She was one of the members who hired former executive director Karen Smith and can remember when board members agonized on how to distribute the $2,500 they had to grant. The couple, who raised two children in Broomfield, also worked on the initiative to make Broomfield a city and county and on both pushes to pass the open space tax amendment. They have enjoyed being a part of Broomfield Days for 37 years — eating at the pancake breakfast, working booths, riding floats in the parade and taking their children to the carnival. “It was a chance to get together and catch up with people you haven’t seen in a while,” Davis said. “We used to know everybody.” Recreation Supervisor Kim Evelsizer, who has organized the parade the past three years, said the parade marshal is chosen internally with the help of the city manager’s office. In the future, they may look at another process, including nomina-

tions. “In the past, we’ve picked someone who is very involved in the community and has done a lot of volunteer work,” she said. She tells the marshal, who will ride behind the mayor’s car in the parade, to research different waves around the world since that will be their primary duty. “People we’ve chosen have been very delighted and they’ve really had a good time with it,” she said. Past marshals have included Dr. Joe Marr, Joe Butkovich, Jim Figg and Melissa Smart, Bob and Ilene Niehoff and Vance Rasmussen. The Optimist Club used to be in charge of the parade, but the Recreation Departmenttook over the duties three years ago. Every year the parade, which starts at 9:30 a.m. at Main Street and Midway Boulevard, attracts about 80 entries that aredivided into 10 categories. The deadline to enter the parade has passed, Evelsizer said, but “if someone truly forgot, I’ll make sure” they get included. Memories evoked in 2018 poster

Broomfield artist Joe Ziegler combined an old family snapshot with memories of Broomfield Days — the marching bands, children with balloons and scores of people milling about colorful tents. “It was of my memory of sitting on the south side of Midway underneath some trees overlooking the parade,” Ziegler said. “In the foreground is me sitting on the curb with my brother.” The image of the two boys, sitting at the edge of their driveway, was taken years ago by their mother Janice Ziegler. She recently accepted the poster award for Joe, who was recovering from surgery. “I have a feeling that Joe’s is going to be extraordinary popular because of the story behind it,” Keri Dillingham, Broomfield Council of Arts and Humanities executive director, said. “It speaks to people willing to celebrate the spirit of Broomfield Days.” It was the second time in the past three years that Ziegler has entered the poster contest, and it was his first color painting that he completed in a pointillist style. Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image. This year, he also entered an en plein air painting of cottonwood trees near 144th Avenue and Lowell Boulevard. En plein air is when an artist paints outdoors, as opposed to in a studio. He loved the carnival setting of Broomfield Days when he was child.

“We would get to go play little games we normally wouldn’t have played,” Ziegler said, “or eat a bunch of funnel cake and candy.” He loved visiting with a man who guessed his birth month, weight or favorite color and trying to stump him so he could earn a prize. His family has home videos of him playing with a foam toy ice cream cone, where he pulled a lever and launched the top, a week after the carnival.

In the mid 1990s, he remembers his family parked at his grandmother’s house on Hemlock Street and walking toward Midway Park when a hail storm hit, causing them to hide beneath a bouncy castle. The following edition of the Broomfield Enterprise showed a photo of that moment. “I remember it being a time when my entire family was hanging out in Broomfield building memories like that,” he said. Ziegler will be at Broomfield days at the BCAH booth, where prints of his poster will be sold. He will be doing a live painting and answering questions. “Parade Day” was one of eight sub-

missions this year, Dillingham said. The winner was announced July 26. Requiring a poster theme was discontinued last year based on feedback from local artists. Last year, organizers also opened up the contest to artists as young as 16. This year’s submissions will be on display through September in the lobby between the Broomfield Auditorium and the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library. BCAH prints 50 copies of the winning poster each year, which sell for $25. Each is numbered and signed by the artist. Proceeds from sales go toward printing costs.

Event gets underway at 9:30 a.m. Saturday Staff Report

Whether they go for the marching bands, dancers, horses, school groups, floats or free candy, crowds of kids and kids-at-heart are known to fill the sidewalks of Midway Boulevard long before the annual Broomfield Days Parade begins its procession. The Broomfield Community Parade begins at 9:30 a.m. at Main and Midway Boulevard, and will arrive at Midway Park at 10 a.m. The parade always draws a large contingent of floats, bands and more. Entries will be judged in six categories: Decorated floats, car and cycles clubs, school spirit, multicultural, marching groups and marching bands. Also featured in the parade will be Bob Davis, this year’s Parade Grand

Davis retired from the City and County of Denver as the personnel division director, has volunteered on the Land Use Review Commission (now called Planning & Zoning), the

There is something for every taste at Broomfield Days, but one event “goes to the dogs” in the best possible way. The DockDogs extreme jumping competition, which kicks off at 9 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday in Midway Park, has had the town’s canines and their owners wagging their tails in anticipation at seeing which of man’s best friends can go the distance. The event draws crowds of hundreds to South Midway Park to see the high-flying dogs in action. There are three types of competition at Broomfield Days. The most recognizable is the Big Air competition, in which owners coax the greatest horizontal distance out of their dogs. But the human-canine teams also are tested in the Extreme Vertical competition and the timed Speed Retrieve. There also will be a canine belly flop contest. The event is open to seasoned competitors and novices alike. On-

Best-dressed dogs get a chance to shine Staff Report

Dogs of all sorts can party in the park this weekend, too. BowWow Broomfield is back for another round of canine fun and celebration. The pup-friendly area will be in south Midway Park near the detention pond. It will feature dogcentric vendors, pet adoption and the fabulous leaping dock as dogs show off in the giant pool. And, be on the lookout for super heroes, princesses and characters of the canine variety when dogs of all sorts vie for the Best-Dressed Dog Contest on the demonstration stage at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Some do elaborate tricks, too. At stake are prizes from dog-related businesses in the area. The contest features large- and small-breed divisions. Expect about 50 dogs and hundreds of onlookers. The contest is judged by the audience, which votes for favorites via hoots, hollers and claps. A panel of official judges is charged with gauging which of the dogs has the most applause. Once a victor is chosen in each division , they square off in a best-of-show clap-off.

After the judging, all of the contestants can pile on the Optimist Club’s parade float, so the whole town can see their clown costume creativity. High-stakes prizes are awarded to the winners. Street dance returns this year

Senior Resources of Broomfield is trading in its formal gala fundraiser for a nostalgic celebration under the stars. For the first time in many years, a Broomfield Days Street Dance will return to Midway Park. “It was just a great connection to the community,” Councilwoman Kimberly Groom said. “Pretty much everybody in Broomfield came to the street dance and we had a lot of fun.” At a recent council meeting Groom, a Ward 4 councilwoman, challenged everybody who went to Broomfield High School in the 1980s to come out to the dance. She also has served on the Senior Resource Board for years. “We used to have amazing attendance,” she said. For the last few years of the dance, which Groom said ranged from the 1980s to 1990s, it was held at the Broomfield High School stadium to control entrances and corral the crowd. “I believe it became just too much logistically to handle, and we did away with it,” she said. There has been talk for years of bringing it back, she said, and when Senior Resources decided last year to discontinue its annual gala, she jumped on the opportunity to host the dance. When she was out campaigning for council, Groom said a number of people suggested bringing it back. Through talks with the senior board and with city officials, it came together in a matter of months.

Kicking off the night will be Phil Long & Friends, whose lead singer is a graduate of Broomfield High School and who now performs in the Vail and Aspen areas. The Paul Glover Group also will perform. Tickets are available via eventbrite.com or with cash at the event. Food and drinks at the dance will be provided by food trucks and several local microbreweries — and a booth where people can buy Coors and Budlight. “We’re bringing it back even with the classic beer,” Groom said. All ages are welcome, but organizers ask that pets are left at home. Buying a ticket online ahead of time comes with a free drink ticket. No coolers or outside food and drink will be allowed at the dance, but

people are invited to bring blankets or chairs. There will be street parking and VIP parking at the Garden Center for $20 and at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, 900 W. Midway Blvd., for $10. Groom said the board hopes to earn $70,000 — a lofty, but muchneeded goal. Ben Vagher, president of the Senior Resources Board, said the organization was created in 1982 as a nonprofit. It actively supports programs such as Meals on Wheels, a medical equipment loan closet, the handyman/ chore program, a caregiver respite program and special medical and dental needs programs. field Days events within 24 hours starting with the Broomfield Days Open golf tournament Friday, Sept. 14 at Eagle Trace Golf Club. The tournament starts at 1 p.m. Registration gets underway at 10:30 a.m., and the event ends with a burger bar, raffle and prizes from 5 to 6 p.m. SRB took over the tournament from the city three or four years ago, Vagher said, and it now includes a chance to win a $20,000 hole-in-one and a $1 million hole-in-one. Board members still are looking for golfers or sponsors for the event, Vagher said. The dance will follow that evening, and the 16th Annual Rockin’ Cool Classic Car Show will take place Saturday, Sept. 15. The car show, which also benefits Broomfield Senior Resource programs and services, asks for a $25 donation to preregister a vehicle or a $30 donation the day of the show. Preregistered vehicles will get five additional raffle tickets for early registration. The deadline to preregister is Sept. 9. Each registration comes with a goodie bag, show T-shirt, dash plaque and one raffle ticket.
