Hold off on the sweaters: Summer has one more festival on the horizon in your backyard. It’s called Broomfield Days, an annual gathering the city calls its “biggest event of the year.” For decades, Broomfielders have come together in September to “have fun and spend a day enjoying a festival in their honor,” the city website says. The festival’s morning kicks off with breakfast at the Girl Scout Shelter, with runners lining up for the Mayor’s Cup 5K before the Broomfield Days parade comes down Midway Boulevard. You can check out arts and crafts, a “trade fair” and food booths, a car show featuring unique and classic rides, a children’s clown contest, a duck race, carnival games and live music on stage. Broomfield Days returns to Midway Park – off Midway Boulevard east of U.S. 287 – getting in full swing Saturday.

people who have experienced the foster system, he said. Beth Bosio served on the leadership of the Broomfield Community Foundation, and the family has a fund with the organization. Through the fund, the Bosios are able to continually dedicate money to specific organizations, and they focus on funding basic needs like housing and food for the community. The pair also received a 2002 Heart of Broomfield philanthropic award, according to the Broomfield Community Foundation. “We just try to help out — I think that’s what you’re supposed to do, share your talents with your community,” Beth Bosio said. At Broomfield Days, the couple will ride in one of the frontmost cars in the parade. “We’re just really excited to be there as a family and see all our friends and neighbors in town, because that’s what Broomfield Days is all about,” Beth Bosio said. The Broomfield Days parade is set to kick off 9:30 a.m. Sept. 19 at Main Street and Midway Boulevard, before heading toward Midway Park.

Broomfield Days main stage slated to welcome Front Range musician Wrenn Van CORBETT STEVENSON BROOMFIELD ENTERPRISE Front Range musician Wrenn Van is set to perform at Broomfield Days and show off her R&B-inspired pop tunes for the crowd at what the city calls its
biggest event of the year. Although the Broomfield Days crowd is sure to be large, Van said she’s no stranger to live performances, having gotten her start in the coffee shops and restaurants of the Lafayette area, playing for tips with her friend,
and now keyboardist, Ian Arras. Her roots in playing shows regularly got her comfortable with performing in front of a crowd, she said, and she still enjoys live performances. “I really love the improvisation aspect of (live shows), and sometimes
you just get a really special crowd and it gives me so much life and energy,” Van said, adding that seeing people dance and have fun means the joy is going both ways. “Sometimes people aren't actively listening, but they're with their family

BROOMFIELDENTERPRISE.COM or something, and they're dancing with their kid or there’s a couple dancing, and I think that's awesome,” she said. “They're dancing to music that I provide (and it makes) a special moment for them." “It’s a symbiotic relationship,” she added. Her Broomfield Days performance comes just a day after the planned release of her new single, “Curtains.” The song is about “this realization that I can't just sit by and expect things in my life to fall into my lap — I actually have to go out and get them,” Van said. “But when I am going out and getting (things I want) in my life, it can almost feel like whatever direction I choose is the wrong direction.” Van described feeling like stumbling through those moments can be like watching a bad play, and sometimes you just think it’s time to close the curtains. The single has “a little bit of adolescent or young adult angst, and just the uncertainty of it all, and feeling like sometimes every decision is the wrong decision,” she said. Van said the single will debut her first steps into a new sound, where she leans further into pop, while still maintaining R&B influences and her love for powerhouse vocalists like Pat Benatar.
“It’s so cheesy to say, but I think maturing is realizing that pop music is actually cool,” Van said. At Broomfield Days, Van’s performance is slated to begin 3:30 p.m. Sept. 19 on the main stage in Midway Park, off Midway Boulevard and east of the fire station.

The car show at Broomfield Days promises another day of classic rides, all shown off for a good cause. Put on by Senior Resources of

Retro logo for Broomfield Days harkens back to city’s early years
CORBETT STEVENSON BROOMFIELD ENTERPRISE This year’s retro Broomfield Days festival logo harkens back to a style from an era when Broomfield, as a city, was young. Broomfield was incorporated — or officially became a city — in 1961 when it only had a population of about 6,000, according to the city’s website. Though much has changed about the area since then, the winner of the annual Broomfield Days logo design contest nods to the past with her winning piece. “I was having a hard time for a while coming up with (a design) — it’s one of those things where’s there’s so many ideas and so many possibilities that it can be really hard to narrow it down,” said Liz Carney, adding that just days before the contest deadline, she tried returning to her roots to find the winning idea. “I’m always drawn towards landscape stuff, so I started messing around with flowers and then it kind
of just occurred to me,” she said. “What better vibe is there than flowers and retro?” The logo’s yellow and brown flower made of curved lines with a wavy, retro font are reminiscent of design trends in the ’60s, and the “Growing together since 1961” slogan nods to the feel-good vibe many associate with the era. “I love Broomfield, and I’ve been a part of it for so long, and the public aspect of (the competition) and being able to share that design as part of such a fun, community-wide event was really cool for me,” Carney said. Carney said she works at the Broomfield library as a circulation clerk, and visitors to the library may have greeted her at one of the first floor desks. Outside of work, creating art has always been a passion of hers, she said. “Art has been a part of my life for as long as I remember,” Carney said. “All through elementary and middle school and high school I was just constantly doing art classes, and

BROOMFIELDENTERPRISE.COM majored in fine arts at Iowa State University.” In addition to participation in the logo contest, Carney’s contributions to public art in the area include graphic design work for the Crestone Bakery in Westminster, a decorated traffic
box and storm drain in the Thornton area, and regularly contributing to the Broomfield library’s public displays. Carney’s winning logo can be seen in the city’s promotional material and at the event itself, which takes place Sept. 19 and 20 at Midway Park.
