking, health and wellness, ﬁnancial planning, writing and many others. There are no tests, grades or credits. Mark John Mourne, Jr. January 16, 1946 - January 26, 2019

Mark John Mourne, Jr., 73, passed away peacefully at home on January 26, 2019, with his wife, LaDonna, by his side. Mark was born to Mark J. Mourne and Jean Bodkins Mourne (both deceased), January 16, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Oakland High School, California, and later went to Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he graduated with a degree in Anthropology. Instead of following a career in anthropology, Mark opened Ye Olde Coin Shop in Colorado Springs. After selling his coin shop in the early 1980's, Mark and his past wife, Alene Gayler, moved to Canon City and formed the Flying A Training Center located on Fourmile Lane where they raised and trained barrel horses until her death in approximately 1993. Mark continued with the horse business while doing his oil and gas business, marrying LaDonna in 1996, who helped him with his Paw Prints Subdivision located in north Canon overlooking the horse ranch on Fourmile Creek. Due to his health problems with chronic COPD, congestive heart disease, and diabetes, Mark and LaDonna made Buckeye, Arizona, their fulltime home in late 2016 after being "snowbirds" for the previous 6 years. Mark always had a

great passion for golf. He would do whatever he could to travel to different golf tournaments from Pebble Beach, California, to Maui, Hawaii. The competition kept him smiling whether it was at Shadows Hills in Canon City or Sumo Golf Course in Florence. He had a total of 6 hole in ones which were the highlights of his game. He truly loved living in Verrado in Buckeye because of the fantastic golf course that was only a block from his home. LaDonna and Mark played golf every chance they had up until the past 2 months, because of his shortness of breath, not knowing that he would be diagnosed with late stage pancreatic and liver cancer on January 16, 2019. Mark will be missed by all his family and friends, near and far. He is survived by his wife, LaDonna, step-son, Steve (Cari) Herbertson of Buckeye, AZ, step-daughter, Tami S. Herbertson of Florence, CO, step grandson, Bailey Herbertson of Buckeye, AZ, and dear loving friend Toni (Brian) Hardin of Wetmore. Mark had a brother, Jay Dean Mourne and a sister, Tina Jean Bodkins Mourne; both are deceased. At Mark's request there will be no services, just lots of memories for all of us to keep in our hearts. November 10, 1973 ~ January 30, 2019

Samuel Ethan Babcock, 45, a longtime resident of Canon City, died on January 30 after a hard fought battle with Huntington's Disease. He was born on November 10, 1973 in Denver CO, to Dennis and Sandra (Crowley) Babcock. Sam graduated from Canon City High School in 1993. He was employed locally, both at K-Bobs and City Market, and enlisted in the US Navy from 1994-1996. During a portion of his military service, he was stationed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. After returning home, he worked at City Market and then was employed at the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Florence, CO, until his medical retirement. Sam enjoyed hunting, fishing, and "mudding" in his truck. Being anywhere in the mountains was a favorite place to be. However, his deepest love was for his family and most of all, his children and grandson who were his greatest joy, with whom he loved to have fun and make memories. Sam always had a smile on his face, and those he met loved him. He is survived by his beloved children: Armand, Brittany, Kelsey, Isaiah and Aaron (children's mother Crystal); grandson Samuel Ivan (little Sam's mother

Jessie); father Dennis Babcock of Walsenburg; mother Barb (David) Creel of Colorado Springs; sister Ashae (Doug) Amerine of Parker CO; brothers Brian (Kelly) Everitt of Parker, CO; Ben (Olga Kobets) Creel of Fort Collins, CO; and Scott (Cera) Creel of Peyton, CO; and grandmother Nancy Skeff of Canon City. He was preceded in death by his birth mother, Sandra; and his brothers, Aaron and Tony. The family would especially like to acknowledge Skyline Ridge Nursing and Rehab staff for their extraordinary care of Sam; Jump Start Java, who graciously delivered caramel macchiatos to his room 3 times per week for nearly three years; and to Fremont Regional Hospice, who provided the utmost in care and compassion to Sam and to his family, especially during the last days of his journey. March 7, 1925 ~ January 20, 2019 Mary M. Kattnig was received by the hands of the Lord on January 20, 2019. She was born March 7, 1925 to George P. and Ada Mae (Holzfaster) Schneider in Canon City, Colorado. Mary's mother passed away shortly after Mary's birth and her aunt Ida (Schneider) Georges adopted and raised her. On July 5, 1945 Floyd A. Kattnig and Mary were wed in Westcliffe. They made their first home in a log cabin on their ranch in Junkins Park, raising their children, Bob and Kathy. In 1961 they moved their home to the Wet Mountain Valley where Mary continued to Ranch until 2010. Mary was Custer County Clerk and Recorder for twenty years and a lifetime member of Our Lady of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. She also held numerous offices in both state and local organizations. Mary is survived by her son, Bob (Peg) Kattnig of Westcliffe; grandson, Tom (Maria) Kattnig of Gunnison; great

grandson, John Kattnig, United States Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut; and greatgranddaughter, Aurora Kattnig, of Gunnison; Mary is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Wilma Kattnig of Canon City and Wanda Schneider of Montrose; along with numerous nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by the loves of her life, husband Floyd; and daughter, Kathy; brothers, George and Aloys (Moon) Schneider; sisters, Ada Mae Isabell, Ann Walker Callahan; half-brothers, Robert Schneider and William Schneider Walker; brothers-in-law, Len Kattnig, Earl Isabell, Elmore Walker; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Schneider.
