I
t’s time to party in Midway Park. Broomfield Days is back. The annual three-day celebration gets rolling with Friday events — the annual golf tournament in memory of Walt Spader, and of course, bingo at the Girl Scout Shel-
Everyone comes together for annual festival ter, before things kick into full gear on Saturday. Midway Park is the place to be for Broomfield’s annual “Day of Play,” a designation given to Broomfield Days that is tied to Playful City status. Broomfield for five years
has been named a Playful City by KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit “dedicated to saving play for America’s children ...” The designation recognizes cities that make it easy for kids to play and be active. Broomfield was rec-
ognized for its numerous parks with play structures, play areas that are near neighborhoods and open spaces with sidewalks and trails. There will be fun and games for kids and adults
— and dogs — alike. The parade is not to be missed, with hosts of kids and floats and bands and cars making the procession down Midway Boulevard. It also features Paul Derda, a.k.a., “Mr. Broomfield” and the rec center name sake, as the master of ceremonies. See FESTIVAL on 4 BROOMFIELD DAYS 2017 • 3

FROM PAGE 3 Derda has held the parade gig for close to four decades. He said he’ll keep on doing it until they ask him not to, or until he can’t remember the names to go with the hundreds of faces he sees in the crowd. And don’t forget the food. You can get your first plateful at the Lions Club pancake breakfast and eat your way through the day by munching on tasty treats served up by scads of restaurants and nonprofits. And all sorts of vendors will be on hand to sell Broomfield-centric, and beyond, merchandise. Additionally, beer will be available in the food vending area. There will be stages full of entertainment for kids and families, all sorts of demonstrations, those best-dressed dogs and music to get you moving. There will be the Mayor’s Cup 5K and 1 Mile Road Race. And this year, Iluminar Aerial will be showcased on the performance stage — formerly the children’s stage — at 11 a.m. Saturday. If you’re bringing your canine friends to the park, make sure to visit Bow Wow Broomfield in South Midway Park. There will be dog-centric vendors, lure chasing presented by the Rotary Club of Broomfield Crossing and DockDogs leaping and jumping (which is open to novices). There’s a petting zoo and pony rides and music by Chris Daniels and the Kings. And don’t miss the classic car show Saturday. Poster contest winner has heart-felt ties to the city By Graham Griffin For the Enterprise

According to Jan Gibson, named winner of this year’s Broomfield Days poster contest, her piece captures the “feel of Broomfield.” Out of the 17 submissions to enter the contest Gibson’s “Bird and Blooms” took home the top prize of $100 and will have her work printed as the official Broomfield Days poster. This year, Broomfield Days is Sept. 15-16. “I wanted people to get a feel for Broomfield from my piece,” Gibson said. “I included the mountains and the pretty flowers and then the bird just kind of flew through the art.” Even though she lives outside of Broomfield in an unincorporated area, Gibson has a stronger connection to Broomfield than most. About 10 years ago, Gibson was at the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Librar y presenting at small art gallery when she was suddenly struck by a heart attack. “It was what is called a widow maker,” Gibson said. She continued to describe how the North Metro Fire Rescue District came to her rescue and transported her to the Good Samaritan Medical Center within the “golden hour.” “They saved my life that day,” Gibson said. “Ever since, I have had this really good connection to Broomfield and the people in it.” Unlike previous years — which have seen relatively few submissions to the conCity and County of Broomfield / Courtesy Photo test — this year’s 17 entries Jan Gibson stands beneath her winning entry for the 2017 Broomfield Days poster contest. provided Gibson with a 6 • BROOMFIELD DAYS 2017
good challenge. Although she entered the contest for fun, her background in art gave her a competitive edge. “I used to be the president of the Broomfield Art Guild before the heart attack, and I am also still a member of the Arvada art guild,” Gibson said. “Art has always been a big part of my life.” Since her heart attack, Gibson has stepped down as president of the Broomfield Art Auild but has remained actively involved in multiple art guilds throughout the area. “My family has always been a big support for my art,” Gibson said, which equates to a great deal of support. Gibson and her husband have seven children, 23 grandchildren, and an additional 10 great grandchildren, all of whom have expressed their excitement at Gibson’s achievement. Since the announcement in July that she won the contest, Gibson has been invited to attend Broomfield Days and help showcase her art. Second place in the poster contest went to Shirlee Akemi Miyake for “Celebrate Nature.” She took home a $50 prize. All 17 submissions to the poster contest will be hung in the Broomfield Community Center for the month of September so that they can be viewed by the entire community. “Ever since being in hospitals and so forth, I have always wanted to make a poster,” Gibson said. “This really is a dream come true.”

Whether they go for the marching bands, dancers, horses, school groups, floats or free candy, crowds of kids and kids at heart are known to fill the sidewalks of Midway Boulevard long before the annual Broomfield Days Parade begins its procession. The parade always draws a large contingent of floats, bands and more. Entries will be judged in six categories: Decorated floats, car and cycles clubs, school spirit, multicultural, marching groups and marching bands. Also featured in the parade will be Joe Marr, this year’s Parade Grand Marshall. Marr received a Heart of Broomfield award earlier this year for his contributions to the Broomfield community. He has spent an extensive amount of time working with the University of Colorado School of Medicine as well as serving as a consultant to the World Health Organization in the field of tropical medicine. The parade gets rolling at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Main and Midway, and will arrive at Midway Park at 10 a.m.

Awards are scheduled to be given at noon at the reviewing stand. First place trophies will be awarded for each eligible entry in its classification and category, as well as a sweepstakes award for the overall best entry in the float and marching band categories. No trophies will be awarded in the commercial vehicles, political, equestrian or individual categories. The parade always draws a large contingent of floats, bands and more.

Clown contest a favorite of kids and adults alike

Broomfield kids pull out all the stops to create their costumes for the annual Optimist Club Clown Contest. And with good reason — the stakes are high. The prize in each age group is a new bike. No small trophy for the 12-and-younger set. The contest starts at 8 a.m. on the main stage in Midway Park (east of North Metro Fire Rescue District Station 61). Kids bedecked in fluffy wigs, floppy shoes and colorful noses need to arrive no later that 7:45 a.m. — registration begins at 7:15 a.m. After the judging, all of the contestants can pile on the Optimist Club’s parade float, so the whole town can see their clown costume creativity. There is something for every taste at Broomfield Days, but one event has left the town celebration howling in recent years. The DockDogs extreme jumping competition, which kicks off at 9 a.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. Sunday in Midway Park, has had the town’s canines and their owners wagging their tails in anticipation at seeing which of man’s best friends can go the distance. Dogs have their own events at Broomfield Days By Enterprise Staff
Dogs of all sorts can party in the park this weekend, too. BowWow Broomfield is back for another round of canine fun and celebration. The pup-friendly area will be in south Midway Park near the detention pond. It will feature dogcentric vendors, pet adoption and the fabulous leaping dock as dogs show off in the giant pool. And, be on the lookout for super heroes, princesses and characters of the canine variety when dogs of all sorts vie for the Best-Dressed Dog Contest on the demonstration stage at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Be on the lookout for unusual outfits and tricks, too. At stake are prizes from dog-related businesses in Broomfield. The contest features large- and small-breed divisions. Expect about 50 dogs and hundreds of onlookers. The contest is judged by the audience, which votes for favorites via hoots, hollers and claps. A panel of official judges is charged with gaug-

Service clubs dish out food, sponsor bingo By Enterprise Staff
Do pancakes taste better when served better outdoors among hundreds of your closest friends? If turnout at the Lions Club’s annual pancake breakfast can serve as an unspoken answer, then yes, they do. Crowds are always in abundance for the flapjacks, eggs, sausage, juice and milk dished out by club members. Over the years, the number of hot cakes served by the Lions total up to thousands. And
they hope to add to that total this year. The Lions will be back at the griddles on Saturday at the Girl Scout Shelter at Midway Park. The feast runs from 7 to 11 a.m. The cost is $8 for ages 13 and up; and $5 for kids 6 to 12. Those age 5 and younger are free. Proceeds go to Lions’ programs that benefit the community. The Lions also sponsor Club Bingo at the Girl Scout Shelter at 7 p.m. Friday evening and again from 7 to 11 p.m. at the shelter on Saturday.

The Broomfield Lion’s primary mission is to help the vision impaired. We do this by collecting old glasses for re-distribution and helping to buy new glasses for those in need.
