‘That hometown feeling’
Treasured event Broomfield Days expects big turnout By Brooklyn Dance Staff Writer
After the COVID-19 pandemic forced last year’s Broomfield Days to shift to a virtual event, city and county officials are gearing up for the event’s in-person return. This year’s Broomfield Days will feature two new events and, fittingly, a mobile vaccine clinic. The festival starts Friday and runs through Sunday, with the bulk of activities taking place on Saturday. Community Events Coordinator Kay Gazaway said it’s evident community members are eager to get together. “We have hosted two fairly major festivals this year: Brew Ha Ha and the Great American Picnic. Both of those festivals saw a very strong turnout for attendance, much larger than we’d seen in years past,” Gazaway said. “Which gave us the indication that Broomfield is ready to get out and enjoy events together once again, and come together as a community with our friends and our neighbors and our families.” In years past, it’s estimated about 20,000 people filter in and out of the festival. This year’s attendance predictions are no different, Gazaway said. In honor of Broomfield’s two anniversaries this year — the 20th anniversary of becoming a county and 60th of becoming a city — Broomfield Days is debuting a special event Friday titled “Friday Night Lights” from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. It will include a free concert featuring 80’s dance band “6 Million Dollar Band” and a laser light show at the Midway Park main stage. Guests are invited to bring a blanket and a picnic for the evening. The second newly-created even, titled “Field of Brooms,” is a twist on Broomfield’s name and an homage

Pete said. Pete said his mother, who died in 2013, and his father Peter “are two people who molded our family to have a passion to serve.” For that reason, Pete is hopeful he can ride in the Broomfield Days Community Parade alongside his 89-year-old father. “The structural things that my
mom and dad worked on for our town, their long-term vision is so, so important,” Pete said. “My dad is so excited and so proud that I’m the grand marshal.” There were six Broomfield residents nominated for this year’s grand marshal, and community members then voted for that list. See CROUSE on 17

Up for a round of golf? How does $10,000 sound? That’s the prize for a hole-in-one. The 2021 version of Broomfield Days weekend tees off with the SRB Broomfield Days golf tournament at Eagle Trace Golf Club, 1200 Clubhouse Drive, Broomfield with a shotgun modified scramble start at 8 a.m. The 6,529-yard golf course opened in 1963 and was designed by Dick Phelps. The tournament in sponsored by nonprofit Senior Resources of Broomfield, a 501c (3) organization that seeks to improve the quality of life for area adults. Registration fees are $125 for individuals and $500 for a foursome. Fees include green fees, cart fees and tees. Rip-a-card packages --- five for $25 or 10 for $50 --- are also available. With rip-a-cards, each card gains entry into a basket giveaway drawing, which will be held at lunchtime the day of the tournament. Registration closes on Thursday. All proceeds go to Meals on Wheels. Who doesn’t like clowns? Well, maybe with the exception of Pennywise. But these clowns are anything but that. No, instead, they’re lovable and cute. They’re the best ones to be around. They’re also kids, which makes them even better. The annual Broomfield Days Kids Clown Contest is Saturday, starting at 8 a.m. on the main stage. Come dressed up with a big colorful wig, your face painted and a costume full of personality, including oversized shoes --- if you have them. Can your dog fly? Like really fly? If so, Broomfield Days is the perfect way for it to make a splash. The 11th annual BowWow Broomfield is back, including the popular national DockDogs event. With DockDogs, furry four-legged canines jump from a 40-foot dock in three disciplines: Big Air, Extreme Vertical and Speed Retrieve. In Big Air, dogs are judged on the distance that they jump, whereas in Extreme Vertical its how high they can get. Speed Retrieve is a drag race across the pool. It’s two days of scintillating splish-splashing fun. Rocky Mountain DockDogs is all about the dogs … and you. The 18th annual SRB Broomfield Days Car Show is Saturday from 6:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. All years, makes and models are welcomed. Pre-registration ended on Friday, but vehicles may be registered for $40 the day of the show. Vehicles must be parked by 9 a.m. the day of the show on the grass at South Midway Park. A large vaccination bus will also be parked at the festival for a majority of the day, offering free COVID-19 vaccines to anyone 12 or older eligible to receive the vaccine. Gazaway said individuals don’t have to be Broomfield residents or present an ID or insurance. Gazaway said she’s working closely with Broomfield Public Health and has followed the health department’s guidance on all of the event’s planning. She and her team are prepared to make any changes if public health orders change, she said. In a normal year, Gazaway said planning would begin in January for the September event. But because of the pandemic and changing public health orders, she didn’t get the goahead that the event could actually be held until late April. “The timeline was definitely accelerated this year,” she said. It’s estimated about 165 employees from Broomfield’s Parks, Recreation and Senior Services and Street Services departments will be working throughout the weekend, Gazaway said, along with 30 Broomfield

The staff will spend the week setting up for the festival to ensure it runs smoothly, ranging from tasks such as ensuring the sprinklers will not go off to setting up the multiple zero waste stations. Park Operations Manager Kevin Ewerks said staff will make sure trees are pruned, shrub beds are tidy and electrical outlets are working, clean out the ditch for the duck race, haul in signage, bleachers and fencing, lay out placements for the vendor booths and bring in all of the staging equipment. “Pretty much all of us are involved in some way or another,” Ewerks said, later adding it takes close to 1,300 parks staff hours to prepare for and put on Broomfield Days. The hours of planning and preparation are all worth it to continue one of Broomfield’s most-loved traditions.

We’ve all been so separate the last year and a half, it gives us a chance to come back together and celebrate what’s so special about Broomfield. ADA accessible parking will be reserved in the eastern portion of the Garden Center parking lot, and two ADA golf carts will be available to give individuals rides up and down Midway Boulevard, Gazaway noted. When Michael Rigirozzi moved to his Broomfield home almost five years ago, a sunflower unexpectedly bloomed in his yard. Rigirozzi guessed the flower was planted by the previous owner. With its vibrant orange petals that each faded into yellow, he said he couldn’t resist taking a photo of it.
He entered that photo into this year’s Broomfield Days poster contest — the first year photos were accepted in the contest — and learned at the Broomfield Council of Arts and Humanities final Summer Sundays event on Aug. 15 that his photo would be the official poster of this year’s festival. “I was quite pleased because there were several good other partici-

pants,” Rigirozzi, a photography hobbyist, said of winning. “I was pleased to have mine considered and honored.” Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities Executive Director Keri Dillingham said just 50 limitededition posters are printed each year. The posters are numbered and signed by the winning artist, and one poster each year is archived as part
of Broomfield’s history. Rigirozzi said that he’s always been drawn to photographing things that people sometimes miss or overlook. He likes the details found in the closeups. And to him, the sunflower photograph comes with a message. “I just think it’s the happiness that flowers can give folks,” he said. “It’s See POSTER on 19

(We) take time and enjoy what’s around us.” Rigirozzi has taken full advantage of Broomfield’s open space, he said, and he’s walked on Broomfield’s trail systems everyday since March 2020. It’s an honor to have his photo represent this year’s festival and go down in history, he said. “Looking back at the other entries of the past year the artists that have submitted their work, it’s just an honor to be included with all of them,” he said. “(Broomfield Council of Arts and Humanities) does a good job of fostering that, getting more arts into the community and this year allowing photographs. It’s just an honor to be considered.” Mary Juszynski’s mixed media entry titled “Celebrating Together,”
created to honor the marching bands of Legacy and Broomfield high schools, took second place. The poster contest is a yearly tradition held by the Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities, judged by members of the artistic community and community leaders. This year’s judges were local photographer and artist Gerry Case, 2019 poster contest winner Kim Touysinhthiphonexay, and Emily CrouseJoo, community leader and community engagement specialist at Broomfield FISH. The 16-inch by 20-inch posters will sell for $25, which helps cover the cost of printing. To reserve one in advance, email BCAH@ArtsinBroomfield.org and request a poster number. Posters will also be for sale at the Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities booth at Broomfield Days, located near the performance stage.
