May 11, 1940 - April 22, 2018 Allen Leslie Barr, 77, of Penrose, CO, passed away April 22, 2018. He was born May 11, 1940 to Stephan and Edna (Allen) Barr in Pueblo, CO. After graduating with a degree in education, Allen taught at Florence High School and numerous schools throughout Colorado before changing careers and opening his own Greyhound Kennel and training service. When he wasn’t busy with his Greyhounds, Allen made regular visits the library to see friends and sit down with a good book. He leaves to cherish his memory, wife Charlotte “Ann” Barr; children, Denell Mares and Denine Perkins; sister Myra Degrado, 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren as well as numerous niece, nephews and greats. He was preceded by his daughters, Shirley and Deana Kae. He was also preceded by his grandson Leslie, niece Renee, and brother in law Carl DeGrado, and his parents. Funeral services will be held at 10:30AM, Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at Harwood Chapel, 516 N. 10th, Canon City, CO. A potluck will be served immediately following. June 21, 1973 - April 23, 2018 Dana Anthony Straley, 44, was born June 21st, 1973 in Pueblo Colorado. He passed away April 23rd, 2018 in Penrose, Colorado. Dana is survived by his daughter Brooke Straley, father, Dale Straley, mother, Cathy Straley, brother Dale Straley Jr. and sister, Demetria (Randy) Knipp, and their daughters. Dana was dedicated to Jesus Christ. He loved and was very faithful to family and friends. Dana was a very generous person. He loved camping, ﬁshing, hiking and working on cars. His greatest love, however, was for his daughter, Brooke, who he loved spending time with. Dana will sadly be missed by family and friends. God bless you Dana. Rest in peace. 08/25/1969 - 04/21/2018 Olin Ray Alford, 48 passed away on 04/21/2018 at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs Co. He was born 08/25/1969 in Ada, Oklahoma to Bill Alford and Dorothy (Embry) Pontius. Olin was the husband of Angela Leader Alford. They were together for twenty-three years, married for seven. He graduated Vanoss High School in 1987, and after went into the Navy. He served on USS John L Hall FFG-32 and was able to travel the world and saw many countries. He served in Desert Shield and was honorably discharged. Olin enjoyed collecting NASCAR memorabilia, loved the Colorado Avalanche, and wrestling. He will be remembered for being hard working, dependable, honest, and trustworthy. Olin was a good friend, father, brother, husband, and son. He loved his family more then anything and would do anything for them. He was a quiet man but could be goofy and knew how to make people laugh. He loved his rock music and always had it playing. He liked to play pool and darts with friends. Olin was involved in a car accident May 2011, and beat all odds to survive. He was left quadriplegic and Angie took care of him until recently, when an infection caused him to pass. Olin is survived by his wife Angie, son Cole Alford, daughters Skye Alford and Taylor (Luis Torres Jr) Newell. He’s also survived by his father Bill Alford and mother Dorothy Pontious, In-Laws Thomas and Loyeen Leader. As well as his sisters Shawna (Franklin) Pursiville, Billie Shannon(Brian) Howell and Cassandra Elms, step brother Larry (Christie) Rycroft, brother inlaws Thomas (Missy) Leader, Gary (Trudy) Leader, and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial service will be held Saturday, April 28th 2018, from 2:00-5:00 pm at Pathﬁnder Park in Florence CO, under the Pavilion. It will be a potluck so you can bring a dish if you’d like to come. February 16, 1954 - April 24, 2018 Deborah Macsalka, formerly of Penrose, passed away April 24, 2018 surrounded by family. She was 64. She was born Deborah Jeanine Howard to Raymond “Eddie” And Verna Howard in Dodge City, Kan. on Feb. 16, 1954. Her family moved to Colorado soon after her birth and settled in the Colorado Springs area in the latter part of the decade. Deborah married Richard Macsalka in 1976 and after having four children moved to Penrose in 1984. Her children are all graduates of Florence High School. She moved to Elizabeth, Colo. in 2011 to be closer to family. She is preceded in death by her husband Richard, her mother Verna, and her brother Raymond. She is survived by her four children: R.J., Natalie Macsalka-Rutledge (Aaron), Nikki Wheaton (Ryan) and Eddie (Yvette), her father, two brothers and one sister, as well as eight grandchildren.

Solvista offering eight-week course on stress reduction

Solvista Health is offing an eight-week course on Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, which is a kickoff to other health services that will be provided at its 701 S. Ninth St. location. The MBSR course is led by Suzan Steele, a licensed clinical social worker, who has been through extensive training to become a qualified MBSR teacher through the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Steele said Solvista has been offering the MBSR class to its enrolled clients for a couple of years, and she thought it would be a good idea to open it up to the community. She said what people have found most healing through classes and therapy is meditation. “The class in meditation is really a practice of sitting with ourselves and really learning to accept what this moment brings us, no matter what it is,” Steele said. “When we’re quiet, that’s when things come up, those things that we need to heal from. Learning to accept those things is the way through them.” The program was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founder of MBSR and author of “Full Catastrophe Living.” MBSR is used to help people with anxiety, depression, chronic pain, stress, high blood pressure, ADHD and more. The class is two and a half to three hours long and includes homework. The fee for the eight-week class is free for Medicaid members and $150 for everyone else. Two separate courses will overlap. The first series runs from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, beginning May 22, the second course runs from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning June 20. This class will be at Solvista’s 701 S. Ninth St. location, where they plan to continue to offer more wellness services to clients and the community. “As we’ve been offering primary care services, we certainly have seen a lot of folks that come to us with chronic pain, so we are really looking for non-medical ways to help them with that pain,” said Amie Adams, the chief officer of integration at Solvista. In light of today’s opioid epidemic, and because Solvista doesn’t prescribe a lot of benzodiazepines for anxiety, Adams said they want to be able to offer other things to help. “Just because we aren’t prescribing those things, it doesn’t mean the pain or the anxiety aren’t real,” she said. “We want to be able to say ‘yes’ to some other things, and we’ve had some requests from the community to make some of these things open.” For more information or to register for the MBSR class, call 719-275-2351 and ask for Dee. Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience to unveil new exhibit, replace T-Rex after ﬁre

The Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience is ready to roar this spring with a new event after rebounding from a fluke electrical fire in late March. The fire, with its 30-foot wall of flames destroyed the animatronic T-Rex. Video footage and photos taken of the fire by director Zach Reynolds was viewed by tens of millions of people across the world on television news programs, newspapers and other media websites. In a press release on Wednesday, the museum said the fire incident wasn’t the type of national attention it was seeking when it opened its doors in July 2016, but it is back after a two-month hiatus with upgrades and improvements to its 10-acre grounds and 16,500 squarefoot museum. The museum will host a Stego Mania event from 1 to 3 p.m. May 19 to welcome the newest and most high-tech member of the museum’s cast skeleton collection. In the press release, the museum states the event is in line with its official mission statement of providing affordable, dynamic and high-value educational opportunities for children of all ages. The Stego Mania will celebrate the arrival of the brand-new Stegosaurus display, which was custom-built by Mike Triebold of Triebold Paleontology, Inc., a world leader in dinosaur casts and the builder of the RGDE’s entire cast-skeleton collection — this one using cuttingedge scanning and printing technologies. Triebold was granted permission from the federal government to create a three-dimensional digital scan of the physical bones of Denver Museum of Nature and Science’s Stegosaurus, which was discovered by famed paleontologist Fred Kessler in Colorado’s Garden Park Fossil Area in 1936, not far from the museum. “I believe that this is the first dinosaur skeleton in the world to have been completely made from 3-D scanning and printing,” said Triebold of the life-sized casting. The project took two years to complete. Once unveiled, the unique Stegosaurus casting will reside on its own custom-built permanent display on the southwestern corner of the Main Museum Exhibit Hall. Stego Mania festivities will kick-off at 1 p.m. May 19 with the official unveiling of the new Stegosaurus cast, followed by a presentation about the skeleton’s high-tech creation process from Triebold. Diana Biggs, one of the RGDE’s Adventure Guides and resident dinosaur experts, will present “Stego 101” for

Berry Glazed Donut Waffles

Ingredients: For the waffles (makes 4 large) 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup sugar

2 large eggs 1 cup whole milk 4 Tablespoons melted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract non-stick cooking spray sprinkles to decorate

Instructions: 1. Put the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a bowl and mix together using a balloon whisk. 2. Put the eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract in a separate small bowl and whisk together. 3. Pour the liquid into the dry ingredients and whisk until just combined. 4. Preheat your waffle maker and spray with non-stick cooking spray. 5. Add a ladleful of batter in the center of the waffle maker and cook 2-3 minutes or until crisp and golden. 6. Repeat until you have used all the batter.

There are more and more crimes committed to support drug habits. Specifically in Cañon City (2014 – 2017), burglaries went from 74 to 119 and theft’s rose from 522 to 546. We have experienced an increase in the number of transients moving into the state, as well as our community. They are contributing to a surge in burglaries, theft’s and invasion of private property.
