Birch Elementary is a neighborhood school offering a wide scope of learning opportunities and a variety of instructional strategies to meet the learning styles of its individual students. Boulder Community School of Integrated Studies at Aurora 7 Boulder Community School of Integrated Studies is a focus school that opened in the fall of 1996. Creekside at Martin Park

Community Montessori is a focus school and the only public Montessori school in Boulder Valley School District. Community Montessori serves children from preschool through fifth grade. Classrooms are multi-age: Primary includes children ages 3 through kindergarten; lower elementary is first through third grades, and upper elementary is fourth and fifth grades. The Montessori method challenges each student through a childcentered, individualized approach. The classroom environment allows children to move freely and make challenging choices within safe limits and clear academic expectations. Transportation is offered for those who qualify.

Creekside Elementary School at Martin Park, located in south Boulder, is a dynamic neighborhood school hosting an international student population. Creekside is proud and grateful to be in a brand new school building designed to foster the 4Cs of 21st century learning: collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking. Gold Hill

Gold Hill is a historic mining town nestled in the mountains above Boulder. Founded in 1873, Gold Hill School is the oldest continuously run elementary school in Colorado. Because your child’s early years are crucial in his or her development, choosing the right child care facility is one of the most important decisions you can make to prepare him or her for both school and adult life. While most parents start the process by asking friends and family for recommendations, keep these tips from the child care experts at KinderCare in mind when searching for a child care center: Find locations along your existing commute The rhythm of drop-off and pick-up will soon become a reality of your days, so take into account how a new routine will impact traffic and drive times during your commute. Do your research Child care has come a long way in the past couple decades, and nationally accredited centers can provide everything your child needs to reach his or her potential. Awarded by an independent organization, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, accredited centers meet rigorous standards in everything from teacher qualifications to curriculum to safety. A simple search online can provide a list of accredited centers near your location of choice. Make a list of requirements. Before you tour a facility, it can help to find your focus. Make a list about what you need from a program, what you want for your child and any concerns you may have, no matter how large or small. For example, consider potential concerns like kindergarten preparation, teachers’ management of conflict between children and more. Take tours Once you’ve narrowed down your list to a few preferred facilities or programs, schedule tours to check out the spaces, meet the directors and watch how the teachers interact with the children. If you’re still on the fence or need more information about one or more centers, don’t be afraid to go back for a second visit and ask more questions to ensure you’re picking the right place for your family. Trust your instincts. After taking tours, you may have a lot of information to process. Narrowing down what’s right for your family can seem overwhelming at first, but asking yourself questions such as these can help you in the long run: Did you feel listened to, heard and understood? nspiring kids’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) now could help prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that occupations related to STEM are projected to grow 13 percent by 2022 – faster than projections for all other occupations over the same time. Although the need for professionals with STEM experience is growing, a recent survey of U.S. high school students shows that only 24 percent of boys and 11 percent of girls are interested in STEM careers. Research also shows that youth who have extracurricular STEM experiences before graduating from high school are more likely to explore higher education and career opportunities in STEM. To help meet the future demand for tech leaders, private companies are stepping up to help inspire kids’ passion for STEM and develop the next generation of skilled professionals. And to keep kids immersed and excited, new projects are added regularly for continual enrichment. “[We want} to ensure that all children, no matter where they live, have access to hands-on, experiential STEM learning,” said Peter Gulla, senior vice president of marketing at Hughes. “It is a part of our company’s larger commitment to bridging the technology divide. A bold beginning – “Oh Yes You Can!” BY SARAH KUTA

Steve Bosley was fed up with the way parents and coaches screamed at other children at his kids’ track meets, often berating them for not running fast enough. The year was 1979, and Bosley was president and CEO of the Bank of Boulder. One day he expressed his frustration to Olympian Frank Shorter, who ran every day from his retail store on the Pearl Street Mall to the bank to make the day’s deposit. “They were driving kids out of the sport, not into it,” Bosley said. After listening to Bosley’s observations, Shorter suggested Bosley organize his own race. But instead of hosting a track and field event, Shorter advocated for a road race. Bosley, then 37, was a runner himself, having taken up the sport after his father died of heart disease in 1969. His five children were athletic, too, especially his youngest son, Ted, who was 6 years old when he started competing in track and field events.

“We entered them in lots of activities,” Bosley said. “Soccer and swimming and track. Fitness and a healthy lifestyle were sort of natural for us.” By the late 1970s, the running boom was in full swing. Road races like the New York City Marathon, the Peachtree Road Race and the Falmouth Road Race were several years old — and growing in popularity. Shorter, who is widely credited with bringing distance running to the masses, moved to Boulder several years earlier to train at altitude for the 1972 Olympics, where he won gold in the marathon. He also won silver in the 1976 Olympic marathon. “At the time, there was no real formula for how to put on a road race because there just weren’t that many, and they were all locally homegrown,” Shorter said. “But Steve was not only a really very good banker, he was also a checklist personality — some people just love having a checklist. What we found out is that putting on a road race is the world’s longest checklist. It wouldn’t have gone anywhere without Steve’s mentality of, ‘OK, let’s

find out how to do it.’ ” Without knowing much about road racing, Bosley spent the next few weekends traveling around to observe races. All told, he spent just seven weeks organizing the first Bolder Boulder, a 10-kilometer running race through the streets of Boulder that finished at North Boulder Park. Bosley hired a running group to organize and plan the first Bolder Boulder, which was designed to be a marketing effort for the Bank of Boulder. Five days before the first Bolder Boulder, the race director called Bosley and explained that he hadn’t secured a parade permit from the city of Boulder. “Well, without a parade permit, there would be no race,” Bosley said. “He didn’t know what to do.” Bosley took matters into his own hands and headed down to plead with the city for a parade permit. After talking to several city staffers, who all told him they couldn’t approve a permit on such short notice, Bosley happened to meet

Boulder Valley Waldorf School Boulder Valley Waldorf School will celebrate its 25th year with a big Silver Harvest Celebration in autumn. Formerly Shepherd Valley Waldorf, the school has opened an additional kindergarten school on its 38 acres in Niwot and gone to a sensible tuition model, according to Ruth Godberfforde, outreach and admissions director.
