elcome back Boulder! BIFF 2020 was the last major live event in 2020 in our town and BIFF 2021 will be one of the first to return. The past 14 months have been long, lonely, and tragic, and we’re excited for the opportunity to reunite with friends, family and our community. And, because we are one of the first live film festivals in the world in 2021, BIFF has enjoyed programming a bounty of extraordinary, new, inspiring films, and we are extremely proud to present the best of them to Boulder’s famously enthusiastic film audiences.

where we will honor him with our first-ever Career Achievement Award in Documentary Filmmaking, and screen his brand-new film Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain.

Right from opening night, we will be rocking the Chautauqua Auditorium, starting with Questlove’s Summer of Soul (…Or, When The Revolution Could Not be Televised), winner of both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at Sundance 2021, with newly found footage of the huge 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. This amazing film features Sly and the Family Stone, The 5th Dimension, B.B. King, Gladys Knight & the Pips, a young Stevie Wonder, The Staples Singers, and many, many others…along with their amazing stories.

Boulder suffered a terrible loss after the tragedy at a supermarket in South Boulder. In honor of those lost, we will be presenting a free outdoor screening of the film Us Kids, a rousing coming-of-age story about a generation of youth leaders determined to fight for justice in response to the plague of gun violence at this critical time in our nation’s history. The evening will feature a panel before the film, including filmmaker Kim Snyder, Parkland survivor and activist Samantha Fuentes, and Congressman Joe Neguse, among others. The screening is June 26 at the Boulder High Soccer Field. See page 33 for registration information.

CineCHEF 2021, our incredibly tasty foodie event with beloved local chefs, will be held at the Rayback Collective, Thursday, June 24. This BIFF fundraiser will feature a glorious offering from some of the greatest chefs in Boulder and Denver, along with Francis Ford Coppola wine, Upslope beer, and Snowmelt hard seltzer.

Between screenings of some of the greatest independent films of the year, you can amble through our free Community Fair Saturday on the Chautauqua Green from noon to 6pm, and enjoy live music, talk to your favorite local organizations about their upcoming programs, or maybe just hug a lot of old friends. (Yes, there will be food, beer and wine available to purchase.) We will also feature an Outdoor Cinema on Boulder High’s soccer field, and you can BIFF at Home with our Virtual Screening Room.

Don’t BIFF and drive! Do hike and bike! There will be no available parking at Chautauqua. We will have satellite parking lots and shuttle service to bring you to the Auditorium.  Inspired by people like Muhammed Ali, Joan Baez, Daniel Ellsberg and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., 500,000 American men resisted their own draft at the risk of prison and brought the entire Federal Court system to a halt. They marched with millions of others and not only helped to end the savage Vietnam War (which killed 50,000 American soldiers), but also helped end the draft itself. These young men were willing to serve long prison sentences on the basis of their belief that the war was immoral and human life is sacred.  Godspeed, Los Polacos! tells the story of five university students during the Cold War who were bored with kayaking the Class 3 rapids of Poland. They skillfully pull the strings of the Soviet system to kayak and raft the Amazon and find themselves on an expedition in the Americas with a six-wheeled military truck, homemade equipment and little to no whitewater skills. The story follows their epic two-year journey that culminates in the record-breaking first descent of the world’s deepest canyon, and finds the adventurers in Soviet crosshairs after they leverage their newfound fame to fight for democracy in the Eastern Bloc. They arrived full of naïve optimism, but dirt-poor and with rafts and three ratty homemade kayaks. The rest is neck-snapping, wildly improbable history.

a young woman in Australia in the 1950s, Valerie Taylor bucked the status quo, becoming a champion spear fisherman in a sport dominated by men. She soon traded in her spear for a camera, documenting the undersea world as never before. With husband Ron behind the camera and Valerie’s willingness to get up close and personal with all manner of marine creatures, the team quickly gained attention as world-class, pioneering underwater filmmakers. The first to film a great white underwater, their shark sequences ultimately became the inspiration for a new novel and soon-to-be blockbuster—Jaws—with Valerie and Ron brought on to shoot all the underwater live shark scenes. The rest is history, as the movie solidified sharks as monsters to be feared and hunted. Valerie would spend the rest of her life working to set the record straight.

They include a skating guitarist, a tagger, two wannabe rappers, an exasperated fast-food worker and a limo driver, all who weave in and out of scenes, and through poetry express life, love, heartache, family, home and fear.  Snowcat mechanic Mike Alves was outside his maintenance garage when he heard the sound of twigs snapping. Snow avalanches do not roar and the twigs snapping were actually 100-foot trees. It was 1982 and this was the worst blizzard in Lake Tahoe’s history; it had already snowed seven feet in five days with wind gusts of 120 miles per hour. In a split second, millions of pounds of snow hurtled down the side of the mountain, demolishing Alpine Meadows’ base area buildings and burying the parking lot. A crew of 150 volunteers spent the next five days digging with hand shovels during the continuing blizzard. They found eight bodies, but continued frantically searching, because there was still one person missing—and all avalanche rescuers believe in miracles.

 The world’s first improv troupe, The Compass Players, was organized in Chicago in the 1950s and grew to include Mike Nichols, Elaine May, Shelly Berman, Del Close and others. When Nichols, May and Berman left for fame and fortune, the group renamed themselves The Second City, and the eventual director, Del Close—between nervous breakdowns—taught his rat-a-tat, free-association method of improv to young comedians like Robin Williams, Dan Ackroyd, John Belushi, John Candy, Stephen Colbert, Andy Dick, Chris Farley, Tina Fey, Shelley Long, Bill Murray, Mike Myers, Gilda Radner, Amy Poehler, Harold Ramis and dozens more. Featuring never-before-seen footage of some of the greatest jazz stars of all time.

 In 1959, tenor-saxophonist Ronnie Scott started a jazz club in London that was a huge success from the very beginning to today. The club has been the ground-zero of jazz in Europe for six decades, and has featured legends like Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, Chet Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, Roland Kirk, Van Morrison, Buddy Rich and Nina Simone, and included superstars like Prince, Lady Gaga and Jimi Hendrix, who made his last spectacular performance at Ronnie’s before his death. Ronnie himself died in 1996, remembered for the money he handed out to down-on-their-luck musicians, many of whom made their comebacks right there at Ronnie’s.  Godspeed, Los Polacos! tells the story of five university students who were bored with kayaking the Class 3 rapids of Poland. They skillfully pull the strings of the Soviet system to kayak and raft the Amazon and find themselves on an expedition in the Americas with a six-wheeled military truck, homemade equipment and little to no whitewater skills. The story follows their epic twoyear journey that culminates in the record-breaking first descent of the world’s deepest canyon, and finds the adventurers in Soviet crosshairs after they leverage their newfound fame to fight for democracy in the Eastern Bloc. They arrived full of naïve optimism, but dirt-poor, with only their rafts and three ratty homemade kayaks. The rest is neck-snapping, wildly improbable history.
