DOWNSIZING AS YOU AGE: 8 organization tips and tricks
(BPT) - It’s easy to accumulate a lot of things throughout your life. From clothes and household goods to antiques and treasured keepsakes, decades of living often means decades of stuff. When you get to a certain age, it can be smart to start downsizing your belongings. Sometimes downsizing is inspired by a move and other times it’s simply a proactive effort to keep a home clutter-free and make things easier for the next chapter of life. Although it can feel overwhelming, with a few smart steps, the process can be easy and even enjoyable. Use these eight tips to get started:

Sort it out

Enlist some help

Think about safety
Whether you’re moving into a new home or preparing to age in place, it’s important to consider safety factors as you age. Clutter is a trip hazard for seniors, so keep this in mind as you go through items. It might be time to get rid of throw rugs, exposed cords and cut down on end table clutter to make room for a lamp that provides extra light.
Consider your new space
If you’re moving, evaluate how much space you will have in your new home to help decide what to keep. That massive claw-foot
couch might not be suitable for a modest living room. Smaller storage space might mean getting rid of clothing you haven’t worn for over a year or consolidating printed photographs by transferring them into digital files and storing online for easy access by family.
Memory care concerns

Some of the most exciting changes are happening for active seniors. Construction starts this summer on the Village Cooperative in Loveland, and sales have already begun. Steve Von Schmidt, Marketing and Creative Director, explained the concept: “A ‘co-op’ is a senior cooperative that is agerestricted housing community for active adults that

provides all the financial and tax benefits of home ownership with the convenience of community living. While Village Cooperative member-owners typically buy-in so they don’t have to worry about maintenance, repairs or even repair bills, they stay for the camaraderie and sense of belonging they feel in their community. Each member owns a share in the entire community, which is managed by a board consisting of elected member-owners.” Von Schmidt said this housing option for active seniors is very different from a single-family home, condo or assisted living community. He explained, “When people decide to live here, they’re not only wanting to get rid of the oversized house that doesn’t live comfortably any longer, but also to live better, to have closer ties to their June 16, 2019
neighbors and families, and to have the little luxuries they deserve. The Village Cooperative of Loveland offers a unique building design, management style and ownership structure. Instead of purchasing a unit for $400,000 or more, Village Cooperative residents purchase an equity share, typically around $150,000 and then a monthly share of the operating expenses of about $1,500 (based on the size and location of the home) that covers maintenance outside and inside the homes. Resident-owners own their own building in common through a notfor-profit corporation and share an ownership that appreciates at a fixed 3 percent per year until they leave. Re-selling is facilitat-
ed by the Cooperative and eliminates traditional real estate transactions.” The new Loveland co-op will include 52 homes in one bedroom, two bedroom and two bedroom with den designs. Members choose from 20 unique styles based on a priority number given at reservation. The homes range in size from approximately 900 sq. ft. to over 1,500 sq. ft. on one-level within in a secure three-story building. Features of this living community include a club room, reading areas, community area with kitchen, woodworking shop, guest suite, fitness room, garden plots, while-you’reaway services and underground heated parking with a car wash bay. The homes are equipped with all ap-
pliances including washer and dryer, in-home storage, walk-in closets and individual HVAC systems. Holly Smith, Community Director of Affinity at Loveland, said that people 55 and older might not even be retired when they consider moving to an active adult apartment community. She said, “I have been involved with different kinds of senior living for awhile now and I find this a really cool concept. People might not want to continue to have upkeep on a home and landscaping, or they might want to be surrounded by people their own age. At Affinity they have enough things to be involved in to be social, and they can participate in as much or as little as they
want. So they’re not stuck at home.” Affinity offers 30,000 square feet amenity spaces for active adults. The common areas include an indoor heated salt water pool, spa, theater, pub, internet café, craft room, library, fitness center, billiards room, workshop, outdoor fire pit, care and game rooms, community gardens with raised beds, and even a dog park for the pet-friendly community. Smith suggested thinking “one of a kind” different apartment options. There are studios, one and two bedrooms with garages, carports and open space parking. “When people are looking to downsize, what they get depends on what they’re looking for. They

can enjoy the active lifestyle as often as they can and find something new here. They can branch out and have a high quality of life.”
Bridging the Gap
For people who value independence but might transition to assisted options, there are several approaches. Holly Raymer, nursing home administrator, said the Hover Senior Living Community has been in Longmont 40 years. It offers independent apartments for people who are 62 and over. There’s a café open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Saturday, a store/pantry for kitchen staples, reasonable transportation around town for
groceries, bank and doctor appointments and a multitude of activities. Raymer said, “The vision of founder Beatrice Hover was to offer dignified affordable housing for seniors. This is the most reasonably priced senior
community in Longmont. We take Section 8 vouchers and work with the Longmont housing authority.” For people who need more assistance but not yet skilled living, there are assisted facilities. Caregivers
provide support to elders for things they can’t do anymore, such as manage incontinence, fix three meals a day, dress and bath and manage some medication. There’s also a full calendar of activities. Some people who live in the Hover independent apartments volunteer at the assisted facility. At the Good Samaritan Society Loveland Village, Holly Turner is Director of Senior Living/Marketing. She said the Good Samaritan Society is dedicated to sharing God’s love through health, healing and comfort. There are three apartment buildings as well as twin homes for people 55 and over who want independent living with some

services. There is housekeeping twice a month, scheduled transportation, maintenance and full use of all amenities including the fitness center, swimming pool and bistro. Since these units have full kitchens, residents pay separately for meals in the dining room. There are some garages, and pets allowed with a pet fee. Assisted living offers three meals a day, housekeeping on a weekly basis, medication prompting, bathing, routine wellness checks, social services and each floor has its own dining room as well as 24 hours a day snacks. Qualified medication administration personnel are on each floor.
Turner said all residents have priority access to other levels of care. A transition team meets biweekly to discuss residents’ needs. She said residents may be able to stay independent with just a little help from Good Samaritan Services at Home and Good Samaritan Colorado Home Care. The help might include bathing, meal preparation, running errands, prompting to take medications, watering plants, doing laundry or walking pets.
Assisted Living
The highest level of care is skilled care. Holly Raymer said the Katherine And Charles Hover Skilled Nursing Home is a radical change from traditional
nursing homes. “Loneliness, hopeless and boredom are the biggest plague in nursing homes,” she said. “We work to combat those plagues. We are making a different institutional model, based on homes not hospitals.” Under construction now, the Longmont homes are part of the Greenhouse Project. There will be four houses with 12 people in individual rooms with private bathrooms. There is a real home environment with an open kitchen, great room, and easy access to the outdoors. “It is a home, not just home-like,” Raymer said. “The routine of the house is geared to natural routines. Every decision and every
house is different according to the community of people who live there. The smaller setting allows everyone to be well-known to each other. The same people are taking care of the elders every day, consistent to that house. Nurses, RNs and LVNs provide treatments and assessments, working in partnership with the Shahbaz who knows these people best. Every staff member gets 160 hours of training and 40-60 hours of culinary training before working with elders. They’re also taught budgetary management, how to order supplies and food and how to set up their life skills, enhancing their work and personal life.”

Health Symptoms to Watch Out For AS YOU AGE

Healthcare changes as we get older. While certain symptoms might not mean much before the age of 55, those same symptoms could be cause for concern for a senior. Here are some tips for keeping your eyes,
Hearing
“Hearing loss has a huge impact on our overall health,” says Dr. Kimberly Hart, audiologist at Hearing HealthCare Centers, which has offices in Loveland and Fort Col-
lins. Keeping our auditory senses in working order is a major component of quality of life. “When the auditory system does not work properly it affects our interpretation of everything and everyone around us,” says Hart. Not only can mishearing impact our emotional and social behavior, but hearing loss is also associated with a risk for falls. Three of the most common symptoms of hearing loss are difficulty hearing with background noise, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and the sense that people around you are mumbling and speaking too softly. “We often blame others or the environment rather than blaming our hearing,” says Hart. Hearing loss can occur
slowly and can be almost undetectable at first. It’s important to be extremely sensitive to these early warning signs so that the auditory pathway doesn’t have the chance to atrophy, or shrink up. “The longer we wait for treatment the harder it is to get function back and minimize the negative effects,” says Hart. “That’s why seeing an audiologist and being evaluated is so important.” The American SpeechHearing-Language Association recommends that everyone who is 50 years and older should have their hearing screened. This free test is available at Hearing HealthCare Centers.

Like our auditory senses, our vision deteriorates as we age and early intervention is key. “As we age, we are more prone to cataracts, macular degeneration, glaucoma and dry eyes,” says Dr. Dustin Asay,

These problems can manifest with symptoms such as a decrease in vision, a worse glare when driving at night, or the eyes feeling gritty and sandy. “A lot of these conditions you won’t know about until the disease process has started,” says Asay. “And if we don’t have a chance to see your eyes, the condition is going to get missed. That’s why seniors need an eye exam every year.” Healthy eating and a diet rich in leafy, green vegetables can also help preserve your sight and keep your eyes healthy, as well as wearing sunglasses and avoiding tobacco products. In Colorado, Asay also
recommends artificial tears four times a day because of the dry air. “Dry eyes are uncomfortable and cause blurry vision,” he says. Kirk Eye Center runs a specialty dry-eye clinic on Tuesdays. “When you keep your vision healthy, you can maintain being independent for longer,” says Asay.
Skin
The deterioration of our skin as we age is perhaps easier to notice than that of our eyes and ears. Our skin becomes drier and more thin with time and the Colorado environment, with its dryness and strong sunshine, only encourages this natural process. Dr. Holly McCoppin of Lake
Loveland Dermatology says that the symptoms to look out for as we age are indicators of sun damage and skin cancer. “As we age, the effects of the sun and aging lead to drier, more fragile, and thinner skin,” she says. “Caring for your skin well can help slow this process and prevent premature aging and skin cancers.” To protect your skin, avoid the outdoors during peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and wear sunscreen and protective clothing. “Sun and UV avoidance is the single most important thing we can do to prevent premature aging of our skin and the development of skin cancer,” McCoppin says. She also
advises against tobacco products. “Smoking greatly speeds up how quickly skin ages,” she says. “It causes wrinkles and a dull, sallow complexion.” A healthy diet and good hygiene habits— using moisturizer and a gentle cleanser—will also maintain skin health. “Our environment and lifestyle choices can cause our skin to age prematurely,” McCoppin says. “By taking some preventive actions, we can slow the changes in our skin associated with aging.” Hearing HealthCare Centers, Kirk Eye Center, and Lake Loveland Dermatology will all have booths at the Senior Expo. The cannabis plant produces cannabinoids — CBD and THC are the two we hear about most. But cannabis plants produce many more cannabinoids, mostly in small amounts, according to scientists. “With cancer and chemo patients, we have customers that use both THC and CBD products together,” Cox said. “When their cancer doctor wants them to get the products and information from us, we explain, if the doctor
says use THC, but they don’t want the high feeling, they can use THC first, wait 15 minutes and then take CBD to diminish the high,” Cox said, though he does not give medical advice to customers. CBD is also known for its
anti-inflammatory properties, pain reduction, and to decrease anxiety and depressive symptoms. Not to mention, the treatment efficacy for seizures associated with pediatric epilepsy. Retail remedies start with quality products Depending on your ailment du jour, consumers buy CBD products in a variety of forms, says Eric Sweatt, owner of The CBD Store, located in Loveland. “CBD products are for both people and pets. It comes in salves, for skin, tinctures for under the tongue, capsules, transdermal patches, and flower.” It’s not uncommon for his customers to first buy CBD products for their pets, notice some health improvement and then start taking it them-
selves, he said. “It helps with anxiety, cancer, arthritis, and chronic pain,” Sweatt said. “We can stop seizures in animals and people by using CBDs.” Sweatt works with over 20 physicians in the United States—and together they help people relieve physical and mental pain. Some folks have swapped their opiates for CBD to help with their opiate addictions, he added. said. Also ask retailers how the CBD product is being extracted or manufactured, said Cox. While there are several methods, some are better than others, he said, but if they cannot explain the process, it could be a red flag.
CBD – on the inside
The human body has a biologic system called the endocannabinoid system—it’s thought to regulate homeostasis, according to UCLA Health scientists. The body produce its own “cannabislike molecules,” according to scientists. Endocannabinoid receptors in the body detect when plant-based cannabinoids our system. These receptors are found in the skin, immune cells, bones and other major organs. [Source:
To ensure your body can readily absorb CBD oil and put its medicinal properties to work, read the label before buying it. Carrier oils in the product make a difference in how the body uses it, said Garrett. “A lot of CBD products use MCT oil and we have found olive oil and avocado oil tends to have better absorption in the body,” she said. Unlike THC, the CBD market has not been regulated by the government. That means labeling laws have loose guidelines. Not all bottles even show you correct dosage information per drop. “Milligrams on the bottle are important because you have to get a certain dosage in order to get the desired effect,” Garrett said. Opt for products with clear labeling and dosage instructions, says Cox. The FDA recently held a hearing on May 31 about CBD and cannabis regulations. Future regulations are anticipated to dramatically affect the cannabis industry.
Beware Risk Factors
To decipher known interactions from CBD and synthetic pharmaceuticals is a sticky subject because so few studies exist. And it puts physicians who rely on evidence based research in a hard spot when treating patients. In a 2018 Epilepsy Behav Case Rep, it suggests that people using the well-known blood thinner, Warfarin, combined with CBD need “continual monitoring” because of possible bleeding risk. Though, another study in the journal of pharmacology suggests that menthol cough drops might interfere with Warfarin too. When asked if people are reporting CBD interactions with other medications, Sweatt said it’s important to work closely with your doc. “Try CBD, dose low and go slow. With your doctor’s help, you will probably replace that medication because you don’t need to double dose with two medications,” Sweatt said.
